Can I connect MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) to thunderbolt display?

The cable fits but the display remains black. Power is on and plugged in.
software is updated to OS X10.6.8

No.
The specs say that a "Thunderbolt-enabled" Mac computer is required.
http://www.apple.com/displays/specs.html
Even if you update the hardware, and the cable fits, the port is not a thunderbolt port (on your 2010 MBP). So it won't work.

You can have Apple replace the logic board, but it will be at your expense.  The free replacement program has ended.
As a band aid you may try the following:
    https://gfx.io/
This will allow you to run on only the integrated GPU.

  • Macbook Pro (17-inch, mid-2010, i5, stock config) freezing -- Nvidia issue?

    Hi there--
I have a fully stock-configured (no mods, no hard drive tweaks, etc.) Macbook Pro (17-inch, mid 2010, i5 model). It's only 3 months old. Running 10.6.4, everything updated and NO peripherals connected...
Anyhow, I was working at Starbucks yesterday morning and the system froze for no reason. Was doing semi-heavy workload with Photoshop CS5 and iTunes going and Safari downloading. Mouse would freeze in-place, iTunes starts stuttering in a loop. I waited, but system remained "frozen" -- only thing I can do at this point is shutdown via the power button.
I powered back up and system froze at the spinning progress indicator that you see on boot-up . I shutdown, powered back up... was able to work for about 10 minutes and same system freeze. I powered down for two hours, powered up, and same thing happened again.
*I've documented these freeze ups via video.* See my Youtube playlist, and the videos titled "crash" here (videos are encoded at 720p -- so click option for more clarity):
    http://www.youtube.com/viewplaylist?p=38CDEF9C98B96BCE
I've also screen capped the crash logs which make me think there is something wrong with the video components of this machine. A whole lotta "Nvidia" related language.
    *See screencaps here:*
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/hildie/sets/72157624689980753/
Does anyone have experience analyzing crash logs, and can tell me what this might be about?
Took it to Genius Bar (Apple Store @ Beverly Center, Los Angeles) early yesterday evening. They were nice, but didn't offer any clear theories other than they think there is something wrong when the system switches from the Intel on-board graphics to the Nvidia graphics. They took the system from me and said they would "check it out for a couple days" and get back to me.
I'm frustrated because I run an extremely clean system (system has fresh OS install only a month ago), and not used to mysterious hardware issues hampering my workflow. Especially when I'm 90% done with updating my design portfolio and desperately need to get back to work!
PS - I tried the latest EFI update, and the issue was still happening after the update.
    Thanks.
    [email protected]

Your frustration is very understandable. It sounds like a hardware issue of some sort. The AHT does not test everything, so it will not necessarily find every possible hardware issue. Apple has a more sophisticated hardware test they can run, and often hardware issues may not show up until the machine is heated up. What they probably want to do is to try to reproduce the freeze and then run the test to see what is wrong.
You can run the cleanest system possible, and still be beset by a hardware problem, which can only be solved by replacing the faulty parts. Here's hoping that the Apple guys can discover what is wrong and fix it for you.
Hardware problems can be intermittent and hard to find. If they can't make it freeze and therefore don't find anything, then the next step would be to use it at the Apple Store until it freezes up and then give it to them to evaluate.
    Good luck!

  • Problems after efi 2.5 update on macbook pro 13 inch(mid 2010)

i don't know if it's related but after i updated my macbook pro 13 inch mid 2010 efi firmware to 2.5 i'm having usb problems.
the problem started after i went to software updates and downloaded efi firmware 2.5, but i didn't restarted right away actually i downloaded the efi firmware around 3pm and shut down my computer around 1am, and in the morning when i turned on my mac it made a strange noise and then restarted. then when it restarted my usb external hd wasn't working well, it takes around 10 minutes for me to be able to watch a video directly from it, and my 3g usb connects but the speed is really slow, so i cant use it. i don't know if efi firmware update is related to usb, but somehow it made my usb ports stoped working properly.
so is there a fix for this?

What you should do is time consuming but really helps (it helped for me)
Go to your disk utility setup and select your harddisk drive, then click on verify disk permissions and after that repair disk permissions, don't ask me why it runs in this order but it seems to elliminate the cause. you will most probably see some repairs being listed.
the next step is to "repair disk" procedure, allthough it could be possible that it can not and then it will tell you to use your setup disk that came with the computer, insert disk hold command and "R" at same time and you come into the menu to repair or re istal software etc.
I ran the repair mode, then re installed my operating software and it seem to resolve this issue but also the long start up problems.
    good luck

  • HT1237 Searching for an EFI Firmware update to enable Lion Internet Recovery on MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010)

