Is it possible to backup and sync an iPhone 4 and an iPhone 3Gs to the same laptop and iTunes account? My wife and I both have iPhones. Her laptop just crashed, so we only have one laptop to use as a back up / sync now.

Yes, iTunes will maintain separate backups for each device. Note, however, ALL iTunes content, presently on your wife's phone will be erased when you first sync it to your computer. If you create an Apple ID for your daughter, signing out of the existing Apple ID with the iTunes & App Store on her iPhone will not change anything on your iPhone.
All apps include DRM protection which is tied to the Apple ID that was used to download the apps.
If she starts using her Apple ID to download apps, when there is an app update for an app on her iPhone that was downloaded with the current shared Apple ID, she will need to use that Apple ID and password to download the app updates.

Yes. My wife and I each have our own Apple ID and used the same computer to sync our phones with iTunes. The best way to do this is set up separate user accounts on the computer. If you are logged in to your account on the computer and your wife wants to sync here phone, you would log out and she would log in. These keeps all your stuff separate and avoids a ton of confusion.

Yes, you can use the same computer for BACK UPS, RESTORING AND UPDATING. But that is it.
You cannot, however, use it to sync the different devices. iTunes will only recognize one device to sync with and if you sync any other devices with that iTunes library, it will replace what is on the phone with whatever is in the library. It cannot differentiate between devices. At most, it will jsut recognize that the phone has been synced with a different iTunes library.
So if you would like to use the same computer for backing up, restoring and updating, just make sure to turn of Automatic Syncing in your iTunes Preferences.

You can keep the same Apple ID for purchases, but set up her own iCloud account for email and syncing.
You can easily and effectively use the same ID for purchases.
What you do is use the apple ID you have been using for app/book/movie/music purchases. In Settings > Store, make sure you are using your usual apple ID.
Then, set up an icloud (@me.com) account for you on your phone, and one for your daughter on her phone. In Settings > iCloud, make sure each of you are using your new iCloud accounts, and not your Apple ID.
Also, in Settings > Messages > Receive At, make sure you are using your iCloud accounts
This way, all of your purchases are using one account, and you can effectively use iCloud.

Has anyone been successful in syncing two iPhones to the same iTunes account. I am the main user of our Mac and my wife just uses it for email and internet browsing. Basically she uses my user account and therefore we share one contacts list, one calendar, one iTunes, and both use the same Mac Mail with our own email addresses. Both also want to use MobileMe.

Yes.. It is a very difficult process.. First, log into 1 computer with your account and Authorize that computer to use the iPhone. then Sync your phone.. Log out and go to the second computer.. login and Authorize then sync your phone.

Not that I'm aware of. What exactly is that you want to achieve? There are tools for scanning media folders and adding any files not listed in the library, or deleting those that no longer exist. There are also ways to use one library for multiple users so that any tag update gets applied for everyone.

Why in the world would I want to create an new Apple ID for everyone in my family & over complicate things?!? "Face Time" and "Messages" can tie several devices to on Apple ID driven by contact email or phone number. I am hard pressed to believe that Find my Friends can't be set up in a similar format.
Please help because this is frustrating me to the point of smashing an iPhone or 2!!

Allan I have my iPod, MacBook and iPad synched with it. How will synching my husband's phone impact my music & Apps? When I synch my phone do I just uncheck his apps so they don't go on my phone and he does the same? Also for instance on game center on my iPhone I had to enter our apple ID and password to get in. You can sync as many iphones as yuou like to one computer.
Syncing to a different comuter will erase all of your itunes contetn and pics from the iphone and replace with content from the new computer.
If the new computer has at least one unique contact on it, then you will get the option to merge the data. Same with calendar.
Copy everything from your backup copy of your computer to his.
