Can I choose what day my new Mac is delivered on?

I'm about to buy a new iMac, but I want it delivered at the weekend when I'm in. Can you select a date for delivery or do you have to just wait and see when it turns up?

Can I choose what to migrate from one mac (Powrebook G4) to another mac (New iMac)?  I do not want everything to be migrated, as some programs are not compatible with Mountain Lion or an intelIntel mac!
As it is a brand New iMac I would also like to keep it clean of unnecessary files that have become  imbedded in the Powerbook over its time.Therfore it would be nice if I can pick and choose what is to be transferd. If you can give me a heads up on if and how it would be appreciated!!!

Thanks for your input!… I have now come across an Article from Apple
    Migration Assistant tips and tricks
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3231?viewlocale=en_US
    Controlling what is migrated
With Migration Assistant you control the data that is migrated from another Macintosh computer. By clicking the triangle next to a user's name, you can select which User Accounts to migrate and choose which folders to migrate. You can also choose whether to migrate Applications, Network and Computer settings, or Volumes. Migrating only what you need can reduce the time it takes to complete your migration.

    Oliver,
Are you getting activation errors? As Ned stated , it is easier to troubleshoot if we have the specific type of error and error detail that you are getting.
Here is some help on activation if this is the issue:

  • How do I export itunes library onto an external hard drive so i can put the music on my new mac book?

How do I export itunes library onto an external hard drive so i can put the music on my new mac book?

iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
do not confuse moving your whole folder and library with moving just media files as in
iTunes for Mac: Moving your iTunes Media folder - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449
Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.

  • How can I learn to use my new Mac Air?

How can I learn to use my new Mac (I am a long time user of Windows), without having to go to Apple Store. Ours is 50 mi. away. Is there such a remote service? (Apple's or otherwise)

If you enjoy learning by reading, here's an excellent book in my opinion:
Switching to the Mac: The Missing Manual, Mountain Lion Edition
The author, David Pogue, is the New York Times technical writer.  He is, in my opinion, an excellent author.  This book is accurate and complete.
I have no financial interest in the author, publisher, or Amazon (the link points there).  But I did use a previous version of this book when I started with Macs and am a satisfied customer.

  • Can't get WIFI on my new Mac Book Pro

Setting up my new Mac Book Pro and on the WiFI page, I see and select my network name.  Enter password and it hangs.  Try other networks and get same result.  I have two iPads and they work fine as do other devices. I thought I maybe maxed out on my router so I disconnected two iPads from the network and the Mac still hangs after I enter the password.  I know the the PW is right cause I can reconnect my iPads.  DSL router is a Century Q1000. Does the Mac Book Pro require a different WiFi router?

i can't find idvd on my new mac book pro? I've looked everywhere.
A sad loss to bundled software, with, I presume, their thinking being that optical media is soon to be a thing of the past. Superdrives have been done away with in the newer MacAirs and MacBook Pros and will eventually disappear in all devices. Downloading Apps, updated, visual and audio media, etc. will all take place via wireless transfer, as with SmartPhones and Tablets. Therefore who will need a program that makes great DVDs?
Me for one. Still have iDVD on my iLife '11 DVD and will keep it until all my Macs are no longer supported, which could be next year or next decade, who would know. So as babowa says, get a DVD while they are still available.
    Good Luck

  • ~350 back up on a 1TB HDD... Can I choose what to specifically put on new..

Long story short, I spilled water on my macbook and am contemplating getting a macbook air with insurance money to replace it. I had a 500gb hdd in the macbook and it was filled with about 350gb of data and backed up on my external hard drive. The air I get will most likely have 256gb of storage so I plan on putting all my movies and music on the external and keeping apps, etc on the built-in storage.
Obviously I won't be able to restore it all to the new mac, so how can I basically just take the music and movies from the back up and start over with everything else? I may be able to just figure it when I get to that point but I was hoping for some suggestions of some kind. Thanks!

