Can i buy a domain name outright?

im now ready to launch my 1st website and i am wondering how much i should be spending on my domain name? where from and who to host with, uk based. any advice?

Domain Registrars:
godaddy.com  (do not host with them !)  but the price is good for registering domain names.
http://www.namecheap.com/
Hosting:
Look for a local host in the UK, though it doesn't matter where the site is hosted, as long as you can get support when you need it
Just remember, with hosting, often times, you get what you pay for!
A site for checking out reputations on hosting companies:

Personally, I use and have no problems with:
http://www.gowesthosting.com/   (moved a heap of sites to this company a little while ago and they were very helpful).
http://crystaltech.com/   (have since been taken over by another company, so may move the sites from here to the above company as well  - as I get a lot more space allocation for a better price).
I've also heard good things about:

  • Can I buy my domain name now?

I am about to create a Muse site for a client in a month or two but he would like to have his business cards with his web address on it now. Is there any requirements with third arty hosting i should be aware of?
Also is it going to be a problem for me or my client to update the site often using a third party host? I am not a developer and do not know much about coding. Is it possible to buy adobe business catalyst sites that have the adress as .com or .nz rather than .business catalyst?
    Thanks for your help.

  • Where to buy a domain name

    Hi
Who would be the best website to buy a domain name from to rename my .mac website. I am in the U.K and I want a site that is easy to understand and can move the domain name to my iweb website with ease. Basically a website that isnt complicated because I am not too computer savvy!
    thanks
    Lou

Are you asking how you can set things up so that somebody that goes to www.yourdomain.com gets to see your site created with iWeb? Do you currently publish to a .mac account? Then your web site will be somewhere like
    http://web.mac.com/yourname
Login to your 1&1 account, and find the button that says "Domains". In the "Domains Overview" list should be an entry like
    yourname.com External Domain webspace (/www)
That means the web site is currently pointing at a folder called "www" in your 1&1 account. Just change the destination so that it gets forwarded to
    http://web.mac.com/yourname
    using HTTP forward. That's it.

  • How can i edit the domain name ?

    Hello,
I tried to register my first website through business catalyst. The domain name i took was www.wildixel.com . But, when i am trying to open the website it open other website with the same name. I guess it was already taken. Now i want to edit the domain name. Please let me know how can i.
    Thanks

    Hi there,
Could you please explain more what you are trying to do and have done?
You can not purchase a domain name through Business Catalyst so you would have not obtained a domain you listed there. You have to by it from a domain registra.
If you have just entered a domain into the domain manager of your website but have not purchased the domain, this will not work. You have to obtain the domain first.
If you have got your domain, have you gone into the domain settings of BC and added the domain in? Have you gone to the domain registra and changed either the A-record or the NS records to point to your BC site?

If your domain name has two characters, then you may run into the Microsoft IE 6 bug "Internet Explorer Does Not Set a Cookie for Two-Letter Domains" described in Microsoft article Q310676. The fix for this issue is described in the Microsoft article.
Internet Explorer does not set a cookie for two-letter domains
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;310676
Apart from the above, you should not have any issue.

  • Can you host multiple domain names on mobile me with iWeb '09?

    Hi
Can anyone help, before I upgrade to iLife '09, I have a personal web domain name which I host on my mobileme account. My girlfriend now wants a website and I have bought her a domain name and want to use iWeb to design it but I can't seem to host multiple domains on iWeb '08, can you with iLife '09? Or will she have to buy her own mobile me account? Any help will be great!!!
    Thanks

MobileMe -MME -is Apple's hosting service.
Domain Name System - DNS translates an understandable address like www.mywebsite.com into the IP address which is a number like 40:75:92:301.
Cname is a name of record in a database that records what domain name goes to what IP address.
IP address is just a unique number that identifies any device connected to the internet.
An FTP client is an application the uploads your files to a server using File Transfer Protocol.
I mainly use Web Site Maestro because it doesn't just upload the files but optimizes them first to remove all the unnecessary code that iWeb creates to allow your website to download at least 30% faster.
I also use Yummy FTP for sorting out and keeping track of my files on the server and uploading folders of images and music files along with their assets for flash presentations.
I have used Host Excellence for years because of the way they allow you to name your own root folder on the server and also their great tech support.
FTP and servers can be a bit confusing but, if you have a good hosting company, you can get by on very little knowledge and understanding. I do!
I couldn't agree more with you about the acronyms and jargon. The more people use them usually means the less they know. One of the most misused words is "domain". I tried to sort that one out here...

Now I'm going FUH and ATNP.

  • Can't get paid domain name to work in mobile me website created by iweb.

