Can i connect an airport extreme (us version) with a new airport express (euro version) ?

Hi, I lived in the USA for a while and moved back to Europe.
I have an airport extreme (US purchased) which i would like to link with a new airport express (EURO purchased) in order to extent my network.
Is this possible ?
I have multiple problems doing so, which leads me to believe the US and EURO product might not be compatible.
Thx for your kind assistance, G.

Connecting routers wirelessly to extend a wireless network is known as a Wireless Distribution System (WDS). Although AirPorts can extend other AirPorts in a WDS, they only work with a few non-AirPort ones...like some Linksys models.
Here are a few articles on the subject:

Another option, although maybe not as practical in your circumstance, is to connect the AirPort base directly using an Ethernet cable to the Linksys. Then setting up the AirPort as a bridge.

  • Can I add a WiFi printer through WPS with the new AirPort Extreme and AirPort Utility 6.3?

It says here that AirPort Utility 6.2 supports WPS-capable WiFi printers, but on the new AirPort Extreme techs pecs Apple insists that the way printing is shared is by connecting the printer to the AirPort Extreme with a USB cable, which really defeats the whole purpose of WiFi printing doesn't it?
Does the new Airport Extreme support WPS-capable printing? Does AirPort Utility 6.3 support it?

  • I cannot get my AirPort Extreme to work with my new BT fibre modem which has replaced my Draytek modem.

I use to use a Draytec modem with my AirPort Extreme. All worked perfectly and the internet connection was configured as connect using PPPoE. Now I have a replacement mode fro BT to allow a fibre connection I can no onager get on the internet. What do I need to change. Do I need to change the internet connection on the AirPort Extreme to DHCP.

Yes, I do think it is no longer using PPPoE.. but the IP is configured to the fibre to ethenet or vdsl port.
You might need to ring the ISP and get them to give you details.
Anyway it is easy to try.. plug the Extreme WAN port to the new modem and test with dhpc. Check that you get a public not private IP address.

  • How can I connect my iphone to my computer with the new upgrades? My mac (old) cannot support the new itunes and my phone can't connect to it.

I have a macbook that I purchased in 2007 with operating system Mac OS X Version 10.5.8. I recently did the new software upgrade on my iPhone and now my iPhone and my computer cannot connect. I tried downloading the newest iTunes but it is not supported by my software. What can I do now? (Other than buy a new computer).

Is the new iTunes library on a different computer, or the same computer?
Are you concerned about photos that you have taken with the iPhone in the Camera Roll, or photos you have synced to the iPhone from your computer?
Contacts should be configured to sync with an app on your computer. You set this up in iTunes on the Info tab with the iPhone connected. You will not lose any contacts if the app on your computer has at least one contact.

  • How do I replace my AirPort Extreme Time Capsule with a new one?

I'm having issues setting up my new time capsule. I currently have the first gen time capsule and I'm having difficulty setting up the new one. The system is not recognizing the new one. What do I need to do??

You must use the latest utility 6.3 in the lion/mountain lion OS.. You must turn on ipv6 local link.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4597
If you are trying to do it over wireless.. reset to factory and start over.. the new unit must be at factory settings to work with the utility.
IMHO use ethernet.. it is far superior.. You don't have to use it once it is setup.
But the setup will go easier with hard wired connection.

  • How Can i connect using Thunderbolt a Macbook Pro with the New iMac

I bought the new Macbook Pro with Thunderbolt and instead of buying a new external monitor, i am thinking that the new iMac with Thunderbolt is a great idea.
Is there a cable to connect the Macbook Pro and use as iMac as external monitor, using Thunderbolt.
    thanks

