Can I change Address Book's default setup?

I want to import my entire address book database from Palm Desktop to Apple Address Book (only about 5,000 entries in total).
I have several fields in the Palm Desktop database that don't match the Address Book default setup. In Address Book, I went to Card> Add Field> Edit Template but the changes I made there to the Template didn't actually seem to change anything in the actual Address Book display of addresses, even though I made several changes in the Edit Template function - it was as though the changes I made in the template editing function had no effect at all. The changes I made are still there when I revisit the Edit Template function but the additions and alterations don't show in the final address display.
1. Where did my changes to that Template go in respect to the actual display of the addresses?
2. Is there some way to apply my edited template to all the entries in Address Book in one fell swoop?
3. If not, then why have the Edit Template function at all?
I've done some trial runs using a tab-delimited file exported from Palm Desktop, which Address Book seems to import and work with happily... except for this inability to choose my edited template for the new entries - Address Book forces the new database into Address Book's own Template with none of my chosen changes. It's as though the template edit function is just for show but with no real functionality.
I hope this is all making sense...
This is an great time for me to make sweeping changes if necessary (if it is possible or if it helps) since I'm beginning a totally new database in Address Book from scratch.
Many thanks for any help.

Paul,
I'm afraid you will loose some of your data that you can insert in your Palm when you transfer to AddressBook, but you can try to get in as much as possible. Especially the custom fields are much more flexible in Palm.
But in the end, the full integration of AB in your Mail and Calender, backup to .Mac etc. may offset these drawbacks.
When you set up a template, did you actually complete one address record?
If not, you should.
When you want to import to AB from a tab-delimited file, try this program
Addressbook Importer, an excellent piece of freeware that will do this for you.
In the top row before you import, make sure you have an address record that has all your customized fields completed in a way you know which field that is (you can do this in Palm, using the name A. AAA, address etc.)
Now when you use the importer, you can make sure wich field goes where.
Backup your Palm data well before you start experimenting. I wouldn't want to be the cause of you dropping 5000 records. Also, disable all syncing when you start. Once it works, make a backup from within the AB application. Then when all looks OK, you can start syncing using iSync instead of Hotsync.

  • Can i change address book font?  and size?

can I change my address book font and font size?  operating system is OS 10.9

OK, I just answered my own question.  But since there have been so many questions on this forum over the years - about changing fonts/sizes/colors - I thought I would share what I learned with others.  Remember that I'm using OS 10.9 and Contacts 8.0. and this may not apply to older or future versions:
Whe you are in "Contacts," click on "File" and drop down to "print."  Click on "Print."
A printer page will come up.  On this page, look at the lower righthand quadrant.  You are given a choice to select either "layout" or "label."  Click on "label."  Now you will see, the bottom of that block, the word "Font."  Immediately following that word, you will read the name of the font that "Contacts" is pre-set for, which, in my case says "System Font Regualr-12.0."  To change this font, you now click on the button to the right that says "Set."  When you click on "set" a drop down menu will appear.  Voila!  From here you can choose your preferred typeface, color, and font size.
Have fun. Glad I could help myself.  Hope this helps you!

  • Can you mode Address Book database to a shared location?

I'd like to move my address book DB to a shared location. Dropbox in particular, but it would be the same thing using an iDrive.
The idea being that my Mac & my laptop would both use one shared db so they are always in sync. A change made on one would be the same on the other.
Anyone know if this is possible?
I know you can sync contacts with MobileMe but Dropbox is free and I have no need/want for wasting $99/yr on MobileMe just to sync my contacts. This is more of a "wouldn't it be nice" than a necessity/
    Thanks

you can try it but I would advise against it. the results might be unpredictable.
here is what you can try. quit address book on both computers. on the computer with the full address book database move the address book folder /users/username/library/application support/address book to the dropbox folder. leave a symbolic link to the new location in the old place. that's done with the following terminal command assuming you are using the default location for your dropbox.
    ln -s ~/Dropbox/AddressBook ~/Library/Application Support
wait for Dropbox to finish syncing so both computers have the new folder in place. that's very important. then on the second computer delete the address book folder /users/username/library/application support/address book and run the above command too. now the AB folder sits in the dropbox and you have sym links pointing to it on both computers. however, I suspect you might have issues if you try to run address book simultaneously on both computers. if you feel brave you can try it out. but back up the address book folder first.

  • Can I link address book and numbers?

