Can I buy Leopard retail second hand?

I lost my Mac OS X Retail Leopard install disc that I bought years ago. My friend is willing to sell me his Retail Leopard install disc however I thought I'd check with you to see if this is okay. He no longer uses Leopard as he sold his old iMac and now uses Mavericks on his new MacBook Pro.
So my question is this: Can I buy his second hand retail Leopard installation disc and safely install it on the G5 that I just picked up second hand? Or do I need find the retail version brand new on amazon or ebay etc.?
I'm asking this because with Microsoft Windows you need to buy it brand new because the serial only works with one machine. Which makes it very hard finding Windows XP retail version brand new and installing it legally.

You need to make sure you know what a retail disk is.
The normal distinction is that retail disks are black and model specific disks are grey but there are exceptions.
You also need to make sure you have an optical drive which can read the media.
My Leopard DVDs are 9.5 GB double layer and not all optical drives can read these.
OS X 10.5 does not require a serial number to install.
OS X 10.5 Server does require a serial number to install.
As far as I am aware neither will stop working if they have been used for multiple installs (legal or otherwise).

  • If I buy an iphone second hand, how can I check that is valid and purchased for real?, If I buy an iphone second hand, how can I check that is valid and purchased for real?

    Hello
I'd like to buy an iphone second hand and although I trust the source I'd like to be able to check with certainty that the phone was bought instore.
I was thinking to ask for the receipt and check the serial number. is the serial number written on the back of the phone and the recipt(if the phone is sealed)?
Similarly, if I buy an ipad 3 or 4 second hand, how do you check this again?
Please let me know with some details about this.
    Thanks
    Anthony

Ask the person you are buying the phone from to provide the original proof of purchase for the phone. If you do not know the seller personally I would be very cautious about purchasing the phone. There are many many stolen, hacked and jailbroken phones out there and these will only cause you grief down the road.

  • Where can i buy Leopard

Hello to all just a quick question
Where can i buy a retail disc of leopard in australia ?
How Much is it going to cost?, because snow leopard is $39
and i am going to put it on a iMac G5
    thank you

The phone number for Apple Australia, in the web page header
on the top left side, may be a place to call and inquire of this item.
The correct, main sales number and web page URL appear below.
Since I'm not familiar with how their phone system works in Oz, it
may be a first step in asking if a product specialist can help you
order the correct retail Leopard OS X 10.5 installer DVD so you
can upgrade your older computer that can't run Snow Leopard 10.6.
    *•Apple Store: 133-622* - +online Apple Store (AU):+ http://store.apple.com/au
This telephone number is also for main online store Sales Support.
    The above is not a means to connect to a local or 'physical' retail store;
in that they are not usually able to supply you with a non-current product.
The actual stores likely won't have products not in the current inventory.
*Sales Support*, via their phone number, is the recommended contact here.
    Good luck & happy computing!

i have icloud lock on my phone i buy my phone second hand i cant find seller what shoud i do?i have icloud lock on my phone i buy my phone second hand i cant find seller what shoud i do?

If a second-hand iOS device has been 'Activation locked' then only the previous owner can unlock it, either by providing you with the account ID and password, or by removing it from his list of devices (as he should have done before selling it) - please see http://support.apple.com/kb/ts4515
If you are unable to contact him to do this then I'm afraid you will not be able to use the device - there is no other way of unlocking it at all. Apple cannot unlock it for you.

  • Buying an iphone second hand

i am currently buying an iphone off somebody else and they say it comes with the warranty but i was wondering if this enough or do i need the warranty to be tranferred into my name or anything?

I'm thinking of buying an iPhone second hand but have read stories of people selling them and then getting them IMEI blocked at a later date
I think you're referring to Activation Lock: Find My iPhone Activation Lock - Apple Support
Only buy a second hand phone if the previous owner has done all the steps in the following article:
What to do before selling or giving away your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
Ive seen the receipt so I know it came from an Apple shop so will be SIM unlocked.
That makes no difference, and that does not mean the phone will be unlocked.

then after that a STOP sign appears and its stuck there..
What shoudl I do? Pls help me on this one. Thanks!

Presumably, you want Snow Leopard in order to be able to run PowerPC applications.  If so, more information can be found here:

  • Buying MacBook Pro second hand, what to look for?

    Hi there,
I'm just wondering what should I look out for when buying a 2nd hand machine. I'm thinking of buying a late 2008 model. Any tips etc would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

How does it look physically, that is always a great indicator of how well it has been taken care of. Does the owner have the original Install Discs the computer shipped with. If it doesn't walk away, these are needed if diagnostics ever need to be run and also for re-installing OS X. Also if the seller promises extra software for example MS Office, any Adobe products, etc. it should include the media otherwise it indicates you are possibly dealing with a thief. Does the computer boot and run OK. Does the computer have Apple Care, if so that's a good indicator. Ask if any repairs have been done, if so what and if it was fixed.
BTW have your considered an Apple Refurbished machine. If you buy one from Apple they come with the same warranty as a new machine (1 year) and are also eligible to buy AppleCare. Most people that buy these cannot tell the difference between a brand new machine and a refurbished machine. If you are in the US the Mac Refurbished store can be accessed from this link. Also no risk to you where buying a used machine can be very risky.

