Can i back up two seperate devices to itunes? and then restore both to the correct new phones?

Looking to back up two iphone 4s, then restore both tomorrow to the two new iphone 5s, can i do two devices as how will itunes know to differentiate between the two?

First off, they all need to be registered to the same AppleID. Same one you should log into when you start up iTunes.  When you back up in there, preferably storing locally on the computer and not the iCloud, each device creates its own backup file (only one, by default, but that can be changed). Look in iTunes / Preferences / Devices (hover the cursor over each entry for more info).
So yes, you can back up more than one device onto an iTunes setup. When you plug the brand new iPhone for the first time, iTunes will recognize the fact and offer to Restore from a backup, giving you a list to pick from. Which leads us to an issue: you can only restore from a single backup, iTunes has no means of merging two backups into one.
Even if you manually force a Restore, the phone will be wiped before the backup is applied. Hence, no merging occurs.
Edit:  If you want to keep more than a single backup of a phone in iTune's backup library, right-click (or control-click) on any backup in Preferences / Devices. Choose Archive from the popup menu and name the result appropriately. Next time you back up that device, a new file will be created, with the default name.

I need help so if someone knows how to fix this I would be excited

On your phone: Settings>General>Reset>Erase all Content & Settings, or Plug it in, iTunes running, and hit the "Restore" button on the Summary Pane...eject when finished. Either choice will return the phone to a state just like it was when first taken out of the box.

  • If I back up my iPod Touch using iCloud and then restore it, will I be able to get back all my photos, app data, etc?

About 5 months ago I was clearing up space on my PC. I had moved music that was in my music folder onto a USB and I thought that I could do the same with my iTunes Library folder onto my USB. But it wouldn't fit, so I moved it back. But when I went to back up my iPod it didn't recognize it anymore. I haven't been able to restore it anymore. Just until now I'm trying to see if I could back-up my data & photos to iClod and then Restore it, but I'm just a little unsure. Can anybody just reasure me that this will OR will not work.

I don't really think that you need to restore your device in order to sync it again with iTunes. I suspect all that you need to do is connect the device to iTunes and then accept it as a new device and choose the option to start syncing with that library.
Of course, it would be a good idea to back up to iCloud before you did this.

If no change after restoring the iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from the backup, there is a hardware problem.

  • I have 2 iPhones among my devices in iTunes. I need to deauthorize the correct one. Help!

My old standby Mac for sync-ing my iTunes library and my iPhone 4 was my G4 Mirror Doors PowerMac. The startup hard disk on that Mac crapped out last month, and my other option for keeping my iTunes & iPhone ecosystem up-to-date -- my MacBook 2.0 GHz -- has problems with its USB ports. SO, now I have pressed into action an eMac with a 1.25 GHz G4 processor, and with all the other requirements (iTunes, Safari, iOS 10.5.8, etc) for sync-ing my new (Jan '13) iPhone 4S.
I did my first sync today between the iPhone 4S and the eMac, via USB hardwire and iTunes. I wanted to load up my phone with music purchases from iCloud, but felt the fastest way to do that would be to first pull all my purchases down into the eMac from iCloud, via My Previous Purchases in iTunes.  Once I entered my iTunes account info (via my Apple ID), iTunes showed me logged in. But I could not drag any music over to eMac from the 10 or so songs I have on my iPhone after downloading them from iCloud to several days ago.
I realized I had to authorize the eMac for my account. Checked the Manage Account > Manage Devices area in the iTunes Store, and it informed my that I had already used my 5 "computers" on my acccount, and two of them are iPhones. There is no information that tells me which iPhone is which, like a MAC address or EAN or serial #. One of them is probably the iPhone 4 that I just traded up from, but which I still have. The other iPhone entry shows "Associated December 28, 2012" in the listing of devices. That date matches the date I set up iCloud on my new iPhone 4S, so it should be saying that my new phone is among the 5 devices already authorized. So I just deleted the older iPhone listing, and now I have 4 devices. I just went to add in the Emac, and iTunes tells me I still have "5 computers" authorized on my account (and therefore still cannot add the eMac).
Are "devices" the same as "computers" in the eyes of iTunes DRM?
Is there a lag time in the iTunes database updating the fact that I deauthorized the (older) iPhone?

The title of my initial post is a bit misleading. I already took a chance deleting one of the iPhones, hoping if I deleted the wrong one, I can still reauthorize it (all with the same Apple ID acct, so not subject to 90-day waiting period, right?) The iTunes database just updated itself, and it says I have 4 "devices" "in the Cloud", but 5 "computers" associated w my account. How can I find out what computers are associated? Isn't there a list I can see? I dont have a clue what computers they might be. If I use the  "Deauthorize All" option, is it a pain to add them all back in. I assume I would have to log in from each computer to reauthorize each one. Would I have to be running the newest OS or version of iTunes to reauthorize? I think I have a PowerBook G4 Titanium with an older OS and iTunes. I'd like to keep that authorized, if possible.

  • Question about backing up to an external hard drive and then restoring

I want to back up my iPhone to an external hard drive rather than to CDs/DVDs, and it isn't an option under "Backup." I thought this could be done by consolidating the iTunes library and then copying the entire iTunes folder to the hard drive. But now I've read some things that make me not so sure. Can this be done? And if so, how do I restore everything if need be? I want to have a way to backup/restore in the case of having to reformat the hard drive or if I switch to using another computer. I am using a Windows computer.

