Can I build a new computer around my Windows XP hard drive.

I have a 2005 Dell XPS that is slowly dieing.
If I bought a new case and motherboard and all new stuff could I take the drives out and just transplant them into a new machine ?
Is windows attached to the old motherboard ?
I have CS3 and CS4 on it and allot of other junk that I want to keep going just in case I need them.
Any ideas.
Thanks:  GLenn

for a pro level computer NEVER do this.
i wouldnt do it even for a get on the internet computer.
always a fresh install.
lastly i would never build a new system and resue the old OS drive as an OS drive.
might be fine for other things...

  • RE: Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive by wjosten

I really appreciate the detail that wjosten provides on the User Tip entitled "Syncing to a New Computer or Replacing a crashed hard drive".  I do have a follow up question though about my wife's iPhone 4 running iOS 5.1.1.  All her calendar and contacts are on the Cloud - not running through anything like Outlook or Windows Address Book, as far as I can tell.  In the past, we previously synched with a PC.
Since the calendar and contacts are on the Cloud, can we synch using the steps wjosten details on a new PC and not lose the calendar / contacts?  If not, do you have any advise?  Thanks.

If she doesn't want to sync her calendar and contacts with a supported program on her computer such as Outlook, just uncheck Sync Calendar and Sync Contacts on the Info tab of her iTunes sync setting before syncing (which I assume is what she was doing before).  She can continue to sync these with iCloud if that what she prefers by going to Settings>iCloud and turning Contacts and Calendars to On).

  • Can I create a "new" iTunes library on an external hard drive and transfer my iTune library to save space on my laptop

Can I create a "new" iTunes library on an external hard drive and transfer my iTune library to save space on my laptop hard drive

Yes. Just copy all your music to a folder on your external. Then delete the music on your computers hard drive.
It is not quite that simple. If you do that you will end up with many broken links and will have to re-create your library from scratch .  iTunes does not like it when you move or rename files or folders and doing so between drives is guaranteed to result in exclamation marks indicating you have broken the links to all your media files.
If you are content with moving the whole library to an external drive (usually the best thing for most people), try:
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the library.

  • Running Itunes library on a new computer off of an external hard drive

Hello, I've recently purchased a Macbook and an external hard drive. I transferred all my files from my old Mac onto my external and would like to try to run my itunes library from there through my new laptop as opposed to putting all the files onto the new computer.
Is it possible to have the files exclusively running off the hard drive and never going onto the new macbook? How might I go about doing this?
I've tried following some of the video tutorials but that just seems to route you to do it from your old computer off of a external hard drive, and nothing to do with using it on a new computer.
Basically what I want to do is get everything running off the external (all the old computer's data) and none of it ever to set foot on my new Macbook.
Thank you all in advance for your help!

Assuming you use the iTunes default settings where iTunes copied added items to your iTunes folder and organizes your library (meaning - everything is all self contained in the iTunes folder), then all you have to do is drag & drop your iTunes folder (not just the iTunes Music folder you find inside the iTunes folder) to the external drive and copy the entire thing.
If you want to test that it worked or would like to actually start using it from that location instead, use these instructions when you start iTunes to point it to the new location...
How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304447
If you are just testing to make sure a backup copy works and still want to use the internal location, then close iTunes after you verify it works, and restart iTunes again with the same instructions and point it back to your internal drive (original) location. Otherwise you are all set to use the library from the external location.
When you move the external drive to another computer, use the same start up instructions above to point your iTunes on that computer to the library on the external drive.

  • Why can't I move the icons around on my iMac hard drive?  They just pop back in place when I release the mouse.

    iMac Mavericks
Why can't I move folders around on my iMac hard drive?  They just pop right back in place.  I've selected Sort By None. This just started happening this morning so I must have done something!   Any help?

This is a shot in the dark, but try this:
log-in to your iCloud account with your Apple ID
    change your password
ensure your billing information is up-to-date
attempt to re-enable your Keychain (again)

  • New computer, transfered music via external hard drive, library there but music wont play, message "The song "    " could not be used because the original file could not be found. Tech did everything, said call  Itunes support

    New Computer
transfered Itunes library via clickfree backup. New computer Tech support(Premier PC) did this, Now can not play library within Itunes. Message says "The song " song name " could not be found. Would you like to locate it? Same Tech tried different things via on line support could not fix and said call itunes support and say Itunes will not play on new computer.

I was given the option to locate the file where the song is held. If so select "locate" and direct it to the folder / file where the song is and open it. itunes then will give you the option to use this process to update all of your library. OK that as this will do it automatically instead of doing them one by one. I hope this helps.

  • Can I get the new MacBook with a 1 tb Hard Drive?

