Can I boost Airport's power?

Apologies if this is a silly question. We have two i-macs at home. We have just bought Time Capsule which we are connecting to our ISP's Motorola cable modem. Up until now we ran a Netscape wireless router off the same modem.
We have connected one of the computers (this one, which I'll call Computer #1) to Time Capsule via ethernet, and the internet speed is excellent .... far better than it had been under our previous set up. However, the other computer (in a room about 30 feet away, and which I'll call Computer #2) has a really weak Airport signal (only the bottom dot in the Airport icon in the Menu Bar showing at any time). We're finding it hard to get a decent internet connection at all. I hasten to add that this was also the case under the previous set up (and one of the reasons we bought Time Capsule in the first place).
Even when I try to get into Airport Utilities on Computer #2, the Time Capsule doesn't always show up as being in range.
I can't seem to see anywhere in systems preferences or Airport utilities where I can boost the signal out of Computer #2's Airport card (an AirPort Extreme card). Does anybody know if there's any way I can do that? Or if there's anything that I'm missing? Thanks for any assistance you might be able to provide.

I have a new AP Extreme and since day 1 it has been anemic at best. My older Linksys router had power to reach about 50% farther.. and it was 801.11 g. For the last few days I have gone around and around with Apple Tech. The problem was my microwave. The problem was my telephone. The problem was always something environmental. When confronted with the fact that my old Linksys system didn't have these 'environmental' problems, I was usually put on hold. Sometimes disconnected.... (sometimes called back by Tech Support-- 3 cheers)
Today all that changed. I got a hold of Bonnie. She had great perseverance and kept working the problem until we got the solution.
We changed the channel to No. 3. Ba boom. Full power everywhere!! It had been on 'automatic' and channel No. 11. Those didn't change the weak, fluctuating (on again... off again.... strong... then weak) signal. Channel NO. 3 did the trick. Why? I don't know. What do the channels do? I don't know.
So, all I say is "try it".

Can I boost the DSL signal using my 1st Generation Airport Extreme or Express?
I just moved into a house where they have ATT DSL and it is really slow in my room.  I am hoping that I don't have to purchase a booster and I might be able to use my Airport Extreme or Express to boost it.  I don't think they want my Extreme as their router, though.  They are PC.
I am also hoping that I can set up a wireless printing situation in my room using the Express or Extreme.
I am running 10.4.11 on my old MacBook Pro laptop, 10.5.something on my old desktop (MacMini).
Thanks for any help ahead of time,

Can I boost the DSL signal using my 1st Generation Airport Extreme or Express?

Unfortunately, this won't work especially if you want the connection between the routers to be wireless. The two are just not compatible for configuring an extended network. However, it could work if you can have them interconnected by wire. In that case, you could configure them into a roaming network.
I don't think they want my Extreme as their router, though.  They are PC.
This shouldn't be an issue as the AirPorts support wireless clients regardless of which operating system they are running.

  • Can I use AirPort Express as booster/extender to LinkSys router signal?

I have LinkSys N router (which I got free, else would've bought AirPort), its signal isn't strong enough in office room.  Can I use AirPort Express as a booster/extender?  Some sources say Express can only talk to another Express, others say it can communicate with the LinkSys.  Which is it?  I don't want to spend the money for two Expresses unless I have no choice (very limited budget nowadays).
I've been hassling with this for over a month, and I'm extremely frustrated.
Thanks to anybody who can help me with this.

Most likely no. That is because most non-Apple router's implementation of WDS is not compatible ... and this is true the other way around. It is true that some early Linksys models, mainly the WRT-54 series were compatible, but I have not seen anything since then that is.

  • Airport Express power cord

I was wondering if there is a way to only buy power plug cord that can allow the Airport Express to not be on the wall?  I'd like to connect the cords needed for airtunes, but cannot do it without putting an extension cord on the AE (or using the power plug cord that came with my MacBook) as my extension cord .
As far as I can tell, I find the powercord for powering the MacBook for $79.  Or, I find a kit that has the sound cables with the extension cord I need for the AE for $39.  But, I only need the extension cord.

was wondering if there is a way to only buy power plug cord that can allow the Airport Express to not be on the wall?
You might consider plugging the AirPort Express into a normal white extension cord.
A better solution would be to plug the Express into a surge protector / power strip for added protection against over voltage, power outages or nearby lightining strikes.

