  • Can I Install Tiger with an exterinal USB DVD Drive??

    Hi,
I've accuired a couple iMacs that are currently running Mac OS 9, but are fast enough to run Tiger. The problem is they only have built in CD drives. Rather than going out to find several internal iMac DVD drives, could I buy one exterinal USB DVD drive to install Tiger?
    Thanks!

What happens if the firmware isn't updated?
The display may stop working, even for OS 9. It is not easy to fix.
I just installed 10.2 on one of them and it seems to be working. Should I uninstall it and upgrade the firmware and start over?
Check the "Boot ROM version" with System profiler. If the firmware is updated it will be 4.1.9
It is not necessary to remove OSX to install the updates if OS 9 is still on the hard drive. If not, and the OS 9 drivers are there, OS 9 can be installed without affecting OSX.
The update won't install if it is not needed.

  • Can I install Leopard from an external USB DVD drive?

I am trying to install Leopard onto an older PB G4 whose internal drive is shot. I have an external Pioneer USB 2 drive attached, but when the Leopard Installer prompts me to restart, the installer doesn't kick in and the computer restarts into basic OSX. I've tried to choose the Installer DVD via System Preferences "Start-up Disk" pane, but it doesn't show up. The DVD drive does have its own AC power source.
Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Mac OS X will only boot PowerPCs with Firewire, not with USB. That's the reason it doesn't work.

  • Dear Community, how can I connect SCSI tape recorder via USB to iMac ? Is there any adapter/converter on the market now ? Cheers, Marek

    Dear Community,
how can I connect SCSI tape recorder via USB to iMac ?
Is there any adapter/converter on the market now ?
    Cheers, Marek

    Thanks Jan.
Actually the reason to use Quantum SCSI tape recorder is to back-up big amount of data (propriety movies footage) both on PC (what is quite easy, using SCSII host adapter with VHDCI 68 connector) and iMac what seems to be not easy. All my search by Google leads to that conclussion, they finished production of SCSI-to-USB or FireWire because somebody stopped to produce chips to covert protocols. So even buying noe second-hand adapter, no guaranty it's still working with Lion (nobody is developing drivers anymore). Strange is, nobody or just a few are using SCSII (Ultra 320) devices (while the transfer is not bad, 320 MBps what is 2560 Mbps, so the only limitation is tape recording (some 80 MBps) not an interface. Using compression mode I can (and I do) record 1,6 TB of footage data. However quite slow, is safe and cheap, comparing with any HD storage solution. USB 2 is much more limited.
I'm using Time Capsule for buck-up. But even 3 TB one day will be full of data, then old back-ups will be eaten by new once, what is not good idea for archives. I'm using another 2TB NAS HD (2x2TB RAID 1), but this is also going to be full soon.
Of course, you are right, the option is another machine (OSX,Win,Linux or Solaris) equipped with SCSII controller. But this requires another machine, just for back-up time to time, and in practice iMac folders must be shared with that small auxiliary machine because amount of data practically excluding even temporary data collection on auxiliary machine. And it must be transfer by wire, not WIFI, my only network. Tape recording is in my case really good, professional solution, isn't it?
Anyway, if somebody has similar requirements as me, and found the solution for SCSI, please let me know. So far, follow Jan's idea, I'm thinking about some embeded mini PC, fanless, equipped with slot for SCSI, with SOME smart system on-board, to deal with iMac for type recording. The option is previous Apple model, but to be honest, I became Mac/OSX user 4 years ago. I fell in love with Mac, but my knowledge about previous models is based on Google....
My desk becomes full of boxes. Do you know how big Quantum TC-L42BX is ? Is very big. And now another box.....another keyboard....another screen... And one small adapter could solve the problem. Eh....
    Best regards,
    Marek

  • How can i connect 24VDC to digital input (usb 6008)

    hello,
how can i connect 24VDC to digital input (usb 6008), is it possible with some optocoupler?
    thanks

The 6008 is a static DIO, so speed shouldn't be an issue.  Therefore an optocoupler should work.  Just make sure you get one the meets your specs.
There are only two ways to tell somebody thanks: Kudos and Marked Solutions

Can I connect my cable box to my 2011 iMac

If you are setting up to use Wi Fi connect the Ethernet cable to the cable box then to the router.
Some companies like Comcast have online manuals available online for instructions. Check your cable company's web site. The manuals should be available in PDF format.

  • Hard drive freezes, can no longer be accessed. running off USB hard drive..