I want to add addresses in Numbers, and thought to myself that it would be very handy if I could just link them to my address book. Even more perfect; if/when an address changes, the entry in Numbers should change as well (automatically if possible, but manually is ok as well. Is this possible?
I tried to just click and drag an address into Numbers, but couldn't figure out how to choose which fields should or shouldn't be in Numbers. Let alone the linking...
    Thanks in advance,
    Joris

Well, that's one way of course, and it may be that I have to do it that way, but it woudl save time and effort if I only had to change address book, without the extra steps.
Maybe I just have to bite the bullet, buy database software and transfer everything into that.
The plan was to have addresses, a summary of contracts, invoice details and calculations etc. all in a pages spreadsheet, but perhaps that's asking too much anyway.
I don't understand what's the meaning of  "pages spreadsheet" but I guess that you may stop hoping for an automatic transefer of datas between AddressBook and Numbers.
At best, what may be delivered is a script able to grab AddressBook contents and pass it in a Numbers table
and a script able to create AddressBook records starting from a Numbers table but
    (1) it will not be easy to treat the problem of duplicates
    (2) several fields available in AddressBook can't be transferred to Numbers.

  • How can I import address book from thunderbird on another computer

I just purchased a new laptop and have dowloaded Thunderbird for my e-mail as that was what I was using on desktop. I have 2 e-mail accounts, my personal e-mail addresses came thru with no difficulty however my other account the contacts in address book didn't come thru. So question is how can I get address book imported for this account too. My desktop is Windows XP and my laptop is Windows 8
    thanks for any help

The neat thing to do would be to copy the profile from the XP machine to the W8 machine. This would have transferred your messages, your account settings and your Address Book and much else.
Given that you have set up Thunderbird and have started using it, copying over the profile may not now be terribly attractive for you.
So, instead, you can export and import your Address Books.
On the XP computer, open the Address Book, select an address book (e.g. Personal Address Book), select '''Tools|Export''', select the name and location of a file to contain the exported data, choose LDIF and then Save. Repeat for each required address book. Give your LDIF files simple but meaningful names, such as PAB.ldif and CA.ldif. Don't use, for instance, ''Personal Address Book.ldif'', as this will create a second address book with the same name as one of the defaults and you won't be able to easily tell which is which.
Put the exported LDIF files where the W8 computer can see them, e.g. a USB memory stick.
On the W8 machine, open the address book, Tools|Import and select an exported LDIF file. It will import and create a new address book; you'll probably want to move the Contact data back to the usual address book. You can select all (ctrl+a) then drag-and-drop the imported Contacts to the preferred address book. Repeat for each LDIF file.
Having said that, I don't understand what you mean by "my personal e-mail addresses came thru with no difficulty however my other account the contacts in address book didn't come thru"; unless you have moved the profile folder over, I don't understand why ''any'' contacts should have transferred.
If you have in fact moved the profile folder, then I'm puzzled as to why the transfer of address books has been incomplete. However the export and import route should be able to reclaim the missing address book(s).

  • Mail change address book!

hello, excuse me for my BAD english...
I have big problem with my address book:
i have a imac 27" and macbook air with snow leopard and 1 iphone 3gs.
i have, also mobile me and I sync with mobile me address book, calendar and more...!
It is very very good for me BUT I have a problem.
    Sometimes some contact CHANGE name!
I have do many tests and I have see THAT IT'S MAIL program that CHANGE some contact name when I send an e-mail at this contact!!
for example: I have 200 contact. 5 of this have an e-mail. the other only number...
I send an e-mail with Mail program from my imac to one of this contact...for example John Mcdonald...
immediatly MAIL change the name of John Mcdonald in my address book. (and mobileme change the name on my iphone and on my macbook air...!) the name often change to John mc donald john mcdonald (repeat two times...) or john john mcdonald...or, for other contact change to CAPITAL (JOHN MCDONALD).
so, in my test on this BUG I have connected this problem to adressees precedence on MAIl program...If I empty this "adressees precedence" I don't have the problem...but I need to empty every day...2-3 times a day...!
I hope You can help me...!
I hope apple can resolve this BUG: WHY MAIL program CAN modify MY ADDRESS BOOK??! MY ADDRESS BOOK is MINE!
    do you have this problem?

how do you manage a business contact in order to overide the problems before said related to the union mail/address book?
There is no problem with Mail and Address book regarding this except the fact that the OP is trying to conflate a perfectly normal behavior into something abnormal. This is not a bug, no matter what anyone else may think. It may be inconvenient to the thinking of some people, but it's not a bug.
Address Book is meant for keeping contact information of individuals, with their given first and last names. It is not for keeping information in any fashion you like. Failing to adhere to the design of the program will yield unexpected or unwanted results. It's not a free-form database, nor was it ever intended to be, so people need to stop trying to use it as such.
I seem to manage my contacts quite well without problems by simply entering their given names, along with their company name (where applicable) in the Company field, and their email address(es). I've never had a problem yet.
There is a way to completely disable this behavior, but it would also have the effect of forcing you to completely type the full email address(es) of your recipients each time you send an email.

