If you really, really, really want a new iPad you could look into selling your current iPad on eBay or CraigsList...you can probably get a good fraction of the cost back if it is in pristine condition and then put that money towards a new iPad.
But you do have a great iPad that should serve well for some time to come.

You do need to backup via iTunes, as Kappy as said, or via iCloud.
iTunes does not tell you where it actually places the backup files when you backup to your Mac or PC, but they are stored in the following places:

This is more than you probably wanted to know, but I was working on another question where a user was not satisfied to know that iTunes was backing up his iPad.....he wanted to know where the actual backup file was located.

I guess there's huge differences in mobile telephony and and mobile Internet understanding in US and Europe. Mobile market in Europe is much more liberated and unified at the same time (GSM being the only widely adopted system in Europe - so far at least). The question in the first post was really simple:
If I buy AT&T (GSM) version of iPad 2 will I be able to use it with other GSM micro-sim cards from other carriers worldwide? Or is iPad locked to AT&T USA like iPhone is.
Then all of a sudden people started to talk about Verizon and AT&T differences, eBay thing etc - it is not the point.
So let's wait for someone who can get their hands on iPad 2 GSM (AT&T), travel to Europe, swap the sim and then confirm here for our benefit.

Could you be more specific?
Is it possible that your company modified some settings on your iPad that might restrict your ability to purchase or download certain apps? (Check this in Settings > General > Profiles - if the Profiles menu item is not present, then this is not a problem)
Are you signed in with the same Apple ID on both your iPad and iPhone? (Check this in Settings > iTunes & App Stores)
What version of iOS is installed on your iPad and iPhone? (Check this in Settings > Genearl > About > Version)

iPads are not carrier locked. All new iPads 3G/4G have sim slots and will work with foreign sims. Wifi-only iPads do not have sim slots, for obvious reasons, no 3G or 4G capability.

Look on thier website, there is some sort of recycling program, but honestly? You'll get more money if you sell your device outright then use the proceeds towards a new one. For an iPad 2 you can probably get 150 - 200ish for it (just look for sold devices on ebay to get a realistic idea of paid prices)

I am a US citizen in school in Montreal and I was given a US Apple Store gift card. How can I buy the new iPad using my gift card and with a school discount?

I am a grad student from NYC and at a university in Montreal. I was given a 500$ gift card as a gift to put towards a new ipad. BUT, I apparently cannot use the US gift card in Canada. So, what do I do? I have no time to head back to NYC to get it. I want to order it, but not sure they will ship to montreal...? And was thinking of sending it back to my parents and then have them buy it and mail it to me, but I I think them having to pay tax on this is ridiculous. On top of that, I should be able to garner the ed discount but I dont think the US recognizes Canadian schools in their system and visa versa. SO if I do buy it in the US, I can use my gift card but I can't get the discount. Or if I buy it here in MTL, I can get the discount but I cannot use the gift card..

You can only use a gift card in the country it was issued in - no way around that as the Apple Store does NOT offer currency exchange with gift cards.
Nor can you order from the USA online store and ship to any address outside of the USA - again, no way around that as the online stores do NOT ship internationally.
You could send the gift card back to someone in the USA, to use to purchase your item for you, and then once they receive it, they could ship it to you. Canada customs will hold it until they collect any import fees and taxes levied on imported consumer electronics though.
Either that or buy it in Canada with the discount, and use the card later when you get home again.

Can you buy a 3G iPad and not activate?

Just curious if you can get one without activating. If I find a 3G before I find a WiFi only I may just buy it, but I don't need the 3G.

I have an AT&T 3G iPad2. I called them for instructions on how to initialize 3G later then how to turn it on and off. If you skip turning on 3G as first (I did), then you go to Settings>Cellular Data>View Account>Registration. After you register it you can control, within limits, when you are being charged. The default set up is to automatically renew your contract each month. To turn that off and have manual control month to month you go to Settings>Cellular Data>Account Overview>Cancel iPad Services> Cancel Later. This last "Cancel Later" actually turns off the automatic renew each month. Then you can decide if you want it each month. Once you turn it on for a month you get a full month's bill even if you use it only one day.
I don't know if or how this would work for Verison.

Best Buy told me they have to remove my virus to save my computer. I asked them to back up my files of course there is a fee. Is there a way for them to back up my files on a CDR or DVR and not fix the virus. I don't care if they dump my computer and I get a new one. I just need my files.

Find a KNOPPIX or Ubunutu Linux LiveCD, and boot from that. Back up your files to an external hard drive using the LiveCD.
Then virus scan the external HD. DO IT FROM THE LiveCD! A LiveCD can't get infected by a virus (read-only media), and in addition 99%+ of Windows viruses can't infect a Linux distribution.