Well very good looking the new (GOLD) MacBook announced on Monday 9 March 2015.  But with just one USB-C port this means having a number of adapters with me at all times ---
But the big concern is whether I can get at least 1 tb of storage space.  I have a 5 year old MB Pro with a 500 gb SSD and I removed the Optical Drive to install a 500 gb HD.  Now 5 years later…  Am I going to be limited to 8 gb of memory and 500 gb of storage space?  Not a lot of progress there!
I know I can move to the 13" MacBook Pro and get more connection possibilities plus 16 gb of RAM and a 1 TB drive - but I would like to purchase the latest technology (especially since I keep my Macs a long time! - My 1989 SE is still running OS 6.0.4…  --- OK I'm not planning on 26 year lifespans but hey, 5 years, yes, please!)
Any comments appreciated.  I see where they say one can move to 1.3 gHz (turbo to 2.9) - but I don't see where to select that on the Apple Store -- and I see nothing about where to select 16 gb of RAM  nor a 1 tb SSD.
Thanks for any comments or opinions or web links!

Wow this is a great reply!  I did not mean to imply that I would consider or even imagine that a 5200 rpm Hard Drive or anything like that would work with the new MacBook – but what I had NOT considered was that a standard SSD like I have in my MBP-13" (2010 mode)l would also NOT FIT in this almost iPad thin new MacBook!  Of course you are 100% right - it is going to be a real special flash drive -- and yet I am surprised that a 1 tb is not at least offered - even if for $400 or so more--- and I think this is so they have some way to differentiate the MacBook (new) with the MB Air and the MB Pro.
Certainly tempting!  I will wait to see what Belkin and others offer as to docks - and also to see if Apple doesn't offer a 1 tb option within a year.
    Thanks for your fine reply!!!!!!

  • Can I back-up my computer with TM to multiple hard drives?

I have one internal hard drive I want to back-up using Time Machine. I also have two external hard drives. Can I use Time Machine to back-up my computer to both externals, or is Time Machine only capable of using one external HD for the back-ups?

TM can only have one backup drive at a time. you can switch TM drives in system preferences->TM and alternate backups between two drives. or you can use a different backup solution for your secondary backup. see this post for options

  • I can't import my favorites from FF on Windows XP hard drive because it can't see the Favorites HTML file.

My old computer was windows XP and I had a second, larger hard drive with Ubuntu on it. My computer crashed because of the motherboard. I had both hard drives moved to a newer computer (motherboard from 2006) and computer could not boot to windows. It's now booted to the Ubuntu drive and I can access my old info on the windows XP drive. I would like to import my favorites from FF on my windows XP drive to my FF on my Ubuntu drive but "import data from another browser" doesn't find anything because it's looking on my Ubunto drive not my windows XP drive. I tried creating an HTML document of my favorites on the windows drive but when trying to import the HTML file of my favorites on Ubuntu, it can't see it...but Dolphin can see the HTML file I created.

Did you use Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Import HTML ?
Does the HTML backup have a .html file extension?

Some of the information below has subsequently appeared in a document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.

  • I blew my motherboard on an old computer and hooked my old hard drive to the new computer and want to transfer my bookmarks to the new drive but cannot find where they are located on the old drive--any help?

My motherboard went bad on my old computer, but the hard drive was OK. I purchased a new computer and hooked my old hard drive to it through a usb adapter. I would like to import or copy my bookmarks from the old hard drive to my new one, but I cannot find where they are. I was unable to determine this from searching articles on the web. Be advised that my old hard drive is basically nothing but a storage place for files at this point. My old operating system was windows XP, and my new system is Windows Home Premium.

  • How can I use a new computer without deleting everything on iPod?

    Hey Guys
I need a bit of help.
My old computer died, it was running Windows XP. I've got myself a new computer running Windows 7.
I have a copy of my iTunes folders from my old computer (taken 2 days before it died)
How can I use a new computer without deleting everything on iPod touch?
I've imported all the folders (music, apps etc) into the new computer's iTunes, but when I sync my iPod
I receive a window asking if i want to sync i need to erase and replace with the iTunes library on the computer.
I particularly don't want to do this.
My wife also uses my iTunes for her iPhone.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

Make a backup of the iPod by connecting the iPod to the computer and right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and selecting Backup. Then restore the iPod from that backup and sync as necessary.

Transferring bookmarks from old computer to new computer, both with Windows XP Pro?
    Thanks for your h4elp.
Also, can I create a file of bookmarks in MS Word or Open Office so that I can save them?

You can export your bookmarks to an HTML file on your old computer, and them import that file on your new computer. The HTML file also is your backup, and if you open it into Word, you could save it as a DOC file if you prefer.
