Can I back up my entire computer to iCloud?

I'm going to be away for 2 or 3 months, and I don't want to take my hard drives along. Can I back up my entire computer to iCloud using Time Machine?

... and if you do opt for crashplan or a similar service, be aware that it will take one or more weeks to back up the entire mac.  These services only back up a little at a time.  They do have a service (CrashPlan does) where you can perform a backup to CD and mail those disks to them.
Since you are using Time Machine, you could use a second external drive to back up to (TM can back up to multiple locations).  I have an ext drive at work and at home and back up to each.  In your case, do a TM backup to the second drive and then place it in a different location, if security is your concern.
If, on the other hand your intent is to have your data available in the cloud for access from other computers, then CrashPlan is not your solution - it is only a backup service.  You could look into Google Drive or DropBox and then copy the critical files to either of these cloud services.  You can access the files from anywhere.  But I would not put the entire mac files there, it would be quite costly - assuming your mac uses up a lot of disk space.

  • Using Disk Utility to back up the entire computer

    Hello,
Could you explain to me how to back up my entire computer using the Disk Utility? Is cloning a better method and one I can update on a monthly basis?

I haven't used Super Duper but I think the basic features of the two utilities are very similar. If you want to clone your system and/or update a clone, it probably doesn't matter which you use. As long as you follow the instructions, prepare your drive etc., you should get a good result. Both let you back up selected items; run scripts and schedule back ups. I don't know how the details vary. Super Duper offers some sand boxing features which might be of interest - if you would use these, they'll appeal; otherwise, you may not see much advantage.
I really think you just have to look and see. Download both and take a look or visit the web pages of both and browse. Super Duper shows you all the options panels available if you register the product; CCC also has online documentation.
I don't know how similar the underlying mechanisms are. If you are concerned about extended attributes, you can test them using Backup Bouncer. The developer of CCC gives the output he got from testing version 3.1 (I think) on his site. Not sure if SD has this information somewhere.

  • HT201250 I use Time Machine to back up my entire computer with my external hard drive. I am getting a brand new iMac this month and was wondering what is the process of using this back up to restore my new computer exactly how my old computer was?

I use Time Machine to back up my entire computer with my external hard drive. I am getting a brand new iMac this month and was wondering what is the process of using this back up to restore my new computer exactly how my old computer was? I want to make sure I will still have various important files on my new computer, like my songs in iTunes, my photos in iPhoto, etc, etc. Thanks so much in advance!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
When you turn on the new iMac for the first time, Setup Assistant will ask you to restore a backup, so connect the external disk and follow steps to restore all your files to your new iMac. Your new Mac will have the same settings and programs as your old computer.
In other cases, I would recommend to restore the whole backup without using Migration Assistant or Setup Assistant, but a Late 2012 iMac uses a special OS X build, so the OS X version that you're using on your old Mac won't work on the new one. i havent backed it up on computer or icloud i synced it with my macbook and accidently deleted them all off my macbook and now its gone of my phone!! help me

You'll have to restore them from the most recent backup you made before you deleted them.
When computers and iOS devices are "synced" together, whatever you do on one device is synced to the others. You deleting them off your Dads phone made the same occur on your phone. That's how it is supposed to work.

  • Switch back and forth from computer to icloud

Hi everyone, just got myself a 4gb iphone 4s, My question is
In itunes i have selected to back up some photos and music imported from discs to my computer
but im thinking of using some of my free 5gb icloud allowance to back up some apps and purchased movies to icloud,
so if i downloaded some apps and purchased movies to my phone will it let me store these seperately on icloud without
transferring what i already have backed up on my computer, or if i select back up to icloud after downloading the apps and movies
will it transfer everything to icloud including what is presently backed up to my computer, can i move back and forth like this
choosing to back up some but not all content to icloud, Thanks in advance for any help given cheers willdoc.

HI, I don't think you can backup movies or indeed your personal media in general into iCloud. My understanding is that the iCloud backup of a device will backup application data & settings that would previously have been backed up on a computer. As Winston says you don't have any freedom to move individual files into and out of your iCloud storage.
Your apps and store purchases other than movies can be downloaded at any time, your non-iTunes-purchased media and any movies need to be backed up locally. Rather than looking at iCloud as a complete backup solution it may be better to treat it as a partial solution which gives you the freedom to access your purchase history (excluding movies) on demand and, if you care to subscribe to iTunes Match, extends that freedom to your non-iTunes-purchased music.
If your real need is for a backup solution then I'd recommend you look at Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner.
Ah, you fooled me by posting in the iCloud on my Mac forum but I gather from your other posts that you are a Windows user. See this User Tip for a backup strategy...

  • How can I back up my exchange contacts to icloud

    Good day
Our company has just lost our ms exchange server information. I am tasked to restore what I can but the situation looks dire. My fear is that when the clients with iphones (all the managers and myself) sync with their mailboxes with an empty contacts list, there phones will update to that contact list and they will lose all contacts on their phone that they have.
Can I somehow back up their exchange contacts to ICloud? My phone doen't let me.
My idea is: re-create their mail boxes, retrieve the contacts from the cloud, and in doing so, restore their contacts to their exchange account when it sync.
    Hope you can help
    Jacques

Open Contacts on your phone and tap Groups.  Then check to see what group the contacts belong to.  If they don't belong to an iCloud group, they won't sync with iCloud.

Since it is off-line, there is nothing you can do to find it except to use the old fashioned way, like if you lost a wallet or purse.
There maybe an app to take a photos I know there are ones that will periodically send an email with location. However, you have to have the iPod to set it up/install it.
However, since the iPod relies upon wifi they frequently can't connect to the internet

  • Can I back up my windows PC to iCloud?

Hi there. My husband is new to Apple and has just got his first iphone 4s. He currently uses a PC (yes I know I can't work wonders converting him over totally to Apple but he's getting there)! Anyway he was wondering if he can use icloud to back up his PC? by that I don't just mean his photos etc from his iphone, I mean the actual back up files created by his PC?
    Thank you for any advice.

iCloud is not a backup system for Macs or PC's. Backup your music some other way (iTunes Match?)

  • Can I back up my MacBook Pro to iCloud?

My iPhone & iPad back up to iCloud, but not my MacBook Pro laptop.  Can I do that?

In the past, when I made a calendar appt. on my iPhone, it showed up on my Mac AND vice versa.  Now it shows on my iPhone but does not make it to my calendar on my Mac or the other way around.  I'm not sure what I've done to "turn" that off.  Any thoughts?
