Can I control the "open with" options in apps on the ipad?

I have a school loop app that allows access to files stored in a remote folder, similar to dropbox. I can see the files and when I select one I have an option to choose which app to used to open a document (it might be a word doc, a pdf, a ppt, etc.). The app options that show as available are not the apps that will open documents, however, I do have apps on my ipad that will open they - but they do not show up, ie: PDF Expert, Quick Office, Pages, etc. Can I control what apps appear in "open with" dialogue boxes?
Thanks for any help.

Simple answer: no.

  • How do i get the "open with" option back for pdfs after accidentally hitting the save option which now automatically saves any pdf?

Normally when I click on a pdf I would get an option to "Open With" or Save. I usually just opened pdfs first. I accidentally clicked on the Save option in this dialog box and now when I click on any pdf it automatically asks me where I want to save it. I want to get the "open With" option back, because I don't necessarily want to save a copy of every pdf.

Mountain Lion was released in 2012, so I suppose there might be advice in old threads or on the Apple forums if you don't get a response here right away.

  • When right clicking an image in Bridge, the "open with" option doesn't display Fireworks

This is not the case with all the files, but some.  For example, there was a .jpg file that I couldn't open in Fireworks when right clicking and choosing "open with", although Illustrator and Photoshop were both listed.  Note: I have Cs5 Extended.  Thank you in advance.

The "open with" menu is set in the OS, not Bridge, so open Windows Explorer and work on it from there to add what you want.

  • Why is the "open with" option always grayed out when I click on a file link?

For example, when accessing an email account with firefox and I click on an .mp3 attachment the "open with" choice is always grayed out. This issue is not exclusive to email attachments rather all file links that I click on any site give me the same result. I am using MAC OS X Mavericks.
How can I restore the "open with" selection?
    Thanks for your time,

You can try rename (or delete) the mimeTypes.rdf file in the Firefox profile folder to reset all file actions.
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/File_types_and_download_actions#Resetting_download_actions
You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Director: Show Folder (Linux: Open Director; Mac: Show in Finder)

  • Javaws not an option in the opens with

I am not sure why but even though Java Web Start is installed(Windows 2000) on the PC javaws in the opens with for the jnlp file type. I can go and choose it manually but that does not help because. We have an application that checks to see is Web Start is installed before it launches.
So my question is does anyone know why javaws would not show up in the opens with option? I have tried to remove all versions of java and reinstall just the 1.4.2 version that we are using and it does not seem to change anything.

I will explain a little more about Windows:
If you get the *.jnlp file via Internet Explorer, then the web server must return a MIME type of "application/x-java-jnlp-file" or web start probably will not work (I have not actually tried all possibilites).
IE then looks up (I am pretty sure):
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\application/x-java-jnlp-file
    Gets: Extension: .jnlp
    then
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jnlp
    (Default): JNLPFile
    Content Type: application/x-java-jnlp-file
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\JNLPFile\Shell\Open\Command
    (Default): blah\javaws.exe
It then goes through these few more steps (I do not know the exact order but you get the idea) and launches javaws.exe anyway.
Compare this to the simpler (but private) configuration of:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Netscape\Netscape Navigator\Viewers
    application/x-java-jnlp-file : blah \javaws.exe
They both do the same thing, but Windows abstracts it out so that explorer.exe and iexplorer.exe are using the same information. Some people like it. Some people hat it. I am pretty blah about it, as long as I can understand it somehow and fix it when it breaks.

  • After I updated iOS 5 can´t use the "open with" for mail attachments.

After I updated iOS 5 on my iPad 2, I can not use the "open with" for mail attachments. The option is not appearing.
For example, when I try to open an .wmv attachment the iOS 5 doesn´t show "open with". Before update, I was able to open with "AZUL" software.
    Can anyone help me?

You did say that the option does not appear at all in mail no matter which file type you want to open correct? I can only assume that something went corrupt in the update that affected your settings and that's why this option no longer appears. For experimental purposes, you could try emailing a PDF to yourself and see if that will allow you to use the Open in function in the mail app.
If nobody else jumps into this discussion with a different idea, then maybe you should try restoring your iPad. The best way to do so is - first backup the device - and then restore to factory settings and then you can try restoring from a backup at the end of the process.
However, if one of your settings is corrupt, the backup will be corrupt as well. It may be that you will have to restore to factory settings and then start all over again - adding your apps and content back to the device to get the best results. I would certainly use this process as a last resort. Restoring from a backup maybe all that you need to do.

  • Removing multiple entries in the 'Open With' menu

When I right mouse click on a file, I get the Open With option. On selecting this I get a huge list of options - a lot of them duplicates. How do I remove them?