  • PowerBook Can't Run Airport Management Utility

I'm still trying to find out why my PowerBook can't run Airport Management Utility, even though all of my other Airport software is up to date. When I try to launch the utility, it gives the message that it "requires Airport 3.4 or later", which I do already have.
Below is a description of my latest effort, followed by my original question, which has been archived in this discussion group.
I created and logged in via a new user account, but I still got the same 'requires Airport 3.4 or later' message from Airport Management Utility. I took it from this that the problem was not related to user preferences.
I then used Spotlight to search the Library folder. The only airport pref I found there was com.apple.airport.preferences.plist, located in this path: Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration.
The computer would not let me move this to the desktop, but copied it instead. I can open that copy in TextEdit, but if I double click on it, it actually launches in OmniOutlner. A check via "Get Info" shows that it is set to "Open with: OmniOutliner" from the drop down menu in the Get Info box.
If you open this plist in OmiOutliner, you find the information I've listed below. It appears to show that the file does know the Airport software version is "5" and not less than 3.4:
    • Disconnect on logout 0
    • AllowEnable 0
    ▶ Default 802.1X Configurations
    • InterferenceRobustness 0
    • Require Admin for network 0
    change
    • JoinMode 1
    • Always remember new networks 1
    ▶ List of known networks
    • Version 5
    • Require Admin for IBSS creation 1
    • Fallback Preference 0
The only other items in the Library folder with "airport" in the name are both in the Receipts folder: AirportTI2005-001.pkg and AirportConfigApps.pkg.
I'd welcome your thoughts on this.
    My original posting was:
I have the newest PowerBook G4 , purchased this fall with Mac OS X 10.4.3 and AirPort Update 2005-001 installed.
When I try to run Airport Management utility I get the message : " "The Airport Management Utility requires Airport 3.4 or later. Click Update to check for newer software." While Airport Management Utility will not run on my PowerBook, it does run on my iMac with 10.3.9.
    I've tried:
-installing "AirPort Update 2005-001" but it didn't solve the problem.
-installing "AirPort 4.2 for Mac OS X 10.4.2", thinking that if it were not needed, the installer would not run. It did install, but that did not solve the problem.
-re-installing "AirPort Update 2005-001", which did install a second time, but did not solve the problem. (I thought perhaps the installer for this update wouldn't run a second time.)
Does anyone know of a solution, or does Apple need to update Airport Management Utility?
(I've cross-posted this in the Airport discussion area, but I also wanted to check with others who recently bought the same PowerBook.)
    Thanks for your help.

"OK, I've been following this thread since February and I think I got this thing figured out. Joseph Jordan pointed to the right direction and I did some more digging.
I had the same problem as most posters here:
    - ALL 10.3 machines had AirPort Management Utility working but,
    - NOT ALL 10.4 machines had AirPort Management Utility working.
In my case, no 10.4 computer had AMU working (updated from 10.3 or fresh install of 10.4, Intel or PowerPC, even brand new MacBook Pro and PowerBook G4 out of the box), EXCEPT one xserve that was updated from 10.3.
As I said before, Joseph Jordan pointed to the right direction, the file/folder AirPortConfig.framework in /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ is missing.
It seems that AirPortConfig.framework was installed when AirPort 4.1 was installed. AirPort 4.2 installs Apple80211.framework only. I think...
In some cases, AirPortConfig.framework is there (updated machines), but the file AirPortConfig is missing in AirPortConfig.framework/Versions/A/
as well as the symbolic links to it and to other folders.
    Solution:
The easiest way is to copy the whole AirPortConfig.framework to /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/
If you already have AirPortConfig.framework and AMU is not working, move it to the trash or somewhere else.
I found AirPortConfig.framework in the "AirPort Extreme Software Installation" CD (CD version 4.1 2Z691-5219-A):
    1. Open the CD
    2. Control-click "AirPort for Mac OX X v10.3" and select Show original
    3. Control-click "AirPortSW.pkg" and select Show Package Contents
    4. Open Contents
    5. Drag Archive.pax.gz to the Desktop
    6. Double-click Archive.pax.gz to unarchive the file
    7. AirPortConfig.framework is in ~/Desktop/Archive/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks
    8. Drag AirPortConfig.framework to /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ You will be asked to authenticate.
AMU should work at this point.
Alternatively, download "AirPort 4.1 Update.dmg" from
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airport41formacosx.html
and follow from step 3. above.
This solution seems to work on both Intel and PowerPC machines.
Computers tested: Power Mac G5, Powerbook G4 12" and 17", MacBook Pro.
IMPORTANT: I do not know if this solution breaks anything. CAVEAT EMPTOR!"

  • How can I boost ipad3's antenna signal reception?

My Wifi router name don't appear in wifi networks list when I'm in the bedroom, where as all other devises like laptop, Blackberry can see the wifi router signal very well. If I keep my ipad3 very near to the wifi router it works well.
The distance between wifi router and bedroom is not even 10 meters
How can I boost ipad's antenna signal reception to see my wifi router?
I already reset network settings and toggles airplane mode. Upgraded ios to the lastest version.

    There's no hardware solution.
    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

    Force Quit will not respond
When the freeze occurs the cursor will move, but not activate any application

  • How can I boost signal by extending a wireless network?

