Can I boot a T60p from a T61p disk

I have a T61p running Windows XP. I need to replace the hardware and am thinking of "downsizing" to T60p. Can I just move my T61p hard disk and put it in the T60p ? Will the T60p boot ? I am trying to safe myself time in having to reinstall and reconfigure all the applications . Tx.

it won't work straight away, you would need to restore the hdd from the factory image, then reload some of the drivers from the web, as these two machines have lot of different hardwares.

Can't boot G5 even from OS install disk. Help?

I've trolled the message boards 25 pages deep and searched all the "Can't boot my G5" threads and still haven't found anyone describing what my machine is doing so thought I'd start a new thread in the hopes someone can help me out.
Ok I have a G5 dual processor machine. (Power PC chip, not Intel) Things went bad when I tried to do an Archive and Install of Leopard (OS 10.5) The install looked as normal until I got to one minute left on the install. At that point the install never progressed. I thought maybe it was doing some behind the scenes processing and decided to leave it over night. The next day my machine was still hung on that One minute left. So obviously it was a failure. Of course now the problem is I have an install that never completed of the OS and so that partition is, I assume, unbootable. Wiped away the Tiger OS and did a 99% install of Leopard. So I had to shut down by holding the power button.
I think to myself, "No worries I can just boot from my 2nd partition holding down the Option key to select it on the boot up screen". I always keep a partition with an OS on it for times like these. So I reboot, hold option key, select my other partition, things look OK. I get the grey screen with the Apple logo and I get the wheel animation turning. (Not beachball of death but the typical circular, almost sun ray configuration thing) At this point, usually the screen will go black for a moment before the desktop loads. However, in my case once the screen goes black after the load screen, it stays black. Now let me say the monitor does NOT turn off. There is a definite difference when I manually turn the monitor off. When off it's truly black. But this is like a power on black, not true black. (If you need me to explain this better feel free to ask me to clarify)
So the untouched, pristine Tiger partition boot is a No Go. I figured I'd then give up on trying to put Leopard on my desktop machine (I use it on my laptop) and reinstall the original OS and system software from the system disk that came with my G5. I boot machine holding down eject button, place the disk in, close the drive door and shut down again by holding power button. Reboot holding C key and the same routine happens with booting from the disk. Gray Apple logo screen, sun ray circle moving, screen goes black on the attempted transition to desktop .. but stays black. I also tried booting with my Disk Warrior disk to no avail. Same thing happens. (Also tried booting from disks by selecting them manually from booting with Option key down) At first I wondered if it was a monitor issue. That maybe my desktop was up but there was an issue with the signal being passed to the monitor on the resolution jump. Thought perhaps hitting the Eject key on the keyboard when I had attempted to boot from the partition (not from disk on this test) would tell me if it was a monitor issue. If it was a monitor issue, the disk tray should open. But alas, no.
So since I cannot boot normally from any partition or disk I decided to boot into single-user mode.
I did the fsck -fy thing and it told me everything was ok. I had also previously installed applejack and I ran that and short of correcting a few permissions and dumping some unneeded caches it came back with a system OK.
At my wits end I booted into target disk mode and ran Disk Warrior on both the original half installed OS partition and the back up emergency boot up partition from my laptop. Again, everything OK. Hoped against hope that I could actually install an OS onto my G5 from my laptop but I was only given the option of being able to do it from my laptop with the Leopard disk and it would only allow me to do it if I used Disk Utility to completely format that drive first. No, thanks.
Re-attempt to boot G5. Failure. So now I turn to hardware. Disconnected everything beside the keyboard and mouse. Try again. Fail. Pulled a couple sticks of Crucial memory out of the machine and left the stock RAM. No dice. Pressed the small power unit reset button under the RAM slots. No change. Zapped the PRAM. Still nothing. Try to boot in Safe mode holding down shift key. Doesn't work.
It seems to me if I can't even get the machine to boot from the Install disk that there is something going on that is much more major than software issues.
Bad motherboard? Any ideas? Because I'm all out of ideas.