I understood your question perfectly and the answer is absolutely yes. When you change the iMac into target display mode you underlying operating system continues to run all existing applications. For example in my case if I finished editing some video and am about to enter a lengthy render process or something which may draw lots of resources like hand real, I set it to start on the iMac and then switch it to target display mode to use it as a monitor with my MacBook air in the meantime.
Only one small caveat in your case though.  Since the target display mode is a feature of OSX (eg the OS interprets the special key stroke and changes the iMac into target display mode) you should make sure Lion server supports the target display mode feature. I don't see a reason why it wouldn't but that's the only thing currently crossing my mind. Keep in mind the compatibilities between ports as noted in my blog. If any of your machines have mini display port and you intend to connect the new iMac in target display mode you will run into issues. In that special scenario, I recommend buying a refurb iMac from 2010 which urtilize the displayport allowing you to use it as a display for all your macs -- those with thunderbolt as well as those with displayport. If you have thunderbolts then definitely go with the thunderbolt iMac.

  • Can I use my 2010 AirPort Extreme as a range extender with a new AirPort Extreme?

I want to use an existing AirPort Extreme (2010 model) with a new AirPort Extreme to extend the range and signal strength into a shop. They are different designations, one n and the other ac. Are they compatible. I need to know before I buy the new router.

The new AirPort Extreme will provide an ac,n,g,b compatible wireless signal.
The existing AirPort Extreme can be configured to extend the n,g,b signal, but it cannot extend the ac signal.

The problem is not the router.. the issue is the vpn has put your computer in a different IP range with a different gateway. When you turn off the vpn the computer returns to local lan and can print.
Some vpn software allows you to set gateway to use local net instead of remote gateway or access to other webistes or local lan.
    Read up the issue.

    Cisco vpn client..
    https://supportforums.cisco.com/thread/239113
I did not search much.. just grabbed the first article I could find that explains the issue.
The whole point of the vpn is whilst it is connected your computer is NOT part of the Local Lan .. it is part of the Remote LAN via the vpn tunnel.
It is also a security risk using split tunnelling so often it will not be allowed.
Plug the printer directly into the computer via usb or whatever.. Local connection will work.. not local lan.

I have Airport Extreme as the base unit and an Express unit in a room separated by a brick wall to improve signal. Express shows a green light indicating signal but my iPad does not perform well. How can I improve other than hardwire ethernet connection?

Other suggestions, and more info about the nature of the problem, may be in this Apple tech note.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1365
For example, you might find that the brick wall is not the only problem. There may be other devices pumping out enough wireless interference to be making things even worse.
I agree with Bob Timmons that Ethernet is best and most reliable. And that powerline (which I use) is easier and potentially faster than wireless...but only if your power lines do not have electrical devices plugged in which produce electrical noise on the line. Powerline will be slower than Gigabit Ethernet.
Ethernet cable is the only way to ensure that the signal goes directly there in a shielded way for a clear fast signal. Wireless and powerline are much slower because of all the other things the signal has to fight past to get to the other device.

  • Can I connect my AirMac Extreme like this? (It doesn't seem to work)

Is this the right discussion area? I couldn't find one titled "AirMac Extreme".
Anyway, I got an AirMac Extreme the other day and want to connect it via ethernet to my existing non-wireless router, set a fixed IP address manually (like I do with my iMac, since I have 8 fixed IP addresses) and then use it to provide DHCP services to wireless computers at home (like I do now with Internet sharing from my iMac G5).
First my MBP just couldn't see the base station at all - even though my iMac G5 and PBG4 could. After 2 hours on the phone with Apple they suggested changing the channel. When I changed it to 9 then at least my MBP could see the Base Station and I could set it up with the new Airport Utility. (I am curious why the MBP couldn't see it until I changed the channel while my other two Macs could...)
After I changed the channel and set it up, I can connect to the network I create.
But I can't connect to the Internet.
Apple support was friendly friendly, but the guy seemed sort of clueless. The manual seems to indicate that I can do that sort of setup, but I can't get it to work.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    doug

