Can I burn a Blu-Ray movie on an Imac?

I'm aware of the issues involving Blu-Ray playback on Mac.....my question is simple though:
If I use Final Cut to make a blu-ray movie and purchase an external blu-ray burner, can I make a blu-ray video disk for playback on a blu-ray player hooked up to a television?
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

OWC's hardware product descriptions, for example
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MRF8BDSD8X/
says that you can. However, current Apple software cannot burn to Blu-ray discs. Third-party software, such as Toast 10
http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/toast/titanium/overview.html
should be able to burn to Blu-ray discs. I am not sure if this capability is just for burning data discs, or if it can create Blu-ray movie discs.

A software to play blu ray disk
    You can also try VLC
The new 2.0 release of VLC Media Player says it can handle Blu-Ray video disks. Being free, there's no risk in trying:

  • Can not burn a Blu-ray disc

The problem: Can not burn a Blu-ray disc.
I open Premiere Elements 12 and load my project and then go to “publish and share” my project, I select "create Disc – Burn DVD, Blu-ray and AVCHD disc", I select "Blu-ray", the disc location and settings box opens and the “status” setting indicates "Media not present”.  I know the Pioneer Blu-ray BDR-2208 drive works properly because I have already published regular DVDs in it and had no problems.  I thought perhaps it was a problem with the initializing of the disc whether you choose (Mastered) as opposed to (Live File System). Neither works. I tired Phillips BD-R disc & Memorex BD-RE disc, neither works.  The only thing I noticed was the burner location setting is indicating a Pioneer BDR-208M burner rather than a Pioneer BDR-2208 burner. Could this be the problem? Remember that burner will burn regular DVD's.  Does Premiere Elements 12 require some other additional software on my computer to burn a Blu-ray disc?  Also is there a list of compatible Blu-ray burners? BTW I am using Windows 8.1.

Attached is a screenshot of the dialog box that opens up when I place a regular DVD or Blu-ray in my desktop computer.
In order for me to burn a DVD project in premiere elements if I do not initialize the disc with the above procedure I receive a media not present in the settings box of premiere elements.  I assumed I have to do the same thing with a Blu-ray too.  I've tried following this procedure, also tried using the live file system.  Also tried putting a fresh disc in without doing anything to it and always receive the media not present in the status setting.  One suggestion has been that another program is interfering with premiere elements.  I will also go out and purchase some Verbatim BD-RE disc, whether they work right now or not I can always use them later after I solve my problem.
I Have a lot of great suggestions from you guys and I really appreciate it.  I'm going to work on some of those today starting with loading imgburn and see if I can indeed burn a Blu-ray disc with my system.  I have already created a AVCHD BDMV file on my computer and I will start with trying to work with that and see if that is successful and then come back to premiere elements.  I appreciate the input regarding Cyberlink software.  I have version 8 (came with my Pioneer Blu-ray Drive) and was thinking about upgrading to the latest version but with your input regarding Power Producer I will save my money.
Another thought I had, with Blu-ray disc burners being as cheap as they are purchase one that has been proven to work with premiere elements 12.1.  Time is money, the cost of a new Blu-ray burner is insignificant.  I will consider this option later.

  • Can iDvd burn to Blu Ray?

I bought a blu ray burner and blu ray disks and can't figure out how to use iDvd to burn any such animal ... any suggestions?

Blu-ray H.264 is different from regular H.264 that is used on the iPad, iPod, etc.  You need to use the Blu-ray encoding option in Compressor 4.
To burn a Blu-ray, you need a Blu-ray burner in order to create a Blu-ray disk.  I've found the Sony Blu-ray burners to work very well with Compressor.  Avoid MCETech's Blu-ray burner.  I have one and it doesn't work with Compressor.
Start Compressor 4 and select the Blu-ray disk burning droplet on startup.  Drag your video files on to the compressor droplet.  Press submit and Compressor will start encoding the H.264.  When it is finished, Compressor will pause and wait for you to insert a Blu-ray disk.

  • Has anyone burned 1080p blu-ray discs using Final Cut Pro alone?

I am in the market for a new computer. Currently I am a PC user who has burned Blu-Ray discs using Pinnacle. I am dissatisfied with that software because it hangs and crashes at critical moments in the rendering and burn process. I am considering switching to Mac but will only do so if I can burn true Blu-Ray movies which are playable in an ordinary Blu-Ray player.
I have read some of the discussions on this board and it is not clear to me whether it is yet possible to burn 1080p Blu-Ray discs playable on any Blu-Ray player using Final Cut Pro alone. Can someone confirm for me whether they have done this? Some users have indicated they can only output 720p using Final Cut Pro (which is not very satisfying). Others have indicated it is necessary to use Adobe Encore. If you have to use Adobe Encore to burn, why use Final Cut Pro at all? Why not use Adobe Premier Pro for editing and Encore for burning?

