Can I backup iPhoto pics on .Mac?

I have a trial version of .Mac. Can I backup m iPhotos using .Mac?

The Backup application will back items up to your iDisk when you have a trial .Mac account, and you can also drag the entire iPhoto library from the Pictures item in the Finder's sidebar to the iDisk unless the library is too large to fit on the iDisk.

That's exactly what I tried to do, but the iPhoto librry doesn't show up in the pulldown menu. If I click "Choose Folder", the iPhoto library is greyed out and unable to be selected.
For some reason, iPhoto is an option in the pulldown library on my older iMac but not on my MacBook Pro. What gives?

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • Can't find iPhoto pics in new MBPro

I just got a new MBPro 13 Retina and had Apple do the data migration from my old MBPro. However, I can't find the pics on either computer. Where are they?

I have no idea. But have you used Sptlight to search for .jpg? Have you opened iPhoto on the new Mac.
Also download ansd install EasyFind and search for iPhoto Library.photolibrary. It should be in your Username folder under Pictures.
Open a Finder window and go to the folder Users, do you see 2 user names there or just one?

  • How can I get iPhoto on my Mac to recognize my new iPhone 6?  (iTunes does recognize it!)

I got one of the new iPhone 6s (the smaller version) and it's been working great.  I was able to restore an old backup from my 4S and transferred everything over.  iTunes recognizes the new phone and I've had no problems bringing files within apps on the phone to the computer like before.  HOWEVER, iPhoto doesn't even recognize the phone so I can't import new photos off the phone.  How can I get iPhoto to recognize it?  I tried searching for the phone as a drive via iPhoto and that didn't work either.

So says my computer.  Honestly, I'm not tech-wavy in the least so I just take its word for things.

  • Can't backup iPhoto library to external drive

I've tried three times today to backup my iPhoto libray to an external hard drive.  The file is 22.2 GB in size. Using Firewire the transfer is supposed to take about 45 mninutes.  Each time at around :25-:30 it suddenly stops and I get an error message that it can't complete the transfer due to corrupted data.  But it doesn't say where in the file the corrupted data is located.  Any ideas on how to get around this problem?  Do I need to export every photo I have and then re-import and even then how will I know that the new file won't be corrupted?  I tried to open the backup iPhoto file to see if I could see which photos didn;t tarbsfer and work back from there.  Unfortunately I think it opens the original library on the computer instead since all the photos can be seen.  Any ideas/help?

    What version of iPhoto?

  • Can't backup iPhoto

Since upgrading to Lion I cannot backup iphoto library  to external drive. Using iPhoto 8.1.2.  Error message "The operation can’t be completed because the item “iPhoto Library” is in use."  Prior to upgrade to Lion I made a backup of data on an external drive and now cannot copy the Library to that drive's "Pictures" folder.  Copying other data works fine.  My Time Machine is also not working so I don't have any other backups from which to restore.  Thought the Finder might be using it so removed Pictures from the sidebar list.  I don't know if this matters but when I do App Expose I see 2 iphoto library icons at the bottom of the screen.

I am just trying to copy the iPhoto Library to an external HD.
I have tried rebooting and a lot of other things, my saga is detailed in this discussion:https://discussions.apple.com/message/18379564#18379564
I may have a bad hard drive so I am going to try an get a new drive and try TM again.

  • Can't install iphoto 6 on mac g4

HI, is there a trick to installing iphoto 6 on a g4 flat panel. 700hz machine. It won't install. Says there is an error. Tried everything. Thanks.

Yes, that easy, unless you’re a: Using the wrong disk (for instance, trying to install it from a System Restore disk from another model of Mac) b: A faulty disk or c: a faulty drive.
That machine can certainly run iPhoto 6.

  • Help!  Can't copy iPhoto pics to external hard drive anymore

All of a sudden, I can no longer drag pics from iPhoto to my external hard drive.  I've done this with no problem for at least six months, and now, can't do it.  The hard drive is a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1.5 TB.  It has a 3.0 USB cord.  No issues up until now.  I can still drag music to the external with no issues, but fro some reason, not photos.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The interesting thing is that for the first year I have had the external hard drive, this was my routine:
    1. Have iPhoto and External Hard Drive both open
    2. Create and name folder on EHD
    3. Put cursor on folder of pics on iPhoto I wanted to copy
    4. Click, hold, drag, and drop in folder
    5. Copying automatically starts and finishes
Now, in order to copy, I have to open the particular folder on iPhoto, select all, copy all, then go to the EHD folder and select paste.
This isn't much more, but I guess I'm wondering what happenend on my EHD or iPhoto to make the "drag and drop" inaccessible all of a sudden?

  • Can i share iPhoto libraries between macs

I just bought a MacBook Air and am looking to share the library in my iPhoto between my iMac and MacBook Air.  Is this possible?

You can try Pointing iPhoto on the Air to the iPhoto Library that is on you iMac. It is in your user folder. This means that that Library will only be accessible when both systems are on the same LAN (Network) and can actually talk to one another (Netwroked together).
When Opeiing iPhoto on the Air hold down the Option key and a windows will come up asking "What Library do you want to use". Browse, over the network, to the iMac and to the original iPhoto Library and select it.

