Can I back up ipod touch directly to external hard drive - bypass using computer?

I am trying to figure out if it is possible to back up my ipod touch to an external hard drive directly. I know it is possible connecting the external to the computer and doing the simple drag and drop but would rather just by pass connecting to the computer and use the ipod directly. If it is possible, any suggestions?

Hi,
While Jolly Giant's advice is sound, it only applies if your music is in your iTunes library on your iBook, from what I can understand from your post this is not your situation.
To retrieve your music from your touch I would suggest you read the (famous) post by "Zevoneer" (Thank you Zevoneer.)

He explains how to get your music off without risking losing it, you will need to use your laptop or another computer but I should think the music could be saved directly through to your ext. HD, read carefully, when you have finished make sure you back up elsewhere properly.

I work for a while in the US and soon go back to France. But before leaving, I would like to buy an iPod Touch as it is clearly more expensive in Europe.
Question : how can I change the interface to french, including the virtual keyboard (from QWERTY to AZERTY)?
What about warranty ? Does it work in Europe ?
Last question, is it possible now with the last firmware update to use the iPod Touch as an external hard drive ?

My hard drive on my computer crashed! This is the computer my ipad was sync with! All my photos of my three girls are on the ipad, but how do I get them transferred to either an external hard drive or to another computer - or just have them all printed - nearly 1000 photos!
Also, can I back up my ipad with an external hard drive? If I try to sync to a new computer it will erase everything I currently have on the ipad , correct?

Right. You didn't read the post, you only read the title.
The title came from an earlier step in the process when I was posing a question to the systen.
The pertinent part of the question is "How to I back up documents that are stored in iCloud"
That the destination for the backup is NOT my internal HDD should be clear from the rest of the post.
And frankly, even if that is where I want to back up to, that would at least give me two copies, at least giving me one duplicate of the stuff on iCloud.
So please stop wasting my time if you can't answer the actual question: How do I backup content that is stored in iCloud. The destination of the backup is irrelevant.

If the external drive is large enough, yes.
Recent versions of Time Machine will do this across a properly set up and Shared network connection or to a drive on a Server. But you may be unhappy with the amount of Wireless traffic generated to perform the backups, especially the initial full backup.
Utilities like Carbon Copy Cloner will do this ONLY when performing a file-by-file backup. A "Disk Image" backup reproduces the Source disk, including blank space, and fills the entire Destination drive with the Source Disk image.

Thank you for great advice re SuperDuper.
You wasnt to know we didnt live in USA. We will try to get the full retail version of Leopard off the net. We will also phone round the apple resellers.
In the meantime, we are happy running Tiger with the knowledge that SuperDuper has cloned our hard drive in case of a disaster.
SuperDuper recommended backing up the hard drive with a new user account if we were using filevault on the master account. We backed up our hard drive without creating a new user with filevault as we could not read the pdf `Instuctions as preview was not responding.
Is this copy safe to use as a bootable drive or should we copy our entire HD again using a new user account without filevault?

For TM yes, for another backup program running on the mac yes. You can avoid the NTFS issue by installing a NTFS driver in your mac: there are two proven ones: Paragon and NTFS-3G. These drivers make it possible for a mac to read and write NTFS formatted drives.
But it will not help TM (I am not 100% sure about that), but other backup apps it will help.

Can't back up my iPhoto 08 my external hard drive

I have iPhoto 08 and have a USB 2 external hard drive connected to the new Airport Extreme Base Station. When I open up my photos folder and attempt to drag the iPhoto icon to my external drive on my MacBook Pro I get an error message stating that one of the photos file names is too long and can't be copied. Then my iPhoto does not back up after I hit the "okay" in the error message box (there are only two options, "cancel" and "okay".
What is the deal and is there a workaround?

Once you've confirmed that the EHD is formatted correctly and all is well (run Disk Utility and repair the disk) try the following to create an almost "duplicate" library on the EHD:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 - select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next window name the new library and select the EHD as the location where you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2: Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

Backed Up from macbook pro to external hard drive for use on PC--how to restore to macbook pro?

My college student daughter uses her macbook pro, 13" Mid-2010, for ALL her school work. A few days ago it stopped working for her. Blank screen. Turned it off and on, blank screen with the gear spinning. She took it to a place named MacExperience in Indy for diagnositcs. The tech got it working and said it was OK now ($90 later). Two hours later, same thing occurred. She returned to the tech and he indicated it is in fact the logistics board that needs repair/replacement.
She purchased an external hard drive (G-Drive 500 GB mini FW800/USB 2/FW400 7200 RPM)--that is the description from the receipt she scanned and sent to me. The tech backed up her files from the MBP to the External HD so that the files are usable on a PC until the MBP is repaired.
Will her files be intact on the MBP once it is repaired? More importantly, since the back-up was made from the MBP to use on a PC, how do we restore the files from the external HD back to the MBP so that she can use MBP with all her files, school work, etc.?
The tech said he will do it, but of course for another $90. My point is, she needs to know how to do this in the event something like this occurs again (I sure hope not!!). Furthermore, she will from now on back-up her files to the external HD, which she needs to learn to do, as well.

I may be wrong, but I believe the format has something to do with it - note the sizes here (from the Help in Disk Utility on how to format a drive for Windows):

My iPod is only shown in my computer, no where else. It dosen't come up in itune and when i try to use the iPod uodater to restore it, an error comes up or it freezes. When i try to open it in my computer, it tells me it is and external hard drive but needs formatting.
Whats going on and how can i fix it

Had the same problem with my new 60G ipod. Even had i replaced with apple.
- The solution was to buy an external USB2 hub at the cost of 20 USD.
Now it works without any problems. The USB2 hub needs to have an external powersupply and it can ge bought for around the magic 20 USD. The hub has 4 ports and can thus be used to connect other USB devices.
I´ll bet it will solve your problem - again it was the exactly same for me. BEst Regards,

I have a large number of photos that I need to move onto an external hard drive to free up my MBP's internal hard drive. Most of my photos were imported in RAW format and editied in iPhoto. I understand from other posts that iPhoto converts these photos to jpegs. I'm quickly running out of room.

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

It is usually recommended that your keep a clone of your HD and your Time Machine backup on different drives.
You don't want your backup drive to fail and lose both your clone and your TM backup.
The answer to your question is to use Disk Utility to partition your drive. Again, you should have a backup of your drive before you partition it.
Launch Disk Utility, select your external drive > Partition > Resize the partition by sliding the tab at the lower right corner of the image > Create a new partition with the space that has been freed up.
