Can I control a Windows PC from my Macbook Pro?

I have a Macbook Pro running Mavericks, and a Windows PC running XP.
I don't use the Windows machine much, it's just for tasks using older software, etc.  It's not connected to the network in the house because it runs XP which no longer receives security updates from MS.
What I would love to do is control the XP machine by using Remote Desktop from my Macbook, rather than having a separate keyboard, mouse and monitor connected to the XP machine.
I've no idea how to go about doing this if the XP machine isn't on the home network.
Any suggestions?

You can use ARD to remote control a windows machines, ARD is built on VNC
You'll have to install a VNC server on the windows machine you want to access
You won't be able to use most of the ARD features as they are specific to mac
You'll be be able to see and control the desktop and that's about it
You can also find VNC /Remote Desktop apps in the iOS store that will allow remote desktop connection from iPad /iPhone,
There is a mac version of Microsoft remote desktop in the Mac App Store

  • How can I move my iPhoto Library from my MacBook Pro to my iMac or hard drive??

How can I move my iPhoto Library from my MacBook Pro to my iMac or to my external hard drive? 'Help' is not helping!!

    To move to another machine:
To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
To move to an external disk:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • How can I completely delete an app from my Macbook Pro?

How can I completely delete an app from my Macbook Pro?

For programs that do not require an Administrator's password to install on your Mac, drag its program icon to the Trash. For those that require a password, research its developer's website or other support options for specific uninstallation instructions.
Never use all-purpose "cleaners" or "zappers" or similarly named clever utilities to uninstall anything.

  • How can I remove Windows XP from my MacBook Pro?

I've tried everything I can find to get rid of Windows XP on my MacBook Pro.  I have OS X 10.5.8 and, unlike later versions, BootCamp Assistant 2.0 doesn't allow the option to restore the disk.  And I can't find an update to BootCamp anywhere that will work. Seems I need Snow Leopard to upgrade to 3.0.

Boot Camp has an option to remove the Windows partition provided you made the partition with Boot Camp and did not later modify it or create a third-partition on the drive.
    This may work:
Open Disk Utility, select your drive in the sidebar, then click on the Partition button in the DU main window.  Select the Windows partition by clicking in the Windows rectangle of the partitions display.  Click on the Delete [-] button to remove the partition then click on the Apply button.  Wait for DU to either complete the operation or error out.  If DU removes the partition then click on the partition sizing gadget (lower right hand corner) on the main partition and drag all the way to the bottom to fill the gray space left from removing the Windows partition.  Click on the Apply button and wait until the operation is completed.
If you get errors at either of the two procedures then that means the drive's RDB has been damaged or altered.  In this case backup the drive, boot from the backup, erase the drive, then restore the backup.

If you have a MacBookPro with retina display, you can use an HDMI connector to connect your laptop to an HDTV.

How can I totally remove the malware program GoPhoto.it from my MacBook Pro? I am desperate to get some help on this issue.
Somehow, the malware GoPhoto.it downloaded itself to my computer. A few days ago in a desperate attempt to delete the program, I followed some instructions that I found online. I deleted the "supposed" file from the "Application Support" folder, but the program continues to plague my laptop! Please help, as I just got this computer a few months ago and would like to make it last as long as possible!
    Blessings and thanks in advance!

  • Printing to a Windows Printer from a MacBook Pro

Gidday Folks, my apologies if this has been dealt with but I wasn't able to find a solution that exactly fits my problem. Hope you can help.
I'm using a MacBook Pro in a Windows environment and although it is easy to hook into the network and locate the printer (a Kyocera FS8000-C), it's become a lottery as to whether I can actually print through it. Sometimes I can, sometimes I can't.
It seems the print job will execute IF the 'Shared Printer' category is available in the Page Setup dialog box. If 'Shared Printer' isn't an available option, and I select the Kyocera option, the print job doesn't complete and I get the "... unable to connect via SAMBA etc ..." error message in the print job dialog box.
I remember when connecting my old PowerBook using Jaguar, I installed the gimp print ghosting software. Should I do that here? Tiger has removed the need for gimp print hasn't it? And in any case, the software wouldn't be compatible with the Intel chip would it?
We've just attached a 12" PowerBook (running OS 10.4.6) to the same network and it seemlessly found the printer, set itself up and is printing happily ...
Is it the new Intel chip that might be involved in my printing problem?
    Any advice greatly appreciated.
    Sincerely
    GrahamK

