Can I Back Up Multiple Macs to TC?

I'm setting up our new 1TB Time Capsule on my works network to back up two G5's over ethernet and one Powerbook. Is this possible without partitioning the hard drive? If I do need to re-partition the drive then the only way I have found online is to remove the drive from the TC, put it in an external case and connect and partition through USB. Is there any other way?

Thanks for the quick reply, I'll start my first back up now knowing that I shouldn't have a problem. Cheers.

Yes, you simply share the drive to the network.. in whatever way that is possible as you have given us no info.. over the network TM will create sparsebundles.. locally it can produce a straight backup ..

You could partition the drive into 2 partitions.  One formatted as HFS+ for Mac OS X back, and one formatted as NTFS for Windows backup.
You would have to move the drive from system to system to do your backups.  If there are 2 systems, I would suggest just getting separate drives for each, unless they are both laptops, then you will be disconnecting the drives all the time anyway.
Unless Windows is running in a virtual machine on your Mac.  Then a partitioned drive would be fine.

You are telling us you read and tried the normal methods?
Boot Camp or Taskbar. Option on restart. "x" on startup. And none of those work.

can i back up 2 macs on one external hard drive?

If the external drive is large enough, yes.
Recent versions of Time Machine will do this across a properly set up and Shared network connection or to a drive on a Server. But you may be unhappy with the amount of Wireless traffic generated to perform the backups, especially the initial full backup.
Utilities like Carbon Copy Cloner will do this ONLY when performing a file-by-file backup. A "Disk Image" backup reproduces the Source disk, including blank space, and fills the entire Destination drive with the Source Disk image.

  • HT201250 Can I back up multiple volumes using Time Machine on Snow Leopard?

I have a fault with my time machine software where it is no longer able to perform incremental back ups of the volumes (partitions) I have created on my internal hard drive - every attempt results in a full back up. However incremental back up of the Mac HD is working. I have had it working perfectly in the past. I'm backing up to a dedicated external hard drive.
I have just been told by an apple support manager that Time machine on OS 10.6.8 is not designed to back up multiple volumes (partitions) on my internal hard drive, only the current Mac HD drive - is this correct? He said it shouldn't be backing up the other volumes and the reason it is doing so and has done so in the past is because of bug!
Surely this is not the case?

I would read and try this.  Pondini is very knowledgeable about Time Machine:

  • Can i back up my mac and windows operating system on the one hard drive?

Hello everyone, i use a 4TB external hard drive to back up my imac. I recently installed Parallels and Windows 8.1 so I can run a PMS for my business. Now that i have installed Parallels and windows 8.1 on the mac can i format the drive so it will back up the mac and the windows operating system? Thanks!

If you want to back up with Time Machine, you need a GUID partition table and an HFS (Mac OS X) partition. If you can also create a Windows partition without destroying the partition table, then you can use the same drive for both systems. I can't give you specific instructions for Windows.

  • How can I troubleshoot a Lion MacBook in Japan that I can't "Back to My Mac" to?

Our family lives in the United States. My wife's parents live in Japan. We gave them a MacBook and have been remoting connecting to it via screen sharing. At first, I was just connecting to it directly via its IP. I was using the deafult host feature on an AirPort Extreme Base Station for this, but the base station would occasionaly crash and would have to be power cycled to get it working again. So last year, I decided to connect to it via "Back to My Mac" so I could just use DHCP and didn't have to use the default host feature. This worked well for a while, but over the past couple of months the performance has been poor and now I can't connect at all -- even though the machine appears in the sidebars of my other Macs.
FWIW, I'm using Mountain Lion on all my other Macs and their MacBook is running Lion. I've noticed that Back to My Mac creates a VPN connection to your other Macs and I assume that this is what was causing the performance problems I noticed a couple of months ago.
Also, my wife's parents are elderly and not computer savy at all so it's hard to get them to do things over the phone. If anyone has any insights on troubleshooting "Back to My Mac" screen sharing issues, please let me know. Ports to ping, diagnotics to run, etc.
    Thanks fo the help!

    Hi Mike,
No sign of your photoshopped image, so I'm guessing about what you want here.
Does this resemble what you're looking for?
Column B contains the initial entries (made from the keyboard). I wasn't expecting to see the trailing zeroes retained in these.
All cells in columns C and D contain the formula shown above the table, =B, a simple cell reference to the column B cell on the same row as the formula.
Column C's format is left as the default "Automatic". As can be seen, all trailing zeroes are removed.
Cells in column D have had their format set as shown in the Inspector pane to the right of the table.
The value in these cells is still the same as the value in column B, and that is the value that would be used in any calculations referencing these cells. Formatting affects only the display of the cell contents. What is displayed is the value in the cell, rounded to two decimal places.
    Regards,
    Barry

  • Backing up multiple Mac's / OS's to one drive.

