Can I backup and restore my itunes media using a hard drive?

Can I backup and restore files if I used a hard drive?
I do not want to backup my entire itunes library of >200 GB to individual CDs and DVDs, if I can help it; it will take forever. Hence the above question.

Are you saying that you contacted Apple support and they instructed you to backup and restore your iPad? Or do you mean that you picked up this information from an online support article? If you spoke to an Apple rep or received these instructions via email, contact them again for further help.
I fail to see how restoring your iPad would enable yoyr Apple ID.

Hi Maastricht2014,
Until and unless you remember the password to your old email address, you will not be able to access the eBooks as those eBooks are only authorized with your old email address only.
The only workaround or alternative to access your eBooks will be to contact the eBook vendor and ask them to migrate the eBook from your old email to the new one.

I had to reformat my computer and put my Itunes on an external hard drive. Once I fixed my computer and put Itunes back I can't itunes to open on my PC. I see it but it appears locked now.

Any way to import from my touch what is on it, I have not connected it to my PC since.
I did get all my music purchased on, but under purchased I can't find my movies.

You can open a command prompt by hitting the start button and typing CMD<Enter> in the search box that opens up.
To move the current backup folder from C: to D: type in this command and press <Enter>
Move "C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "D:\Backup"
Where <User> is your Windows user name.
To make iTunes look for the data in the new location type in this command and press <Enter>
MkLink /J "C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "D:\Backup"
If your external drive has a different letter or you already have a folder called "Backup" then edit "D:\Backup" accordingly in both commands.

My external hard drive is 'seen' by my iMac and I can go into the Finder and open files and folders. I am using the hard drive for Time Machine back up. However Time Machine says it can't find the drive. Same thing has happened with Final Cut Express.

You cannot have time machine backups on your hard drive if you intend to use it in FCPX.

Can I backup and restore on a new computer without changing my main iTunes computer?

I just got AT&T to unlock my iPhone so that I can use it on multiple networks while I am traveling. In order to complete the unlock, I must backup and restore the iPhone on my iTunes. Unfortunately, my iMac that I use to sync my iPhone is being shipped across the planet and I won't have it for about a month. Is it possible to install iTunes on a new computer and conduct a backup and restore, without losing anything on the iPhone and still be able to sync with my iMac when I receive it?

Anything in particular I need to be aware of? i.e. after I install iTunes on the new PC and connect my iPhone, do I need to do anything specific to ensure that the phone is not overwritten? Is it that simple that I can just connect the phone and it will back it up, then I do a restore and done? I am following the directions for "Moving your iTunes Media folder" set-by-step. When I get to the step "choose Library and then Organize Library" I get an error that there is not enough room on the hard drive to copy the media files. I purchased a new Iomega eGo 250 GB for this. (My media files are only 20 GB and I only have 100 GB hard drive.) I also tried my Time Machine 500 GB drive with 300 GB free on it and got the same error. (I can copy the iTunes folders over to both drives manually but then iTunes does not see the files.)

Your content will only be where you put it. it does not magically appear anywhere.
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just this occasion. Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup, not good, then you can redownload some itunes purchases in some countries.

How come a USB will work with both Mac and Windows (as in that there are already files from Windows and Mac can still read and write onto it) but a external Hard Drive won't (as in there are files from Windows on there but Mac can read but not write)?

I have a Seagate Drive that I'm hoping to copy some movies from my Mac onto (because it only has a 512 SSD and I'd rather keep that empty and handy for more readily needed files) but it won't work. Why won't it work with this hard drive and would work with USBs? We will need to reformat your EXT, but it will then work on both Mac and Win
Connect the drive to your Mac, open disk utility
Go to the partiton tab and select '1' ... format should be ExFAT ... in options select MBR
Format the drive
It should now work on both OSs; report back

How do I restore my itunes from a ext hard driver?

I have followed the instuctions I have opened both dirves (PC and ext drive) went to Users/Username/music I did a drag drop the file on the ext hard drive told it to replace the one on my PC. I dont thnk its copying it dose it intantly it shows the correct size but nothing is there. I then helf the shift key as I started itunes and seleted choose but then it dosent show up to select.

If you connect an external hard drive with music, iTunes won't know the music exists there until you tell it. There are two simple ways to tell the application about the music. 1) Drag the folder(s) that contain music files onto the iTunes icon on the Dock or 2) select Add to Library from the File menu and then use the fileselector to select the drive with the music.

EDIT: If you want the tracks to remain on the external drive (you may not; I may have misread), you can just drag the entire iTunes folder (the entire folder, not just the iTunes Music folder) to your desired location. Then hold down the Shift key while launching iTunes. You'll be given a dialog box where you can select the iTunes library you want to use. Navigate to and select the iTunes folder in it's new location.
Don't delete the tracks from the old location until you've confirmed that they're working correctly from the external drive.
Otherwise, follow Chris' steps.

Can't drag and drop from iTunes after using Ion USB/ EZ Converter

I am new to transferring old vinyl to mp3, and want to make a CD.
I have the tracks in iTunes now- they play perfectly well, but I cannot drag them onto my desktop (to then transfer to Toast).
Before the tracks were reading as wav, but now they are mp3, however, I did use the "Create mp3 version" feature, so have I confused my Mac, but "re-mp3ing" my tracks?

Release the mouse when you see the symbol with the line through it; you should then be given the option to authenticate in the dialog which appears. If so, choose this option and provide an administrator password when prompted. If not or if the option doesn't work, move the files to another location inside your home folder.
