Can i configure each ethernet port to fixed and auto ip adresses?

Hi, i will be using a SSL Matrix Controller with Logic 9. This connects thru ethernet and requires a FIXED address. However, this Mac also needs to connect to the internet which doesnt use a fixed a address. Can I keep port one the way it is, and configure port two as fixed and have them both work properly? Are they completely independent of each ther?
Thx

Do you use a Router that you control?
If so, you can have fixed addresses easily -- just assign an address Manually that is in the same range, but above or below the ones your Router is likely to pass out automatically.
You can also assign a manual address to the second Ethernet port, but using it this way is complex. What does the device maker recommend?

Can I use the ethernet port on the ATV to connect my blue ray p[layer to the internet using the ATV as a wireless card??
    If so how??

I might be next in line on the airport extreme! Right now wireless is working better since the latest upgrade to iTunes, but hardwire is the way to go. Only problem is that ISP connections is in my office and my Home Media is downstairs. I was thinking of setting the Airport Extreme as a repeater in order to access ISP and then used the ports in the back for iTunes and ATV.

Can I use the Ethernet Port  of the A1264 Airport Express to connect to the Ethernet port of a computer that does not have wireless capability when the Airport Express is also used on a wireless network with an Airport Extreme 5th generation as the access point for the network?

Various computers, printers and hubs for the network
    Is this possible to do?

Bob, Thanks for the info. I have read different articles that said yes, but I wanted to make sure before I commit to buy. I have an older A1084 which I could not use the Ethernet port. I know at one point I was able to when I was on 10.4. Now that I am on an Intel processor and 10.8 I am going to have to upgrade some of my Apple wireless hardware.
    Thanks Again.

  • Using separate ethernet ports for LAN and internet

    Following scenario:
A couple of Lion clients and a Lion server connected to a switch. Switch connected to router for internet access. All devices, clients, server and router are in the same C-Class net.
I'd like to connect the Lion server with 2 ethernet ports to the switch, so that one port is solely used for connections to the Lion clients (aka LAN) and the other port is solely used for connections to the internet. That way heavy LAN traffic to/from the server cannot bog down internet access to the server. Any ideas how to acomplish that?
Usually you would configure the Lion server as a router and connect the Lion clients (via a switch) to one port and the cable modem to the other, so both ports are in different subnets. But I don't want all internet traffic from the clients going through the Lion server.
The best I've come up so far was to configure both ethernet ports with static IP addresses. The one connecting to the clients with a 255.255.255.0 netmask but no router IP given. The one for internet with a 255.255.255.255 netmask and the router IP set to my physical router IP. It seems to work, but I'm not sure, whether this is the suggested way to do such a setup.
Maybe some manual editing of the routing table is are more solid solution?
    Any tips appreciated.
    Pete

What you want to do can be done but maybe not the way you are trying.
First yes, you would use two Etherner ports on the Mac, if it is a Mac Pro or XServe it has two built-in, other Mac models can do this using a USB Ethernet interface.
Next, the way I would normally do this is to have a separate switch for the WAN router, this would make the setup look like the following
LAN Switch ----- Server ------------ Router --- Internet
           | |                             |
           | |                            NAT
           | +-----------------------------+
           |
           +------ Client Devices
The router could be doing NAT via one interface, or a separate Firewall box could do the NAT.
Another possible way would involve segmenting the lan switch by setting up a VLAN and putting one port for the Servers second Ethernet connection on to that VLAN (using public IP addresses and the a connection to the router on that VLAN, the LAN switch could then route between the two VLANs. Cheaper LAN switches do not have this ability.

  • Can I have duplicate ethernet ports with different proxies in my automatic location?

Hello.  I use my personal MacBook Pro on a corporate network and at home, on the road, etc.  Outside of work, I use ethernet, WiFi, and iPhone/USB depending on the situation.  I have those configurations set up in an automatic location and they work fine.  At work, I always connect via ethernet.  Our corporate network requires some arcane proxy settings, that don't work when I am away from the office.  Currently, I use a separate location for work, but I am lazy and also like things to work elegantly, so I would rather have this work automatically.  I have been able to create two Ethernet ports in my automatic location, but I can't find a way to get the higher priority port to "fail" if it is the wrong location.   Is there any way to do what I want automatically?
    Thank you.

You might consider utilities such as
    MarcoPolo
    Location X
    Airport Location Utility
    Locamatic
    LocationChanger
    etc...
Which can change your location based on the local network information, assuming there is something about the different network characteristics the utilities can detect.

