Can I control Power PC iMacs running 10.4 or 10.5 from iMac running 10.8 or 10.9?

I need to use Apple Remote Desktop to observe/control 10 Power PC iMacs running OS X 10.4.11 (or 10.5 if I upgrade them). My admin macchine is a 2013 iMac running OS X 10.8.5. Is the current ARD version compatible with the older client iMacs? Thanks in advance.

I have one Power PC machine, running 10.5.8, ARD client 3.4.     Controlled it from  MLion and Mavs.  using  current version of ARD.
No experiences with 10.4.

My "remote" can't control my Apple TV, however apple tv still received signal from "remote" . Before that I have to press and hold the menu button, then the "remote" icon appeared on the screen.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Your Apple TV may have become paired with another remote. Hold the remote close to and pointed at the Apple TV, hold down the menu and Rewind buttons together for 6 seconds or until you see a broken chain icon on screen.

Make sure your iMac is on 10.6.8 or higher and your iTunes is up to date.  If it is, then restart your computer, open iTunes, then plug in your device.  If it still is not showing up, follow the steps listed here: iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Mac OS X

  • How can I control 3 stepper motors w/ amplifier by sending TTL pulses from DIO96

We have NI PCI-DIO-96 board and we have 3 stepper motors with amplifier and encoders. We want to control the motors by sending TTL pulses directly from the DIO-96 board to the amplifiers. Is this possible? What would you recommend if this is not a good approach? Thanks in advance.
    Roman Zeylikovich

    Roman,
Thank you for contacting National Instruments. While using a motion controller would be the recommended approach for any type of motion application, you may be able to use your DIO board to generate a TTL pulse train to control the step and direction inputs of your drive and motor. You will need to make sure that the current sinking and sourcing specification for the DIO-96 fits your stepper motor. That board is not designed to source very much current at all so this is one issue you will need to verify. Also, this board does not have any counter/timer logic that can handle quadrature encoder inputs.
Again, this digital device is probably not the best solution to control a stepper motor, but, depending on your hardware, could be configured to work proper
ly. The PCI-7334 is a low-cost stepper motion controller that can control up to 4 axes and is designed to easily accommodate these types of applications. You can browse through more information on our Motion controller boards at the following website:

  • How to play itunes music library from iMac using apple remote? Can only use my iPhone as a REMOTE to play on itunes to Apple TV!!

how can i how can I play itunes library on my IPHONE4 from IMAC using APPLE REMOTE? I can only use my iPhone 4 as a REMOTE to play itunes from IMac to APPLE TV.

You cannot.  The remote app is exclusively for remotely controlling an apple tv for playback of a library on your computer.  If you want to play your computer's music on your iPhone you just use home sharing on both devices and play the music in the Music app on your phone, not using the Remote app on your phone.

  • Using APex with Airtunes from an iMAc can you control playing tunes?

Hi, got an imac at Xmas, am looking into Airport stuff, and found this APex, with wireless play of iTunes music, Ive been looking into the Philips streamium and stuff doe playing tunes.
My question is once setup from your iMac to play music wirelessly how can you control it? Ive read the manual but doesnt say anything. So can all you do is press shuffle on the iMac and then it plays everything?
I know you could do playlists and stuff, but I have all my music, kids music, wife's music in my library, so theres a real mixture, and Im sick of listening to High School Musical!!
So can you contol the song playing, ie skip etc with it?
    cheers

iTunes needs to be running in order to stream music to the Airport Express so therefore - no - the Mac running iTunes cannot be in sleep mode. It must be powered up and running, though you could blank the screen if you wish.
Why did Apple not build the function of the Keyspan Express remote into the Airport Express. Likely because it would have increased the cost of the product by 50%, while at the same time adding a feature most people would be happy to live without - in other words, not a great idea from a product marketing perspective.

    Hi,

Many of your points are totally legitimate.
    This one, however, is not:
…To put it another way, the design of the site seems to be geared much more towards its regular users than those the site is supposedly trying to "help"…
The design and management of the forums for more than five years have driven literally dozens of the most valuable contributors and "regulars" away from the forums—permanently.
The only conclusion a prudent, reasonable person can draw from this state of affairs is that Adobe consciously and deliberately want to kill these forums by attrition—without a the PR hit they would otherwise take if they suddenly just shut them down.

There are no viruses currently affecting the Mac but there is something called Flashback which is malware that has been doing the rounds and affected many Mac users. Apple have released some updates to Java that should remove it and improve protection. Run Software Update to see if there is anything for downloading.
A few precautions that can help prevent your Mac becoming infected:
If you use Flash only download it directly from Adobe.
In all web browsers disable Java (but do leave Javascript on as that's something else).
In all web browsers make sure downloaded files aren't set to automatically open after downloading.
Consider disabling Java completely (launch Java Preferences in the Utilities folder and disable it - you'll likely rarely, if ever need it. If you do just turn it on and off again when your done).

If they have set up port forwarding for you already then that is different.  In that case, then you could be experiencing the bug with the most recent release of ARD (3.7.2) and in particular ARD 3.7.2 and Yosemite ARD version 3.8 clients.  It has been reported numerous times in the forums and to Apple that since 3.7.2, clients are frequently unavailable to connect to despite there being no network issue between the remote computer and client computer.  I have not seen anyone report it who was working from outside the LAN to inside the LAN, but I have the same issue with a number of my own computers that are simply on a different subnet, so it stands rot reason that it would happen from a port forwarding location.
I am sometimes able to resolve the issue locally by SSH connecting into the client computer using Terminal on my admin machine and restarting or relaunching the ARD agent on the remote device, then trying to connect to it again after about 30 seconds.
The Terminal commands for this procedure are as follows, though you might need to include a port number from outside the LAN:
    First:
    ssh ipaddress -l adminusername
    (example: ssh 192.168.1.1 -l macadmin)
    Second:
    sudo /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/k ickstart -restart -agent
After that, waiting about 30 seconds and trying to observe or control usually works, though the computer may still fail to show an online or lit-up status indicator.

I hear a lot of disk I/O from my iMac 1TB drive.  How can I see apps may be running in background?  Time Machine is not running.

If you wnat to see the applications that are running, open the Activity Monitor application (it's in /Applications/Utilities). After opening it, select "All Processes" above "Show" in the toolbar, and you will see all the processes that are running.
I/O errors often happen on a damaged hard drive. If you are receiving that error, you should make a backup with Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner as soon as possible and take your Mac to an Apple Store or reseller to get another hard disk.
If the warranty is void, you can try installing it yourself, but note that there are some iMacs which are very difficult to have the hard drive replaced. Search the steps in iFixit > http://www.ifixit.com