    David S. wrote:
And yes you can author single track 1080p blu ray discs with Compressor 3.5.
But that's not what the OP asked, "using FCP alone."
Why not use Adobe Premier Pro for editing and Encore for burning?
Well, why not just put CS4 on your PC, especially considering you already have the BD hardware?
There is no truth to the rumor that applications running on Macintosh are any more stable than the same apps a PC; all systems crash.

  • Anyone burning to Blu-ray?

Trying to figure out if I can actually burn a Blu-ray DVD with FCP 7?
    Have you done it?
Had One on One session and Apple person had no idea.
I know you can export Blu-ray files out of FCP?
What type of burner to use? and proper DVDs?

    To follow up...
You actually have a choice between burning AVCHD disks (which puts HD content on DVD or DVD DL at bitrates up to 17 Mbps) or Blu-ray (which requires an blu-ray burner and blu-ray media but allows much higher bitrates - up to 40 Mbps or more).
Depending on your use, AVCHD may be more than enough for you.

  • Can Disk Utility burn a Blu-ray ISO file?

This is a simple question to pose: assuming only the best of media and burner hardware (so that problems with those don't come into play), can Disk Utility reliably burn ISO images that represent a Blu-ray disk, complete with chapters and whatever else is contained on a Blu-ray disk?
    Background
I'll be using Adobe Premiere to generate videos for burning to Blu-ray disk. There seems to be several ways for me to do that, and most of them seem to have problems:
    1. From the completed Premiere project, I can jump into Adobe Encore and burn from there. But… many comments on the Adobe forum suggest that route may be problematic. No burn-speed control for instance. The Encore forum is full of people who don't use Encore's burning abilities, but instead use Toast or the PC equivalent.
    2. Use Toast. I've just received a special offer form Other World Computing to buy Toast 11 Pro for $49. But… I've been put off buying Toast because of many poor reviews on Amazon. A handful of poor reviews I could ignore, but there are dozens.
    3. Use Encore to generate an ISO image of my completed Blu-ray, then use Disk Utility to burn that ISO. But… there are websites in the internet jungle telling me I need to download their product to be able to burn Blu-ray ISO images on a Mac. On the other hand, there are reputable websites (here and here) that explain how to use Disk Utility to burn Blu-ray ISOs.
Basically, I'm confused. It seems to me that Encore > ISO > Disk Utility is the way to go, but I would like confirmation from Apple users that this route will work and is reliable. If not, maybe I should be buying Toast before the special runs out on 30 April.

First, I duplicated one of the links in my original post. The correct links are (1) and (2).
Thanks for the replies, but they haven't cleared up my confusion.
On the last page of the first link, lifted from the California Institute of the Arts website, clear instructions are given for using Disk Utility to burn a Blu-ray ISO.
Right at the bottom of the second link, lifted from the Drexel University website, similar instructions are given for using Disk Utility to burn a Blu-ray ISO.
Are both instructions incorrect in their basic assumption? When their students go to video lab to burn a Blu-ray, do the students find it can't be done?
This is really confusing. Toast gets very poor reviews, yet I've never had a problem with Toast 9. Two tertiary education sites tell me how to burn a Blu-ray with Disk Utility, but I've just received two responses which tell me it can't be done. I'm intrigued.

  • How I can burn a Blu ray disc in my mac?

    Hello,
I´m worried cause I don´t know how burn a Bluy ray
But before, how can I do the menus?

    You cannot use DVD SP to burn a Blu-Ray disc. But you can use the latest version of FCP to create Blu-Ray discs. There is a tutorial here;

  • Can I watch Blu-ray movies on my MacBook Pro 17-inch?

If this is possible at all, I think there are two or three issues to be addressed.
First, I understand that to display Blu-ray movies, the display must be HDCP compliant. All I know is that mine has adequate resolution (1920 x 1200). I called AppleCare and they could not verify HDCP compliance; however, they also did not find any information explicitly stating that it is not. Does anyone know the answer to this, and if it is indeed required?
Second, I need an external Blu-ray drive that will work on a Mac with OS X 10.6.4. Ideally it would not require an external power supply. I've got a laptop, so the more portable the solution, the better.
Third, I'm guessing I'll need new software to play the movies on the disc, rather than the pre-installed software that plays regular DVDs. I would prefer a Mac software solution; however, I do have Windows running under Parallels Desktop 5. I am concerned that if I go with a Windows solution (such as PowerDVD 10 Deluxe) playback could be choppy given the dual demands of Blu-Ray HD and the Windows virtual machine it's running on.
    Any advice? Thanks.

Find an external blu-ray player for OS X. Apple has yet to support Blu-Ray in any way, shape, or form

This ebay seller apparently has the drives for all HP models...the exact part number you need (depends on whether yours is black or biscotti in color) is in the prior link above.I would contact the seller in advance with a question and be sure he has your exact model as he seems to be selling IDE drives and I am sure yours is a SATA interface.

$139 is not too bad. A Blu-Ray reader with a DVD burner was an option on your laptop series so it can work. You likely will need to add Blu-Ray playback software to watch movies. If you wanted a Blu-Ray burner the answer is even more complex so I hope you only meant you want a drive to watch Blu-Ray movies.
