Can I connect a network storage device to Airport Extreme or Express?

I have a wireless network with an Airport Extreme base station and 2 Airport Express network extenders and would like to add a network storage device to the network so our whole family can access it for backups and storage.
Can I connect a USB or etherent storage device(hard drive) to one of the ports on the extreme or express and have it show up on all of our desktops like our printers do?
If not--Is there another to accomplish what I need?
Thanks!

You can ethernet storage, but not USB storage.

  • Can I connect my Linksys WRT160N V3 with Airport Extreme via ethernet cable?

I have a Linksys WRT160N V3 router (Living Room) to my cable modem but the wifi does not reach certain spots in the house where its necessary.  If I buy a Airport Extreme and place it in my bedroom and connect it with an ethernet cable that I have connected with my iMac will the airport extreme work as a wifi extender since wifi does not reach my room?

Yes, the AE can be simply put in bridge mode so it will become an AP and set the wireless to create a wireless network.. you can then use same name and same security as linksys.. this is called roaming network.

Although the apple instructions have two apple routers, any two wireless routers will work the same way.

Can't connect macbook pro to internet with airport extreme

If you have ethernet still on your MBP plug it in by ethernet and tell me if that works.
Tell me how the Airport is setup.. what broadband modem and router you have.
What OS on the laptop? Yosemite I guess.. since it is the most troublesome.
Did it work before whatever change was made? Has it worked in the past? When did it stop and what did you do that coincided with it stopping?
    Upgrade to Yosemite??

  • Can't connect to wireless internet with my airport extreme card.

hello, i need some help connecting to our wireless router. i do not have an airport base station, i am trying to connect to a third-party, secure wireless network. anyway, i've called apple, i've called linksys (the router company), and i am still using hardwire connected to the router. whenever i click the airport icon on the top taskbar, no networks show up. i have had my pc laptop in the same room as my iMac G5, and the laptop can autmatically connect to the network, but my iMac cannot. i am running out of options. i connect with a secure, wireless internet. its wep, whatever that means, and i've tried my user name and passcode numerous times, but to no avail. what do i do????

thanks for your help, but sadly this did not work. even when i click the wireless airport icon on the top taskbar, no networks show up on the pull down menu. the only option i have is 'other.' shouldn't my secured network at least show up in the pull down menu, to which i provide the password?
is there any way to get this extreme card to work? has anyone else had this same problem with their iMac G5? this is ridiculous, thanks.

  • Can't connect to internet after upgrading to Airport Extreme

Wi-fi is working fine and my old PowerBook G4 connects through the wireless system just fine. On the Airport Utilities App on the iPad it shows green lights for both the Airport Extreme and the Airport Express but shows a gold light for the internet icon (which also says disconnected from the internet).

You may also want to rest your network settings. Go to Settings/General/Reset/Reset All Network Settings.

  • Can't connect to a VPN server via Airport Extreme Base Station

My husband is unable to connect to his employer's VPN server through our Airport Extreme when he uses his work PC at home. Strangely, when we had a Dell True Mobile wireless router this was not an issue. He could reach his VPN server via PC, AND our Mac wireless network also worked thru the Dell True Mobile. Is there any way to configure the AEBS to allow VPN connectivity? Do we need to switch to a different brand of wireless router? Please advise.

    First welcome to the discussions.
To set up the client you'll first have to ask the Network Administrator for the name of the VPN server. The username and other details you will need to log on.
You will also need to find out if the VPN uses PPTP or L2TP over IP Sec. with that information in hand open Internet connect in the Applications folder choose NEW VPN Connection then you click on either PPTP or L2TP whichever the network uses, then click continue in the confiquration pop up menu, Choose Edit confiqurations Then enter the information the Network administrator gave you.
Bear in mind that the OSX client does not work with all VPN's.
You may have to purchase a universal VPN client such as VPN Tracker from Equinux ($90.00).