  • Can I activate the ethernet ports (routing) of Time Capsule "joining" an existing non-Apple wireless network ?

    Hello,
I have a DSL modem that is also a WIFI router as my main WIFI network from room A. In room B, I have a TC wirelessly joining the existing WIFI network (not creating a new one). That works fine, I have one SSID, and I can wirelessly access the TC disks and backup my Mac on my TC.
Now, I would like to connect a wired device (with on WIFI) to the ethernet port of my TC. Unfortunately, the ethernet ports of the TC don't seem to be "activated" as they do not have internet on them.
More precisely, I'd like to connect a GE Cordless Skype Phone Model# 31591 (http://www.gephones.com/products/skype/dect-6-0-expandable-digital-cordless-phon e-with-skypetm.html) that connects to a router via Ethernet. I'm aware that I could simply connect it to the DLS router, but that's not what I want... Is there any way to activate the ethernet ports of the TC while in "join" mode ? Or do I really have to buy a Airport Express to create my main network and then extend it ?!?

Thanks, the reason why I asked again, is because you told me to start another thread with the specifics of the device I want to connect, so I did
Not a big deal, and it is easy to become confused.....but to be clear about this
    Your question.....
is there a way I can connect my Bluray player to the TC ?
    My Answer.....
Please start a new post for that. Tell us the make and model number of the player and whether you plan to connect using wireless or Ethernet.
so I tried to creat the main WIFI network with a first-generation Airport Express M9470LL/A (802.11b/g, no "draft N" or "n" support) and the TC wouldn't extend it either, is it too old/not supported
Unfortunately, the "extend" setup will only work with "n" devices.  The older Express does not have a setting to "Allow this network to be extended", so the Time Capsule cannot pick up the signal.
I'm not sure what else to suggest other than what I already have.  I'm assuming that you do not want to buy another new Airport Express.

  • Can't configure both WAN ports on 1811 with SDM

    Hi,
We recently procured an 1811 router to replace a SOHO linksys at a store we service. We needed redundant WAN interfaces to use the DSL as a backup to the main cable connection, and a Linksys RV082, while doing the job when it actually worked, died repeatedly. We decided after looking at the 1811's feature set to just get the Cisco and be done with it and not monkey with SOHO gear anymore.
Where I'm having difficulty is SDM won't let me configure both WAN interfaces from the GUI, it only allows me to configure one. I have it configured, and the router is working nicely in the test lab but I need to get that other interface configured and failover enabled before I can put this thing into production.
What am I doing wrong? Do I need to suck it up and learn IOS?
    Thanks,
    Todd Phipps
    Certco, Inc.

I ended up figuring out the IOS commands to enable one fastethernet port as a primary and the other one as a backup (running both cable and DSL for redundancy; it's a grocery store that runs electronic transactions over IP so 100% availability is a must).
The trouble I was running into in SDM is that while it would allow me to configure one WAN port through the GUI, the config options for the second one were grayed out. Now that both are configured through IOS the edit buttons for both WAN interfaces appear normally in SDM. It's almost as if Cisco didn't want users to be able to configure both interfaces graphically for initial setup.
Now just to test it at the site before the store opens to see if the failover works...

  • Can you configure a static port to use with certsrv.msc?

I am trying to use certsrv.msc to connect from my workstation to the CA for administration purposes.  Workstation is Win7, CA is 2008 R2 Enterprise running Enterprise Subordinate on a dedicated box.
I configured a static DCOM port for certsvc by following this article, including bouncing the service and also rebooting the CA box:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/1559.how-to-configure-a-static-dcom-port-for-ad-cs.aspx
The static port was opened in the firewall from my workstation to the CA.  We also found that TCP 445 was required, so that has been opened as well, port 135 & other ports normally needed for autoenrollment should be open.  Sniffing the firewall
showed that a random high numbered port that is not the static dcom port is being attempted - this is the only port showing dropped packets & no traffic on the static port.
I am wondering if there is a way to configure a static port for this high-level random port to use with certsrv.msc as I was able to do with the certsvc dcom port?  I am trying to avoid having tens of thousands of network ports wide open going to my
    CA...  Thanks in advance!

    Hi Steve,
I am sorry that I wasn’t able to find references about restricting certificate services only use one port in the random port range.
However, we can configure RPC dynamic ports allocation to restrict port range. In the meantime, we should keep at least 100 ports open to keep necessary system services running.

