Can I control character sets?

Hello all,
I'm creating an epub file for the first time, a full-length book. In a few of the chapters, but not all, after I covert to epub, apostrophes are showing up as multiple odd characters. Here's an example:
"It's not enough" turns into: "It’s not enough"
I learned when I posted this question in the completely wrong forum by mistake (Dreamweaver--sorry Murray!) that there is such a thing as a character set and that what I want to prevent this problem is to use the character set UTF-8. Anyone know if I can control this in InDesign, or if it was maybe lurking in my source Word file and can't be fixed in InDesign? It looks like I can copy-paste normal apostrophes in place of the crazy-looking ones in the epub file (using Sigil) but I'd rather fix it before I export to epub if I can.
Thanks for the help,
sheridanmc

I've done a couple eBooks in InDesign and haven't had this problem at all.
What version of InDesign are you using? Are you using default export settings? What does the output look like in Adobe Digital Editions?
I just did a quick test that included "it's" in a few paragraphs, and it looks line in Adobe Digital Editions, and in the HTML when I open it in TextWrangler.

    hi frank,
thanks a lot for your attention.
i have a problem on persian language.
whereas oracle dosn't support persian(farsi) language,
i use arabic character set for simulation.
in oracle developer6i (forms) i had no problem about displaying farsi fonts on runtime.
but in forms9i that runs forms on web(java applet) i can't use farsi fonts correctly.
for example when i type a word(boilerplate text) on farsi language in form builder i can see it correctly but when i run my forms on web , characters of that word have some displacement.
i want to know that is there any configuration file for solving this problem?
    thanks a lot.

  • How can I control 4 sets of compact RIO system with my host PC?

    Hi all,
    As the title.
I want to control 4 sets of compact RIO system at the same time.
I have written TCPIP connection for two PC before.
But I never program to connect more than one PC.
If I need to connect more than one PC, should I set the PC's connection port different?
Could you provide me an example?
    Thank you a lot.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi StephenCh...,
you can calculate the transfer rate it depends on your network card. You'll find very good examples on that in the example finder, search for tcp/ip. You can use the server code on each of your cRIOs. Use the client to connect to your servers (cRIO), you only need to change the IP. If you need to connect to all at the same time, then you have to change the client program a bit, so that you are able to build four connections.
Where do you have problems? Did you already see the examples?

  • Agent control character set problem

    Hi,
    here's my problem :
i've got the grid that's running on a RHES4 with an agent. On another RHES4, i've got 10g databases that run and another agent.
The repository database is configured like this :
    nsl_language = AMERICAN
    nls_territory = AMERICA
    character set = AL32UTF8
all the uploads from the agent on the RHES4 where the grid is installed are ok.
On the other server, as soon as there's an UTF8 character in a xml file (like " é " ou " ' "), the upload fails and the agent stops.
in the logs, it s clear it comes from this. I've deleted all the occurences of UTF8 characters in the xml file and restarted the upload and it's ok...
I've tested different configurations but without success.
    Any clue ?
    Alivetu

    Thanks for the reply,
NLS LANG is set on the 2 machines with FRENCHFRANCE.WE8ISO8859P15
I've added the line '<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>' at the beginning of the xml file that doesn't work and made a 'emctl upload'....it has passed and the agent has stopped arrived to another UTF8 xml file...
So, it really is a character set problem but where to set it ???

  • How can I control the setting of quicktime x internet connection speed

In apple website, They provides a lot of tutorial videos, But thanks to my internet low bandwidth, only low resolution of video can be seen. At the time of leopard(not snow) and quicktime 7, I found that if I select the bandwidth to "LAN" in quicktime control panel of system preference, the video size went up from 480 to 640 pixelin height (although more loading time..)
Are there any way to control quicktime bandwidth in snow leopard? (quicktime X or quicktime 7 for sowleopard)

    Hi,
    1. How much clients can connect to an access-point (maximum possible vs. recommended)?

  • Diffrent Database character sets?

  • How to change the character set of the D/b

    Hello All,
    When i issue the command
    ALTER DATABASE CHARACTER SET UTF8
It gives me the error that I can only change the character set to a superset of the existing character set.
Is there any way i can change the character set without recreating the database.
    TIA
    Naveen

The existing character set is the basis for the new character set. This is fair enough, because the character set determines how the actual data is stored in the database. Allowing new characters is a minor change: completely re-encoding your entire database is not.
I'm afraid export, recreate and import is your only option.
    Cheers, APC

  • Wich Character Set is used in iWeb?

My web-server uses utf8unicodeic (default). Symbols like ä, ö, ü or € cannot be displayed on the web-pages, written in iWeb 09 v 3.0.1 (9833). These symbols are essential part of speech and text in Europe, especially in German, these characters are necessary...
Does anybody know which character set is used in iWeb?
Can it be changed in iWeb. Ootherwise I can change the character set of the server - but I have to know where to!
    Thanks for your help!

