Can I connect my Mac to two separate wireless networks at the same time?

Need some assistance with some advanced wireless networking please....
Upstairs I have a D-link wireless router connected to the internet and wired to a couple of PCs. Downstairs I have a minimac linked to my hifi via an airport express. I have bought a D-Link DWL-G122 usb wifi dongle.
So I want the mini mac to connect to the airport express on one wireless network (strong signal) and to be able to connect to the internet on another network (weak signal) via the usb wifi /router.
But the airport software and the d-link driver seem to conflict and both try to take control of the two wireless devices.
Is there any way round this to be able to run one mac with two wireless network devices at the same time?
Thanks

While those with more experience may be able to correct me, I'm pretty sure that you can only connect to one wireless network at a time with your Mac Mini, unless D-Link provides their own proprietary software that bypasses the computer's Airport settings.
Using the AirPort hardware you can only connect to a single wireless network at any given time. However in this situation the 2 attempted connections are via USB and AirPort. Therefore this requires nothing special of the AirPort drivers or settings.
It does require that the Mac OS and applications have the capability to use either network connection (USB or AirPort) depending on what data they are trying to get. In general I understand how it is theoretically possible but I have no idea if you can configure OS X to do it.
...I believe one of the options when setting up the Airport Extreme Base Station is that you can extend a wireless network already in place.
True but the D-Link is not compatible with Apple's WDS therefore this is not possible in this situation.
If you have a newer Airport Extreme Base Station with a USB port on it...
FYI, every AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) has a USB port.
BTW, birky has indicated that he/she is using an AirPort Express (AX) not an AEBS.

  • Can't connect to Internet and 192.168.1 network at the same time

I have been having an issue with my MacBook's networking for the past 4 months. Here are the specifics:
*My MacBook is connected to the Internet via a linux router, with an address in the 192.168.1.x address space. DNS server is an openDns server, 208.67.222.222
*My MacBook is assigned an IP Address manually in the 192.168.1.x namespace
*I have a printer manually assigned an address in the 192.168.1.x namespace
    Problem:
    * I can only connect to my printer if I leave my DNS server entry blank under my Airport TCP/IP configuration
    * I can only connect to the Internet when my DNS server entry to set to the openDNS server entry.
    Question:
Is there any way I can connect to both my local network printer and the Internet at the same time? I have set up two locations that I can switch between, but I would prefer to be able to access both networks at once.

I tried turning AppleTalk on, but no luck.
It seems that the problem is related to basic TCP/IP connectivity. For example, when my DNS server is set to blank, I get a fine response from the command "ping 192.168.1.253". However, when my DNS is set to one of the openDNS servers, I get this error:
    PING 192.168.1.253 (192.168.1.253): 56 data bytes
ping: sendto: No route to host
    ping: sendto: Host is down

  • WRT110 Can't connect MAC and PC to wireless network at the same time.

I installed a WRT110 router on my son-in-law's MAC sometime back and at the time configured it to have the MAC connected via Ethernet.  My PC laptop worked fine with it in the wireless mode.  Recently we changed the MAC to wireless newtworking and removed the Ehthernet connection.  Now if the MAC connects to the wireless network first and then I attempt to connect with my PC laptop the PC cannot find the network and the MAC loses connection.  If I shut my PC down the MAC will not find the network until it is put to sleep and reawakened.  If the MAC is put to sleep my PC wil immediately find the network. If I first connect my PC and then awaken the MAC both work fine.  I've checked all of the router's setup settings and they seem to be OK.  I am not MAC savvy and my son-in-law is a neophyte at computers so we are really helpless when something doesn't work.  Help will be appreciated.

I tried this setup change after reading another similar post.  It didn't help.  One thing I had wrong in the first post is that neither computer will connect to the wireless net after we experience the wireless failures until both are turned off, at least that is what happened after making the suggested changes.  Is this a WRT110 issue?  Seems there are quite a few posts similar to mine.

  • Can't connect more than one PC to my network at the same time.

When trying to connect a second wireless laptop to my network, the one already connected gets disconnected. I'm using a WRT110 router(cable connection) that I bought 5 days ago, and two laptops with Win Vista. I don't have any PC wired connected.