Your iPhone's backup, which is created and maintained by iTunes stores data such as most iPhone settings, email account settings, contact info, SMS messages, notes, recent calls, call favorites, photos available in your iPhone's camera roll (you shouldn't depend on your iPhone's backup alone for these photos, which should be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera), and 3rd party app settings and data created and stored by a 3rd party app.
It isn't necessary to backup your iPhone's backup. You can manually update your iPhone's backup at any time without syncing, and the same when connecting your iPhone with iTunes on another computer. With your iPhone connected to iTunes and without syncing, control-click on your iPhone and at the menu window that appears, select Back Up.
Maintaining a backup of your iTunes library is much more important - copying the entire iTunes named folder to an external drive or some other external media used for backup purposes.
Since the iPhone is designed to be synced with a supported application on your computer for contact info and calendar events, you should maintain a backup of the supported application on your computer for this data. Photos transferred from your computer to your iPhone are not included with your iPhone's backup, so these photos should be included with your computer's backup along with all other important data.
When syncing an iPhone with iTunes on another computer, only iTunes content on the iPhone will be erased first, not all data on your iPhone such as contact info and calendar events. When selecting photos to be transferred to your iPhone from another computer, all photos available on your iPhone that were transferred from another computer will be erased first. If you don't select to sync contact info and calendar events with a supported application on another computer, contact info and calendar events on your iPhone will not be touched.

  • I backed up my iphone on one laptop and then restored it on another.

This was when I was updating to iOS5. My first laptop, backed everything up, and then halfway through the update, it stopped working, which then caused my phone not to turn on. I then tried restarting my machine and everything else, but it didn't work, so then I tried on my other laptop and it did the upgrade just fine, but now all the data I backed up, my contacts and pictures are lost, and there was some important things in there which I need back. Now, when I plug it into the first laptop, it doesn't restore any data or anything.
Is there anyway to solve this?

you could salvage the backup of the iphone from the org laptop
but depending on how damaged the harddrive of that laptop is it
could turn a very very very pricy matter

After "Restoring iTunes Library backup" it wont link to the files in the iTunes folder. I've followed the procedure as described, and the iTunes folder is in the correct location. iTunes lists all my music correctly (albeit with no artwork), but can't locate any of the files.
I've been restoring my iTunes folder from a backup hard drive to a new computer on which I've downloaded the latest iTunes (10.7). If this is a newer version than the one I backed up with could this be the problem? (I had the latest (to my knowledge) iTunes when I backed up the folder about 3 weeks ago, was this version 10.7?)
Or is the version of iTunes (within recent updates) not an issue when restoring a library?
    Using Windows 7.
    Any help please?

From the top of the page where the scripts live...
The general method of use is to download the script to a folder of your choice, e.g. your Desktop, Downloads folder or create a folder at ...\iTunes\Scripts. Select a playlist or highlight some tracks in iTunes and then double-click on the script to execute it. If no specific tracks are selected the script will try to work with all tracks in the current playlist. Some scripts offer a choice of track by track confirmation of changes or fully automatic processing of the selection. Many of the scripts can optionally display a progress bar while running.
You are strongly advised to backup your entire library, or at the very least the iTunes Library.itl file, before use. Test the behaviour of your chosen script on a small group of files first to make sure it does what you want before applying it to large numbers of files.
Most builds of Windows will execute *.vbs scripts when you double-click them. If that doesn't happen then you might need to visit the Add/Remove Programs or Programs & Features control panel to enable the Windows Scripting Host. I can track down details if you have issues.
Backing up and restoring data is an area that is often glossed over. Most people don't try to learn much about it until they've lost something important. (Me too )
If your iTunes library was in the usual layout then normally copying the whole iTunes folder from the User's Music folder in the old computer to the User's Music folder in the new one will usually work fine. Ideally this is done before iTunes is installed so that there is no empty library to replace, and all settings are picked up from the old library. This post contains more details.

  • HT1766 Sadly the last update is causing my battery to run constantly  even if i am not using it.  Ihave been told to reset my iphone and then set it up as a new device .  How do I do this and keep my contacts and calendar?

I recently did an update and my iphone 4 battery now drains within 6 hours (preveiously would be fine for 36 hours),  I was told to reset my iphone and then set it up as a new phone , so as not to have the problem recur.  How do I do this and maintain my contacts and calendar if I am not using my computer back up?

Of course the battery "runs" constantly, otherwise the phone would die.  Duh!
Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

  • We want to purchase a new iPhone but don't want to lose the text messages on that phone.  Can they be uploaded and then restored onto the new phone

we plan on buying an iphone 5 but don't want to lose the text messges we have on our iPhone 4s.   is there a way to upload the texts and then download them onto the new phone

Text messages are included in your iPhone backup.  Before switching over to the new phone, back up the old one, then restore this backup to your new phone.  That will transfer text messages, along with other data and settings, as well as your apps and other purchased media.  More details here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2109.

Can I create a 2nd iTunes account on one PC that caters for two seperate devices for different people?

For what reason would you do that?
Simply connect the device, select the content desired to sync and sync.
iTunes remembers the sync profile per device.

  • Recording on two seperate devices

I ran into a confusing request. What do you do when you need
to record a program that runs simultaneously on two seperate
devices (PCs). Has anyone ever come across this? I'm just trying to
figure out an effective way of showing both PCs...

If you're just trying to let the user see the difference,
another thought is to keep the Windows theme the same on both
workstations and show the screenshot from Computer A as the slide
background and show the screenshot from Computer B as a rollover
    image.
This lets the user do an A/B comparison as many times as it
takes to get all the differences. You can even add callouts to the
computer B image to highlight the changed items. Assuming the two
screens are similar with the same dimensions, it can be very
    effective.
