Can I connect my Time Capsule wired to the computer and just use it as a back up

Can I connect my Time Capsule to my computer (wired) and just use it as a back up and not as a wireless router?

Yes, you simply bridge the TC..
Just google for it as we have posted the instructions endlessly.
The one trick that might be necessary is to ensure the TC is on a different IP range to the main broadband connection.
And make sure the gateway and dns do not cause issues.. so it is generally better to set static ip on the TC and the computer.
None of it is hard so ask for specific instructions if you get to the point.

  • Can I connect my Time Capsule directly to the Verizon FIOS ONT?

    Hi
I'm getting rid of Verizon FIOS TV and phone, but keeping FIOS Internet.
My ONT is a TELLABS 612A, the ethernet port is active and connecting to the Verizon router without a problem. The coax is gone -- toast.  The Time Capsule is connected to the Verizon router and I'm running my wired and wireless network off the Time Capsule.  I want to completely get rid of the Verizon router so that I'm no longer paying a router rental fee.
    So I want to either:
    1.  Connect the TC directly to the ethernet port of the ONT and use the TC as the router.
    2.  Buy another ac router as a bridge.  Obviously this option seems redundant.
I'm interested in the feasibility of option 1 and to hear from people regarding the setup they used.
For option 2 I'm similarly interested in hearing about the setup and replacement router they used.
    Many thanks
    Simon

Ok.. this is where life gets more difficult.. and you might need a network expert to look at things.
I need numbers and screenshots.. please plug a computer directly into the ONT.. do you get internet on that computer. If so give me the whole network screenshots from the ethernet preferences.. showing me IP, subnet, gateway and DNS.
Then plug in the TC and give me the screenshots from the WAN side of the TC including the same info as above.
Do not blank out anything.. you are on a dynamic IP so it will change when you swap things around.. but I need the exact values to work on.
I can tell you the Time Capsule can have issues with fibre connections. The reason is fairly complex but it has to do with Apple being too purist in their network design.. and the reality being much messier and needing routers to be far more flexible than Apple allows. (The gateway of the connection is not contained in the subnet provided with the IP).
Or does your connection use pppoe? Some fibre connections do and Apple has definite issues with PPPOE.
Anyway some things in the end simply prove too hard.. that is the point of the test.. if it is too hard.. stick to the current setup and live with it.
I have the same issue with ADSL.. every other router works fine.. but I cannot use an apple router as the main network router. It just is a failure on the PPPOE and does not allow sufficient settings to comply with the ISP requirements.

  • Can i connect my time capsule to my hdtv for use as an extra display for my mac book pro?

I want to use my hdtv as a display wirelessly.  Can one connect their time capsule to the tv?

    1. Can my TC handle "dual band" wifi or not? As it's 3 years old, I'm not sure the spec is sufficient.
They have been dual band since gen2.. yours is gen4 or at worst gen3.
    2. Is the TC likely to provide better performance than the BT Home Hub router, as the Apple store suggest?
Impossible to say.. but easy to test.. simply plug the TC into the BT router in bridge mode and use it with setup to create a wireless network.. that is the way I would suggest anyway.
    3. Will the BT wifi extender still work if the TC is the main router? BT aren't sure, hence asking here.  "Trial and error" will take hours and because of the wifi issues in my house, can be frustrating.
Sorry this is out of my perview.. I can suggest it will be poor.. apple do not use standard settings for extend wireless.. and if it is universal repeater they also behave poorly.. Have you thought of using EOP adapters.. very popular in the UK and tend to work much better than wireless.
    4. Would the BT wifi extender communciate with the TC or the BT Home Hub router?
As suggested above.. leave the BT as the main router and plug the TC bridged into it.. you can then use both..
simply set the wireless names different and keep the channels apart.
    For 2.4ghz there are only 3 non-overlapping channels.. 1, 6, 11 or 13 as alternative in UK.
For 5ghz there are lots more but the lower channels work better.. so 36-48 depending on regs in the UK.

I am not sure we are talking about the same thing..
The FIOS is a full router.
You plug the TC into the FIOS by ethernet.. WAN TC, LAN FIOS.
Then you plug your computer into TC or FIOS.. or you can use TC wireless or FIOS wireless.. both will connect to both TC and internet. But generally for high speed backups, you will be better connecting directly to the TC.. whether by wireless or ethernet.