Brother, Sound74, I thought I was the only one pulling the hair out of my chest one by one the past two days. Your situation is very similar to mine, and I'm just as clueless as you are. I started getting kernel panic screens, then nothing on boot, until finally I brought it to the local genius bar. They ran all the usual software/hardware tests, updated Tiger to 10.4.11, recommended I buy Leopard and do an erase-install. My computer, of course, was working absolutely fine by this point. I bought Leopard, came home, backed everything up, then tried to install the new OS. Like in your case, it just up and quit half-way through. Screen went black and a "No DVI Signal" message came on my display (it does this when I turn it on without first turning on the computer).
So I thought, well, maybe it takes a really long time to erase-install, and the monitor is just waiting for things to kick back in. I've always upgrade-installed before, so I couldn't tell if this was normal or not. But about half an hour later, my fans kicked in so fast I thought I had a P-51 Mustang taking off in my studio. I waited a bit more and finally force-shut-down my system. Not knowing what to expect, I nervously tried to re-boot.
Nothing. Zip. I can't safe boot, I can't boot from the installer disc, etc. The only thing I can do is the option-key thing whereby you choose the startup disc. And of course, it only gives the Leopard install disc as an option, because now the entire HD has been erased! But when I choose the Leopard disc, of course it doesn't work.
So I have a nice $3000 paperweight sitting in my studio. I guess I'll have to bring it back to the Mac store, where if it costs more than $300 to fix, I'm going to say screw it and put that dough toward a new iMac.
Sorry I couldn't provide any helpful info, but I just wanted you to know you're not alone in suffering the slings and arrows of outrageous technology.
Keep me posted on any solutions you discover, and I'll do the same.

Can't boot to any OS X Install Disk

I have a strange problem and this is going to be long. I just added a 2007 MacPro to our Apple family and am having an issue that I can not get past. First, I bought it used and the gentleman that sold it to me described what he did to prep it for me. He wanted to make sure that his data was completely gone so he performed a secure erase on all three HD. One 150GB WD Raptor 10000 and two 700 GB Segates 7500. I should mention here that this system has two DVD drives, one an Apple Super Drive, the other an LG BlueRay read write DVD. Once he did the erase, he said he was not able to reinstall because he kept getting a "can not install a lesser OS" type message. So he removed the WD Raptor and cloned it externally then replaced it.
Initially I was getting the ?folder icon on boot for a few seconds then it would seem to find the HD and boot up fine. However, any attempt to boot to any OS X install DVD results in the gray panic screen to reboot. I have the original disks to this system, which are OS X Tiger and I have a retail OS X 10.5 Leopard and neither will boot to do a fresh install.
I have done a PRAM reset and that has gotten rid of the ?folder screen. I have also booted to a Super Duper Boot Backup and performed a restore to the WD Hard Drive, repaired permissions and it boots great! Even reformated the two larger drives with disk utility and all runs extremely well. One other note... I have even been able to run Boot Camp, set up a partition on one of the large Hard Drives and successfully install Windows 7 64 bit Beta. So it does read DVDs.
But, I can not boot of any OS X install disk???? Below is a copy paste of the problem report that is generated after each failed attempt.

That Tell's me 100% you do have the same card the

that needs OS X 10.5.2 or newer to boot from the install DVD. I went though this man, by myself is was not fun call 800-69-2773 (800-MY-Apple) ask for costumer care tell them it is the Old OS & newer GPU not the Mac Pro, So they can't try to say you need Apple Care for what in truth they never told people. I know you will get a replacement Mac OS X Leopard Install DVD 10.5.2 or newer it is white & has Replacement DVD Not For Resale on it.

10.6.6 update - can't boot, installation OS from DVD fails

hi all,
I have updated to 10.6.6 yesterday and since then I can't boot my MBPro. It freezes at the initial grey screen with Apple logo and "loading" wheel spinning (initially an installation progress bar appears, but vanishes after a while).
I tried reinstalling Snow Leopard from DVD, but it fails "The content of this disk can't be changed. Mac OS X couldn't be installed on this disk." I tried verifying / repairing the hard drive using the Disk Utility, but here I also get an error: "Disk utility can't repair this disk..disk, and restore you backed-up files".
I ran the Disk Utility verification of my HD about a week ago, all worked OK then.
Any ideas how I can get to my hard drive?

Can't boot elitebook 8560p from cd

My laptop came with a 160 gigabyte solid state drive and I ran out of disk space so I bought a 256 gigabyte ssd drive. I want to transfer all my software to the new drive. I bought a data transfer kit that comes with a bootable CD. I went to the bios to change the boot order so it would boot from the CD and there was a section that allowed one to rearrange the legacy boot order and it listed a usb CD. It did not just list CD. I choose usb cd to boot from first and it booted from the hard drive. That makes me think that the internal CD is not listed and can't be booted from. Is that true? How can I boot from an external device?

The only other advice I can offer is for you to do a hard reset of the notebook and see if that fixes the issue.

If that doesn't work and your notebook is still under warranty, I highly recommend you contact HP technical support and file a support case with them.