    Hi All,
My Mid-2010 Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch started having random kernel panics lately (more than 1 month of random kernel panics now), usually associated with request such as "open new tab in Safari" etc.
Since I installed 2x4GB RAM modules from Crucial when I bought my MBP (they are +- 2 years old now) and also exchanged my DVD-drive for an extra SSD that now runs the system (fully updated 10.7.4) I have a feeling that those kernel panics might be HW related.
I wanted to run Apple Hardware Test but found out that it is no longer supported on Lion. Since I don't have any optical drive to install AHT from (also I don't have the CDs with me atm), I found out that I can install an EFI Firmware update that enables internet-based (?) AHT.
At http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4904# , the link from MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) links to MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.6 which is for Early 2010 models only and doesn't allow me to run the installation process. I'm looking for an EFI update to enable Apple Hardware Test on my Mid-2010 Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch.
Is there an update that can do this? Is there a wrong hyperlink on Apple page or am I searching for a wrong update?
Also, even though this should probably be in a separate topic, can anyone please point me to the right direction for a good Apple Kernel Panic how-to-read-those topic?
Thank you very much in advance.

  • How to update a MacBook Pro 17 inch mid 2010 with SSD?

I know that this question probably been asked many times before, but i can't really find the answers to my specific questions.
I want to update my MacBook Pro 17 inch mid 2010 / 2,66-GHz Intel Core i7-processor, 8 GB memory, running latest Mavericks version (full specs: http://support.apple.com/kb/SP581?viewlocale=nl_NL) with a SSD (i think a 500GB) to speed up my MacBook Pro.
I have about 400GB of data, personal and work related (mostly design work) that is really important to me of course. I use 3 harddrives (one offsite) at the moment to backup everything using Time Machine which works great, because i always can fall back on it when i delete something accidentally.
The physical installation looks quite simple to do, but i have some questions about the entire procedure i hope someone can help me with:
Which SSD will fit in my Macbook Pro the best (specs)? What to look for?
And what about TRIM support to make SSD last longer, i heared that Apple default drives that come with the Mac will support TRIM, but what about any other SSDs on the market do support it and if so which ones?
There are different ways to do install SSD, but what is best procedure?
Clone HDD to SSD with Carbon Copy Cloner or restore from Time Machine?
Clean install with Bootable USB flash drive with Mavericks and restore from Time Machine?
Buy a USB enclosure for SSD and Clone HDD to SSD with Carbon Copy Cloner first and boot it to check and than install the drive?
Could anybody help me with this?
    Thank you.
    Krijn

Look here for the maximum memory for each MBP model:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/by_capability/actual-maximum-ram-capacity-of-mac s.html
The limit is given by the memory controller ("northbridge").
There are no thermal drawbacks expanding the memory to the maximum supported limit...
However, as explained, often Apple did specify an "official" maximum RAM amount which is in reality shorter than the real value, simply because, when the machine was launched, memory sticks of the proper size for giving maximum capacity were not available.
Apple never revises the specs after the launch...
But this did not happen in your case: the maximum memory for mid-2010 Core machines appears to be effectively just 8 Gb, form the page linked above...
Final remark: in my experience, the SSD counts much more than memory for speeding up a laptop! As you already have 8 Gb, there is little value to expand to 16Gb even if it was posisble. Better to invest the same money in a  larger SSD...
I expanded mine because it was equipped with just 4 Gb, and purchasing 16Gb Corsair was costing as 8 Gb Crucial. However, it was not a wise choice, those cheap Corsair memories were bad, the seller had to exchange both sticks...
If I could come back, it was better to spend more and buy Crucial memory sticks!

  • MacBook Pro 15-inch, Mid 2010 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 with Mavericks is very slow

    Hi everybody,
i have already seen this discussion (https://discussions.apple.com/message/24018625#24018625) started by campitor and allegedly solved by arthur but only for campitor's concrete case and already closed. Therefore I have made the same checkup with Etrecheck (see below). It would be really great to solve this problem because I need my mac for work and I am getting really desperate: it's just too slow for effective working. I am really desperate and really thankful for any kind of hint or help that could bring back my machine to normal workable speed.
    cheers,
    Cris

  • Why is not Windows 8 natively supported on MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010)?

    Hello,
Can somebody from apple say why they don't add native support of Windows 8 for MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010) when it is supported on 15-inch model?
    Looking in: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5634
I know that Windows 8 is possible to install and use, but I think it does not make sense to limiting just 13-inch model in bootcamp
    Thanks

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
It's a restriction, because the Mid 2010 13-inch MacBook Pro is completely compatible with Windows 8 (it meets all its requirements), but Apple didn't want to provide Windows 8 Boot Camp drivers for it. You can run Windows 8 if you want, but it won't work properly.
Apart from that, there are some how-to's in the Internet in order to install Windows 8 Boot Camp drivers in unsupported Macs

  • MacBook Pro 13-inch Mid 2010 using Mac OS X 10.8 Keyboard Issues.

