Can I config. a SSD with two SATA drives on a RAID pro card?

Hello,
I'm planning to order the new Mac Pro (hexa 3.33) and want to run OS X and my main applications off of it for speed. I was planning to get two SATA drives and connect them with a RAID pro card. Is this set up compatible (i.e. running an SSD with a RAID pro card installed in the system)?
The reason why I'm asking is that on the APPLE build your MAC site there is a note about the RAID pro card:
"Note: Solid-state drives are not compatible with the Mac Pro RAID Card in either RAID or Enhanced JBOD mode. To add a solid-state drive to your Mac Pro in any drive bay, you must deselect the Mac Pro RAID Card."
Thanks for your help guys (and gals)

Thanks. I have the Apple RAID card in my Early 2008 Mac Pro and it's served me reasonably well. I use it for RAID-5 and I don't care about booting Windows so that's not an issue for me (though I confess that I hadn't even considered the implications for Windows).
I bought the system with one Apple drive (a 1TB Hitachi) and added three additional Seagate 1TB drives and have had no problems beyond the need to replace a failed drive, and in that case the array was rebuilt and the system is behaving well again.
Ah, so you're talking about third-party SATA controllers that go in a PCI Express slot, to which one would connect a third-party RAID enclosure via eSATA, is that correct?
Concerning the additional SATA ports on the Mac Pro motherboard: I don't know about the just-announced models, but MacSales was/is selling a SATA cable for the prior model--apparently that model has one additional SATA port (not two) on the motherboard.
By the way: I had a question in another thread (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2545031) about whether it's possible to upgrade my Apple-card-managed RAID-5 array in place. If you (or anyone else with expertise) could take a quick look, I'd appreciate it.

How can I use an iPad with two itunes accounts?
    Hi there
My partner has a works iPad, which has her works Apps on (ones that are specifically made by her company and are NOT available in the App store).
What I want to be able to do is to ALSO have my itunes account on there so that I can put all the apps I have purchased previously from my iPhone on it.
This is so I can put on VLC player (thats already in my itunes account) so I can add videos to the iPad.
How do I do this please?
I tried it before by connecting it to my mac, but it wiped everything off the iPad completely and also deleted the data settings for using 3G.
So I want to avoid this happening again the future as it had to be sent back to her head office to be sorted again.
    Any advise please?
    Thanks

You can't. The iPad is desgined to be a 'one user' device and only really works with one apple ID at a time.
The only way would be if she, at work and with her work apple id, downloaded your apps (repurchasing them of course).
It's not meant to be a multiple user/multiple ID device.

How can one use Mission Control with two monitors.  With Spaces I could treat each space as a single desktop.
    SyBB

I use two monitors at work and have no issue. I have my mail set to use Desktop 1 and iTunes set to the second monitor of Desktop 1. I have browsers set to Desktop 2 and Fusion and RDC set to Desktop 3.
Two things that may help you. In System Preferences > Mission Control, disable the setting "Automatically rearrange spaces...". This screwed with assigning applications to certain spaces. And the other thing is don't use full screen on apps that support it. This just makes your second monitor superfluous.

  • HELP !  Two SATA drives in an external enclosure RAID ZERO.  Need data recovery.

What a nightmare !     My neighbor died from esophageal cancer and the funeral is in one week.  He left behind a G5 2.5 DP tower with a dead motherboard, and he put the two 640 GB SATA drives in an Other World Computing external enclosure Mercury Elite Pro Dual) weeks before  he expired.  He got access to these drives in this enclosure.  (External RAIDs are a no-no).
His grieving wife wants pictures extracted from the drives.  There is no known back up and the G5 tower cannot be found.
When connecting the external enclosure by FW800 or USB3, the need to format flag pops up.  Disk Utility shows one 1400 GB drive "unformatted".    The DIP switches on the enclosure are set to RAID 0.   Several data recovery programs find files, but of course any jpg over 50kb looks like venetian blinds,  Tried Data Rescue 3, and the drive depicted as 1280 GB does not divide using expert features and the command key, thus a RAID SET for emulation cannot be formed.  See here: See here: http://www.prosofteng.com/blog/recovering-data-from-a-apple-raid-using-data-resc ue-3-by-prosoft-engineering-2/
What to do now to recover jpg's intact and ASAP ?
    1.  Try another enclosure ?
    2.  Insert these drives into my personal G5 tower ?
    3.  Try different data recovery software ?
    4.  Which software other than Data Rescue will recover from two drives in one external enclosure believed to be RAID ZERO ?
    Thank you.