You don't say how large your backup drive is or if it is a bootable back up (like a clone), a Time Machine backup, or just Finder copies of user files or something. This makes giving specific advice a bit hard, but here are some things to consider:
Your 500 GB HD from your drowned MB may still be OK. If so, you could use it in an external drive enclosure or with an inexpensive adaptor (like this one). This would allow you to delete the movies and music files on it (making sure they are safely backed up on the existing backup drive!) & then use it as the source drive with Setup Assistant when you first startup your new MacBook Air. This has the advantage of transferring all your applicable system & user settings, third party applications, & other user files from the MB, saving you the time & effort of setting everything up from scratch.
Alternately, you may be able to do much the same thing with existing backup drive, assuming it is a bootable drive or full Time Machine backup (one that includes system files & the normal boot drive folder layout) & all or most of your movies and music files are in the default "Music" & "Movies" folders of your user's home folder on this drive. This will work because Setup Assistant allows you to migrate users but to exclude certain of its folders, including the "Music" & "Movies" ones. To do this, attach the backup drive before first startup of the MBA & in Setup Assistant choose the "From a Time Machine backup or other disk" option. Choose the backup disk in the "Select your disk" step. In the "Select Items to migrate" step, click the disclosure triangle next to the "Users" box to show the users & check the user(s) you want to migrate. (Note: the disclosure triangles may not appear until the "calculating…" step completes, so be patient.) Click the disclosure triangle next to the user name to show its folders & uncheck the Music" & "Movies" or other folders as needed to reduce the total size of the selected items so they all will fit on the MBA's drive with room to spare for normal use. (The bottom of the window will show you the available space on the drive & the total of the selected items, making it easy to do without guesswork.)
If your existing backup drive is neither a bootable one nor a full Time Machine backup, it will not appear in the Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant "Select your disk" step & you cannot use either assistant to transfer user files, applications, or settings from it to the MBA. For this case, you will need to set up the MBA from scratch & manually transfer selected user files from the backup to the MBA. In general, it is best to reinstall third party apps from scratch & to be careful about what you copy to your user folder. For help with that, see the user tips section at the top of the main Installation and Setup page.

  • Can I turn off XHCI on new Mac PRO?

I am interested to get a new Mac Pro. I am a bit disappointed that there are only four USB3 Ports. I know that there are expansion appliances and devices that will provide a few more. here is my issue, which will determine if I am a buyer:
I will need to turn off XHCI, reverting to USB2, and hopefully on a port-by-port basis. Now before anyone jumps up and tries to tell me that XHCI will support USB2, I can tell you for provable certainty that XHCI is not truly backwards compatible with USB2. USB2 is an emulation under XHCI. There are some devices that will not run under such an emulation. One of them is the Microtelecom Perseus SDR Radio. I am a collector and SWL enthusiast of 35+ year duration. SDR (Software Defined Radio) is the newest, and very exciting development in Radio. Few are made with MAC OS compatibility, so I run them in Virtual Machines, under Parallels. This works handsomely on my Mac Pro 1.1. But my Mac Pro is long in the tooth. I would like to replace it with a new Mac Pro. But only if I can turn off XHCI. Also please do not wax on about how the manufacturers of such devices should upgrade to USB3. That is not an option for radios that were made 10 years ago.
There must be a way to do this. Apple must certainly want to market the Mac Pro to the Scientific Community, many of whom have devices which are USB2, and finicky about their connections.
I would prefer to turn off XHCI on a port-by-port basis, or to find an extension/expansion device that is not a simple passthrough of USB.
I asked this question at the Apple Store here in San Francisco today, and no one had an answer, or knew what I was talking about. My question was escalated twice to supposedly more knowable persons, none of whom had any idea what XHCI is.
    Anyone here know?

No response here in 3 days, so no one knows.
I did manage after a few tries to get an Apple Tech on the phone through the Sales Dep't. He said that there is no way in the Mac OS to disable XHCI settings, and while he recognized that PCs offer control through BIOS, that Apple offers no access to BIOS. He said further that one might discover a way through the Terminal app, but that Apple would not support that if done by a user. So I am NOT going to spend $3500+ on a new computer to have to hack it, and put Support and Warranty in jeopardy. No new Mac Pro for me, no sale for Apple. I may look for a refurb or eBay used Mac Pro 3,1-4,1-5,1, where I can drop in a PCIe USB3 card, and have both for my use, as I wish; nine hardware USB ports sounds good to me.