  • Can not connect to the internet with an airport extreme,

Here is the setup. Motorola modem to airport extreme. Laptop and desktops all have airport cards installed. Cable provider is comcast. Here is the problem. Using the airport extreme, I can not get my homepage. All I get is a help page. If I disconnect the airport and hook up my old d-link wireless router, everything is fine. Called apple support, what a joke. they won't help until I pay another $100.00 bucks for applecare. Comcast says it is an apple problem. the thing that tweaks me the most is that I just shelled out $210.00 for a router that I can't get any support on. What a joke . Aside from my dissatisfaction with apple, anybody think they can help?

hello, i have had this problem twice with comcast. Once when i set up a new service in a new address and once when they confused my old servicewith my new service. This is both an Apple problem and a Comcast problem no matter what they say. I found after talking to both Apple and Comcast, that the easiest solution was to #1 make sure you have the latest firmware version for your airport. #2 unplug both modem and Airport. Wait a while then plug modem in first,, let it cycle, plug in Airport, let it cyce, then reboot your computer. If that failes try a soft reset of your airport base station by pushing the little button in the back. If that all failes call comcast and make sure your account isnt in a "regestration" phase. They can reset your modem from their end also. hope it helps. Good luck. They fixed my system twice so they should have no problem getting you fixed either.

  • Can I connect a wi-fi antenna with Airport Extreme?

I use my apartment's WI-FI signal to get internet using a wi-fi antenna. So basically my question is, can I simply plug in the antenna (uses a usb cable) to the airport extreme?
I tried doing just that, used my laptop to login to the airport extremem...then tried to get on the internet that way, but it doesn't work. So it appears that I need a modem attached to the airport extreme. Is my logic correct?

  • Can't connect to Xbox 360 live with Airport Extreme wirelessly

Just bought Airport Extreme and Xbox 360 slim and we are having trouble connecting wirelessly.
When testing connection on Xbox, some problems:
    - MTU setting not high enough
    - does not have assigned IP address
Been trying all day and getting frustrated.  Any help appreciated.

Unfortunately, the AirPorts do not offer a means to change MTU settings.

  • Setup a wired network  between Time Capsule, Airport Extreme and Express

I currently have a Time Capsule, Airport Extreme N and an Airport Express N. They are currently connected wirelessly via the "extend network" mode. So I do have wireless connection throughout my home but I notice that it is slow especially compared to gigabit Ethernet. I now like to do the same but then connect the three devices over Ethernet as I have on each floor also Ethernet connections available that are connected via a wired switch.
How can I configure the three devices in such a way that they use the gigabit Ethernet wired connections as their "backbone" and then give wireless access to each floor as if it is one wireless network, and where I can connect other wired gigabit devices via the time capsule and airport extreme Ethernet ports?
I have one Internet connection that comes via Ethernet from my cable modem. This is now connected to my time capsule who creates the internal network and assigns internal IP addresses.
Can anybody advise how to configure each device? And to which ethernet port I should Airport Extreme?
    Thanks
    Alexander

Welcome to the discussion area, Alexander!
+How can I configure the three devices in such a way that they use the gigabit Ethernet wired connections as their "backbone" and then give wireless access to each floor as if it is one wireless network, and where I can connect other wired gigabit devices via the time capsule and airport extreme Ethernet ports?+
You will be setting up what is known as a "roaming" network using the etherent backbone for your network. This will produce the best possible bandwidth on your network for both ethernet and wireless connections.
    _On the Time Capsule_
Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Remove the check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended" (This is only checked if you are extending your network using wireless only and you will be using ethernet to connect your devices, not wireless).
Update to save changes and the Time Capsule configuration is complete.
    _On the AirPort Extreme_
Connect an ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule to your ethernet switch. Then connect another ethernet connection from the switch to the WAN (circle icon) port on the AirPort Extreme.
Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network (Not extend as you might think. Extend is only used if the Time Capsule and AirPort Express are connecting using wireless only)
Wireless Network Name = Exact same name as your AirPort Extreme wireless network
Radio Mode = Same setting as your AirPort Extreme
    Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = Exact same setting as your AirPort Extreme wireless network
Wireless Password = Same password as your AirPort Extreme wireless
    Confirm Password
    Click the Internet icon
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Update to save changes and configuration is complete
    _On the AirPort Express_
You can connect an ethernet cable from the switch..or..from one of the LAN <-> ports on either the Time Capsule or AirPort Extreme, whichever is easier.
Set it up exactly the same as the AirPort Extreme above and update to save changes.
Power off the Time Capsule, AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express for a few moments. Then power up the Time Capsule first and let it run a moment, then power up the AirPort Extreme and then the AirPort Express.
If you have a laptop running Leopard or Snow Leopard, you can move your computer around and check to see which device it is connecting to for wireless. Hold down the option key while you click on the fan shaped AirPort icon at the top of the screen and look for the BSSID. That is the AirPort ID of the device to which you are connected at the time.
To get the AirPort ID of each of your Apple routers, open AirPort Utility and click on a device on the left. On the right, you'll see the AirPort ID for that device.
For ethernet connections, you can plug into an available port on the switch, the Time Capsule, or the AirPort Extreme.
You should be all set. Please post back on your progress.