Yes, if and when the tower can be located and retrieved.   In one communication it was described as a G4, in another, a G5.
Turns out that a single external drive was found, so suspect that is the boot drive.  In the mean time, am doing an emulated recovery (two sets) using two converter boxes to isolate the two SATA drives, assuming RAID 0 and 32kb striped,   The two sets and because the drive order is unknown.   The first recovery is almost completed.
BTW, OWC rep stated that the two drives cannot be read in their dual SATA enclosure.  The rep stated that the drives would have to be reformatted while in thier enclosure, then use.  Tried two enclosures to see if they would read the drives independently, and one brand had a silly interface.   One has to put in two "dummy drives" (or ones in which the data is not important) and then convert the electronics (reset switch + power button) to RAID 0.

  • Operating system not found when deploying to machines with two hard drives using MDT 2013.

Computers with two hard drives will not boot after the install OS step in the task sequence.  I get the "An operating system wasn't found.  Try removing drives that don't contain an operating system" error.  I am able to get the
machine to boot by swapping the hard drives' boot order, but the  task sequence won't complete after this.  The deployment works fine on machines with one hard drive, and I'm not getting any errors from the task sequence.  I'm deploying windows7
enterprise x64 using MDT2013.  This is a new custom image and task sequence generated using MDT2013.  I can't remove the second hard drive because there are scripts that run on the second hard drive during deployment and also because I don't desire
to remove and re-install 250 hard drives.  I've not experienced this problem with earlier versions of MDT.

The bdd.log file you sent does not show two internal drives, it shows only one.

  • Dual boot setup with two hard drives

Hi all, I've searched through the forums but haven't been able to find an answer to what I figure is a couple pretty easy questions.
My wife has an older G4(circa 2000) with OS 9.2.x on it now. What I would like to do is put a new, larger HD in the box and install Tiger on it. I've found write-ups talking about installing Tiger and OS 9.x.x on different drives or on the same drive in different partitions. My problem is I still am not sure how you switch between Tiger/OS9 with two different drives. Is Tiger able to recognize the OS9 on a different drive and allow you to easily switch back and forth like it does when they are installed on the same drive?
My second question is hopefully even easier. Can I head on over to my local computer supply store and pick up any old ATA HD like I would for a *Nix/Windows box or am I forced to get one directly from apple like I had to with a bad power supply?
Thanks in advance for the help all.

    OK, here's mine for comparison:
    ibook:~ michaelc$ bless --info /Volumes/*
    finderinfo[0]: 3040 => Blessed System Folder is /Volumes/OS9.2/System Folder
finderinfo[1]: 0 => No Startup App folder (ignored anyway)
    finderinfo[2]: 0 => Open-folder linked list empty
    finderinfo[3]: 3040 => OS 9 blessed folder is /Volumes/OS9.2/System Folder
    finderinfo[4]: 0 => Unused field unset
    finderinfo[5]: 0 => No OS 9 + X blessed X folder
64-bit VSDB volume id: 0x233F23EAA912CD05So it would appear this might be the problem, since you don't have a "OS 9 blessed folder".
Now, I have never had to do this, but have seen it work for others. The bless command has a lot of options, many of which we don't want here. But let's give this a try. Remember, copy and paste this command into a text editor (TextEdit will do). Then edit the command to put your volume name in it (in place of <yourvolumename>, without the angle brackets), and copy and paste again into Terminal.
You will need to be logged in to an 'admin' account:
sudo bless -folder9 /Volumes/<yourvolumename>/System\ Folder/Press return and you will be prompted for your password. This is not echoed for security reasons: just type it and press return.
Then, if you get no complaints, I would issue a
rebootcommand. Your OS 9 System Folder should now be available to you in your Classic preferences screen.
Let us know how this goes!