Can't boot Portege M200 from SD-card

Hi there,
I recently purchased a used Portege M200 and I'm having trouble installing an operating system.
The situation: I got the notebook with a basic trial version of win XP home which I couldn't use. It wouldn't boot from the external usb dvd drive which I bought so I installed a linux system by switching hd with a friend's laptop and installing it via this machine (this method doesn't work with windows though).
After reading many articles by people who encountered the same problem I decided to go and try to boot from an sd card, which would offer various possibilities to install windows.
I tried many things but yet couldnt boot from sd.
I use a 2GB Panasonic class4 SD card.
- The toshiba sd-utilities (afaik) only work on toshiba windows machines, so they're no use to me
- People said that placing an image of a boot floppy on the SD, naming it $tosfd000.vfd or $tosfd00.vfd (tried both) would do the trick, but no.
- When switching the boot order to FDD->HDD->... or using the third option in the toshiba boot screen the green led next to the card reader will flash once, but afterwards directly boot the linux from HDD.
Specifications: Toshiba Portege M200, 2ghz, the bios is ACPI v.3.01 (which is a little confusing since the most recent version i found for the portege is 1.8)
could it be that someone messed up the bios by installig a version that is not compatible with my laptop?
any help much appreciated!

I wouldn't worry about it saying acpi 3.01 - thats likely just the version of acpi the bios supports.
I have also had trouble booting off sd cards via the $TOSFD00.VFD method. My personal experience is that it does work but only seems to for certain images. At least one of the available m200 vfd images doesn't work for me (tho can't remember which one). You could try creating your own or alternatively look into booting via pxe. One way is to boot via pxe and use the original toshiba windows xp ghost install images from the included cd (if you have it.) Can't boot snow leopard from external drive

I have a copy of snow leopard installed on a separate usb hard drive which I use to run some PowerPC programmes under rosetta. I can attach this USB drive to my Mac Pro and also to an Intel Macbook and choose to start up on this external drive without any issues. However when I try restarting my new 2011 iMac on this external usb drive the machine crashes every time with a kernal panic. Is this problem unique to me or does everyone else have this issue with new iMacs. Mine is a 27" 3.4ghz i& with 12ghb ram installed running 10.72. Is their soemthing I can do to resolve this problem?

I have now solved the problem of being able to boot from either Snow Leopard or Lion on a new Mid 2011 iMac. This is how I did it.
1. Attach an external USB drive to an earlier Mac or borrow one from a friend. In my case I used my 2009 Unibody Macbook (which has Lion installed on it but does allow you to install Snow Leopard on an attached device) Put the Snow Leopard install disc in this machine and tell it to install Snow Leopard on your attached USB Drive.
2. Start up the Macbook (or whatever machine you are using) and get it to restart on the attached USB drive so that it boots up in Snow Leopard. Then when Snow Leopard is up and running on the attached external drive, do a software update to bring it up to 10.68 (the current version). This step is important as I found that if I plugged in the external USB drive into the iMac with only operating system 10.6 installed it would cause a kernal panic on start up when I choose to start up on the external USB drive.
3. With Snow Leopard updated to system 10.68 you can now plug it into your iMac and restart the iMac booting into Snow Leopard from the external USB drive. You do this by either going to System Preferences>Startup disk and choosing the external drive, or by holding down the option key when you restart your Mac and choosing the external USB drive.
4. The next step is to make your iMac dual boot now that you know it can run Snow Leopard successfully from an external USB drive. To do this, go into Utilities>Disk Utility and select your main drive. Select the main disk (with Lion on it) and then choose Partition and choose 2 Partitions. Drag the first partition bundary line down to make the second partition size as small as possible. In my case I had a stock 1TB drive and the smallest partition size it would allow me was 70gb. Create the second partition (assuming you have spare space on your drive to allow this to happen). This will then create a second hard drive icon on your desktop. I renamed mine "Snow Leopard startup".
5. Download the free (and excellent) utility Carbon Copy Cloner and use it to copy your Snow Leopard operating sytem from your attached USB external drive to your new partition.
6. That's it! Now you can choose to start up your iMac from either Lion or Snow Leopard using either method mentioned in 3 above.
7. As a final step I suggest your install your Rosetta only programmes in your new Snow Leopard partition so that you can access them easily and keep them all together.

Can't boot Snow Leopard from USB drive made in Yosemite

Hi all,
I have a brand new macbook pro running Yosemite, but some of the software I have will only run in Snow Leopard.
Running Snow Leopard as a Virtual Machine has been clunky, so I wanted to try an alternative and install Snow Leopard onto an external HD and work from that.
I got hold of the Snow Leopard dmg file and created a bootable USB thumb drive (I did this within Yosemite) to try to install it onto the external HD. I used the instructions here:

But when I restart the computer and try and boot from the USB drive, I just get the grey background with dark grey apple symbol, indefinitely. The installation process never commences.
What am I not doing right?

You can only do what you are trying from a model that can be booted into Snow Leopard. You have a 2014 model that can only be booted by Mavericks or Yosemite. You cannot run Snow Leopard on your machine except in a VM or a Mac from 2010 or earlier.