    Good day ASC,
I have a MacBook Pro 13-inch Mid 2010 upgraded to Mac OS X 10.8. It now has keyboard issues. Keys F4, 4, r, f, v, caps lock, space bar, and directional keys left and down do not work. I've been looking into the problem thinking it could be a software issue. Can anyone help?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You need to install the Windows support software in Windows to make it run properly. You have to download and install these drivers in Windows > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1630?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
After installing them, I recommend you to look for a newer GPU driver

  • Does MacBook Pro 13 inch (mid 2010 model) Support DP MST 1.2?

Does the MacBook's Pro 13 inch (mid 2010 model) mini Display Port output support the DisplayPort 1.2 Multi Stream protocol?
The graphics card on this model is the Nvidia GeForce 320M.
    Thank you.

DsiplayPort and its variant Mini DisplayPort are interesting protocols because they use a packet interface to send mostly the changed data. There is no gratuitous repainting the screen with the same data (every 1/60 second or similar) as performed by almost every protocol that came before it.
This would free a lot of time on the interface for the information to support an additional display in the newly freed "dead time" when nothing has changed on the primary display. What would be needed at the computer end is a different address for the second and subsequent display(s). What would be needed at the Display-end is a display with a "daisy chain" output port (it cannot be the same as an input port because the signal drivers are set up to accept input, not drive output) to be able to pass the signal along to another display.
To the best of my knowledge, Apple has not yet taken advantage of this ability to address a second display, and at this writing these interfaces on Apple computers support only one Mini DisplayPort display.
There may be the ability to daisy-chain a second Thunderbolt display off the first Thunderbolt display in a chain, when working with a Mac's Thunderbolt connector.
But at this writing, any Mini DisplayPort device connected to that port is always the last device on the chain.

  • Mavericks slowed down my MacBook Pro 13 inch (Mid 2010)

I did a clean install of 10.6.3 (which came with my MacBook Pro).  Then upgraded to 10.6.8 to be able to download Mavericks from the App store.  Installed Mavericks and everything (boot-up, application lauch, opening folders, etc.) has been dragging since then.  Can someone explain a better way to do the installation or changes to make to improve the speed?
    Thank you,
MacBook Pro 13 inch (Mid 2010)

I have the same problem.  I have 4gb of RAM; I was going to upgarde to 8, but seeing that you have 8, this probably won't help.
I feel like it's progressivly getting slower as well.
I was going to get a solid state drive and more RAM to fix the issue.
Looking at my activity monitor I show this:
As it sits right now, I have just Chrome open, facebook tab, email tab and this thread tab open and it's using 3.99 of my memory.  Kernal_task is using the most memory.
I dont want to buy a new computer but maybe it's just too old?
Any info would be great.  I'm not terribly technical and I love my mac, makes me sad to think of getting rid of it!  Altho excited for a new one

  • How to reformat macbook pro 13 inch mid 2010

Hello Everyone, can someone help me please. My laptop is too slow now and i want to reformat my Macbook Pro 13 inch mid 2010 (software:
Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5) Everytime i insert installation disc,it says cannot use this software to this version. Please help thanks

It's because your on OS X Lion 10.7 and the disks are for 10.6 or earlier.
10.7 and up have a RecoveryHD partition on the boot drive. Hold the Command R keys down and boot the machine into it and Disk Utility and Install OS X is there.
If you install OS X without using Disk Utility to erase all your data first, it just replaces OS X with a new copy.
Only by erasing all your data first, then installing OS X, will cure your slow down problems however it deletes all your users, files and programs in the process.
If you don't want to lose your files, you need to make a copy of them to a external drive before you erase the internal drive.

    My laptop is too slow
Well if you investigate why it's slow, perhaps you can fix it in place without wiping everything and starting over with nothing.
    Why is my computer slow?

  • Reply/Reply All/Forward in mail crashes Macbook Pro (15 inch Mid 2010)

    Dear All,
I am having a chronic issue with Mail. Every time (almost - it's slightly inconsistent!) I hit reply, reply all or forward in Mac Mail it crashes the whole system without warning.
Spec and troubleshooting so far listed below.
    Any help much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Ben
    Spec:
    Macbook Pro (15 inch Mid 2010) - MacBookPro6,2
    8GB Ram
    2.53 GHz Intel Core i5
    OS: Mavericks (10.9.5)
    Mail: Version 7.3 (1878.6)
    Troubleshooting so far
Disk Utility (Permisions and disk repair)
    Resetting the PRAM
Starting up in a new user (same issue)
    Mac Mail Rebuild
Googling (lots on mail repair but nothing I can see on this specific issue)

    Thanks Eric,
    I will try.
    My next question.
How do I know which 3rd party app is the one causing the problem. I may have 40-50 3rd party apps installed. Is there no way of identifying the repeat offender?
    Thanks
    Ben