  • Trying to setup RAID 1 with new SATA drives on xserve 2009 model

Trying to setup RAID 1 with new SATA drives on xserve 2009 model
I have an Xserve rack mount model Xserve 2.26 Quad Core (EMC# 2279) with an Apple RAID card, 24GB RAM (running 10.9 Server software)
Purchased two Western Digital 1TB SATA III 7200 RPM 64MB Cache Black WD1003FZEX drives
It came with three 160GB SATA drives.  I'm leaving one of the original 160GB drives for the OS, but I want to replace the 2 other drives and set it up with RAID 1 (mirrored). I bought 2 brand new Western Digital 1TB SATA drives and formatted them on another Mac through Disk Utility with Mac OS Extended (Journaled) formatting.  I then placed the new drives in the Xserve and booted it up.  After I login it immediately gives me 2 error windows saying...
    "Apple RAID Card
The Apple RAID Card installed in your system requires your attention."
It has two buttons underneath this message allowing me to either select 'Ignore' or 'Open RAID Utility'
I've tried to RAID the drives the Disk Utility and through the RAID Utility with no success.
I have both drives mounted on the desktop, as separate drives, but I really need to set these up as a RAID 1.
I've been reading other forums, where others have been able to get this to work by using a jumper on certain pins (5 & 6)of the drive to back down the transfer rate to 1.5 Gb per second.  I tried that and it didn't work for me. Maybe I used the wrong pins -- I just don't know.  I'm also wondering if there is some Apple firmware that is required on these drives?  I'm asking for help from anyone who has gone through this same issue.  Thanks in advance.

UPDATE --  I had an issue with the RAID card battery, it was dead and I have since replaced it.  But I am still unable to setup the RAID 1 drive configuration.  Does anyone know if it has something to do with the faster transfer rates on these new drives.  Maybe they need to be clocked down with certain jumper settings on these Western Digital drives?  Or am I fighting a losing battle because these drives don't have Apple firmware?  Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

All drivers from CD installed (Updated drivers via Live Update Yesterday)

    Good evening -
Thanks for the response. I loaded drivers from CD.  I want to keep the operating system on the 80 GIG ATA drive and use the SATA RAID for programs.  The drives show up in the device manager and in the VIA RAID utility that came with the motherboard but I can't see or access them through My Computer.  I have tried to set up the RAID through both the Windows software and through the Boot program, but no luck.  When I tried to update the drivers from the floppy it said no newer drivers found. (I tried to update drivers through the Device manager.)  Also when I deleted the raid and tried to set up the drives individually the same thing happened.  Is it possible I don't have the BIOS set up correctly? I am at a loss.

  • Trouble with two hard drives including SMART failure

About a week ago my mac mini g4 that I've had for less than 3 years, crashed while I was using itunes and playing music off an external usb drive.
As a result there has been trouble with both drives:
    *Internal hard drive failure:*
The internal drive would not boot and reported a fatal hardware error, with a SMART failure. Interestingly, when I start up the computer as a firewire target and run the same Disk Utility program, it does not report the fatal error. I was able to reformat this drive and it seems to now be booting and running fine.
    *External hard drive failure*
The external hard drive worked intermittently and then died completely a few days later, where it is now unable to mount it at all.
Does this mean I have two failed hard drives? The internal one seems to work fine and has for over a week, even though it still says there was a S.M.A.R.T. failure. When Disk Utility says there was a hardware failure, it prevents me from running the verify/repair functions. Is it possible that the external drive failure was somehow attributed to the internal drive?
I think it is also strange that when I run the Disk Utility using firewire target, the internal hard drive tests fine.
    The message I get is:
"This drive reported a fatal hardware error to disk utility. If the drive has not failed completely, back up as much data as you can and then replace it with a working drive."
and at the bottom it says:
    "S.M.A.R.T. status: failing"
Meanwhile it works just fine and my other external drive has failed altogether.
I normally wouldn't question this error message, but the fact that the other drive failed more completely at around the same time, and that the error message doesn't show up when I run the disk utility on the internal drive via firewire makes me wonder if there are other factors. It's also just frustrating that I may need to replace both.
Other things I have done is run the Apple Hardware Test, and everything passed. I also tried a PMU reset, and that didn't help.
Should I just replace the internal hard drive or should I look for other problems?
I appreciate any advice on this.