  • Connecting Time Warner Cable DVR to Airport Extreme or Express

I have been researching this topic and can only find setups described fro Tivo and Diect Dish....I know how to connect the DVR to either but once I do how is my DVR accessed online?
For instance when i connected my printer to my Extreme id detected it automatically -- with my cable DVR I see nothing. Does my question make sense or am I not being clear?

    Welcome to the discussions!
When you connect an audio video device using an ethernet connection, the device will usually auto configure to work on the network. To do this, you would connect an ethernet cable from one of the LAN ports on your router to the ethernet connection on the DVR.
Because you are using an AirPort Express and the single port is connected to your modem, this makes things a lot more complicated. While it might be possible to configure another Express to connect to your wireless network and also connect to the DVR, the best resolution by far would be a router with 3-4 available ethernet ports like an AirPort Extreme.
You will need to check the website of your cable service provider to get the web address for their DVR service. I would guess that it has some sort of On Demand function or similar to download movies and other entertainment to your DVR. There may also be a link on the home or information page for your service.

  • Can anyone recommend an external storage device to supplement my mac book air?  I already have a time capsule but want the new device to replicate the data on that so ideally would like a device that i can connect to the time capsule through a cable.

Can anyone recommend an external storage device to supplement my mac book air?  I already have a time capsule but want the new device to replicate the data on that so ideally would like a device that i can connect to the time capsule through a cable.

    Hi CJR
I'm not sure how Time Capsule can be replicated onto your external drive but there is a USB port on the back of TC that can be hooked up to any recent external drive.
Another thing to think about , besides a Time Capsule failure, is the theft of your Time Capsule, so it might be a good idea to consider separating any redundant back-up from your Time Capsule or both my be stolen.
TC will back up until full and then begin deleting the oldest back-ups.  Mine is a 2TB Time capsule.
My back-up plan is as follows:
    1.  Macbook Air back-up on Time Capsule though Time Machine backs up everything - I think it's about every 30 min or so.
    2.  Contacts, reminders, appointments, notes, email are backed up through iCloud.
    3.  iTunes and non-itunes purchased music is on iMatch (and no need to back-up) and any non-iTunes music is backed up on an HP external drive (in case Time Capsule dies)
    4.  Photos are on my MacBook Air and are backed up on my HP external drive.
    5.  Office documents (Excel, Powerpoint, Access etc) are stored in a Skydrive app (like iCloud) and Skydrive syncs these docuemnts with the MS  cloud and my old PC and does not alter their native format like storing in iCloud would do.
    Cheers

  • I already have a hard drive connected to my airport extreme, and ws wondering if i could use it as a network storage device

I already have a hard drive connected to my airport extreme, and ws wondering if i could use it as a network storage device. If so would I have to format it with two partitions , one for time machine and the other for network storage. Aprreciate any advice

If you have the hard drive connected to the AirPort Extreme....it is a network storage device.
One issue that you may want to think about is that Apple does not support Time Machine backups to a hard drive at the USB port at the AirPort Extreme.
In spite of this, some users who try this are able to make it work. Others have some limited success and some have no success.
It's not supported....so there will be no help from Apple in the event of problems.
If you decide to proceed with this, make sure that the partition for Time Machine backups is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as other formats will not work with Time Machine.
Having a secondary backup plan would also be something that you might want to consider.

  • Can I share photos on networked storage device with windows user?

Ok, so I have done my research and feel kinda confidant about moving iPhoto Library to external hard drive. However my windows using husband now wants to know if there is a way he can see them too, as I have pics/videos he does not. Also is there a way to organize the photos from his computer on ExHD so I could see them in iPhoto?
I am scared to death that he is going to get into my Library file (even on accident) and jack something up to the point that I lose all my pictures, or the ability to access them, etc...
We would like to be able to share music as well, would same principles apply? Any suggestions?
ExHD is networked between the two computers if that makes any difference.?

What format is that networked storage device?
Users report many problems with Libraries that are stored on disks formatted anything except Mac OS Extended (Journaled) - these include problems importing, sharing and saving edits.
iPhoto has no cross platform ability whatever. The best you might do is to use a Referenced Library but this has problems too, so research that carefully.
Best option: tell your husband to get a Mac.
    Regards
    TD