Does anybody know which character set is used in iWeb?
Can it be changed in iWeb.
All iWeb pages are in UTF-8 and this cannot be changed. If your server is really using utf-8, you should not have a problem. It is quite common for servers to force ISO-8859-1 and thus botch iWeb pages. Some fixes for that can be found in the Server Settings section of
    http://homepage.mac.com/thgewecke/iwebchars.html
Also some servers cannot handle special characters in page names, even though having them in the text is OK. That requires different fixes.
Another possible problem is when you use an old ftp app for uploading that doesn't do utf-8 right.
If you will provide the url of your page so I can see what is happening, I can perhaps provide better advice.

  • Import error converting character set

Hi there, the first time i ever post something, so i hope i give enough information so my question can be answered.
I have an oracle 8.1.6 database on Windows NT4. On the same machine i have installed Designer 6.
Everything is working just fine i just can't import a dump file made from repository 6. It's not a full dump, so i first created a whole new repository.
Now, when i want to import the dump file in command prompt, using the imp.exe (present in C:\<oracle_home>\bin), the next error occurs:
IMP-00069: Could not convert to environment national character set's handle
    IMP-00000: Import terminated unsuccessfully.
As the import is due to start, it gives the following message:
import done in WE8iSO8859P1 character set and WE8IS08859P1 NCHAR character set.
    Then the error occurs.
Now i wonder if this can be solved. I cannot see in the dump file what character set was used there. I did not make the export myself. Is there a way that i can convert the character set in the dumpfile or something? Or should i solve this problem by making changes in the database?
Thx for your help, i am trying to solve this problem myself for over a week now and i'm getting tired of it.

    Hi friend,
Same Problem i have faced, and i found that this is due to only the Version mismatch, u attempting to import data from higher version to lower one.
Just check at ur end also.
    Bye

  • Specifying character set on application import

    hi --
I'm running into a problem that I think has to do w/ character sets.
I'm using non-breaking spaces in numerous LOVs; they're entered in as ALT +0160 on the keypad. These non-breaking spaces work great in the development environment of APEX (eg in the development app), and now I need to export/import the app to a production environment, which is runtime only.
The NLS_CHARACTERSET on both the development and production databases is US7ASCII.
When I import the app into the runtime installation of APEX I simply run the export file in sqlplus as the schema user.
(It has been scp'd over, as a text file, from the development server.)
The application imports and runs fine, but the non breaking spaces are displayed as garbage characters.
I did some testing on apex.oracle.com. I noticed that when I specify character set of unicode utf-8 on import,
the non-breaking spaces work properly. When I specify US-ASCII, I get the same garbage I'm getting in
    my production environment.
When I export the app from the development environment, the character set is fixed (cannot be changed) to unicode utf-8. But I'm not doing anything to set the character set on import (don't know that I can...), and I wonder if it's adopting the database default character set of ASCII.
How can I get the imported app to use the desired character set? Am I going to have to convert this to a development
environment just so I can specify the character set on import, or is there a way to do it in sqlplus?
I'm not entirely sure I'm on the right track... but maybe someone has ideas how to get these non breaking spaces working in the production environment.
If access to my workspace on apex.oracle.com would be helpful, let me know.
    Thanks,
    Carol

I forgot to mention that, from what I've recently read, ASCII does not have a representation for non breaking spaces... so the behavior I'm experiencing is at least consistent with that...

  • Greek Character Set

I am a little confused with documentation about character sets.
In chapter 9 it says that "The database is created using Unicode(AL32UTF8) character set, which is suitable for global data in any language." but in Chapter 10.3 Supported Character Sets it says that "Table 3 lists the supported character sets in Oracle Database XE. The list is ordered alphabetically in each language group." and refers to a lot of character sets.
If Database character set is only AL32UTF8 then why the client can use all character sets described in Table3 of chapeter 10.3?

Because the database character set is just what you use to store data internally. It means that every character that can be mapped to a UTF-8 character can be stored and that is why the number of supported character sets is bigger. So your client can talk ISO8859-15 (for example). Every character in that CS can be mapped to a character in utf-8 and as long as the database knows about this mapping, it will be supported.

  • Convert custom character set of nonunicode system to standard character set

    hi all,
I'm a BI consultant and have the following problem:
we want to load attribute data (products, customers,...) from R3 into BI via standard extractors.
R3 is a non-unicode system, and some products (or customers) use a custom character set Z2.
When we extract this data to BI (a unicode system) we get an error (tRFC) saying he can't confert certain values. SAP says that he can't convert character set Z2 to the standard character set 4102.
Converting the R3 system to a unicode system would be the solution, but is not an option... unfortunatly...
Please advice, give gidelines,... because this problem is really a showstopper for our project...
    Thx!!!