  • Can i connect my time capsule with my router as a bridge ?

can i connect my time capsule with my router as a bridge ?

I am a bit lost .. did you work this out?? You are running a second thread.. and answered it with this question.
The TC can be bridged.. plug it into the main router by ethernet and run it in bridge mode.. that is router bridge.
    Do you mean wireless bridge??
If you mean wireless bridge the answer is maybe but unlikely.
If you setup the TC to join a wireless network.. it becomes a dumb client not a bridge.
So to get it to wireless bridge you need to use another apple router.. that is the only way to get them to work.
If you want specifics ask specific questions.

I can't connect to Time Capsule- error message: Backup disk is not available. Was working fine before.

Restart it.. Does this all the time with Lion and even worse ML.
Restart the whole network if that doesn't work.. do it in correct order.. from off.. modem.. TC.. clients 2min gap.

Any other suggestions or things I should know about apple products in Ireland.  I know there are no Apple stores there.
An adaptor doesn't burn out. It merely serves as a means to connect the power prongs on your device to the power supply.
I believe you are thinking of a transformer, which you do not need. A transformer converts one voltage to another.
You don't need to do that as the power supply of modern electronics can take almost any worldwide voltage.
Look at the label on the device. It should indicate the input power acceptable of 100-240 VAC, 50-60 Hz.
Additionally, I found the adapters cheaper in the UK than I found them in the US. They were available in most supermarket chains. I wasn't in Ireland, so I can't say one way or the other.
If you have something that doesn't have that input power spec, it would require a transformer.
On other items like electric clocks or things with motors, you can connect them up to a transformer and the voltage will be correct, but the frequency may not. For clocks, that will cause them to not keep time well. For motors, they will burn out.

The new firefox twitter app (mini tab on left of page) is great - except it disappears every time I shut down the computer and I have to remove and then reinstall it every day!?? It won't appear on the page until I do. I am working on an iMac - if that is causing the problem ...? Thanks.

Eustace, thank you so much for writing back.  I will try what you suggested!!
thx for your reply - apparently when I went to the Apple store a long time ago, they restore maybe photos and itunes etc from my external hard drive (passport).  I guess at that time they reinstalled an earlier operating system than my macbook came with and that somehow corrupted FileVault.  apparently there was no sparse bundle (whatever that is) for my old admin account and they said that ever since the install of the older OS that it was actually NEVER backing up anything in my admin account.
Then, I bought Time Capsule and starting backing up to that instead.  I started having problems with it being slow etc and then StartUp Disk full errors and didn't know what to do, so I "Restored" from Time Capsule and that's when I lost everything in my Admin account and was locked out when I tried to log in - it said File Vault error ..."
anyway - that's THAT sad story.  I was told to create a new admin account and I've basically been trying to start over - even though I have a partial save of my computer in Crash Plan and I DO see a sparse bundle listed in there, but I just don't know enough about computers to know if it's something I can get back or if I am just totally doomed.
I'm afraid to reinstall anything because if there is even a remote shot that the other files are still floating around in my computer, I feel like that chance will be shot forever.  I need to hire McGee from NCIS, I just KNOW he could get those files back for me!!!

  • Suddenly can't connect to Time Capsule

I have had a Time Capsule now for over a year and have had few problems. Nothing a restart here and there wouldn't fix. However, tonight I came home and am unable to connect wirelessly. I checked my TC and it was solid green light. But my MacBook couldn't "see" it there. I powered the TC down and back up a couple usually as well as two different re-sets. I've not got it to a flashing yellow light and I can see the TC on my network list, but it will not connect no matter what I do. My previous "home" profile has been delete and I can't create a new one either.
I open Airport Utility, and it's a yellow dot - I double click the yellow dot and am told that an error occured joining the selected wireless network.
This is with just the generic by default TC name. I click on manual setup in Airport Utility and get the same message.
My actuall internet is fine, as when I unplug the ethernet cable from my DSL modem and plug directly into the Macbook I'm online in seconds.
I have had snow leopard installed for a little over a week and this is the first time I've got a problem.
My iPhone can't connect either. When I plug the ethernet line back into the TC it eventually turns to a solid yellow light, and in my airport status in my menu bar, I can select the generic TC name, but the status lines just roll up and down and never connect.
HELP!!!! I really don't care to be "wired" in the storage room to be online! This thing was way to pricey to not be working.

