Can I boost the wireless signal?

Our wireles signal on our PowerBook g4 is always much lower than other devices in the same room.  Does anyone know if there is a way to boost the wireless signal?
Thanks,
Jenny

Hi Jenny,
Normally you can only adjust the signal strength of the broadcasting unit (router), not the receiver (computer). The PowerBook antenna is in the screen frame--about all you can do is rotate the computer to see if it can better pick up the signal.
If the wireless icon shows fewer bars but everything still works, I would not be too concerned. When we upgraded our cable service, the ISP gave us a modem that includes wireless and I noticed our geriatric PowerBook G4 1Ghz showing fewer bars than with the older wireless router we used. However, once it connects, it runs as fast as before.
Remember that no PowerBook G4 has wireless faster than "g" where newer devices may have the faster 'N' protocol. If you are finding the old PBG4 slower than the newer devices, that's a hardware limitation, not signal strength.
If you have more specific issues, please by all means post them and we can see if there is something else afoot.

Can I boost the DSL signal using my 1st Generation Airport Extreme or Express?
I just moved into a house where they have ATT DSL and it is really slow in my room.  I am hoping that I don't have to purchase a booster and I might be able to use my Airport Extreme or Express to boost it.  I don't think they want my Extreme as their router, though.  They are PC.
I am also hoping that I can set up a wireless printing situation in my room using the Express or Extreme.
I am running 10.4.11 on my old MacBook Pro laptop, 10.5.something on my old desktop (MacMini).
Thanks for any help ahead of time,

Unfortunately, this won't work especially if you want the connection between the routers to be wireless. The two are just not compatible for configuring an extended network. However, it could work if you can have them interconnected by wire. In that case, you could configure them into a roaming network.

This shouldn't be an issue as the AirPorts support wireless clients regardless of which operating system they are running.

  • Boosting the wireless signal

    Hello,
Can anyone tell me if I can use the LINKSYS by Cisco Wireless-G Range Expander Model No. WRE54G on my M1424WR Verizon Router to boost the wireless signal in my laptop. I do have wireless signal, however since the router is not very close to the spot in which I usually use my laptop the signal sometime gets weak. For this reason I searched the web and came up with this device for signal boosting, my question is if this device will work with my Verizon router or make it worst.
    Thank you.

OK, I am sorry that I did not get back to you sooner.
I have tried every idea you suggested, but not to my satisfaction. I called Verizon and they changed the channel to channel 11 and it not help. I bought the devices you recommended but neither one of them were good. I then bumped in to an AMPED HIGH POWER WIRELESS-300N SMART REPEATER. I just got it this afternoon, and I just finished to set it up, and guess what, it is working great.
I figured I should share this with all of you, and I thank everyone that put his input.

  • Can I disable the wireless signal?

I'm using a wireless router (e2000) as a wired router. I don't currently have a use for the wireless feature, so can I turn that off somehow?

    Wizzard wrote:
Under the Wireless tab, select manual and disable the option "SSID Broadcast" and click on save settings.
That won't disable the wireless signal. It will only disable the SSID broadcast. The wireless is still accessible. It will still cause transmissions. The network is still accessible. The presence of the wireless router is still easily detected.
Only setting the network mode to "disabled" will disable the wireless radio in the router, i.e. powering it off.

    Hello Sashalechat,
    Welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you are having an issue when attempting to connect to a wireless network.
Have you changed the router for a new one?
Make sure that you have the printer power cable connected directly to a wall outlet and not a power bar/strip. Here is a document that uses a LaserJet printer as an example but it is meant for HP products in general. Please click on the following link that explains the Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector.
Make sure that you are with in the 4'-20' range.
You can try the HP Print and Scan Doctor as well.  Let me know if you see any error codes or messages.
Write me back when you have time.

I have a Netgear WNR2000 router and an Edimax EW-7438RPn wifi range extender.  I have gotten the range extender to work well with my MacBook Air, however, while my iPhone 3Gs and iPad mini can pick up the wireless signal from the range extender, they cannot get to the Internet through it.  No IP Address, Subnet Mask, Router, or DNS appear in the details on either the iPhone or the iPad mini.   How do I get the iPhone and the iPad to connect to the Internet.   It seems that the problem is with the iPhone and iPad, since the MacBook Air works just fine with this set up.

    Junglemania,
Go into the setup page of the EW-7438RPn.  Go to Wireless Advanced Settings.  There is a WMM settings.  Make sure the WMM is enabled.
    This may help you out.

  • I have a net gear wireless router and a APE working great inside the house, but the wireless signal is weak in the backyard, can I get a net gear extender for the back and it will also send my music to the airport express?

