Dear Apple readers,
In one week, I will move to Shanghai for work. I have never owned a phone before for the simple and good reason that I never needed one. Until now... Many Chinese people recommended me to buy it from France as it would be cheaper. However, I was told that I need to buy a certain model that can work in China. Can someone tell me which model I have to buy? I I go to a store and be like "Hello, I would like to buy an iPhone 6 model A1586" does it make sense or?
Do you have any suggestion/advice?

There are no officially unlocked iPhone 5's available, in the US, at the present time. No announcement, as to availability has been made. The only unlocked iPhone, available now, is the iPhone 4 or 4S. Either of these versions will work, but will have no warranty or support in India. They can only be purchased directly from Apple, no where else.

You can buy unlocked GSM phones from the Apple store, but you will pay full retail price (no subsidy since they do not come with a plan and contract). The prices are listed at $649/$749/$849 for the 16Gb/32Gb/64Gb models and they will be available in November sometime.
Just be sure to buy it from an Apple store (ie. NOT a cell service provider store - those will be carrier locked) and be sure to get the unlocked version.

If it's an unlocked phone, then yes. However, if you live permanently in Mauritius then you will not be able to get any warranty service there if the phone comes from Dubai. The warranty is only good in the country of purchase. And, you may be required to pay import duty or taxes (you should check on that.) In all it would probably be better to buy it in the country where you live.

Without "unlocking" the phone you must activate it to use it for ANYTHING.
If you have no intention of using it as a phone, get a Touch.

Have you googled this? You have options... Use American carrier and roam, buy an unlocked iPhone or use the Verizon iPhone 5 as it seems to have an unlocked gsm portion. Gsm is more prevalent in Europe so make sure you have a gsm phone.

Check the rating plate on your mini to make sure but you will probably find it is rated for 100-240V so no converter will be needed, although you will require a plug adapter/new power lead.

Only the carrier your phone was locked to in France can authorize the official unlocking of your phone. So contact them as to cost/procedure.

Sounds like the iPhone is locked to a wireless carrier in France.
You will have to contact that carrier to see if they offer unlocking
and if you qualify.
