Can I buy any wifi base station for an airport extreme card?

At my mom's house, there is no wifi, so I was thinking of buying an aebs. but I was wondering if I can buy any wifi base and if it will work with my mac?

The Ethernet output of the modem should be connected to the WAN port on the AEBS.
...and the modem doesnt have a WAN port, but it has two wifi plugs on the top.
"wifi plug"... what is that?
If these other computers don't have a wireless capability, connect an Ethernet switch (or hub) to the AEBS's LAN port. Then connect these other computers to the Ethernet switch (or hub).

I just picked up an airport extreme card for my mac pro. I located the slot in the mac pro, but there are two on top of each other.
Question: which slot do I have to use: the upper or lower one?

Thanks for the answer, however inserting the card was
not the difficult thing. Finding the correct wire for

I want to buy the mac Pro and install the airport extreme card - what is the model number of the new card (apple tech tell me it is different from the old G4 card of the same name) and which is the correct wire to attach it to?

  • I can't find an ac power adaptor for my AirPort Extreme base station.

I was given an AirPort Extreme base station, the square model, I just need an ac power adaptor. I can't seem to find one that will definitely fit. Help please?

It is easier and better to give the model number from the base.. A1143 is the oldest Airport Extreme that is N wireless.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AirPort_Extreme
All the models from Gen1 to Gen5 use the same power supply.. 12v 1.8A
But it can be replaced with any standard 12v supply.. of sufficient current rating.
The real thing is expensive. It still doesn't have the Apple cord.

Buy a power supply rated at 12v 3a 4a or 5a .. any of those ratings will work well.
I generally buy 4a or 5a. as they tend to be a bit better. Although if you check they all seem identical to each other..
Check in your local market if you want one fast.. just do ebay search for 12v 4a power supply..

Power cord is probably a standard IEC computer cable.
Cheaper from HK but if you want reasonable quality pay around $10US.. cheaper can be rubbish.

  • Where's can i Buy any Professional Authoring DVD for IMAC, did you know about Studio DVD pro ?

I need help, i need buy or dowload some Professional Authoring DVD for IMAC, I editing in my Final Cut Pro X and need a DVD authoring
after installing the Mavericks, my IDVD don't work, can someone help about this ?
also, did you know if DVD studio pro its available for sale ? if yes, where's can I buy  ?
    thanks

Apple discontinued DVD Studio Pro three/four years ago. You can probably find copies from private sellers, but whether it will work without problems on OS X 10.9 I don't know. I don't know of any "professional" alternative to DVDSP for Mac, but someone else here may be able to offer suggestions.
As to iDVD, it should work under Mavericks, depending on what version of iDVD you're running. You might ask for assitance in the iDVD forum. For alternatives to iDVD, see this page for suggestions:

  • What base station for older airport card?

I have put an airport card (id# 0030652BADB7, 128 bits) into a friends iMac G3 and need to get a base station but don't know what to look for. Can anyone help? Thank you.

viad, Welcome to the discussion area!
"Extreme" is Apple's marketing term for 802.11b/g and 802.11b/g/n wireless networking. Any of Apple's base stations will create a wireless network that the iMac G3 can connect to.

  • I have a MacBook ProDo I have to have the Airport Extreme Base Station for my Airport Express to work?

I cannot get the darn Airport Express to work!  It just keeps blinking Amber.  I know it must be something silly I am over looking.  And I do not have the Airport Extreme Base Station.
    Thank you for any help!!!

    Thanks,
This is the rear of your modem/router:
Connect a Cat5e or Cat6 cable from any of the 4 Ethernet Lan ports to the (single) socket on the Express, then go to Airport Utility (Applications>Utilities>Airport Utility) and select create a new network.
You will need to turn the wireless transmiter in the Netgear off, here is a link to the Netgear Manual in case you need to refer to it.

  • Can't get security to work - Airport Extreme card and Netgear router

This apparently is not as simple an issue as I expected, so I would appreciate some help.
I just got dsl and a Netgear WGT624 wireless router to connect my wife's iBook G4 with AirPort Extreme card. I used a wired-in pc to set up the router via the web interface and can connect the iBook to the web wirelessly as long as I have security disabled. When I attempt to set WEP or WPA the connection fails.
Initially, I assumed I just was missing something in the AirPort setup, even after looking through all the documentation I could find. I upgraded yesterday from 10.3.3 to 10.3.9, just to see, but had no improvement.
If I select "WPA-PSK(TKIP)" in the router, it asks for a password, which I also then enter to login to the selected network via Internet Connect. I get "there was an error joining..."
If I select "WEP" with 64 bit and shared key options, use the same password to automatically generate the assorted keys, I am not sure what to enter to login. I have received incorrect password messages or no response at all.
I would appreciate any further direction or suggestions.
    Thanks
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.3)

One of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier for people, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling people to use simple memorable WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys.
The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a Netgear client and vice versa.
One thing is a 13 character 128 bit WEP password will be hashed by all vendors in the same way (if you use 40bit WEP then a 5 character password is required).
Though sometimes not even that works and the HEX key must be used regardless.