Trust me when I say this coming from 20 years of experience.
Get a powered external drive, format it 1 Partition Option: GUID and OS X Extended Journed as the format in Disk Utility.
Download and install Carbon Copy Cloner, clone internal drive to external drive.
Set a schedule to remind you to do it at least once a week, keep it near your charger.
When you plug your charger in, do plug the clone and power the machine up, set the display to sleep only,
    CCC will do the rest.
If you want to boot from it, hold the option/alt and select it Startup Manager.
I've seen many TimeMachine and TimeCapsule nightmares and so far haven't seen a problem from anyone using a bootable clone.
It's simple, it's easy, it's more reliable and more powerful than what Apple does and it only takes plugging in a extra cable.
Make as many clones as you want, keep them time seperated, off site etc. etc.
Cables don't have network issues, clones can be verified in seconds merely by booting from them.
Clones protect your productivity, your up in seconds on a clone despite even the hard drive dying.
Software problem? No sweat, boot of the clone and reverse clone your problems away.
If you want to fuss and muss with half implemented TimeMachine and TimeCapsule network headaches then prepare to suffer.
I don't like to suffer, I bought a Mac not to suffer, but it appears you do with TimeMachine and TimeCapsule.

I am staying long term at a hotel. Is there a way I can boost the wifi signal?

I think you may have better luck working with the hotel management and have them contact their wireless service provider to see if they can improve the signal in your room.
The only other option might be an external Wi-Fi antenna for your iPad ... but I'm not aware of anyone providing these at this point in time. Sorry!

I just got my cable company to switch my wireless router to a wired one considering now I have the wireless airport device (the newest one) but now I can't get a wireless signal. The router works when directlyplugged in,the aiport wireless device is green. I've tried going through my new MacBook Pro settings and it the diagnostics check, it says network changes detected, I tell it that it "yes" does connect to a cable modem, it tells me to restart it, after I do it asks if there are any other devices hooked up ( firewall) and when I say no it tells me that it can't fix the problem.
Now I know that I probably have a new IP address because of the cable company switching the boxes but it was working fine with the other box, now there isn't a signal to be had on it!
Please anybody out there that can help!!!??

Any time you change networking hardware it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle with the new equipment. Check out the following AirPort User Tip. Please post back your results.

Can time capsule boost the wireless network without beeing connected with cabel, hence wirelessly?

Yes, providing that the wireless network has been created by another Apple "n" router.
The "extend a wireless network" feature on the Time Capsule is not compatible with devices from other manufacturers.

  • Is there a device to use to boost the verizon signal so that I can get more than1 bar on my JetPack?

Is there a device to use to boost the verizon signal so that I can get more than 1 bar on my JetPack in rural Tenn?

Beyondrural, I understand that you need reliable coverage. We sell network extenders http://bit.ly/AKkC for home use, but this wouldn't be feasible for a network extender as you would need cable, DSL, or FiOS internet. Are you having problems only inside your house or the whole area? If inside your home, you may also want to consider HomeFusion http://bit.ly/SEW00I as it includes a cantenna that sits on the outside of your house. What city and state is this?

P.S i;ve heard a comment about the G5 case not being
great for wireless so the cards come with a plastic
antena that connects to the back of the machine - i
never recieved one of these - could that be the
    problem?
Newer G5 PowerMacs don't require the external t-shaped aerial, earlier models do and that is probably the cause of the problem.

  • Can people interfere with the wireless signal?

This is strange and I can't figure it out.  My Linksys WRT54GSv5 router works fine with my notebook accessing the internet. When certain friends of mine come over, the wireless internet quits working the minute they enter my kitchen, that's where my notebook computer is.  I'm connected to the wireless network, but no web pages will load.  When they leave, everything works again without rebooting or anything.  Is there an explanation for this?

This has happened 4 times in a row when they came over.  Yesterday, while they were walking up to my house, I tried to load a web page on my notebook and it worked fine.  The minute they entered the kitchen, I tried a web page again and it would not load.  I wonder if there is a device that may interfere with the wireless signal that they have with them.  There was no microwave in use.  As far as I know, my friends are not robots.  But maybe they are aliens from another planet.  Seriously, I can't figure out why this is happening.

I have a Linksys WRV200 wireless router and the wireless signal is not working properly so I am unable to connect to the internet wirelessly.  The wireless light is blinking green very quickly and I connect and disconnect from the network constantly.  How do I get the router to work properly

    Hello James,
The flashing WLAN light means activity (data getting transferred). Try disconnecting all your devices and check whether the light is still flashing or disconnect the router from internet and do the check.
Do you have your SSID as linksys or the default one? If your neighbor has the same SSID, then traffic could result from your neighbor's one. Try changing your SSID and password. Make your security WPA/WPA2.
    Hope this helps,
    Thanks
    Vijay