Can't boot in safe mode - RAID startup disk

hi ..
my macpro has a mirrored RAID as a startup disk (using HD bay 1 & 2) ... i am trying to boot into safe mode but this does not work at all, even when holding down the shift key it starts up in normal user mode.
Is there a way to do this ? is it maybe possible to boot into safe mode with a terminal command ? or any other way ?

This topic is quite old, but I face exactly the same issue.
My MacPro tries to boot in safe mode, but restarts and boots in normal mode afterwards.
There are messages in system.log that indicate to me that the kernel exensions on the boot helper volumes are different from the ones on the main partition:

I tried:
sudo kextcache -v 6 -f -u /
Which updates the kernel extensions on the boot helper volume,
but it does not work.
As for the firware updates, I could still install those booting from external FW disk.

Can FCE 4 import directly from Panasonic Hard Disk Drive camcorder

I have FCE 3.5, and to import from my Panasonic SDR-H18 hard disk drive camcorder I need to convert from MPEG-4 to DV using MPEG Streamclip.
Can I import video directly from my Panasonic via a USB port to FCE 4, reading MPEG-4 without converting to DV.

FCE can only capture via FireWire.
FCE 4 will only capture DV and AVCHD. It won't capture the MPEG formats used by standard definition HDD and DVD cameras.

My iMac can't boot Windows 7 From USB while my Macbook Pro can do it

I install Windows 7 64 bit and rEFIt into a USB hard disk and hope to boot from my iMac 27" (2010 Mid). However, it shows that no boot deivce is found.
If I plug the SAME disk to my Macbook Pro 17" (2009 Mid), it can boot Windows 7 without any problem.
I tried with Linux and get same result, iMac says no boot device while my Macbook Pro can boot it without problem.
I tried experiment for weeks and still can't get iMac work.
I think it is very abnormal and I wonder if someone can tell me how to fix it or any directory to solve this problem.

My iMac runs snow leopard and my MacBook pro runs Lion. Both of them are updated with latest updated. I just get one external USB hard disk with Windows 7 32 bit installed and magically, my iMac can boot it from rEFIt. However, I don't know what makes it works. I tried to make same configuration, software and steps on other USB hard disks for hundreds times but I can repeat it again. All other attempt can make USB hard disk boot on MacBook Pro but not iMac only.

Hello Guys.
I have a very wiered problem with my 15 Macbook Pro early 2011 (thunderbolt), latest version of mountain lion (10.8.4?).
The computer does boot but won't show up the login screen. I've tried to boot in recovery mode, but as soon as recovery boots up it only shows a blank blue screen. The same for booting from an install USB drive or a external HDD.
What I've also tried:
- NVPRAM reset
- chdsk in Singleuser mode
Nothing helped so far.
I know this was asked before (on a different forum though) but seems like they couldn't figure out a solution.
Is there anyone who can help with that?

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional — ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Can I Boot my PB from a Firewire 800 External HD?

I'm a going to buy a portable external HD for my mirror (clone) back-up drive.
I can buy either a Firewire 400 ("Combo case") or 800 ("Triple case") HD. My inclination is to buy the Firewire 800 ("Triple case") drive as it will be more useful in the future.
Will I be able to Boot my Firewire 400 PB from the Firewire 800 External HD as long as I have the right adapter cable? Or do I have to get a Firewire 400 instead?
The drives I have in mind come from OWC and have a port for an external power supply if it's needed.*

Can I boot 10.5 from an external hard drive?

Hi Folks,
I thought I was able to create a bootable external firewire hard drive containing Mac OS X 10.5 but having no luck. I would like to be able to test some legacy software on it and cannot get it to even boot. I have an 80 GB external drive with 2 partitions (8GB and the rest storage); GUID partition. The 8GB portion has the 10.5 installer I created from an install DVD.
I followed all the instructions but it doesn't seem to work from my Yosemite MacBook Pro 10.10.2 (2.5 intel core i5). Is it not possible because of Yosemite already being installed and it doesn't like I am trying to boot an early version of Mac OS X? Thanks for the help!

I have already used the (internal) hard drive to boot my computer. If it is bootable while outside the computer, that is only the (internal) hard drive being outside the computer running while the computer is on then I will buy an external herd drive enclosure so that it can do so.

That is exactly correct. We do not do that.
It is not necessary to get inside your computer to connect a hard drive. You can connect a second (or third, or even more) drive externally. And if the drive is correctly formatted, you can boot from it. An external hard drive enclosure costs less than < $10. You install the drive in the enclosure, and you can connect it externally to a usb port on the computer.
A typical enclosure for a SATA laptop drive looks like this:

In summary then, keep one drive inside the computer. Always. Use any other drives you need as externals. If you have many external usb devices, plug them into a powered hub. This way nothing needs to be regularly connected and disconnected.