  • Can the number of ethernet ports be increased from 3?

Clearly I know that we cant weld another port onto the airport extreme but, I have 5 devices I need to run through the wireless network and the box only has 3. Is there any way to increase this number with perhaps a splitter or some add on device? All 5 will never be active at the same time but, the thought of having to go behind the port daily and swap out cables is not an option. THX

Will the ports enabled by this product also be capable of "n" speeds if I purchase the new N router?
Sounds like you got wireless and wired a bit mixed up. The Ethernet (wired) ports on the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) are rated at 10/100 Mbps. The AEBS's wireless is 802.11a/b/g/(pre-n)-compliant...meaning that theoretically it can handle speeds from 11 Mbps to 540 Mbps.
Adding an Ethernet switch to one of the AEBS's 10/100 Mbps Ethernet ports, will only provide 10/100 Mbps throughput, not 802.11n speeds.
Anything that is a little more aesthetically pleasing than that big blue box? Anyone else make such a device?
Linksys has several other models, as well as, Belkin, D-Link, & Netgear (to name a few).

  • Bent Aluminum Around Ethernet Port. Fix?

I recently dropped my phone (less than 1 foot drop) on the side of my MacBook Pro and was surprised to learn that the aluminum on top of the Ethernet port was bent (a noticeable bend). I am wondering what are my options about fixing this cosmetic problem?

The best option if the damage is purely cosmetic is to ignore it. If you need to get it fixed in order to use your ethernet port, you'll have to pay for a new top case, to the tune of several hundred dollars.

  • I can not use the Ethernet Port to connect another device.  My Airport Express allowed me to do this.

I want to use the Ethernet Port for my Apply TV for another device (Direct TV box), but it doesn't work.  I have Airport Express with an Ethernet port and I was able to plug my Direct TV box to download.

It's not designed to extend a network, and plugging in ethernet disables wi-fi in any case.

  • Time Capsule seen by AirPort Utility, but can't configure (direct Ethernet connection)

Everything started with a Time Machine error stating that the Sparse Image was not able to be created - support document guided me to check machine name, which for whatever reason had a "(2)" after it.  I edited the name back to the original name without the "(2)", but it made no difference.  Tried restarting the TC, and when it came back up it showed a yellow indicator in AirPort Utility, stating that the TC Disk had errors.  Followed another article saying to erase the disk, and start over.  I initiated the erase, which quickly got to the message "finishing erase...", or the like, and just stayed there for more than 10 minutes.  There was no option to cancel or quit.  Finally gave up and pulled power on TC.  After restarting, and Green indicator came back on, the wireless network was working, but I could no longer get into configure from within AirPort Utility - the operation would just time out after a few minutes with a message saying to make sure it was in range (even though I am connected via Ethernet cable directly to TC).  After trying to disconnect a few more times with no change, and a soft reset did not change anything, I performed a Factory Reset (pulled plug, depressed and held reset button, plugged back in and waited for rapid flashing yellow indicator, released).  Upon Factory Reset the TC again showed up in AirPort Utility with the default name, but again I was unable to configure - same error.  Now networking and wireless still "works", but of course everything is back to defaults, and wide open.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your support!
    Jeff

Ok - had to wait until I was back at the location that has this Time Capsule to try your suggestion.  I unplugged the TC for over an hour, then plugged everything back in, and waited for it to show up in AirPort Utility again (TC showing a slow flashing yellow indicator - remember, I have already tried to do a factory reset, or hard reset before my original post).  I depressed the reset button and held it for more than 30 seconds, with no change to the flashing indicator, and nothing changed when I released it either.  I again tried a hard reset by unplugging the TC, (wait a bit), and depressing/holding the reset button, and plugging it back in again.  Soon after that, I get the quick flashing yellow indicator.  Since I didn't get very far with this last week, I continued to hold reset button, and after about 30 seconds it stopped flashing altogether, and stayed off.  I then released the reset button, and the TC restarted, and showed up in AirPort Utility again, but still am unable to go into configure it - it just times out trying to connect, and give the same message:
"An error occurred while reading the configuration. Make sure your AirPort wireless device is plugged in, and in range of your computer or connected via Ethernet and try again. (-6753)"
I'm going to take the TC with me this time, and take it to an Apple store, I just know that they are going to say it's dead, and would like to know that I have tried everything else before hand.
Thanks for your advice, and it you (or anyone else) have any further suggestions, please let me know - it is greatly appreciated.
    Take care!
    Jeff
