Can I Archive and Install From Leopard Up-To-Date Disc?

I'm a Mac newbie, so I apologize if this is an obvious question.
I purchased my iMac this month, so I received a Leopard Up-To-Date disc for $10. The CD says Upgrade on it, and I can't find any options for what type of install I want to run. I've seen things like Erase And Install, Archive and Install, and Upgrade posted here on the forums, but the only options I have are whether or not to install things like Core Services, X11, etc. Can I not perform an Archive and Install with this disc, and if I can't, is there any chance I could request a full CD from Apple?

You should be able to -- when you get to the screen that asks you to choose your installation destination, highlight the drive, then you will see in the lower-left an options buttion. CLick it and you will find three choices: upgrade, archive/install and upgrade install. Choose the one you want and enjoy!
Keep in mind that when you put the disk in, the system will verify that the DVD is OK -- it takes a few minutes, but it is worth knowing that the disk is not corrupt before you start. Also, repairing permissions seems to take awhile -- just let it happen.

Computer locks up, so I want to reinstall the OS. I had upgraded to Snow Leopard.
Tried to do an archive and install from the DVD that came with the computer, but that failed.
Tried to do an erase and install, but the install stops somewhere near the end, 13 minutes to go. Tried several times, same result.
Can't reboot from the install disk, it just ejects the disk and I get the flashing question mark.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I think my hard drive is toast. When I boot in single user mode, I get the following text:

Can you do an archive and install from a download update?

I upgraded to Tiger and 10.4.4 came on the disc I bought. I'm running into some problems w/ utilities that I have and would like to do an archive and install from the 10.4.10 download. The only option is an easy install though.

You cannot Archive & Install from a downloaded update. You need to do an Archive & Install from your 10.4.4 DVD, then download and run the 10.4.10 Combo Updater.

It's automatic since Snow Leopard. The installer determines whether it's making a clean install or replacing an existing one. In the latter case it behaves similarly to the old Archive and Install:
Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. But "since one week" sounds like a direct translation of French "il y a". You should call your local country's Apple suuport and ask.

Can't "archive and install" or reinstall Snow Leopard and other problems

My laptop has been doing some funny things lately. I began noticing it mostly with video content. Especially when playing a DVD. The audio comes across as choppy. The video gets choppy. Now I have noticed that the mouse (track pad) seems jumpy. The arrow jumps across the screen when not intended to etc.
So, I thought I would do what was once called an Archive and install. I realize that Snow Leopard doesn't give that option, but it essentially does that if you choose to reinstall the OS.
This laptop is Model MacBook 2,1. It shipped with Leopard. I bout the SL upgrade and am trying to use that disc to reinstall the OS.
I get this message with a yellow triangle and exclamation point after I insert the disc and click the "install" button:
Mac OS X 10.6 cannot be installed on this computer. This disc requires that Mac OSX 10.5 or later already be installed on your computer."
I am confused because I am running 10.6.2
Any help??

You get the message if you use the special, reduced price Leopard to Snow Leopard upgrade disc. The retail Snow Leopard disc doesn't require any OS to be preinstalled; the upgrade one requires that Leopard be installed for licensing reasons.

Aftewr Archive and Install of Leopard - how to recover files?

After a long and frustrating day installing Leopard on my MacBook Pro (five months old), I finally have it up and running but don't know how I should recover settings and documents from my archived files. As per Apple's advice, I did the archive and install without preserving settings.
Actually, documents are fairly straightforeward, but what about Entourage data (emails, addresses, etc.)?
Also, will applications like Photoshop, Lightroom, etc. need to be reinstalled?
Please advise.

Having left my French in high school, I googled, and then read your description. That is the "Keychains" folder. Keychain Access is the program that manages the keychains, which store all of your passwords.
There are a few places on the Mac you can look for translations. Each app will have embedded in it folders for each localization it supports. The .strings files usually hold the translations. To see inside an app, ctrl-click on the app and choose "Show Package Contents." You'll get a folder Called "Contents." Dig down into that folder and there will be a "Resources" folder. In there, will be the translation folders named with the language.lproj. You can poke around in these folders, but don't change anything or you might break stuff. I used QuickLook (select file and hit spacebar) to view the files, but any text editor will work--just ctrl-click on it and choose "Open with..."
The Finder and the Core Services of the OS are in the /System/Library/ folder. The CoreServices folder has just that, including the Finder and Dock, which are the apps that drive most of what you see. Both of those are just apps, so you can view their contents and see what localizations they have. I searched through them for "Trousseau de clefs" but could not find it. In the /System/Library folder are two other promising folders, "Resources" and "SystemFolderLocalizations." Both have .lproj folders with some translations.
Besides just googling for French localizations on Mac OS X, try reading about Localizations at the Apple Developer Connection.
As where I've learned all of this: Mostly here on these discussions and MacOSXHints and MacFixIt and The X Lab. I've also found info on personal blogs by googling for an issue along with "Mac OS X" or "Tiger" or "Leopard."

