Can I choose which Backup to recover, or ir it always the latest?
I recently installed iLife 08, but my iMac G5 doesn't meet iMovie's requirements (it needs 1.9 Ghz, I have 1.8Ghz), so I would like to go back to my previous iLife, which will be on TM Backups. However the latest Backups will have iLife 08, so I'd like to get a restore from a time before I installed iLife 08. Is this possible - can anyone help, please?
Thanks Barney - is it really that simple? I didn't think to do that. Will try that this evening. Appreciated.

Can I choose which season artwork is used for display over the whole TV show?
I have a TV show with multiple seasons and multiple album covers, but iTunes chooses one to display over the whole show list that I don't like. Is there some way to choose which season cover is displayed over my whole show, you know, WITHOUT changing all the album artworks of all the episodes?
LaunchPad-Control was very useful to do exactly what you want on OS X Lion the developer has stated that there are problems when running on Mountain Lion and will not provide any support.
Your only option now is to create folders with related applications. Click on an application in Launchpad then drop it onto another thus creating a folder then rename the folder to something meaningful. -
I have Time Machine backup on an external drive. I want to mirgrate all my files onto the new Mac Pro but migration is getting hung up and cant find the drive. Can I set up Time Machine for the new mac on this same drive and then select the old macs backup from within Time Machine?
Most likely, some folders were excluded from your backups as the result of a failed or aborted software installation.
Starting from a clean installation of OS X, set up a new administrator account and log in. Enter Time Machine and press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible.* Select the one you want and navigate to your home folder (in the Users folder at the top level of the old startup volume.)
You should now be able to restore your user data. I suggest you do this in two stages. Quit all applications except the Finder before you begin.
Restore all the visible items at the top level of your home folder.
Hold down the option key and select Go ▹ Library from the Finder menu bar. Enter Time Machine and restore all items in the Library folder. Log out and log back in as soon as the restore is complete.
Any other invisible folders or files at the top level of your home folder that you want to preserve will have to be restored separately. For most users, that isn't necessary.
You'll have to reinstall all third-party applications from scratch, or restore them from another kind of backup, if you have one.
You'll have another problem if this is a new computer, or if you erased the startup volume: The next time you back up, Time Machine won't recognize any files as being the same as they were before, and will make a full copy of all files. There might not be enough space on one or more of your backup volumes for that. There are different ways of dealing with that situation, depending on your needs. The easiest way is to set your backup drives aside, if possible, until you're sure you'll no longer need the data on them, then erase them and start over. Meanwhile start a new backup on one or more empty storage devices. If that solution isn't workable for you, ask for instructions.
*If you don't see any snapshots in Time Machine, exit the time-travel view and then hold down the option key while selecting
Browse Other Backup Disks...
from the Time Machine menu, which has an icon that looks like a clock running backwards. Select the backups of your computer by its previous name. If you don't have the Time Machine menu, open the Time Machine preference pane in System Preferences and check the box marked
Show Time Machine in menu bar -
Can I choose which backup file to restore?
Just lost my data off my 3GS, which would hang during the backup, sync, upgrade process every time I tried to go from OS 3 to 4 in the past 6 mos or so.
Went to Apple store, decided to just trash everything, restart on OS 4 and just use most recent successful backup to restore. Ended up upgrading to an iPhone 4 instead...
Came home and looked up my .mdbackup files and there are three of the them. May, October and November of 2010. I plugged in my new phone, hoping to access the most recent backup and it shows only the May one.
Is there any way to access and restore to what appears to be the most recent November backup file?
Thanks. Thanks Barney - is it really that simple? I didn't think to do that. Will try that this evening. Appreciated.