First thing which you need to do is upgrade the firmware of your Router. Go to website linksysbycisco.com/downloads... ......insert model no of your router in serach tab......select proper version of your router........download the firmware file......save that file on desktop..
Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device : -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on a computer hard wired to the router...
In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1...Leave the Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...
Wait for few seconds until it shows that "Upgrade is successful"  After the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back to the same page OR it will say "Page cannot be displayed".
    Now reset your router :
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...
Once you configure all the settings on your router... here are some wireless settings which you can set on your Router and i think this might make your both the wireless computers go Online...
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab
    - Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
    - Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
    - Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WEP, Encryption should be 64 bit.Leave the passphrase blank, don't type in anything...Under WEP Key 1 type in any 10 numbers please(numbers only and no letters eg: your 10 digit phone number) and click on save settings...
Please make a note of WEP Key 1 as this is the Security Key for the Wireless Network...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

  • Can't connect and use 2 Store.E Canvio HDDs at the same time

    Hi there,
I have 2 Store.e Canvio devices: 2TB and 3TB respectively but, it looks like I can't connect/use them at the same time, as if I do, one of them (the lastest I have connected), becomes inaccessible ("denied access").
If I disconnect the first device I connected, the second one, starts working,,,
Is a weird issue, and I can't find anyone experiencing something similar...
Any idea how could it be causing this, and/or how could I solve it?
    Thanks

Im wondering if the same problem appears using another computer or additional USB hub with an additional power supply.
From my point of few this issue could be related to low power provided by single USB port.
Both HDDs seem to support the USB 3.0 standard.
The common USB 2.0 port provides 500mA and USB 3.0 requires 900mA
So this means that two USB devices connected simultaneously would use 1800mA which might be too much for the notebooks USB ports

  • Can I extend both a 2.4Ghz and a 5Ghz wireless network at the same time with a second Timecapsule / Extreme ?

Can I extend both a 2.4Ghz and a 5Ghz wireless network coming from a Timecapsule  with a second Timecapsule / Extreme at the same time?

I am currently extending my 5Ghz network via an Express without any problems, but the Express can only extend either / or. I just want full coverage for both networks in the whole house.
If you can extend 5 GHz now with an AirPort Express and get satisfactory results, then the AirPort Extreme will work to extend both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands in the same location.
However, your computer is going to connect to the band with the strongest signal, so it may....or may not....connect to 5 GHz given a choice of two signals.

  • Can I share itunes music with two separate computer users on the same computer using the same itunes account?

I have gone through the insturctions on sharing a folder, but it will not update under both itunes libraries when I download new music? For example, I log in as "User A" and download a song on itunes. I then log into the same computer as "User B" and open itunes and the song is not there, even though the music library is the same shared folder on the computer. I tried downloading the music as "User B" but then I get the error: You do not have enough access privileges for this operation".
Does anyone have any ideas how I can properly and continuously share the same music between accounts? I have to use seperate computer log in accounts because my wife and I have our own calendars, contacts, etc...
    Thank you!

For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
    What you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder (but note: some users find ongoing permissions issues with the Library in this location. It might be better to use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

  • Can a HP B210 AIO printer be connected to 2 different wireless networks at the same time?

I live in a household that has 2 different wireless networks in it (both me and my roommate have our own networks) and we just bought a new B210 series AIO printer.  The printer detects both of our networks but only will print from one network at a time. If I want to print from my network I have to manually go to the wireless network wizard on the printer and select my network and re-enter my password. Is there any way that I can set up the printer to acknowledge both networks without having to constantly switch back and forth?

  • Problems connecting 2 computers to wireless network at the same time

Switched to Mac 2 weeks ago and will never go back!!!!!
Having a slight problem with my home wireless network.. I am running Leopard 10.5.1 and my wife has Vista... For some reason we cannot connect to our wireless network unless one of the other computers is on and connected.. Example: I just opened my Macbook and it showed that I was connected.. However, I could not get any access to the internet without first turning my wifes computer on and connecting.. The same happens when my wife tries to get online.. Her laptop will not connect unless mine is connected first.. It is rather strange.. The last one on the internet is the only one with access unless the other computer is connected.. I am not sure if this is a problem with the router or a compatibility issue with Microsoft and Apple.. If anyone could help it would be highly appreciated as it is quite frustrating that when I want to connect to our network I must connect my wifes computer first.. and vice versa for her.. Can anyone help? We use a Belkin wireless router...