I think I've solved the problem. At least, I've got the MacBook printing to the PC networked printer for the moment.
First of all I installed Gimp-Print; now whether this had a part to play in the end I'm not sure because the G-P software, although Tiger savvy, appears to have been PPC-native. Would this make a difference in the Intel MacBook?
Anyway, next up I followed the directions set out by William White in the document "How to Print to Windows from OSX 10.2" (sorry I don't have a URL for where it was found).
In the Add the Windows printer in the Mac Print Center section he says (I've edited out the extra bits):
4.1 Open the Print Center (Print Setup Utility in OSX 10.4.6) and click "Add Printer" with the Option key held.
4.2 From the main drop down menu select the [Advanced] option.
4.3 Select [Windows Printer via SAMBA] and go to Step 4.4.
4.4 Give the Device a name.
4.5 Enter the printer's Device URI in the form:
    smb://username:password@workgroup/servername/sharedprinter
    4.6 Select the printer type.
4.7 Select the printer driver. (I'd already installed the Kyocera driver)
4.8 Finally, ensure that Windows File Sharing is enabled in the System Preferences Sharing pane,
After a system re-start, the print jobs began rolling.
It was the URI that needed attention, it seems the password was what was tripping the system and once I got that right everything began to work.
Some of these directions might be obsolete in Tiger, e.g. I'm not sure 4.8 is essential and as I said above I'm not exactly sure if the Gimp-Print installation played a part, but I'm up and printing for th moment.
    Thanks iFelix for your help.

  • Can I transfer a hard drive from one macbook pro laptop to another?

I have a 2009 Macbook pro with a cracked screen and a messed up track pad (laptop A), but a fully functional hard drive. I have another 2009 Macbook pro (laptop B) with a blown hard drive, but everything else seems to be fine.
I removed the blown hitachi 320 hard drive from laptop B and set it aside. Then I removed the seemingly good Seagate 500 hard drive from laptop A and put it into laptop B. When I turn on Laptop B with the hard drive in it I get the folder with the question mark screen.
HELP. I am not tech savvy at all. But I can follow directions. Thanks.
    Monica
*Please let me know if you need additional information from me.

Restart the computer with the Option key held down.
If you see the drive, click on it and then select it in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
If you don’t, insert a Mac OS X install DVD, press C if needed, and either repair the drive or install an OS onto it.

  • Removing Windows 8 from my MacBook Pro?

    Hello,
I currently have windows eight installed on my partition. I want to uninstall it so I will be able to run it with parallel desktop. Parallel currently does not support Windows 8 from Bootcamp.
My question is in order to erase windows 8 what format should I click on? As shown in the screenshot. It was originally highlighted on the last selection ( windows) however, it will not give me the option to erase.
    Thanks,
    Jonathan

Use Boot Camp Assistant to remove the partition, your disc will be returned to as it was before the partition was made, do not use Disk Utility.

  • How can i download my word documents from my macbook pro to my IPad?

I have many documents on my macbook pro that are word documents i want to download to my new IPad. How can i do this. I have read there is a way to do it through ITunes, but i have no idea how to do that either?
    Help

You can copy documents to the iPad, but first you need one or more apps on the iPad that supports the type of document that you want to copy - unlike a 'normal' computer the iPad doesn't have a file system, and everything on it has to be associated with an app.
For word documents the options include Apple's Pages app, and from third-parties apps such as Documents To Go ('premium' version) and QuickOffice Pro HD.
As to how you then get the file to your chosen app will depend upon what the app supports - different apps will have different ways of copying their content to/from a computer e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc.
