Can I control how much of my back up disk time machine uses?

I bought a 1tb backup drive and want to save my photos to it. However, I also want to use it to back up my macbook pro. I was wondering if I could actually do that, using it for both purposes, or if when the drive was full, due to the backups, will it no longer let me save my photos there. Or is there a way to only have time machine save one backup at a time? I don't need to back it up all that often.
Thanks!

Time Machine will back up until it fills the drive. The bigger the drive, the farther back in time you can go. What you could do is to create 2 partitons on the drive, one for Time Machine and the other a regular old Mac OS Extended(Journaled). Personally, I'd have at least twice the capacity of the computer's drive allocated as Time Machine (so a computer with a 250 gb drive would get at least a 500 gb Time Machine volume).
You set up partitions with Disk Utility. Set them both up as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). When you first connect with Time Machine it'll ask you if you to choose the drive and want to dedicate that to TM. Choose one of the partitions and you're good.

I'd recommend staring over, Pondini has created an excellent guide on how to use Setup Assistant. I'd recommend begin reading Pondini Setup Assistant tips where he talks about "Second Chance." Assuming your Time Machine backup is sound the restore  should be very smooth.

  • How can I restore stickies which were not backed up on Time Machine?

I accidently deleted some text on a stickie note.  That note was not backed up in Time Machine. That text is also gone from the Stickies Database.  Everything that I read online leads me to believe that I can find this deleted text in this file... com.apple.Stickies.plist.  Is that correct?
If so how do I retrieve this text?  Is there a tutorial somewhere?
The notes online say that I can open the file in Omni Outliner and then use NVU to convert it to text.  How does that work?
When I open the file in Omni Outliner, I get this...
Now what do I do?  Any help, or suggestions on how to recover this data, either using the method described above or otherwise, would be helpful.
    Thank You.

Take a look at Pondini's excellent Time Machine data ...

  • I Can't Play .MP4 and .mkv Files Backed up in Time Machine

I backed up My Macbook to an external hard drive in my passport / Time Machine.  I am attempting to play both .mp4 and mkv files in quicktime and vlc respectively.  They worked when they were on my computer, but I they won't open now.  I even tried to copy them to my computer and play them that way.  When I click on info, it shows the file size, and it seems normal.  I updated both Quicktime and vlc, and it still doesn't work.  Please help.

You wrote in your first post:

  • How to Advice/help on setting up Time Machine using 3rd party NAS please

I have a mixed home network with both Macs and PCs.  All use a NAS device (Buffalo) to store data.  I then back up to another drive which I attach via a USB socket on a PC once a week using Acronis.  This is a 24-carat pain.  I have another NAS device and would like to use Time Machine to back up (a) The Buffalo (b) The Home Folders on the Macs.  Actually I haven't managed anything (a) Time Machine only looks for wireless devices (b) Any documentation I've read suggests Terminal commands which might or might not work, sparse images which I don't understand and the rest...  I understood from reading that this can work but I can't see how.  Does anyone have a "Painting by numbers" scheme for making this work?  TM seems such a clever system it seems a shame to have to resort to a normal back-up program.  Thanks for any help!

some NAS(es) can be used as destination for time machine backups, however, time machine will not back up networked drives such as a NAS.
a 3rd party tool like ChronoSync may be able to back up NAS (A) to NAS (B) but i haven't tested this.

  • Can I restore a iPhone back up from time machine and if so how?

I have upgraded my iphone to IOS 7 this morning. However as I was backing up my phone, the cable I was using was removed from the macbook.
I now have a iPhone back up that is corrupted, and when i try and restore my settings to the new IOS7 upgraded phone, it will not allow my old settings to be placed on the phone.
I am therefore thinking of using an old back up from Time Machine, but do not know how to access itunes from time machine. Everytime I try and enter iTunes from my Time Machine vault it says Mac OSX requires the application and therefore cannot be restored.
Please help or tell me what I should be doing instead.
I have a feeling I will lose my app data and have to manually sort my home screens. Luckily all my contacts, emails, photos etc are synced to iCloud, but the back up of my iphone isn't as I don;t have the upgraded space on ICloud and have a iPhone thta has 16GB on it.
Cheers in anticipation of your help

Hi Lawrence. Thanks so much for that advice - I'm really grateful. I hope you don't mind me asking a couple more questions: I have found that folder via Finder - I clicked on Library then App Support then Mobile Sync and within that, there's a folder called Backup and within that, 4 files. I also tried accessing it via the Go/go to folder method you suggested (in case that revealed more which remain hidden unless I use your route) but I couldn't make that route work.
I presume I'm looking at the correct files but please advise me if it's still possible that I'm not.
I had already tried to look at these backup files in Time Machine. They appear to be backed up, going back a year. If I can restore one from yesterday, that should solve my problem. However I've looked through them randomly going back a month or more, and they all seem to have been created in 2013, and last modified then. Only one of the files has a more recent 'last modified' date. But surely Time Machine has captured each backup of the iPhone going back over time?   I'm baffled.
I hope the above makes sense. I'd be really grateful for any further advice.

I also tried resetting settings all to no avail ...I looked up some advice and watched utube video advice on how to fix without success..
The volume control button on side does not work ,I got the iPad last August and wonder if it is a fault that means I must return it for replacement from where it was purchased ?

The Retrospect you used way back when is no longer around. The company was sold and that company produced a new version of Retrospect - Retrospect 8.x
So, as you've been told, you would have to be running a Tiger system with an old version of Retrospect software (5.x or 6.x - you would need to know) assuming you can find the software.
As best I can remember you cannot extract files from a Retrospect backup except using the software since Retrospect did not normally make a file by file backup rather it created an archive of the files in the backup. I'm assuming that the EMC/Retrospect people have told you that old Retrospect backups are not accessible by Retrospect 8.x?

  • Control how much of an event shows in Month view

How do you control how much of the body text of an event shows in month view? Sometimes it only shows part, and I want it to show more.

    Hi Erich,
You can call a method of another Controller directly this way:
    sap.ui.controller("namespace.Controllername").method();
Another, and more decoupled, option would be to use eventing and sap.ui.core.EventBus. You can find more info on this SCN thread:

  • How can i determine how much data an app is using

on an iphone5, how can i determine how much data an app is using and or which apps are the biggest data users?  do all apps always use wifi when a wifi is connected or do some apps still use cellular data even if wifi is connected?

Try Settings > General > Usage > Storage > check here.
To test if app is using cellular data instead of Wi-Fi, switch Airplane mode: ON and switch Wi-Fi: ON manually.