  • Help! Can't install SSD in my new Mac Mini Server (2012)

Previously I've purcahsed Mac Mini servers and removed one of the two drives, replacing it with an OWC SSD. The hardware change was not hard to do and resulted in incredibly good computers for my employees to use which allowed us to retire several old, slow and abandoned-by-Apple Mac Pros. There were no issues with reformatting the computers after they had SSDs put in.
Today I took delivery of a new Mac Mini server, and started to do the same thing, removing the top HDD and sliding in my SSD, since I have many of them around. Unfortunately, the OS would NOT let me format the disks separately or remove the RAID. The volumes (the original 1 TB that was inside and my 480GB SSD) were both colored red when I booted into Internet Restore mode and ran Disk Util, something I've never seen before, and all it would do was say "there was a problem with your disk, would you like to revert it to a working state?" which in this case means Disk Util forcing my drives back into a RAID whether I want them that way or not. (At one point it fused my SSD and the 1TB drive into a single logical drive that had the correct size but didn't show separate sections, and couldn't be de-RAIDED at all, even when I connected to another computer with the Mac Mini in Firewire target mode.)
I gave up and put a 240 SSD in the lower bay, resulting in a 760GB RAID of two mismatched SSD sizes, which isn't what I wanted but I guess it will do. So far it seems to be working.
My question is, why in the heck is Apple forcing me to run my computers as a RAID and/or not letting me break the system into one hard drive and one RAID, which is what I want? (Having the backup disk right inside the computer is very handy.)  Is this some feature to keep us from "making our own" Fusion drives? If Apple is deciding we can't hack or do anything interesting with Mac Minis, this will the last one I purchase, and I'm sure there will be others who do the same.
Since replacing one HDD with an SDD is likely to be the most popular mode imaginable for Mac Minis, can anyone tell me if they got a similar setup to work, and if so what did you do? Can you post the steps here for others who will be in this situation?

I'm not sure how or what is different between the Standard 2012 Mac Mini and the 2012 Server...? However it looks like your Server also uses Fusion like or similar to the regular Mac Mini's.
"The version of Disk Utility that comes with Fusion Drive is unique. Earlier versions of Disk Utility can't be used with a Fusion Drive."

  • I can't add printers to my new mac book pro with retina display

I am trying to set up my HP wireless printer to my new mac book pro with retina display.   I can't get it to work!  I have down loaded the latest driver for my printer, and when I go into the printer area and try and add the printer, nothing shows up and it won't let me even add it.   I can't seem to connect my mac directly to my printer either as I must need a different cord as there does not seem to be a port for the "phone like jack" that I could fall back on with my old Mac.    My printer prints great so I hate to just buy a new printer, but I can't get this to work.   My wireless router is located in the basement, far away from where I keep my printer so it also makes it hard to rest everything.  I even bought the blue tooth adaptor for the HP printer thinking that would solve it all, and nope!  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have made some progress.... I can print wirelessly from my printer now, but I can't set the printer itself to be wireless.  I had to move my printer downstairs to where my router is...which is not that convient.   I printed up the page you asked about....and as expected, it says it is off line and there is no IP address.    So now I need to figure out how to make my printer itself wireless.  I did download the HP driver I needed...but I can't access it to do anything else.  It seems l like I am missing a step... or I need to hook up my computer itself to the printer to help get the printer to be wirelss, but I can't hook it up because there is no port for me to do that (no port that looks like a phone jack).  I am guessing I would need a different type of cord, but I am not sure what kind of cord that would be! Ugh!

  • If I have an old disk with iWork 08, how can I download it on my new Mac Mini?

My new mac mini doesn't have a disk drive, so I'm not sure what to do. Will it still work on Mountain Lion?

You can certainly try disk sharing.
Don't you have a Flash drive or external Hard Drive? That would be the simplest.
The DVD is not crucial to the installation, only the installer on it. I keep mine on a dedicated installer passport HDD along with all my other software, their serial numbers and purchase info and the updates to those.