Can I choose which programs or apps upload data to iCloud?
My iCloud account tells me that my 5GB are full (that's right from the start when I updated the software to iOS5 :-S) Well, I noticed that there are actually just a few apps that I would want to make data backups for in iCloud. Can I choose which programs use that function? The only option I found so far is to turn the data backup function off or on, for ALL the apps. But I only want to use it for a FEW ones! Is this supported in iOS5??
PS. How come it gets full so quickly? The programs that uses most data (Hipstamatic for example) use only barely 0,5GB. So what I can see the 5GB shouldn't be full yet. What have I missed?I think starting from the second home screen, the new app will be placed in the first available space. If this is the case, you would be able to control the placement manually by making sure your landing screen has empty icon slots and all previous screens, with the exception of the first one, have all of the icon slots occupied. I did run across an app that seemed like it would allow the user to create placeholder icons on the home screens but I can not think of the keywords to pull it up now. There are several icon creators/enhancers that may do the same thing. You can use one of these apps or use the Safari button to Add to Home Screen, to fill up the screens. You could even use a folder to store and deploy your screen filler icons. It seems like it would be more trouble than it's worth but I do have my home screens assigned for different roles. Hopefully Apple will continue to refine the user interface.

Several contacts have the same email address. How can I choose which contact name appears on the address line in Mail?
you can't really, but you might be able to filter them by message content into folders for each, or color them with tags

Then do so.
How many backups do you have?
Note that a new backup is created only when you restore the iPhone. -
I see there is another ios update. I have an iPhone 4S. The last time I updated the ios I lost all my contacts, as I had not been using the iCloud as a backup. I am now apprehensive about the latest update. How can I determine if contacts are backed up?
You should never lose contacts under any circumstances.
Although contacts are included with the iPhone's backup, contacts are designed to be synced with a supported address book app on your computer where such important data should be available with or without an iPhone or any cell phone. Not a good idea to depend on a cell phone for such important data which can be lost or stolen or damaged beyond repair.
In addition, there are a number of free email accounts that support syncing contacts over the air including an iCloud account, Gmail, Yahoo, and Hotmail.
If you are not syncing contacts over the air with an iCloud account and not backing up your iPhone wirelessly with your iCloud account, your iPhone's backup is being updated by iTunes on your computer which is updated as the first step during the iTunes sync process.
With Windoze, contacts can be synced with Outlook 2003, 2007, or 2010 along with syncing calendar events, notes, and reminders, or with the address book app used by Outlook Express and by Windows Mail called Windows Contacts for syncing contacts only. With a Mac, contacts can be synced with the Address Book app. This is selected under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes.
If the supported address book app on your computer is not used and has no contacts available, before the first sync for this data enter one contact in the supported address book app on your computer. This will provide a merge prompt with the first sync for this data, which you want to select. -
I had to reformat my OSX 10.5.8 and I can't restore my emails from my time machine backup from an external hard drive - only the latest (post backup) time machine back ups are available to restore. Please can any help? I can find the mail folder in my libraries, but the Restore Button is grayed out
OSX treats the reformatted drive as a different one; it's the same as replacing it, and the old one is no longer connected.
See #E3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting to see and restore from the "old" drive.
And, you may not want to restore via the Finder; see the blue box in #15 of Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions. -

Before when I clicked on a hyperlink in a Pages document Pages immediately opened the link. Now Pages ask if I want to "Edit or Open" the link. Is this an option that I can turn or off or is this just a change with the latest update? This only started in the last six months or so.
iWorks "09" Pages ver 5.2Use Pages '09 which should still be in your Applications/iWork folder.

My company's website can only handle ver 3.6 and I want to run the latest version. Can I run both?
Yes but only one can be your default browser.
See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Using_multiple_profiles_-_Firefox
And take a backup while Firefox is down all of your profiles before hand to an external drive and store offline. It's easy once you've created and used different profiles once. You on a Mac so I can't provide details but you want to backup
starting with the folder above the one your profile is in. You can find the profile
you are by typing about:support into the location bar, then click on button "Open Containing Folder" that is your profile but since you will be having multiple profile go up one more director above that and backup that folder.
Whether you know what do with the backup now is not as important as having them. -