You have to rebuild the LaunchServices database. You can do this in the terminal, for instructions see:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20031215144430486
or you can use a program that claims it can do it for you (never used it myself):

  • [SOLVED] firefox "open with" option missing from d

Has anyone noticed that, in firefox 2, the "Save/OpenWith/Cancel dialog has changed to only "Save/Cancel" (with no option to open the file with a particular application)?
For instance, clicking on the first "Excel" file type on this Web page only gives me a Save or Cancel option.  With firefox 1.5 there was an additional option for "Open With".  In other words, there is no way I can instantly open the document with Open Office using a temporary location.  I have  to first save it to my home directory and then open it with Open Office or something.
When using firefox 2 with Web-based email clients like Yahoo! Mail, it's annoying that I can't just instantly open attachments (like PDFs).  Instead, I have to first save everything.
Is there something I can change in about:config to get back the 1.5 behavior?

No, I already checked my firefox preferences.  The preferences explain the behavior of Excel files (set to always save).   But, for me, the "Open with" option went missing for PDF attachments and some other unknown binary file types.
I have PDFs set to open with acroread in FF preferences, so that seems okay.  Nothing in the filetypes configuration has changed.  In fact, the PDFs work okay (with acroread plugin) when I click a PDF link on a random web page.  It just doesn't work in email attachments  like in gmail (and, it used to before).  It used to be that it would give me the "Open With" dialog and I'd open the document with acroread (external application, not the plugin).  Now, it forces me to save or cancel.  I noticed it happens with some other unknown binary file types, too (I thought these were also supposed give me the "Open with" option).

  • Lost start menu icons and not listed in right click open with option +more.

Weird. I need help. Quicktime 7.3.0.70 only--Start menu lost it's icons in the quicktime folder. When right clicking video files, the "open with" option no longer displays quicktime as a program. And lastly, open an avi file or even mpg and the program stops responding without even getting to play the file. I've uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times but can't seem to fix these issues. Can anyone help? Thanks. This just seemed to happen out of the blue.

I also have lost the icons for Quicktime in my start menu under Windows XP. The icons actually work when you do click them but the icons are not loaded. Everything functions fine and it's the newest version of Quicktime installed. I also have the newest version of iTunes installed. I ended up manually adding my own icons on the start menu as I've uninstalled and reinstalled Quicktime several times to no avail and even attempted to flush the windows icon cache. No go. This just started happening recently.
It's not happening on my WinXP Pro laptop however, although I've yet to upgrade to the latest version of iTunes+Quicktime.
*Right-Click Open With Menu still functions properly and the icon image is appearing correctly in that menu.

  • Open With option

I used to like the Open With option for PSE7 when viewing in My Pictures in Vista but this is no longer an option with PSE10 - can it be restored please?

It’s working OK. You may need to click on Choose Default Program and then navigate to the Editor exe file.
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 10\PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe
N.B. on 64 bit systems navigate to Program Files (x86)

  • Need to reset the Open With application for finder folders

So while making an Aperture Vault the app crashed and I got a corrupted vault on my drive which I could not delete. I was able to Get Info>Show Package Contents and delete some of the contents to make it take up less HD space. In the process of doing that to the vault, I accidentally changed the Open With option to Finder, and somehow the Change All button got clicked. So now ALL of my Aperture Vaults open with the Finder by default and appear as folders on my desktop. Folders do not have the "Open With" option, so now I can't change it back so that the Finder views the vaults as Aperture files, and not Finder folders.
Anyone know how I can reset my "Open With" preferences?

Can you right-click to "Get Info" on any file?
The info window will allow you to change the "Open with" and "change all".
I don't know the effect on File Vault on the option but if you can, try it.
Deleting contents of an app bundle can create problems, unless you know exactly what you're deleting.

  • I have no "open with" option for downloads

I click on a file within a website to open it, but the pop up box does not have the "open with.." option, only the save option. The file type is a text document with the extension ".prg" which is associated in my Windows Folder Options to open with Wordpad. Within Firefox Tools/Options/Applications, this file type does not show up, so I cannot change it. I read elsewhere where this is blamed on MIME type in the HTML header, but Microsoft Internet Explorer gets it right every time, only Firefox does not recognize the file type.
As an aside, the same site has files with the extension".chg" that I open with Notepad. Firefox gives the "open with" option for these files, with Notepad as the defauld, but the "Always open with" is greyed out. Not that I care, as the default is what I want, but....

Firefox goes by the mimetype and not the file type as IE does.

  • Adding entries to the ``Open With'' List

hi, when you right click on a file, there is an option to open the file with an application other than the default application viz. the ``Open With'' option which brings up a list of applications. How do I add an application so that it appears on this list so that I won't have to click on ``Other..'' to find the app? Cheers.