I have an Airport Express serving Wi-Fi and Airplay in my living room, and the signal is just strong enough that my devices will remain connected all the way in my back yard, which would be great for outdoor parties but the signal isn't strong enough to stream reliably. I thought I could resolve this problem by getting a second Airport Express to extend my wireless network and it would act as a repeater. However, it doesn't work when my devices (specifically an iPhone 4S) will not disconnect from the first Airport Express.
Is there another configuration I can use to get a more reliable Wi-Fi network in my back yard, one that doesn't require stringing an ethernet cable between the Airport Expresses? My base station is stuck in its location since that's where my cable modem and stereo are. Thanks!

Okay, after further experimentation, it appears the iPhone's Wi-Fi refuses to even recognize the existence of the extending unit. I walked out to the neighboring field, far enough away that the base station's signal cannot reach, but the extending unit still has line-of-sight. The MacBook has about -77 RSSI from the extending unit (verified BSSID is that of the extending unit with Airport Utility) and decent throughput - I was able to load a webpage rapidly - but the iPhone cannot find my network at all.
I also walked to the far end of the field with the iPhone, power cycled it, and performed Wi-Fi scans as I approached my house. It did not detect my network at all until it could connect to the base station, which I could verify in Airport Utility where it shows the iPhone connected to the base station unit and only the Macbook (still sitting under the extending unit) connected to the extending unit.
Anybody know how I can fix this so that I can apply the suggested workaround (power cycle the iPhone when outside of range of the base station but within range of the extending unit)?
Firmware checks verify all devices have the latest firmware. 7.6.1 for the older, extending Airport Express, 7.6.2 for the new hockey puck base station Airport Express, and 5.1.1 for the iPhone.

  • Airport extreme power supply buzzing sound

My airport extreme model A1301 power brick is making a buzzing sound and I think is dropping my internet. has anyone encounter this problem?  can i just get a new power supply cord or replace the whole thing?

A "buzzing" sound typically indicates a failed or faulty electrical component. Unfortunately, there is no user serviceable items on the AirPort's power brick. However, there are a number of vendors that offer replacements. If you bought your AirPort along with a Mac laptop or desktop, and have AppleCare, it may be possible to request a replacement from Apple.

  • How can I join Airport Express and 2Wire 3600HGV to extend wifi?

I to join an Airport Express to the wifi network from my AT&T 2Wire 3600HGV router to extend the wifi signal.  I know it is not SOP to link an AX to a non-Apple device like this.  I found instructions ( http://fsdeviations.blogspot.com/2012/09/howto-2wire-3600hgv-airport-extreme.htm l ) for joining an Airport Extreme to the 3600HGV.  Has anyone used this or a similar approach with the Express to join and extend wifi from the 3600HGV?

Connect an Ethernet cable from on of the LAN <--> ports on the back of the 2-Wire modem/router to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Express.
Power up the AirPort Express for a few minutes. The indicator light on the front of the device will be slowly blinking amber at this time.
    On your Mac......
Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Other WiFi Devices tab
    Click on AirPort Express
The setup utility will open up and take a minute to analyze the network, then suggest that the AirPort Express will create a new network....which is the correct setting.  The window will look similar to this illustration:
For Network Name......type in the exact name of the wireless network that the 2-Wire is providing......IF.....you want to "extend" the 2-Wire network and make one "big" network.  If you want to have the AirPort Express provide a different network, type in the name of the network that you want the AiPort Express to provide.
For Base Station Name....type in a device name that you want to call the AirPort Express
Password......If you want to extend the 2-Wire network, then type in the exact same password that the 2-Wire network is using.  If you want the AirPort Express to provide a different network, type in a password that you want to use with the network that the AirPort Express will provide
    Verify......verify the Password
Click Next, and the utility will set up everything for you automatically.
When you see the message of Setup Complete, click Done.  That's it. There should be a green light on the front of the AirPort Express at this point.  You can configure other AirPort Express devices in the same manner.

I recently uploaded 10.8, but I have a number of VALUABLE old files which I can no longer read because "power PC applications are no longer supported.  How can I retrieve them"?

Here is a post I assembled for another with a similar problem:
Unfortunately you got caught up in the minor miracle of Rosetta.  Originally licensed by Apple when it migrated from the PowerPC CPU platform that it had used from the mid-1990's until the Intel CPU platform in 2006, Rosetta allowed Mac users to continue to use their library of PPC software transparently in emulation.
However, Apple's license to continue to use this technology expired with new releases of OS X commencing with Lion (and now Mountain Lion).  While educational efforts have been made over the last 6 years, the fact is that Rosetta was SO successful that many users were caught unaware UNTIL they upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion.
    Workarounds:
    1. If your Mac will support it, restore OS X Snow Leopard;
    2.  If your Mac will support it, partition your hard drive or add an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard into it and use the "dual-boot" method to choose between your PPC software or Lion/Mt. Lion;
    3. Upgrade to an Intel compatible versions of your software, or find alternatives that will open your data files;
    3.  Install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels:
Full Snow Leopard installation instructions here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1365439
NOTE: STEP ONE of the instructions must currently be completed on a Snow Leopard or Lion Mac and the resulting modified Snow Leopard.cdr install file can then be moved over to your Mountain Lion Mac for completion of the remaining steps.
NOTE 2:  Computer games with complex, 3D or fast motion graphics make not work well or at all in virtualization.

