Can I backup my laptop on the time capsule that is currently backing up my iMac data?

Can I backup my Apple laptop on my time capsule which is currently backing up my iMac?

Yes, assuming that there is ample room on the Time Capsule disk for all of the files on your laptop.

  • Can I create a network where the Time Capsule gets its internet connection from my iMac?

    Hi,
I've recently bought a Time Capsulebut I'm having some problems with it on my university network. It is an Eduroam network, so each computer has to authenticate before it can get an Internet connection – I can't use the Time Capsule normally as it is unable to authenticate to the network. However, I'd like to be able to create a smaller network in my room (with my computer and iDevices on so that I can use Remote and stuff, as well as to potentially get my Xbox and Kindle, which can't connect either, online).
Last time I did this, I had my iMac create an internet connection which it shared with everything else. (This was before I had the Time Capsule.) One way of solving it seems like it might be to share the Wifi internet connection with the Time Capsule through the ethernet, and then the Time Capsule can share the interent to everything else. Would this be possible? Or can you think of any other way that this could be done?
In other terms, I have an iMac, a Time Capsule, an iPhone and iPad, a Kindle and an Xbox. Only the iMac can connect to the internet and I'd like them all to be able to, as well as being on the same network. Is this possible?
    Thanks!

DropBox is another possibility for sharing files and it is free for the first 2GB of storage.

Thank you William for your most helpful response. I shall deal first with your three comments:
Not being tech savvy, I would not have been able to make that call myself but it sure makes sense.
I have updated my profiles as you suggest.  Excellent tip.
This guidance is good.  Being new to Apple Support Communities, I did not find the field a labeling and guidance to be clear, a point you make.  Now I know, I shall do as you say and will use the small slim box as a header to the full message/question, which will place in the larger box below.
Secondly, I come to your question: Did anything change on your Mac recently, such as replacing the disk or main logic board?
The answer is “yes”.  Two events have happened both of which concerned the Time Capsule:
The telephone company, with which I have access to the Internet and I have my email account, installed a new modum.  After the technician left I had to try and get the Time Capsule and WiFi working again which ended with my having to call Apple for technical assistance.  The Apple technician walked me through a number of procedural steps which effectively re-set up the Time Capsule.
Access to the Internet failed and the telephone company reset the modum.  I had to call Apple again.  This time the technician did not reset the Time Capsule but walked me through a number of steps tha included renaming the “site”  (not the Time Capsule).
Another piece of information that may be relevant is that the MacBook Pro uses the Time Capsule for backup.  Everything appears to be in order.  When I enter the Time Capsule for this laptop I have backups going back for a long time.
Also, I do a weekly backup of the two computers onto another external hard drive using the Time Machine software.  So I have another backup of both computers.

  • Can I backup my Ipad directly to Time Capsule

Is there a way to backup an Ipad without connecting directly to a Mac or PC?

can I backup my iPad directly to Time Capsule?
    In a word, no.
The iPad backs up to iTunes on your Mac or PC. Then, the Mac backs up in turn using Time Machine to the Time Capsule.
Your other option is to backup the iPad using iCloud.
See this Apple support document for complete info on iOS backups:

  • Can i store my movies on the time capsule and access to watch on my new ipad?

can I store my movies on the time capsule and access wireless to watch on my new ipad?

TC is not a media player.. it has no smarts whatsoever.
If you have an app on the ipad to play files.. then the ipad can play files from anywhere.. even the TC.. but the TC contributes nothing. Do not move your itunes library to the TC.. that is asking for trouble.

  • Is there a way to backup a PC with the Time Capsule?

Is there a way to backup a PC with the Time Capsule?

Yes, but unfortunately not with Time Machine. You could; however, use any PC backup product that supports network drives as a destination for their backups. One such product is Genie9's Genie Backup Manager Home.
Genie9 offers a similar option for Time Machine for PCs, called Genie Timeline Home. It is advertised to support backups to "NAS and network storages," but several folks who have this reported that it wasn't able to backup to a Time Capsule. If you decide to give either Genie9 product a try, please be sure to give their trial versions a go to make it works for your situation.

  • If I connect an external hard drive to the Time Capsule, all it automatically back it up?

If I connect an external hard drive to the Time Capsule, will it automatically back it up? Or do I need to somehow configure it in TIme Machine?

A HDD attached to the Time Capsule (TC) will not automatically back it up, nor can you configure Time Machine to do so. However, you can use the AirPort Utility to archive the contents of your TC's internal HDD to this attached drive.

  • Time Capsule--can I back up Two different Laptops on the Time Capsule?

It's just about that easy. I just got the Time Capsule. I backed up my MacBook Pro. Now I'd like to use the same Time Capsule to back up my wife's MacBook. Can this be done? If so, how? I keep getting the failed message from the Time Machine Backup.
    Thanks for the help.
    Dave

No question that it can be done. I just got a new MacBook a couple of weeks ago and I am backing it up to our TC alongside my son who has been using it since last Sept. with his MacBook. There was no problem setting it up. I just clicked on TimeMachine in the Dock and it asked me where I wanted to back my files up to. The only choice was the existing Time Capsule. I clicked and away it went. I took the advice of others and connected my Mac directly to the TC for the initial backup instead of relying on the wireless. It only took a couple of hours.
What specific error do you get?

