Can I convert to DNG after I have edited all my original Raw files in Lightroom?

I'm asking because i've become convinced to use DNG's instead of NEF's and RW2's from my Nikon and Panasonic cameras. My main reason is future compatibility.
I have already edited all my NEF's & RW2's from the past 2 years in their native file format in Lightroom 4. Is it still ok to convert them to DNG now (even though they have been already edited (non-destructively of course)).

Also, why can't Windows Explorer show thumbnail previews of DNG's on my Windows 8.1 64bit Pc. I assume is has something to do with not having the DNG codec. However, on Adobe's website it says their DNG codec only works on Windows 7. Any ideas?

Yes, you can convert your images to DNG at any time. But are you absolutely sure you want to do that? You won't be able to use any Canon or Nikon software to work on those DNG files if you ever find a need to do that. And I really wonder about the "future compatibility" issue. But the choice is yours, of course.
You will have to do a Google search for a DNG codec. It will have to be installed in order for you to see your DNG content in Windows Explorer. You worry about future compatibility, but you have to be concerned about compatibility now in order to use DNG files.

I have edited in Photoshop a RAW file from LR

I've edited a RAW file from LR catalogue by 'Edit in Photoshop'. I've saved the edited file both as a TIF file and as a JPEG but only the RAW file and TIF files are visible in the LR catalogue. When I right click to 'show in Finder', there is the JPEG file in the same folder. Why can't I see it in the LR catalogue please?

If you go into your Lightroom Preferences and look at the External Editing tab, it will show you what the settings are for sending a file to Photoshop. More than likely you are set to TIFF. So Edit in Photoshop will create a TIFF image that includes the current Lightroom adjustments. This file is automatically added to the catalog. Once in Photoshop you can do all your editing and then click Save will save the TIFF out and it will show up in your Lightroom catalog. If you do something else like Save As or Save for Web, then those files will not end up in the catalog.
If you did happen to save those other versions to the same folder as your Raw then in Lightroom you can Rt Click that folder and select Synchronize and it will add them in. If you saved them somewhere else then your only option is to Import them into your catalog
Very common practice. Especially for those that want to keep all client files together and then send everything (catalog, raw, TIFF's, PSD's, JPEG's) off to an archive drive.

Converting to DNG after editing.

Is there any way to convert raw files to DNG after they have been edited and preserve all the edits in DNG?
I have to say I never converted anything to DNG before. I just tried to convert a few files and all the edits have been discarded.

Yes, just use the Library menu command to convert to DNG.
LR keeps the same development and other metadata instructions as it had for the proprietary raw image.
If you want to this outside LR, you need to save it to xmp, so do a ctrl s after the conversion.
What exactly did you lok at when you said the edits had been discarded?

I have a number of CR2 (RAW) files that I have made adjustments to in Lightroom. I would like to use the DNG Converter (standalone) to convert to DNG.
Usually, I convert to DNG before making adjustments...will my adjustments to the CR2 files be applied to the DNGs after conversion (outside of Lightroom using DNG Converter)?

YTou don't want to use the dng converter. If you use DNG converter, you will lose all your adjustments and Lightroom will lose track of your files. Just use Lightroom to do the dng conversion. That will make sure the changes are kept and you will not lose the link in Lightroom. The option is in the Library menu. There is no difference in the generated dng file, so it is far more convenient to do it in Lightroom.

Never. My advice is to if you really want to use dng (there are a few good reasons to do it, one is reduced file size, but also a lot of good reasons against it), to back up the original RAW files first in a separate location if you don't already have a backup. You might need the RAW file later. If you embed the RAW file in the CR2, you end up with very large files (about double the size of the original file), which completely negates the filesize advantage of dng, which is without embedded raw about 10-25%. You will be able to extract the RAW files later if need arises though which might be convenient but absolutely not necessary.

Here to help shed some additional light on this case, jdondr. I also own a Maxx. With your phone, if you access the Gallery, there should be a folder named: Messaging. If you look at the upper left hand corner, you should see a drop down box. Is it currently set to Albums?

Can I remove Photoshop CS2 after I have upgraded from CS2 to CS5? I upgraded from CS2 to CS5 quite a while ago and I have never removed CS2. Will it affect CS5 to remove the old CS2 if it was an upgrade?

If I were you I would just delete the installed Adobe CS2 folder. Adobe CS2 uninstaller my remove settind CS5 made to your system after CS2. The CS2 uninstaller may try to restore settings to a point in time where there was no Photoshop installed on your system. If you do a CS un-install you may need to then Install CS5 on top of itself the update cs5 for the install will not have the updates you will be back at CS5 level .

Convert to DNG after import?

Is anyone aware of a good way (workflow, applescript, plugin?) to convert raw files to DNG after they're already in Aperture? In other words, is there a way--like Lightroom--to convert the files but otherwise preserve adjustments, versions, and other meta-data?

if the DNG file could not be displayed in Aperture, it means that the original RAW file format wasn't supported. IIRC, there are two types of RAW files, those that serve as a wrapper around the original RAW file and a "linearalized" format, where the DNG converter attempts to convert the manufacturer specific RAW data into DNG image data. Aperture doesn't support the linearalized format for sure and Aperture only supports DNG wrappers for file formats it supports natively.
at this point i think that advocating DNG conversion on a broad scale is a bit premature. even after several years of promotion by adobe, there is still no industry-wide adoption of the format. camera manufacturers need to start writing DNG right to the storage cards, then it will begin to become a true standard.

What is the Word file? From a PC?
What version of Word and what is the file extension?
What is it about the text that is different?
When you say fond do you mean font/typeface? If so what font, and is it on your Mac? Is there something special/different about this font?

Sure. If you use a field (button, text field) to display the text, the Mouse Up script of the Yes check box could be:

Change "button1" to the actual name of the field and "Yes" is the export value of the Yes check box. You can use whatever you want, and you'll probably want to make the button read-only as well.

How can I convert the download.m4a and Info.plist into the right audio file

The topic is actually the problem that I have.
I have bought music and it was downloaded successful (all of it) but iTunes had a strange freeze while converting the files into the right audio file. Some files were converted but after the freeze no more.
I'm now left with these .tmp folders in the downloads folder which have the download.m4a and Info.plist files.
My iTunes is able to play these download.m4a files, but they show no information and covers and this is really annoying. I could write and change it all by myself, but than I would still miss some information (and covers).
Is there any way for me to convert or combine these files?
Note: I'm not able to restart any downloads, because they were successful.

Thanks for the help, but this is not the problem.
It's hard to describe the problem, but I'll try it again, this time with pictures.
I was left with the following folders in the iTunes Downloads folder.

After moving the audio files in iTunes a bit I get this.

As you can see no other Information for the download.m4a than the length.

For that Nikon model you need ACR 8.3 that means CS6 or CC. Or you can download the DNG converter convert your Nikon RAW files to Adobe RAW files. And then process the Adobe RAW files with CS5 ACR version 6.7

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
iTunes
Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
Bonjour
Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.

You would need at least CS3 with ACR 4.6 to natively edit NEFs from a D90 in PS:

It might also work to use the DNG Converter 4.6 or newer to convert the NEF files to DNGs and then those might open in your older CS2 ACR, but I’m not sure, since it’s a 9 year old program I haven’t used in years.

Hi,
You need version 7.4 or higher to read raw files from, a D7100. Unfortunately, ACR 7.4 is not compatible with PSE 10.
You need to either
- update to a new version of PSE or
- download the DNG converter - use it to conver your NEF files to DNG files which can then be read by PSE 10.