Did you find a solution for this? I'm having the same problem.

  • We traded our home internet service for a Sprint Hot Spot.  The hot spot does not have an ethernet port to connect through.  Can we connect our time capsule to the wireless hot spot?

Hello, we switched our home internet service from an ethernet modem to a wireless hot spot.
Do you know if there is a way to connect our time capsule to the hot spot?
Everything I read only suggests connecting through an ethernet cable.  I'm hoping there is a way to do this.
    Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks!!!

No you can't join a wireless hotspot with a Time Capsule directly via it's 'join' option (tried and failed - well to be exact it kinda works but the Time Capsule's ethernet ports no longer work).
What you can do is buy an airport express and use it's 'join' option to connect to the iPhone's hotspot. Then you connect the airport express via ethernet to the time capsule (in bridge-mode).
You can then connect your computers to the time capsule via ethernet or use it's wireless function to set up wireless network (with a different name to that of the hotspot) that your wifi stuff can connect to.

  • I have a wifi router already. Can I connect a time capsule to that wirelessly?, I have a wifi router already. Can I connect my time capsule to that wirelessly?

I Have a wifi router which is located in my brothers bedroom. Now I am buying a iMac. Along with it I want to buy a time capsule which I want in my bed room. Is it possible to connect the two wifi routers wirelessly?

The Time Capsule can be configured to "join a wireless network" so backups will occur over the wireless network that is being provided by the wireless router in the other bedroom.
Things will be fine as long as there is a strong wireless signal where the Time Capsule will be located.
But...the Time Capsule cannot "extend" the wireless network or provide more wireless coverage...unless...the other router is also an Apple product.

  • Changed Service Provider and now I can't connect my time capsule

Must I do a soft reset on my time capsule to connect it to my new wireless network?  I have an Orange Fibre Play network and even if I connect the Time Capsule using an ethernet cable, it can't see it.

Setup the TC by doing a full factory reset.
Soft reset is useless.. that doesn't change anything.
And hard reset does not get rid of the old settings.
So full factory and if it doesn't show up on wireless.. use ethernet in full isolation to the network to do the initial setup.
    The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
    Factory reset Gen 5
Hold in reset for about 5sec until the status light flashes quickly.
If your AirPort Time Capsule still doesn’t respond, do a similar reset to the Gen1-4.
Unplug your AirPort Time Capsule .. hold in reset and power the TC back on.. without releasing the reset.. wait until status led flashes rapidly.

  • Can't connect to Time Capsule using Ethernet

    Hi All
I've got a new Macbook Pro, and want to migrate my old machine across.  First attempt took 3 days wirelessly and then failed, with no given reason or explanation.  I want to attempt to restore this a 2nd time, but would like to use ethernet as I can't afford another 3 days of being in limbo.
The problem is that I can see the Time capsule wirelessly, but can't see it via Ethernet.
    Any clues?

(I think this is the way they're supposed to be set up)
Unfortunately, no. The Setup Manual does not even cover this type of configuration. You must have discovered this by poking around in the setup utility, etc.
An Ethernet cable connection to the modem or router is always the way to go for speed and reliability.
One thing that you may not have thought about in your current setup is that the wireless signal must make two "hops" for a backup. One hop from your Mac to the wireless router and then another wireless hop back out to the Time Capsule.
So, not only will it take more much more time....the chances of an error are doubled.
I recommend that you consider reconfiguring the Time Capsule correctly by connecting it directly to the your wireless router using an Ethernet cable. Then, wireless backups only make one "hop"....and...you have the option to connect directly to one of the Ethernet ports on the Time Capsule to speed the backup by 4-5 times over wireless.
In general, you can expect to backup about 25-30 GB an hour using Ethernet.
If you do not need the wireless network that the Time Capsule provides, it is a simple matter to turn off the wireless on the Time Capsule.