Wow, great response. Appreciate the efforts you guys went to.
@rkaufmann87 - No I wasn't aware apple sold refurbished machines. For an extra €189 I can get the same spec as the spec I was looking at, bar a smaller hard drive off the apple site. Not sure what to do. I would be safer sticking with buying direct from apple.
One thing I've noticed, though, when going to purchase on the apple site, it says when I click the delivery info: Ships — 15 Apr, 2011
Delivers — 21 Apr, 2011 by Standard Shipping
*Your order will be shipped when all individual items become available - as one shipment*
Does that last highlighted bit mean that I have to wait for a refurb to become available ? Or is it if I was buying several separate items on the same order. The reason I ask is I need the laptop asap. Cheers again guys, appreciate the help!

  • Where can I buy a retail copy of Windows?

I just bought Parallels Desktop 8 From Amazon, and thought I was also ordering a copy of windows seven. But when the package arrived, Windows 7 turned out to be an OEM version with the warnings all over it saying that it had to be preinstalled on a computer and only used with having also bought a computer. I haven't ever bought a Microsoft product before, and I assume that that operating system is similar to the OS that comes with a Mac computer. In other words, you can only use it with that one computer. I returned it to Amazon for a refund, I don't really understand why they even have that for sale if you can't actually use it. In any case, can anyone tell me where I can purchase a retail version of Windows 7 or Windows 8 that I can install on my Mac to work with parallels?

This is a link to what I bought on Amazon:

I'm copy pasting in the description, minus the box picture,  in case that link doesn't work.

Platform: Windows   Price was $91 on sale from $128
Has the following product description. When I first ordered this I didn't scroll down far enough to see this description, only saw it on the box when it came and I didn't understand it. But after your explanation, I think it means I can use it. Would appreciate your guidance.

  • Where can I buy a retail copy of Mac OS 10.7 or 10.8?

I am utterly livid at the lack of a Restoration Disc included with the MBP bought at the end of 2011...
the hard drive is failing, and without an install or restore disc, I have no way to load a system onto a new HDD...
I am told that i must download the installer i need, which would seem impossible with the HDD failure wreaking havok on the MBP's functionality...
    suggestions?

It's not impossible with a blank HDD if you have Internet Recovery. I think your late-2011 came with OS X Lion preinstalled.
Make sure you have an Internet connnection and restart using Command+Option+R until you see a spinning globe to start Internet Recovery. This boots into Apple's server and their Recovery HD. Once you get to the OS X Utilities menu, you can launch Disk Utility to format your new drive (Mac OS Extended-Journaled, GUID partition table). Afterwards, you can Quit Disk Utility; then Reinstall OS X Lion from the menu selections. This will download and install the most current version of OS X Lion (10.7.5) for your Mac.

  • How to make sure mac is clean from "find my mac" before buying second hand?

    Hello.
I plan to buy a mac second hand.
The original owner say he removed it from icloud's and wiped it.
So from what I understand, it should be completely disconnected from his apple id, from the internal firmware safety locks, and he will not be able to accidentally (or not) to lock or remote wipe it, ever. Is this correct?
I would like to know if there is a way to confirm this.
If I enter the mac, do a new wipe and reinstall just to make sure, insert my own iCloud and apple id, and turn on the "find my mac", and I won't get a message that the mac is already in someone else's list, this means that the mac is safe and isn't on anyone's list like a father, son, daughter who accidentally linked it or something.
I know the seller is the original owner. I just want to make sure the iCloud and apple id are no longer linked to the computer. Just on the safe side.
I just don't want any issues along the way in 2-3 years from now.
    Thanks.

You need to be able to see that Find My Mac is turned off. That is all you need to ensure.

  • Going for Second Hand

Some of my friends use to ask me to buy a second hand Nokia mobile phone for them. I use to check some shops for abovesaid. How can check those mobiles which is in good condition? the Battery works better or not? How long charge will stay? How can make out mobile phone is worth for buying as a second hand?
Hope any Mobile guru will answer for this question..
    Thank you.

There will always be a risk involved with this, you should always make sure the phone is fully working with a sim card before you buy it, make sure it connects to the network.
It's hard to say for certain about the batteries, but they're not expensive to replace, so I would always suggest they 'prepare' to have to buy a replacement.
If it looks or sounds too good to be true, there's probably something wrong with it.
Also, one of the other risks involved with buying second hand, is that there's nothing stopping the previous owner from reporting the handset stolen afterwards, which will result in the handset being barred and unusable... It's up to you at the end of the day, I would always try and go with a new handset.Message Edited by richcowell on 20-Aug-2006

  • I've got tiger and I want to buy snow leopard for it. should I do it or buy leopard instead?

I've got tiger and I want to buy snow leopard for it. should I do it or buy leopard instead?

The only operating system you can upgrade to is OS X 10.5 Leopard. Snow Leopard requires an Intel processor, which the Powerbooks don't have. I confirmed the other day that you can still buy Leopard from the US online Apple store at 800-MY-APPLE.
Before you update, be sure you download any updates to non-Apple software that may be needed to run under Leopard.

  • I have zero out all data on my imac, as i brought it second hand and the disk the guy supplied dont seem capatable with my imac to install the operating system again so it is frozen at the grey start up screen. show i buy a new snow leopard disc fromapple

i have zero out all data on my imac, as i brought it second hand and the disk the guy supplied dont seem capatable with my imac to install the operating system again so it is frozen at the grey start up screen. should i buy a new snow leopard disc from apple and install that as my new operating system. please help as had the computer a month now and still cant use it yet.

You can call AppleCare and request a replacement set of the original DVD's that shipped with the computer for a nominal charge. You will need the serial number (look on the bottom of the stand) and a credit card. Click the AppleCare Contact Info link. Without knowing which iMac you have it's very difficult to say if a new SL disc would work or not.