Bought my domain name from 1&1 and I've set everything up correctly I believe. One Question about Cname at 1&1, does it need a dot after the www.web.me.com
the domain is www.skin2win.com and it takes me to the apple sight saying sorrybut we can't find the iWeb page you've requested. It's possible that: etc etc etc. Go there and see. I am trying mobile me for 2 months free but I don't think I'll buy cause i've had so many problems. Any suggestions?

does it need a dot after the www.web.me.com
Yes and no. (see the quote below) *I don't think you use the www in front of the web.me.com*. The following is taken from the first link below:
" 2 - Point your personal domain to MobileMe by going to your domain name registrar’s domain name service (DNS) management area, creating a “www” CNAME record, and then pointing it to “web.me.com” or “web.me.com.” (including the period) in the address field."

  • Can I use a domain name from client

My client owns severable domain names, can I use one of them in BC? If so, how do I do it?
    Thanks

    Yes, you most certainly can.
In the site admin under site settings once you go live there is a tool for site domains. Just follow the prompts.
Then you will have to go into where the domain name is registered and change the DNS settings to be pointed to Business Catalyst.

  • Can I use several domain names through mobile me ??

Hi, I have just purchased ilife 09 and would now like to add a couple of additional websites that I have purchased alongside my main one www.empressrockband.co.uk
I am fairly sure I should be able to do this but I just can't seem to be able to find anything to show me what to do. Everything I look at seems to show how to add the first domain name but not subsequent ones.
    Can anyone please assist ??
    Many thanks, Tony

No, this is not what they are saying.
What they are telling you to do is use the CNAME forwarding method for all of your domains, which will not work.
What you need to do is is log in as they have told you to do and then alter the A settings to create a new CNAME and then forward the www and @ (which they have said) - this is your domain name, which is the alias and forward it to web.me.com - this is forwarded to the Apple server which will point specifically to your site as it is published to MobileMe.
I take it that you only have one MobileMe account? If you do, then you can only re-direct one domain name using the CNAME/personal domain name option ONCE for every MobileMe account. If you have more than one domain name that you want to re-direct to a MobileMe published site, then you need to use either masked or unmasked web forwarding for the others.
So ensure that the site that you want linked to your first domain name is published first and then link it using the CNAME method, as your domain registrar has explained to you - you also need to ensure that this same domain name is entered into your MobileMe account too and this will then forward to your first site.
For your other sites however, you cannot use CNAME, but you need to go to web forwarding and forward your other two domain names or however many others you have to web.me.com/username/sitename and this is how you forward your domain name specifically to your site, by entering the forward as web.me.com/username/sitename. With the CNAME it is only ever web.me.com because your domain name will then link to your first published site - the web forwarding is specific to the site if you have already used the CNAME.
If you do not know where to find the ordinary web forwarding section of your domain registrar, e-mail them and ask them or ask them to do it for you by telling them which domain names you want linked to which sites and asking them to enable the masking or not and then get them to forward to web.me.com/username/sitename.
Your only other option, if you want to use CNAME forwarding for all of your domain names is to upgrade your one MobileMe account to a Family Pack, where you get on main account and 4 sub-accounts, all of which you can use CNAME forwarding for.
Remember - you can only use CNAME forwarding ONCE for every MobileMe account - for other domains you then need to use either masked or unmasked web forwarding.

  • Can I point a domain name at my web.mac account?

    Hi there, first time poster.
I was just wondering if there was a way for one to point a domain name to a site that I've built on iweb? And if it is possible, how to find out the information that I would need to point the domain name the web.mac account?
    thanks in advanced.
    ~r~

Its easy, usually all you have to do is look for "domain name forwarding" with your provider and your in as we say in Australia. Who is your provider?

  • Can't setup my domain name email with mail

    Mail version 4.5
I have a domain name and an email with that domain ( [email protected] )
I am tring to set it up with mail but it dosen't work.
    Any tutorial about this?

You will have to get the server names from your domain name provider - both incoming (POP or IMAP) and outgoing (SMTP) and obviously you will need your username and password.
The setup procedure is described here:

  • Buying a domain name that's taken

any strategies? register.com links to afternic.com for
purchase info but they charge like fifty bucks a year - do i need
to go with a company like that?

    > any strategies?
is the domain name in use?
if yes- is there any contact info.
if no- first do a whois to see if the ownership info is
    public.
if not- try the "wayback machine" for contact info if there
    were ever any
    pages published there.
    http://www.archive.org/web/web.php
shouldn't consider a domain name brokerage service till
    you've used up free
public info. Or explored different possible names.

  • Muse can't validate my domain name, FTP and folder....? when I try to upload it to Host FTP

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it, which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

  • Whow can I find my domain name

    what

    Hi
You can check your network properties by opening a command prompt and running ipconfig.
You can check your computer name as it will have computername.domainname
You can open up ADUC and check the name there.
Hope this helps. Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.