    Is
this the right discussion area? I couldn't find one
    titled "AirMac Extreme".
"AirMac" is the term Apple uses in Japan for
"AirPort". You are in the correct area.
Well, that explains that mystery. I live in Tokyo and bought my AirMac Extreme at Yodobashi Camera in Shinjuku.
When I changed it to 9 then at least my MBP
could see the Base Station and I could set it up with
the new Airport Utility. (I am curious why the MBP
couldn't see it until I changed the channel while my
    other two Macs could...)
If your MacBook Pro was a US model, it can only use
channels 1 to 11. Japanese Mac models can
use channels 1 to 14. When the AirPort
Extreme base station (AEBS) is set to automatic
channel selection it tends to pick a high channel. If
the AEBS was a Japanese model it probably picked
    channel 14.
And another mystery. I bought my MBP from the U.S. Apple Store while in the U.S. in December. I wonder why the US models have less channels.
The manual seems to indicate that I can do
that sort of setup, but I can't get it to
    work.
The setup you describe sounds fine and should
    work.
Do you have any type of MAC
address filtering (access control) enabled on your
non-wireless router? If so, you need to add the
Ethernet MAC address of the AEBS to the list of
    allowed clients.
Since you are using fixed IP
addresses, does your ISP record the MAC addresses of
allowed computers? If so, you need to add the
Ethernet MAC address of the AEBS to the list of
    allowed clients.
    Since you didn't elaborate
much on the failure, it is possible that it is a DNS
issue. To determine this, use the information in KB 106798, Mac OS: Troubleshooting "A
connection failure has occurred", "The specified
server could not be found" or Similar
    Messages.
My ISP does not record the MAC addresses of allowed computers. I've re-used some of these fixed IP addresses before with different computers over the last few years.
There is no MAC address filtering on the non-wireless router.
I tried manually adding the DNS server IP addresses to the setup, so that didn't help. Also, in terminal, I couldn't ping an address, and that doesn't make use of the DNS anyway.
I think it must be the setup itself. There are various options I'm not familiar with. Should I have the "bridge off" set or should it be set to "distribute IP addresses", etc...
    Thanks!

What ADSL modem do you advise to use with my new airport extreme? I have tried a basic TP-Link ADSL2+  modem and I can't get the configuration working. What modem does Apple recommend?

Ok well I have looked around some more and have found this to be the most up to date official response to my question as seen at this link here:
    http://www.actiontec.com/support/product_details.php?pid=41#q27
Can I Bridge the Actiontec MI424WR router that Verizon provided, when I signed up for FiOS service?
The MI424WR does not have a bridging option, and neither Verizon nor Actiontec support attempting to bridge it.
The desire to bridge the MI424WR is based on a misunderstanding that it is a modem as well as a router. Actiontec does produce DSL Gateways that have a Transparent-Bridging option, which bypasses or disables the router function and allows the Gateway to act simply as a DSL modem, when it is enabled. Many consumers do not realize that with FiOS, the ONT (typically outside the home) is the device that handles changing the FiOS signal from Fiber to either Ethernet or Coax, and that the Router is just a Router, and if it was bridged or bypassed, it would be a device without a function. For most Verizon FiOS customers their service would completely stop if the MI424WR was bridged, because the Video on Demand service is dependent on it to work.
If your ONT is connected to the Actiontec MI424WR router via Coax, the MI424WR is required due to the Coax connection. But if the ONT is connected to the MI424WR via Ethernet, then in most cases some other router can be substituted for the MI424WR, and it can be removed."
So it looks like I will be calling Verizon support to see about getting the Ethernet connection installed and getting another modem...

  • Can an airport extreme base station attached to another airport extreme base station as an extender transmit a different network name and have it's own security?

Can an airport extreme base station attached to another airport extreme base station set up as an extender transmit a different network name and have it's own security?

No. The AirPort cannot extend another AirPort's wireless network and simultaneously broadcast its own wireless network.
It can however, be connected to another router (including another AirPort) by Ethernet, and then, be configured to broadcast a wireless network with another Network Name and Security Type.