Here is a good one for you. My 15 month old MacBook suddenly froze and died while watching a movie (had seen the movie before). Hard drive would not mount anymore, so in order to run at all I had to reinstall Tiger on my 40 GB USB memory as a last resort. Running fine, mind you.
Guessed I was unlucky and got a poor Seagate hard drive (but I could hear it spinning inside), so I bought a new and larger hard drive, figured it was about time. After installing it and to my amazement my Mac wont find the new disk. I figured it was simply as I had not formatted the new drive yet, but the Disk Utility cannot find the new hard drive neither. When installing it seemed to mate perfectly with the internal connectors.
Any tips for a perplexed user, have you seen this behaviour before? How can I connect to the new or old hard drive and any test I can run to find out what is wrong?
    Best Regards

    Hello Stenmark,
There are three scenarios which could be producing the fault.
Scenario 1: Your original hard drive is faulty, and so is the new one (unlikely)
Scenario 2: Your Logic board is faulty (unlikely as you can boot externally)
Scenario 3: The internal Flex cable connecting the HD to the LOGIC BOARD or the connector itself (both connectors are on the same flex cable) has sustained damage when installing, or has faulted with the old hard drive (most likely)
To test, buy an firewire external hard drive case for your drive. You will need a SATA case and the firewire port provides enough power for a Sata drive to function without needing an external power source. Check the OLD + NEW sata HD's in this case to see whats faulty. If your new HD is working, then it comes down to scenario 3 and you need a new flex cable.
Refering to scenario 3, if the either of the connecters from the HD to the LOGIC were damaged before you installed the new one, then the original HD could be functional.
    Hope that helps,
    Matt.

  • HT1145 I can't see my files on my USB shared drive.  It shows there is lots of space taken up, but I can't access the files via my Mac.

I can't see my files on my USB shared drive.  It shows there is lots of space taken up, but I can't access the files via my Mac.  How do I see them?  I also can't see them on my iPad using FileBrowser.

You don't have access to it to configure it via Time Machine? You lost me on that one, Time Machine is used for Backup.
Here is a basic article on the first setup and what you should see:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1178
To configure Time Capsule you should be using "Airport Utility" 5.3 or higher that is located in the Utilities folder. You can tell if its version 5.3 because the icon will have blue lines instead of orange lines like the older versions. Since you are running Leopard 10.5.6 and you ran Software Update you are probably already running the latest 5.3 version.
The light flashing amber means you haven't entered enough information so that it can get to the internet. Once you have that info entered the light will turn green.
If your absolutely sure your CAT5 cables are good you can try a hard reset. I think you have to push the reset button on the back and hold it for 5 seconds or so until the amber light blinks rapidly, then when you release the button it does the reset then.

Hope this helps! If not I would probably call AppleCare support or see if you can exchange it.

  • External 3rd party USB DVD drive will not show up on my 2008 Macbook pro

I have a the new Macbook pro, when I connect my Liteon USB DVD drive it does not show up my Macbook pro. The only DVD drive showing up is the one on my Macbook pro. How do I make the 2nd DVD drive show up. I just need to 2nd drive to tranfers data from dvd to the external drive.

Hi, ipodtrip1. Nothing will appear on your MBP's desktop unless there is a disc in the drive. Does a disc in the drive not appear either?
If not, does System Profiler detect the drive as a connected device?
If you have another USB device you can connect to your computer, disconnect the optical drive and connect the other device. Does System Profiler detect that device?
If not, reset the System Management Controller, and see whether doing so reactivates your USB port.

  • Buffalo USB DVD Drive Problems (DVSM-PC58U2V-SVC on OS10.10)

I just purchased a Buffalo USB DVD Drive (DVSM-PC58U2V-SVC) and it doesn't register when I plug it in. I have a MacBook Pro running on Yosemite. When I connect the drive directly into the USB port, nothing happens (drive started flashing red but made no sound like it was trying to read the disc). When I used a USB extender, the drive sounded like it wanted to work (at least it made that typical CD spinning sound, but quickly stopped) and still nothing.
I contacted Buffalo about compatibility issues since the product did not list Yosemite 10.10, but they reassured me that it should still work on the new OS and to contact Apple instead.
Perhaps I have a malfunctioning product? Any ideas?