    Current network connected via 802.11G
~Intel Mac Book Pro running 10.4.1
    ~iBook G4 running 10.4.1
    ~New MacBook running Snow Leopard
~New Mac Mini running Snow Leopard
Can I back up all these machines to a 1TB firewire 800 drive attached to the Mac Mini using Time Machine?
How should I partition the drive?
What format should I partition the drive in?
Will the “GUID Partition Scheme” cover all 10.X.X operating systems?
Does each computer backup require its own partition?
How do I back up the 10.4.1 machines? I’m presuming I can’t use Time Machine.
Is there third party software that would work better in this environment?
Will the Colts cover the 5 points in the Super Bowl?
Thank you Mac Gods…I appreciate your knowledge transfer!

Not the iBook because it cannot run Time Machine, but yes for the others. You have some things to consider in implementing your plan.
    1. Should you create separate partitions for each machine's backup? I would suggest that you do, but the only mandatory partitions would be for your iBook's and MBP's backup because you cannot use TM on either.
    2. Size considerations. A TM backup drive should be at least twice the capacity of the drives it backs up. So, if your three Intel Macs each have 250 GB drives, for example, then your TM backup drive should be at least 1.5 GBs. The size of the partition used for the iBook should be equal to the size of the iBook's hard drive.
    3. What backup utility will you use for the iBook? I can suggest a few choices:
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Deja Vu
    Synk (Standard)
    SilverKeeper
They can all be found at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
All Intel models require the TM backup drive be partitioned using GUID. I would upgrade your MBP running Tiger to Leopard or Snow Leopard if possible. Otherwise you will need to use whatever third-party backup utility you choose.

  • HT3775 Can someone direct me as to how I check whether I have the media formats and codecs that QuickTime Player can play back using my Mac Pro?

Media formats supported by QuickTime Player
QuickTime Player natively supports the following media formats and codec components. You can also extend QuickTime to support additional codecs and components.
Below are the media formats and codecs that QuickTime Player can play back in Mac OS X v10.6.x or later:

More alternatives to Quicktime. VLC is recommended a lot.
    Video Player - Divx

    Video Player - VLC

  • Transferring Time Machine Back-ups - Multiple Macs

    Hi
I have read the support pages for transferring Time Machine Backups from one HDD to another.  I back up both an iMac and Mac Book to the same Air Port Time Capsule, using Time Machine on both Macs.  My question is, do I need to use my iMac to transfer my iMac backups and my Mac Book to transfer my Mac Book backups, from one Time Capsule to a replacement one or could I do both from one Mac?
    Thanks

You should be making multiple HD clones and making data archives
I assume you have your vital data saved in more than just time machine?

  • How can I connect to multiple Macs over the internet?

I have forwarded the ports on my Airport Extreme as follows:
10.0.1.3 being assigned to my Mac Mini.
I also have a MacBook Pro at home I would like access to which has the 10.0.1.4 reserved/assigned. I cannot connect to it because the port forwarding points to the Mac Mini, and it doesn't allow me to create another rule since those ports are already being used by that first entry. How do I go about having the option to connect to either one of the two computers at home when I'm at work using Apple Remote Desktop?

it's not really a confirmed limitation of ARD, ARD is not designed to work outside of a LAN
it's designed for system admins to manage macs remotely while on the same LAN
but you want to use it outside of your LAN, you can by using VPN
VPN gives you remote secure access to your LAN
you will appear to be connected to your LAN
so you can do most things as you would if you were actually on your LAN
ARD does not facilitate a VPN connection
you'd connect using a VPN connection to your LAN then start ARD, ARD will behave just as it would if you were on the LAN
VPN client is built into OSX, system preferences, network, add choose VPN connection
You'd need a VPN server such as OSX server on your LAN
and configure any firewalls, routers etc to allow incoming VPN to connect to your server
You'd also need either a fixed external IP address and external domain name or use dynamic DNS setup
    you could also try logmein

  • Can I print from multiple Macs?

I have a G4 Quicksilver, a B&W G3, & a clamshell iBook. I use an AirPort Extreme base station with the iBook. My 2 towers are connected to a bridge. (I have a broadband connection). Is there any way I can print to my HP920c from all 3 Macs using the base station (or any way)?
    Thanks!

Yes, you should be able to do that.
Depends on system software - need OS X (10.2.3 or higher) to print to AEX.