"WPA Personal" on the Mac corresponds to plain WPA, with a pre-shared key (PSK) and TKIP encryption, on non-Apple wireless routers. The same alphanumeric password should work on both.

  • Changing power output for Airport Extreme Card

How do you change the power output for the Airport Extreme Card? Is there a program that I can download to change airport's settings or the Airport Extreme Card's settings?
i.e. If the default power output for the Airport Extreme Card is 18mW, I would like to increase it to 25mW.

There is no way for a user to control the power output of the AirPort Extreme card.
Furthermore if the card was manufactured to output 18mW there is no magical way to increase it's physical ability so it can output more power.

  • Can I use my iMac i5 as a WiFi base station?

I have an iMac i5, which is supposed to have a built-in Air Port Extreme card. My problem is that my regular WiFi (a Verizon-supplied FiOs combination WiFi/Router) is for some reason not working well the past couple of days. We can't figure out why, and we may need to get a new router from Verizon. All my family's computers (four PC laptops, an iPod Touch, an iPad, the iMac and a desktop PC, see below, and no, they aren't all turned on at the same time).
I have two major desktop computers in my downstairs office, a PC that I use for trading (because none of my brokers have platforms that work with the Mac) and the iMac, which I use for the production of an Internet video broadcast. I had previously hooked up my iMac via the WiFi, and the PC was connected using the Ethernet cable because it does not have a wireless.
Since the WiFi signal has suddenly gone bad, I've had to connect the Mac via the Ethernet cable. It might take weeks to get my WiFi problems straightened out, and I can't afford any down time. Would it be possible to use my iMac as a secondary WiFi base station, and then get a WiFi card for the PC trading computer and hook up wirelessly through the iMac?
The other option would have me running another 100 feet of Ethernet cable from the router, which is a mess and would require more holes drilled through the walls and floor. Or another option would be to daisy-chain the single Ethernet cable to service both the iMac and the PC, but I'm not sure if the Verizon router would support that.
Many thanks for all help. J Beau

FYI. This results in a "double nat". Most browsing should be fine but if you have problems with various network protocols talking between your wired and wifi computers, Bonjour or Airplay for example, it is because you are double NATed for your wifi clients.
I would strongly recommend that you invest in a wifi access point to handle you wifi needs. Many manufactures make a pure access point model that is not also a router.

  • Trying to connect a NetGear Wifi Range Extender to my existing Wifi. I have an Airport Extreme Base Station and I am also connected to a Vonage Phone Router. Any help would be appreciated?

I am trying to connect a NetGear Wifi Range Extender to my existing Wifi. I have an Airport Extreme Base Station and I am also connected to a Vonage Phone Router. Any help would be appreciated?
The Apple update Firmware for my Airport Extreme Base Station does not update for some reason? Help?
Additionally, I have an older version Airport Express that does not update with the newer Airport Utility Version 6.3 and asks me to download 5.6 to update? Is this worth it?
    Thanks

The netgear is not going to work very well.. and not at all unless it is universal wireless extender.. you cannot use WDS method.
If it does support universal wireless then make sure the airport uses a rational SMB compatible wireless name.. not an apple name which is 35 characters long with spaces and illegal characters like apostrophe.
So nice AE name.. AEwifi and actually while you are trying.. fruitlessly to do this.. use AE24ghz and AE5ghz (so different names on the different bands)
Assuming your AE is gen3 or greater.
You should also fix the wireless channel at least for 2.4ghz since the netgear is probably only going to repeat 2.4ghz so use channel 11, as a trial.
And use no wireless security as a test.. if that works.. then use WPA1 & 2.. as often old equipment using WPA2 is not compatible.
If it fails with simple name.. fixed channel and no security. Sorry it is not compatible at all.. it happens.
If your AE is G wireless or earlier model.. really the time has come for replacement.
If your Express is G wireless model it is not supported.. and is too old to bother with expect I guess if you want to run audio to a speaker.
You must use older 5.6 utility to do this.. so do you have a computer running older OS.. up to Mountain Lion it is easy to install with a bit of manipulation.. later is much harder .. or windows computer anywhere or available to you.