It sounds like your drive is failing. If you bought your iMac new and it did not come with any discs then it came with one of the download only versions of OS X. those are Lion Mt Lion and Mavericks. With any Mac that came with them when it was new you use the Online Internet recovery system which is different than the built in Recovery HD partition on the hard drive.
To boot the computer to that system at startup hold down the Command + Option/alt + r keys and keep them held down until you see a globe on the screen. Your Mac will boot from files downloaded from the internet from the Apple servers. From the screen that comes up, which looks just like and is the same as the built in system, you can run Disk Utility and reinstall the origional shipping version of OS X. But if you still can't partition, erase and format the internal drive then it has failed and will need to be replaced.

  • Cannot boot to Windows disc from external USB DVD drive.

I have a MacBook Pro 17" Early 2011 8,3. I have tried to use bootcamp to install Windows 7 from a external USB DVD drive. All I get, like many people, is a black screen with a blinking cursor, as if it never makes it to boot. I tried restarting to the OS selection for holding alt, and tried the DVD again, did not work.
I saw a few posts claiming that this didn't work on some models of Mac because of a EFI problem that would not allow booting from a external USB, which is really stupid because it would seems some models can... And MacBook airs can... Can someone please confirm this for me? Has anyone found a resolution?
If not, APPLE PLEASE FIX THIS.

    Hi,
Thanks for the reply. Yes the MBP is currently running Tiger, I want to flatten this with a fresh install of Leopard. I can view the install DVD when in Tiger currently.
I haven't tried what you have suggested, but I have seen various posts suggesting this approach. I've also seen several posts explain how to create a partition on an external firewire Harddrive and this seems to have worked for various people.
This would however mean that I didn't really need the external Lacie drive at all, as I've got access to my G5s DVD drive over the network. The more I search on this, the more convinced I am the USB drive was a bad idea.
Once again thank for the response.

  • Usb dvd drive with macbook air?

    hi all!
    i have a macbook air.
its a 13 inch core i5,4gb, 128gb ssd late 2011 model with uk specs.
i need to get a dvd drive for it and am wondering if an ordinary usb dvd drive would work with it or not?
i dont want to get the macbook superdrive for £60 if i can use a decent samsung dvd writer for £20 from ebay.
    please advise!
    many thanks !!

There are probably very few that won't work. However, at the very least I would check out with the model specifications that there is OS X compatibility as stated by the manufacturer of the drive.
I've tried a couple of drives that I have and both work just fine. But in my case it was a curiosity more than anything else, because I went ahead and bought a Superdrive (which by the way, I've only used a few times).
I think we are approaching a time when these optical drives are really going to be as unneeded as a floppy.

  • Problems Installing Win7 using External, USB DVD Drive

I have a mid 2010 15" i7 MBP which I upgraded to from 4GB to 8GB RAM courtesy of OWC.  I recently upgraded the 500GB 7200RPM HD with a 240GB OCZ Vertex 3 and using an OWC Data Doubler, I replaced the DVD SuperDrive with the 500GB Hard Drive.
I used an External USB DVD Drive to install OS X SL On the SSD without issues. Also, I got all my updates and software installed and working without any problems.
I've been running great for about 2 weeks now, so I decided to install Windows 7 64bit Ultimate. I ran Boot Camp Assistant and partitioned the 240GB SSD in half 120/120. Everything went fine with creating the partition. I selected to Install from the Win 7 DVD media in the USB DVD drive and rebooted.  I got a grey screen.  I turned the computer off and turned it back on.  Holding down Option, I selected the Install DVD from the Boot Menu.  I then got a screen with the Apple Logo flashing intermittently with a Circle/Cross Hatch.  So I can't get the Windows Install to start to save my life.  I know the External, USB DVD works since I used it to install OS X and I have no problems using it in OS X.  I Know the media works because I tried a test install, without activation in a VMWare Fusion VM.
    Any suggestions are appreciated?

So here is the answer.  The Firmware on the MacBook Pro only supports installation of OS X from External Media and will not install operating systems from 3rd Parties.  I tried to install Windows XP, Win7 Ultimate  32 & 64bit, and Ubuntu 11.04 but no success.
Supposedly, the MacBook Air does support installation of 3rd party operating systems from external media, but I have no way to confirm this.
I ended up reinstalling the internal DVD drive installing Win 7 and Ubuntu on the SSD.  Using rEFI, I'm able to triple boot all 3 operating systems.  Then removed the drive again and reinstalled the 2nd HD. Everything seems to be working fine.
I'm looking for someone who has experience in Mac EFI Hacking to see if there is a way to enable booting 3rd Party OSes from external media.  I'm guessing someone could examine the MBA firmware and figure out how to hack that capability into the MBP.
