Can I boot off the SATA HDD

I just put my computer together, and I am trying to install Windows XP pro.  I only have a SATA HDD and would like for the computer to put the master boot record on this drive.  As of now,  every time I try to install XP it tells me that it cannot locate a hard drive.  I assume that it is expecting an IDE HDD.  Is there any way that I can use the SATA HDD to boot up my computer, or will I have to just buy an IDE HDD.

Yes, you can boot off the SATA drive.  You will, however, have to 1st enable the SATA capability in the BIOS.  Upon startup, get into the BIOS (usually press "F6" on startup), then step through the BIOS screens and you will see a place where you enable various IDE drives.   You need to enable the SATA functionality.  Instructions (albeit vague) will also be in your MB owners manual.
Good luck.
Scott
PS  After you've formatted the SATA Drive & installed Win XP, you will need to again enter the BIOS and setup the BIOS to boot form the SATA drive.  Right now, you are correctly booting off the CD to install Win-XP.

  • How Come windows 7 can't boot off the second hard drive on MBP?

i have 2 ssd in my macbook pro. but the second drive (located in the superdrive slot) will not allow windows to boot while the first HDD is in.  When i remove the first HDD, the 2nd hdd boots. this doesnt make and sense as the second bay is still a sata bootable bay as it was the old superdrive slot.  i had switched the hdds too and was able to boot to mac when it was in the second bay.

Starting up from a system version older than the original one is not supported and usually not possible.

  • Can't boot off the Install Disk, loud fan noises, "No" symbol

I recently attempted to verify my internal hard drive status with Disk Utility, and got the following response back:
"Disk Utility stopped verifying “Macintosh HD” because the following error was encountered:
The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair"
I tried to boot off the Tiger Install Disk in the hopes of repairing my internal hard drive, but after a minute of the Apple logo and spinny icon at startup, the logo is replaced with a gray "no" symbol. I then had to turn off and on the iMac while holding down Option to reselect my internal hard drive as the startup disk. While this is happening, my iMac's fan is going crazy. It calms down once I get the original startup disk selected.
I have already tried resetting the SMU and PRAM, with no luck. I am also booting off of my roommate's Tiger OS X Install Disk, not my own (I am a college student, and I believe I left my copy of Tiger at home). So far, I am having no trouble using my iMac, as long as it is running off the internal hard drive, but I don't like the ominous "Volume needs repair" message Disk Utility gave me. Any suggestions?

If you can boot from an external drive, use Disk Utility from the external disk to repair your computer, you can't do it from the same drive you have booted from. Perhaps the friend who lent you the Tiger disk will let you use his computer and connect to yours in Target Disk Mode.

  • Can't boot Arch from external HDD

Hi, well first off this is not my first Arch Linux installation, I'm using Arch for a little over a year now (coming from slack). But this is my first attempt to have Arch on an external HDD.
Alrighty, the situation is as follows: A rather new computer (supports booting from USB devices and the bios is set to boot from removable devices first) with a built in HDD and an external HDD that's connected to that computer via USB.
What I did: I connected the external HDD to the computer and booted off a 2008.6 Overlord core-CD.
Arch-Live recognized the internal HDD as sda and the external HDD as sdb.
I partitioned the external HDD using cfdisk and ran mkfs.ext3 on it (I didn't use any switches with that).
I started the installer, set my mount points (I should mention I'm not gonna use a swap partition here), installed the packages, well just went through the installation routine and installed grub in the MBR of sdb (the external HDD).
Then I rebooted. And this is what doesn't work: When I boot that computer with the external HDD connected the computer completely hangs right before grub would come up. It freezes completely, ctrl+alt+del doesn't work, I need to use the powerswitch to reboot the computer.
So I put the Arch-CD back in the CD drive trying to boot into my Arch System on the external HDD. So I started typing:
    root (hd1,0)
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sdb1 ro vga=773
    initrd /boot/kernel26.img
When I try to boot off that grub tells me that there is no such device as hd1,0. The funny thing is, that the auto copmletion in grub works for the kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 but it doesn't for the device /dev/sdb1, in fact even root=/de<tab> returns a "unrecognized string" message.
So this is what I did and I can't boot off my external HDD, neither can I boot into my system on the external hdd from the cdrom.
    What am I missing here?

The harddrive you boot from is in my experience always hd0. Could this mean your external disc is hd2?
Have you tried chainloading from the installer cd to your external disc?

  • Can I boot from a SATA drive? What if it's RAID?

I'm planning on getting the MSI 875P Neo FIS2R 800FSB motherboard. I'm also planning on getting ONE SATA hard drive. Can I boot from the SATA drive? Do I HAVE to set up it as a RAID drive? Can you boot from RAID drives? RAID and SATA confuse me a little. Anyone care to help?