  • Trying to backup iPhoto pics from Time Machine

I need some serious help figuring out how to get my photos onto CDs for backup purposes.
BACKGROUND: My laptop is running out of space, causing programs to run slowly. The Mac Genius at the local Apple store recommended I clear up space by cleaning up my iPhoto library which has photos dating back several years. Because I have the entire hard drive backed up on my external hard drive and accessible through Time Machine, here is what I did:
    1. Deleted all Events prior to 1/08, thus keeping only 2 years of photos on my laptop. As a result, the available memory was barely affected since--as I discovered--this only moved the photos to the iPhoto trash.
    2. So I started "restoring" events one by one and moving them to a folder on my desktop so I could burn CDs as backup.
    PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED:
    1. All photo information (time & date stamp) has been lost in this process.
    2. Restoring photos one album or event at a time is time consuming and causing photos to take up double the space! Running out of memory really fast!
So, I deleted all the photos (4,000 of them) from my iPhoto trash.
NEW PROBLEM: Yes, I can restore photos from the Time Machine (which means they import to today's iPhoto Library), but when I try to copy them from iPhoto into the desktop folder to burn a CD, the program tells me the photos have been deleted and they cannot be moved out of iPhoto!!!
Okay, so how do I create a CD backup of my photos? It's all well and good that I have these photos on an external hard drive, but how do I actually use them in the future? If I want to print out these photos or share them with others, how will I be able to actually "get them"???
Is there a way to burn a CD directly from Time Machine? Will it keep my photos in albums or events so as to easily sort them later?
Please help! I'm terrified I have lost 3 years of our family history because of this! Also, I cannot use my iMovie program at all because there is not enough memory available.

this only moved the photos to the iPhoto trash.
Didn't you use the iPhoto->Empty Trash menu option to remove the photos from the library and the hard drive? (Deleting more that about 50 at a time can cause iPhoto to freeze).
All photo information (time & date stamp) has been lost in this process
To keep the metadata and other information the photos have to be exported out of iPhoto with the options to "Include title and keywords" and Location Information".
If you want to export directly to a CD try using iPhoto to Disk. It will keep titles and such but I'm not sure about other metadata. Otherwise export each Event to a folder and burn that folder to disk in the Finder.
You can recover some real estate on your boot drive by: using Monolingual to remove all of the language modules except English and American English. I freed up nearly 1 GB of space the first time I ran it. For optimum safety and performance at least 10 GB of free space (20GB if you use iDVD) should be available on the boot drive.
With the low cost of external FW hard drives you can add a second external HD to the mix and run your full library off of it. Then add a smaller library with just the photos you might want to take with you if you travel with your MBP. You can use the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager to copy albums or events between libraries and keep all metadata, Faces and Places intact.

  • Can't Open iPhoto Pics & Movies!

In iPhoto I can see my pics & movies in the EVENT window but when I try to open them I get the following error messages:
PICS- I see a black screen with an exclamation mark in the center of a triangle.
MOVIES- I receive the following message, "The movie contains an invalid data reference."
I used to be able to open these file before and do not understand why I am having this problem now.  Also, I have backed up files four times using the "Time Machine,"  I hope this didn't mess up my program.  My iPhoto was updated to version 9.2.3 (if this helps)
Please help! I need these images for a project I am to complete by Wednesday.
    Thanks So Much
    Cryptolith

PICS- I see a black screen with an exclamation mark in the center of a triangle.
MOVIES- I receive the following message, "The movie contains an invalid data reference."
Both mean the same thing:  iPhoto has lost the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Can't use iphoto pics for desktop wallpaper...

    Evening -
I have my pictures saved in Users/shared/pictures so both my wife and i have easy access to them via our respective user accounts.
In iphoto i simply imported this folder and the iphoto library was created with no hassle. I unchecked the option to "copy" the pictures to my library so i wouldn't waste disk space unnecesarily.
The problem is when i choose my iphoto directory in System Preferences - desktop and screensaver, i cannot use any of my pictures for the desktop wallpaper through the iphoto folder (the wallpaper just changes to blue"). In order to use a photo i must point the desktop wallpaper application to look for the picture in the original directory users/shared/pictures....
    Any ideas why?
    Thank u for any help

I unchecked the option to "copy" the pictures to my library so i wouldn't waste disk space unnecesarily.
When you run a Referenced library in iPhoto the desktop pictures option doesn't work. It's one of the pitfalls with running a referenced Library along with
    1. Import and deleting pics are more complex procedures
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
Always allowing for personal preference, I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers.
You can share a library between users:
There are two ways to share, depending on what you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc. then:
    Quit iPhoto in both accounts
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to an external HD set to ignore permissions. You could also use a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.
In each account in turn: Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue, select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new library location. From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.
Finally: If you’re comfortable in the Terminal, and understand File Permissions, ACL’s etc., some folks have reported success using the process outlined here . (Note this page refers to 10.4, but it should also work on 10.5). If you’re not comfortable with the terminal, and don’t know an ACL from the ACLU, then you’re best doing something else... Oh, and the warning about simultaneous users still applies.

  • Can't Backup iPhoto 8

Since upgrading to iPhoto 8, I have been unable to make a backup copy of my iPhoto database. I used to be able to drive the Pictures folder (along with the enclosed iPhoto archive) onto an external hard drive. Now every time I try to do it, I receive the following warning:
"The operation cannot be completed because the item "iPhoto Library" is in use."
I've tried correcting the permissions on the computer (a MacBook Pro) and also tried restarting the computer in the "Safe Boot" mode. And I still receive the same warning. Anybody have an idea what is happening here?
    Thanks for your help.

Give LaCie's free backup application, SilverKeeper, a try. It will do incremental backups of selected folders/packages, etc. I used it to check out it's capabilities. I currently use Synk Standard. There are several other backup applications that can do the job. I believe the January issue of MacWorld had a review of several apps.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