  • Where can I get an additional power source for my MacBook Pro?

I am travelling to Europe next week and will be travelling on the road quite often. I would like to get some work done during that time. My laptop battery will inevitably run out of power during that time and I would like to carry an additional power source with me so I can get some extra juice when I am nowhere near an outlet.
I have the latest MacBook Pro where the battery is not removable.
Where can I get an additional power source for my MacBook Pro? I don't mind if it is a 3rd party product.

you could get something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Energizer-XP18000-Universal-External-Netbooks/dp/B002K8M9H C
it's about the same cost as an extra battery used to be. there's a range of similiar products at Amazon, i'd check reviews.

iphone in recovery mode,i'm restoring and updating to itunes but download cannot be completed...
my phone wont open, i can't even turn the power on.
    what to do? pls help
    (iphone 4  and  iphone 4s)

So I just did this on my iPhone 4 and it worked like a charm it unlocked it immediately. My phone was put into recovery mode and I know that not all data is deleted it just puts the phone into a sort of hibernation in order for the files to stay uncorrupted. I went to http://www.recovery-ipad.com/iphone-stuck-in-recovery-mode.html  downloaded the software it unlocked my phone in a matter of minutes. Calls, messages, photos, apps, and voicemail was all there as if it never happened  If you leave it unregistered you don't have to pay for it works for either windows or mac. Hope this helps!

  • I can not open Airport utility on my iMac after updating to maverick 10.90.4

I can not open Airport utility on my iMac after updating to maverick 10.9.4 . Error Message:[You can’t use this version of the application “AirPort Utility.app” with this version of OS X. You have "Airport Utility.app"5.4.2] It also will not allow me to install "airport Utility 6.3. Does anybody has a fix for this?

Re-run Software Update and see if there is a newer version of Airport Utility. I suspect your router or iMac may be too old to use Airport Utility 6.3 . As a work- around if Software Update does not work then try reading this article and see if the suggested solution help you.

  • How can I use Airport Extreme just as a file server - no wifi

I'm setting up a new Apple environment for an invalid music buff.  Here are the components, all newly purchased.
    MacBook Pro
    Airport Extreme
    Airport Express
I was handed a G-Drive with a large iTunes file collection on it.
The user will have Comcast as his network provider and he already has a Comcast wireless router, so none of the Apple devices will need to be used as a wireless router or base station (assuming I understand what Apple means by a "base station").
The Airport Express has the primary function of acting as an AirPlay device, feeding an analog music signal to the user's hi-end audio system (Denon integrated amplifier, Thiel Loudspeakers).
The Airport Extreme has the sole function of acting as a network file share for the G-Drive.
The MacBook Pro will operate iTunes and will get its music files from the network shared G-Drive and send it to the AirPlay device, which will feed the music signal to the hi-end audio system.
I am able to get the Airport Express to simply act as a wireless client on the Comcast provided wireless network.  The MacBook Pro is also on the network and can see the Airport Express as an AirPlay device and send music to the audio system.
What I'm having problems with is getting the Airport Extreme to simply act as a file server on this LAN.  It can either work in bridged mode and just be a wireless network client, or I can readily run an ethernet cable from the Airport Extreme to the Airport Express, or even to the Comcast router.
I tried to connect the MacBook Pro to the Airport Extreme with an ethernet cable and get it to "join an existing network", but it refused to recognize the Comcast provided network.  All it could see were some networks in homes nearby.
I was hoping that if I just ran a network cable between the Airport Extreme and the Airport Express, that it would just get a network address over DHCP through the Airport Express.  Nope.
So I'm stuck.   How do I get the Airport Express to simply act as a file server for the G-Drive on my LAN?

+Can I use the Airport Extreme base station as a wired router, with wireless disabled for the time being?+
Sure, but it will probably take just as much time...a few minutes....to turn the wireless off than simply change the name on the default wireless network to your personal choice.
The AirPort Extreme is pre-configured to create a wireless network when it is hooked up to a modem. All you need do is assign a name to this network and establish a password. If you don't want to do this, you can turn the wireless off and use the device as a wired only router.
AirPort Utility, the application that is used to setup the AirPort Extreme has a simple guided step by step process for you to configure the device the way you want.