I'm using the MSI 865PE Neo2 board and I'm having this problem.  It probably has an easy solution, but this is my first build, so I'm not sure exactly what to do.
    MSI 865PE Neo 2 Mobo
    2.4b P4
    Seagate SATA 80GB HDD
    Panasonic FDD
    Lite-On DVDROM
It took me a little bit of experimenting, but I got the BIOS to recogonize the DVD & HDD.  It seems every time I got it to recognize one, the other disappeared.  Anyway, like I said, BIOS recognizes all 3 now.
I go to install XP and it says I need to install the drivers from a floppy (after I had previously hit F6).  Well, where do I get the drivers?  I have a CDROM that came with the mobo but I don't know where to find the drivers for the SATA controller on it.  ???
Can someone help me by directing me to a download and/or the file names that I need to transfer to floppy for Win XP installation?  I would appreciate it.  Thanks.

  • How do I install Yosemite on a 2nd HDD I have added and have the Mac Pro boot from the new HDD?

My MacPro's HD seems to be failing. None of the tests I run indicate that, but I get constant spinning balls and everything takes a long time. I bought a 2nd HDD and installed it in the 2nd bayou my Early 2009 Mac Pro. I formatted it and want to install Yosemite and have the Mac boot off the new drive. It is currently running OS X 10.9.5. When I go to update to Yosemite it begins to download. Will it give me the option of which drive to install on? Or will it just upgrade the original Mac's HD?

    A Samsung 850 EVO 128GB SSD $75 now and makes a huge improvement. But get the 250GB which is $99. 500GB $199
Wish you asked us first   Awesome prices and performance.
Output from Etrecheck is an easy "quick check" of what your system is carrying around and what baggage it has.
Move data to a 'data and media library" drive.
Use CCC to skip the user data folders except ~/Library and clone to SSD
And might want to save the installer .ESD package for use as clean installer and to be able to boot from.

  • So I have an iPad 2 for two years. Has never been dropped or in water or damaged in any way....now the volume is distorted and I get booted off the web all the time. Plus it shows and no service in top left corner. Any one have these issues?

So I got is iPad as a gift and the same issues I had with my iPhone 4S is also happening with my iPad. Will Apple cover the problem as it lies within there updates or something. All I know I have taken perfect care of both products and volume is distorted. Can't listen to music, I get booted off the web all the time, I can't even chat with Apple icare it won't work and no service shows on top left corner. What is wrong with Apple products? I'm thinking it's time to switch! I've had to change my iPhone twice now......first time for mic not working and then camera shutter kept sticking. Same on my iPad........ I don't want to pay to get this fixed as it's not my fault this is happening...... It's software apparently?

This really is starting to feel like a hardware issue than a software one.
Especially if hearing noises when you connecting up your iPad for charging.
Something happened to your iPad that has nothing to do with a software update.
This is why I recommend that
I can't help you any farther.
It sounds as if you really need to take this iPad in for a repair.
Since you are reluctant to do this, there is nothing more I can suggest to you.
Good Luck on whatever you decide to do.

  • Can't boot off Apple Hardware Test disk

Can anyone suggest why my laptop won't boot off of its Apple Hardware Test disk anymore? I have not tried it in years, but want to try now. I have the original, and a copy I made years ago, and neither will boot. I can select them at startup disks in that preference pane in OSX, but then it fails to find it, and boots into OSX. I can boot into OS9 on the hard drive. I was able to partially boot off of a different AHT disk from my 12" Albook G4, but it gave the message that I can't use that disk since it is not meant for the Tibook. One idea is that TechTool tells me that "macintosh startup file was absent", and the Help file states:
"The Startup file is intended for use by systems that do not have built-in ROM support for booting from HFS Extended volumes. The first eight extents of the Startup File are stored in the Volume Header. This makes them easy to locate and read into memory. This file contains information used by the computer’s ROM to determine what program will boot the computer. In almost every case, this will be configured to point to the preferred System."
But it does not tell me how to restore this Startup file.
-how can i get my startup file back?
-my computer boots fine off the hard drive, so is this file used only to boot off a CD?
-any ideas why i can't boot off my AHT CD?

Hi, t. (That alias of yours sure is a mouthful.) I think in your shoes I would pose the question to the tech support people at Micromat (TechTool's developer). It's their error message, after all, and they should be able to explain it to you in as much detail as you need. Perhaps they'll shed some light on the original problem in the process.

  • Is it dead? will only boot off the OS disc or in safe mode.