Can't erase and install SNow Leopard on old MacBook Pro

I am trying to erase and install Snow Leopard on a MacBook Pro3,1. I boot up with the installation disc, get to pick a language but then a window pops up that says "Mac OS X can't be installed on this computer" and gives me the options to Restore from Backup or Restart.
I had upgraded to a 500GB hard drive on this machine which I used for months, but it is currently running off the hard drive of a new MacBook Pro that got fried. The installation disk I am using is the one I got with that unfortunate machine. Could this be the problem?
Any other suggestions?
Other info: Mac OS X 10.6.1 (108504)
Other History: The machine I am trying to erase and install on recently had its logic board replaced under warranty because of the NVIDIA graphics card issue. I have not found the service centre in South Africa to be very trustworthy, in fact the first time they claimed to have replaced the logic board, the computer (which had been intermittently failing to boot up) immediately started displaying the same problems. Another mac shop said to me that the "new" logic board looked so dusty that it seemed extremely unlikely that it had been replaced a week prior. Anyway, it has ostensibly been replaced again, along with a faulty superdrive.
When it went back to the service centre, they put in the hard drive of another, new, MacBook Pro of mine that got fried in an unrelated incident
Please help! I want to give this machine to an employee but
a) want to make sure it's stable and functioning properly, and
b) want to give it a clean slate with my personal data and settings erased.

Once you install it onto the old machine, you can use the setup assistant to migrate your stuff and apps from the other machine.

Archive and Install from external DVDROM?

My Dvd-rom is broken so I bought an external optical drive. Lately, my software (such as Word and Powerpoint), have not been opening correctly. Apple Support suggested that I do an Archive and Install.
Will I be able to do this from an external optical drive?

Yes, as long as the external drive is bootable. Insert the installer DVD into the external drive then restart the computer. After the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the icon for the external DVD then click on the downward pointing arrow button. The computer should boot from the DVD. Follow these instructions for the Archive and Install:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

Not exactly. If you want a fresh version of OSX, you can just install one. It will take a while on Lion, since it must be downloaded, but won't disturb anything else. See Using the Recovery HD.

Can not Archive and Install

Older white imac with 10.4.11, PPC 2.1 white. Made a copy of the 10.4 install disc and i am somewhat glad i did now. The original disc has been broken and now i need to archive and install. The problem is when booting from the copied disc, i get a circle with a diagonal line through it. Same thing happens when i boot to the desktop and click install mac osx. I should be able to use the copied disc right? There are 0 scratches/marks on the disc for what it is worth.

About the only thing you can do is call Apple with the Serial# of that iMac Handy & see if thaey have original replacement Discs available.

Boot problems - can I "Archive and Install" to back-up and then reformat?

I'm having booting problems with my PowerBook 15".
I've ran the hardware/disk utility tests and everything seems fine. The problem is, I get a blue-screen with the spinning sun-dial or sthing. It keeps spinning and spinning! I tried going into safe-mode, but it doesn't work!
My question is, can I do an "Archive and Install"... load a fresh copy of OS X on my PowerBook so that I can back-up my data? Would this work?

I took the risk and managed to install Tiger over my previous OS successfully! Afterwards, I backed up everything as fast as I could, and then did a Clean Install. Worked like a charm! haha..
However... after doing the Clean Install, I realised that I am UNABLE to install "Windows Media Player for Mac OX X" on to my machine!?!?! I downloaded "WindowsMediaInstaller.bin", and opened it with StuffIt Expander. StuffIt Expander just hung at the "Preparing" mode and says "Preparing..."
Anyone else has/had the same problem? Please help, as a number of online radio sites require Windows Media Player to run, and now I can't access them!! =(

Can I do an archive and install of Leopard on Leopard?

When I first upgraded, I chose the simple upgrade option. But now I'm having performance issues, and I'm wondering if it would help to do a cleaner install. In the alternative, I need to learn how to back up my applications and documents and perform a clean install from scratch.
I'm a bit frustrated. I switched in March from Windows to Apple because I no longer wanted to be locked in mortal combat with my computer. Before I did the upgrade, I was very happy with my iMac, and I want to be happy again. I'm thinking that maybe I didn't do a good install, and that a "do over" would help.

Once, you sort out your problems, Get a bootable, external HD, and make a bootable backup/clone before upgrading/updating and ensure that works like the original. That allows you to revert to the previous good state without having to reinstall anything. Then, peruse these

Apple says I can just Archive and Install Tiger on top of Leopard

Will that cause any issues on my Macbook Pro. I dont wanna hurt my new system and I wanna utilize dual core as much as possible.
Reason I wanna downgrade is - a couple of my music programs work better on Tiger and I dont like the new iCal & Finder Player

I wanted to do the same thing, revert back to Tiger (on a bought Tiger disk) on my Macbook, which I now have Leopard installed on, and had the same message "Mac OS X 10.4 cannot be installed on this machine", yet it came with Tiger installed in the first place so should run Tiger? Have you found out anything new since your last post?