How can i backup Address Book & iCal using TM?

just back up your whole computer and those things will be backed up along with everything else. Time Machine is not well suited for cherrypicking just a few things to back up and it's a bad idea anyway. if you insist on backing up just those two things back up homedirectory/library/application support/address book and homdirectory/library/calendars.

  • How can I import address books from Thunderbird to Mail?

I had to use Thunderbird for all my Mail, because I cannot import about 10 different e-mail address lists with a total of about 300
addresses (contacts) into the Mail application nor into the Contacts Application.  Every other e-mail application, and every server
    supports imports like this.
Apple appears to have no solution either.  On Apple Support site for Mail and Contacts, it says "Support temporarily not available"
and said so for weeks.  I tried to import into Contacts, using Thunderbird address book files converted to ..Idif  format and Contacts
imported them import without any fuzz.  The folders appeared in Contacts  as sub-folder the same name I had in the export files.
After the import I quit both Mail and Contacts and restarted my MacbookAir, it runs on OS 10.8.5., Mail is version 6.6.
I opened up Mail and the new sub-folders were listed in its Address Book window,  However when I clicked ao any of them, they
would not open.    I opened the Contacts application, and the folders were still there but when I tried to open the they were empty.
Is there a way to import those addresses, so they will show up?

Thanks for trying to help but .mbox is used for mailboxes, not address lists (Contacts).
I understand that Apple Mail and Contacts use .csv files for their lists, and I was able to
import my first Contact List using that type of File, but then was only table to get the name
the content of one List imported.
Last thing I tried, I used my Webmail Server which can import all address books (Contacts) and
export them across all sorts of different e-mail applications (they list about 10 different types)
and yes, the only missing is Apple Mail.
Looks like I am stuck with having to use Thunderbird, because I Mail will not import my
    Contacts.

Can I import address book info from Mac 10.5 to 10.7?   It tells me "You can't use this version of the application Address Book with this version of Mac OS X.  You have Address Book 4.0.6."

The Apple Support Communities are an international user to user technical support forum. As a man from Mexico my first language is Spanish. I do not speak English, however I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. Try moving just the folder at Mac HD/users/~/Library/Application Support/Address Book from 10.5 to the same location in 10.7.
Or in Address Book on the old Mac go to the File menu and choose Export Contacts Archive, copy that file to the new Mac and in Address Book on the new Mac go to File menu Import, browse to the archive file on the new Mac and choose it.

  • No contacts in address book, can not find address book anymore

I was trying to switch default email accounts, Hughes.net was the default and Yahoo the secondary and I wanted to swap these around as I am no longer using Hughes net.
In doing so I lost all email folders and address books. I have rebuilt the folders but now I see that I have no address book in either accounts.
    Are they gone for good?
    Thanks.

There are two default address books in Thunderbird. Both of these address books can be copy pasted between mail accounts.
''Personal Address Book'' is called '''abook.mab'''
''Collected Addresses '' is called '''history.mab'''
These are stored in your Profile folder in the mail account name. But it would need your old mail account to be intact in order to copy anything from it to another mail account.
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Thunderbird
    * C:\Users\Windows user name\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\Profile name\ mail account name
The AppData folder is folder is a hidden folder; to show hidden folders, open a Windows Explorer window and choose "Organize → Folder and Search Options → Folder Options → View (tab) → Show hidden files and folders".
If your original mail account is still there: Profiles\Mail\mail account name
You could simply recover it. Info here:

Remember, when performing any changes in Profiles folder, Thunderbird must be closed first.

  • Change Address Book to CardDAV

I am using a CardDAV plugin from SoGo to sync contacts with all of my devices. The problem is, if I add any contacts in Thunderbird, it goes into the personal address book. How do I make contacts go into the synchronized, CardDAV folder, instead?

My issue is that applications such as Skype, Phone Valet and Daylight (to name a few) only see the "On My Mac" address book. I added my Exchange account to Address Book and it works perfectly. However, these other applications only see the "local" address book. Changing the default application for contacts simply give the user the ability to put NEW contacts into an alternate address book (i.e. Exchange). Can the "On My Mac" address book be sync'd with Exchange?