    Hi there!
Is it dead? will only boot off the OS disc or in safe mode.
My MBP (March 09) running 10.6 Snow Leopard is playing up.
After a frustrating day of troubleshooting, I don't know what else to do.
    So far:
    Duplicate accounts deleted.
    Permissions repaired and verified
    Renistalled the OS from disc
Haven't been able to log in to OS since,
    - can only boot in safe mode or OS istall disc to use Utility
Disk Utility used in safe mode, disk utility > verify disk, said to repair it from disc boot
    Disk repaired
Still won't reboot out of safe mode - it gets past the blue screen to the desktop wallpaper screen, but the dock or items on my desktop won't appear, colour dial spins, i think the longest i've given it is 20 minutes
Still won't boot other than in safe mode (currently using it right now)
    Did the whole /sbin/fsck -fy,
Invalid file count (Is 484158 instead of 484160)
Invalid volume directory count (is 157609 instead of 157807)
    Repairs successful
Ran fsck again, and HD OK message
Ran exit and it won't boot, only in safe mode again, and to the spinning wheel on the desktop wallpaper screen.
    Is my HD cactus?
Is this something that can be replaced?
    If not, what next?
I'm a little apprehensive about sending it out to get fixed (it's out of three year warrnaty) and I'm not sure how much more they can do/check than I've already done and come to the same conclusion.
Any help, much appreciated and thank you in advance
    Bree.

I just purchased a Macbook pro laptop.  I want to be able to backup and restore as I did in windows with Acronis.  In Acronis I take an image of the hard drive, I can then wipe it clean, (format, Dban, etc) and boot off the acronis boot cd, go to my backup and crestore it.  After the restore Windows comes up and everything from my pc before I wiped it is now there again, no reinstalling or configuring anything.  And it takes about 10 mins or less.
I am looking for a package that will do the same for the MacBook.  Any suggestions please?
    Thank you

There is no system like Acronis for the Mac platform. You can try using the buiilt in Disk Utility to create an Image of the complete Mac drive but I have found that this does not work very well as on tryiing to restore it gives errors sometimes.
You can use SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to create a bootable Clone of your system partition. But that is only for the System partition and not the complete drive.
If you use Boot Camp to install Windows on your Mac neither of those two programs will clone the Windows side.
Neither will Disk utility as Mac's can not create or write to a NTFS partition. So some other program is need for that.

  • Can't boot off System Install Disc

I'm trying to boot off what I think is my original system install disc to run disc utility. When I do the dvd spins up for a minute, stops and the computer only displays a blank grey screen. The System Install disc is version 10.5. The computer, an intel i7 iMac, is running system 10.6.6. I also tried booting off the Snow Leopard install disc but had the same problem.
I'm trying to run disc utility off the install disc because I've been having problems with the machine, ran disc utility of the HD, and got the "This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X Install disc0, and then use Disc Utility to repair this disc"

Check the disc to make sure they are not dirty. Either disc will do the job, but the 10.6 is better, of course.
Try this: Boot the iMac normally and insert the disc. When it mounts, open the disc image and start the installer. It will ask you to restart. When it restarts you will be prompted to select a language. In the next window you can cancel the installer and open the disc utility to do your repairs.

  • Can you boot off a usb drive or external hard drive (usb 2.0) on an iMac?

I have an intel iMac that will not boot off of a USB drive with Ubuntu installed (my PC netbook boots off the usb drive fine) or my external hard drive with Ubuntu installed. I heard somewhere that you cannot boot off of usb on iMacs even if they are Intel, but a Genius bar guy told me diffferent. Then why won't it work for me, and how can I make it? Thanks.

I should have been more general in my post - I don't believe any Mac can boot off an external drive with Ubuntu. I could be wrong of course (and if I am, hopefully someone will correct me), but as Mac hardware is so specific that it demands a specific install disk for each build/model/generation, it would be unable to boot with just a "foreign" OS such as Ubuntu installed. As you may know, you can't boot an iMac with an install disk from a different model iMac, Macbook, or any other Mac (unless it is exactly the same build/model), so it doesn't surprise me that it won't boot with Ubuntu.
Edit: and this question begs to be asked: why would you want to boot/use Ubuntu when you have a superb OS to work with already?

Why is this and is there a way I can buy it off the American store? (The album is called The Boys)

Well how much does the album cost? Because I have an issue with this except I live in America and I wish to purchase something from the Australian store... perhaps I can gift you your album and you could gift me my album.

    Dear Colleagues,
I am currently developing a J2EE application using WLS 6.1.
My team and I have to implement a security requirement to suit our company's needs.
The security requirements are that, users' password need to be aged (30 days maximum) and we need to provided a GUI front-end (JSP) to allow users to change their password when these expire after 30 days.
Our internal contacts in the company, have already taken the lead to find out about whether we will be able to use the WLS 6.1 platform to do this and the answer we got back, was.
Now we need to develop our own security module.
    I have 2 questions:
    1. How can we turn off the WLS security in order develop our own application-based security module?
    2. How can we develop a security module that allows us to age users' password and provide them with facilities to change their passwords when these expire?
At the moment, we are using the default BEA WebLogic login.jsp page and there some configuration in the web.xml for this. I will be grateful if you could advise me on how to turn this default security off so that we can write our own security module.