I'm not aware of any firmware update for the PPC minis - I've not had any with either of my own that I recall.
Of course future reliability is something you can never really check or fully assess, but the fact the system passes the hardware test tells us that the components which could have been responsible and which are not fairly easy to replace (the logic board, disk controller, PMU are all healthy. RAM could be a problem because the hardware test is not all that capable at revealing RAM issues, but it is also not likely to be the cause of this kind of problem. The PSU is obviously suspect to some degree, but is also replaceable.
While it's not common to suffer multiple drive failures, the fact one was active and the other could easily have been paging would account for the result if either failed in that situation. Bad luck and not easy to reproduce if you tried, but not inconceivable.
The fact that the internal rendered up your files while in FW target disk mode tends to indicate that the reason it wouldn't boot from that drive was not that the drive itself was trashed, but that the drive crashed during use - a circumstance which often creates catalog and file problems, and can certainly cause the system to fail in locating the MacOS install to boot from. In that situation, unless there is physical damage to the drive, it typically can be re-used with a reformat and reinstall, since of course that corrects the kind of catalog/file issues that this sort of crash typically causes. It would be expected to report 'verified' for SMART status though.
There are a few reasons why a damaged external might not appear in Disk Utility, or refuse to mount, some of which are broad;ly similar - a crash causing file or catalog issues. The fact it was FAT32 would complicate the matter to a small degree since if the allocation tables weren't visible to the Mac due to corruption, the system wouldn't have any way to mount the drive. That said, while it would likely be visible to a PC, and may even render up files in data recovery, it wouldn't be reusable itself without a reformat, and could well produce I/O errors in the process. It would usually be amenable to reformatting though it might also need repartitioning depending on the damage done. The overheating you mention may be an indicator of a fault, or it may be that the drive is being pushed to all 3 read attempts with each data block - that would cause it to work very hard! If you have rescue the data you think you can get off it, I'd suggest you try a reformat. If that fails, use a utility such as FDISK to delete all the partitions and recreate them, then try formatting again.
In terms of iTunes, any version will work, including 7.6. If music is stored on the external and that is USB connected, that would count for some speed impediment since iTunes is fairly cpu intensive, and the USB bus is also highly variable in performance, depending on CPU activity. But no, there is nothing in the latest version of iTunes that would cause a PPC to suffer such performance problems in itself, so you can use that quite safely. All are very cautious about this aspect of software design, since updates are often released to deal with stability or security issues, and must be usable for everyone.

As of June 2010 I no longer maintain this FAQ. I’ve migrated to Lightroom 3, which I use for all my organizing and most of my editing (I still use the Photoshop Elements Editor for more involved editing).  Adobe has clearly decided not to invest sufficient resources for properly maintaining the Photoshop Elements Organizer– see my Amazon review of PSE 8. Lightroom is marketed to professionals and prosumers with tens of thousands of photos who demand adequate organizational capabilities, whereas Photoshop Elements is marketed to consumers, most of whom do not want or use the Organizer.
This page captures my answers to frequent questions about Photoshop Elements 6, 7, and 8 (Windows).  It’s mostly about the Organizer, since I know the Organizer much better than the Editor.
The versions to which each FAQ applies are indicated with the notation [PSE 6, 7, 8]. If I’m not sure whether something applies to a version, it will be indicated with a question mark, e.g. [PSE 7, 8?].