  • How can you retrieve photo's from the time capsule(airport)

    Hi
I recently had a problem with my mac and had to archive my stuff and put the operating system back on my computer.
I 'lost' everything however I have been able to get some things back from the time capsule (airport) from previous backups. I can not find my photo's and they are the most important things I want back on my computer.
Can anyone help? I have tried various things but still can't find them.
    thanks Lorraine

If you did an Archive and Install, look for your "Previous System" folder and check for iPhoto in it.

  • Can I store files on the Time Capsule that I do not want to keep on my macbook pro?

I want to store a large quantity of powerpoint files for my reference but do not want to bog my hard drive down on my macbook pro.  Is this possible or does the time capusle only back up what is currently on my laptop?

If you delete the "original" files on your Mac, then Time Machine....which tracks changes on your Mac....will at some point delete the files as well from the backups.  You just don't know when.
Even if the files stay on your Time Capsule for some time.....you have no backups in the event of problem with the Time Capsule, since your backups are now the only copies that you have.
Suggest that you add an external hard drive to your Mac and move the PowerPoint files over there. Then, Time Machine will backup both your Mac and the hard drive.
So, you have a good backup strategy with "originals" on one drive and "backups" on another.

  • Can I create pic folders on the time capsule

Can I use the time capsule as a remote hard drive and create my on folders fir remote storage of pictures?

Can I use the time capsule as a remote hard drive and create my on folders fir remote storage of pictures?
While it is possible to store data other than Time Machine backups on the Time Capsule disk, it is not really recommended since you are taking space away from Time Machine for backups.
If you have plenty of free space, you may be OK. But.....if you store your images on the Time Capsule disk.....you will not have any backups for them, correct?  When....not if....you have a problem with the Time Capsule drive, you will lose all of your images.
A much better and safer plan would be to add an external USB or Firewire hard drive and attach it directly to your Mac. Then, Time Machine will backup both your Mac and the external hard drive. So, you have "originals" on one disk, and "backups" on another disk. If/when one drive fails, you still have copies on another drive.

  • Can I stream things directly from the time capsule to my AppleTv without using my computer?

I have an older MacBook and I'm worried about the storage so I want to get things moved to a Time Capsule.  I was just wondering if I can stream things directly from the Time Capsule to the AppleTV without having to store them in iTunes on my computer and play them off of there.

You cannot stream from a TC .. it is not a media device.. you can store movie files on the TC but you still need to run the computer to play them.
Depending on how you connect this can cause dramatic slowdowns.
A WD Live TV can play raw movie files from a TC.. because it is not a media streamer which is all the ATV is, it is a full media player.

  • Can I connect my iTouch to the Time Capsule?

I am hoping to connect my iTouch to my Time Capsule, so the iTouch will sync with iTunes via the network.  Is this possible?  I have attached the iTouch to the Time Capsule USB port, but when I open iTunes, my iTouch does not appear.
I contacted Apple Support a few weeks ago about this.  The suprisingly unhelpful fellow said that it was not a Time Capsule issue and that if I wanted help, he could redirect me to the iTouch support contingent.  If he transferred me, though, he warned, I would have to pay a fee because my iTouch was more than 90 days old.
Honestly, I was miffed!  I would think Apple Support would help me connect other Apple peripherals to an Apple peripheral, for the Time Capsule is only 1 month old and eligible for free support.
    But enough ranting, any advice?

There are so many ideals in our worlds, aren't there?
Another question you could perhaps help me with.  I am using my TC as an external hard disk as well.  I will want to purchase another hard disk to back up the data on the TC.  A 500 GB disk will do.  Should I get one with an external power source?  Or a plug-and-play?
I tried to do this with an older hard disk drive, but the TC would not recognize it.  I was able to do a back-up by connecting the TC by ethernet cable to the computer and the hard drive by USB to the computer.  But I'd like to get a drive that the TC will recognize and use CCCloner to back up automatically my files on the TC to an external hard drive.  I would like to connect the hard disk directly to the TC via an ethernet port or the ideally-and-sensically-free USB port.
As a test, I just plugged a USB key into the TC, but the TC does not recognize it.  When I plug it into the MacBook, the MacBook does recognize it.  It is formatted as FAT32.  I am nervous about purchasing a disk that the TC won't recognize.
    Thanks again for your help!

  • Is it possible to connect an external drive to the time capsule that I could use to store and access my primary iTunes files?

I would like to move my music files to an external drive that my iMac iTunes could access wirelessly and I'm wondering if it is possible to do so through connecting a drive to my Time Capsule.

This can be done....but if you move your iTunes Media folder to the drive that is connected to the Time Capsule, you might first want to think about how you will backup these important files.
Time Machine cannot backup the files back to the Time Capsule, so you will need to use a commercial backup application like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to copy the files back to the Time Capsule drive.
As long as you plan to add a hard drive, you might want to consider an alternate plan:
Connect a hard drive directly to your Mac using USB or FireWire and move the iTunes Media Library there. Then, Time Machine will back up both your Mac and the hard drive, so you have original copies on one drive and backups on another.
Whatever you decide, be sure to follow the correct instructions to move the iTunes Media Folder. You cannot simply drag and drop.