For $50 or so you could get a Linksys WRT54G and not have the headaches. It cannot be an issue with the computers so by default it is the router. Get a better one.
A router will be indifferent to a computer connecting unless it is set to reject them with mac filtering, the password is wrong or there is a limit set to only issue one IP address in which case both would not work. The router cannot know XP from OSX, or a mac from Windows as the standard is 802.11 and TCP/Ip not brand specific.

  • Can I connect my mac to two separate networks at once

I have a macbook at a workplace. I need to access one set of resources via an ethernet cable, another set of resources via airport. In order to access one or the other, I either unplug the ethernet or switch off the wifi. Is there a way I can keep both connections alive and map out which resources are to be found at which connection?

Here's what I have to do:
On the ethernet via USB bridge, I want to mount various Windows Shares via SAMBA. I mounted one of these drives and tried "get info," but just got stuck in "fetching" more info in the get info box, so I could not find the IP.
Also on the ethernet via USB bridge, I want to access one website external to my workplace that maps back to our workplace's IP address to verify authenticity. I don't know how to find the IP of a website using Yosemite (didn't there used to be a network utility?)
Also on the ethernet via USB bridge, I want to access a few internal sharepoint sites on windows servers and one Intranet website. No idea on how to get IPs from these.
Via the Airport connection, I want to see the just about anything else out there. We use office365, so mail & calendaring work fine via the wifi.
I am more or less the only Macintosh in my work place of nearly two hundred thousand PCs, so tech support is not exactly strong.

  • Can I share my internet connection via wifi AND use my wireless printer at the same time?

Not completely familiar with  wifi capabilities. I have this new setup in my office. I want to share my iMac internet connection via wifi so I can text and check emails using my iPhone (no cell service inside the building). Which works fine. However, I now cannot print wirelessly to my HP printer (LaserJet Pro 400 color). Once Internet sharing is off, I can print just fine. Any other wireless options, or just go get a long USB cable?

    Hi,
It is not a multitasking printer, other devices may keep it therefore the best option in this case: connect it to your wireless router and all devices which are conntected to this router can sahre the printer.
    Regards.

  • HT2542 Can we have two separate itunes accounts using the same mac?

I am wanting to download music to my Thunderbolt smart phone (i know, no iphone yet, next upgrade) and I want to use itunes to do it. My partner has an itunes account and I thought I opened my own itunes account, but apparently I didn't. I don't like the same music and only want to download music I like to my phone. Can we just have one account and be able to download checked music from the itunes to multiple devices?

    I'm confused
Can we have two separate itunes accounts using the same mac?
Can we just have one account and be able to download checked music from the itunes to multiple devices?
Do you want one or two?
By the way, and iTunes account is really the thing you use online to purchase music, not what you have on a computer.  You have user accounts on a computer, and you have iTunes libraries or collections of media.  You can have multiple user accounts on a computer.  You can have a single or multiple user accounts use a single or multiple libraries.  We need to know exactly what it is you have/want.

  • Can I be connected to two networks at the same time?

    Hi there
I have an imac desktop with 10.5.8 running. I have a wireless network with my timecapsule and a printer connected to it. We have two mac computers in the house
that print wirelessly via this network. I also have the internet coming in via a wireless modem/wifi which both computers use to go online. The trouble is everytime I want to print from either computer I have to change back and forth from the internet/network to the timecapsule/printer network. This is really fumbly and I wind up having to restart all the time because the printer gets locked up. It's just a big hassle. Is there any way I can be on both of these networks at the same time or is there some other way I can configure this?
    Thanks!

Is there any way I can be on both of these networks at the same time or is there some other way I can configure this?
Yes, you can reconfigure the Time Capsule (TC) to "Join a wireless network." In this case the wireless network would be the one created by the other wireless Internet router. In this configuration, the TC can still share its internal (and external) hard drive and a printer attached to the USB port. However, note that this would disable the TC as a router and an Ethernet switch so basically it will perform as a wireless client.

Can I have two separate iTunes accounts on the same computer?  My wife's music is much different than mine.  Can we have different iTunes libraries to work with on the same computer?

Yes. Launch iTunes with the Shift key held down as needed, or use separate Windows user accounts on the computer.
