Can I copy .dat files in Quicktime?
Hi..I received 2 .dat files which play in Quicktime. They are pieces of 2 movies which were converted from Video and given to me on a cd disc with a wesite.
I want to edit the movies and also lighten them up, because they is very dark.
I am wondering if I would need to do it in Quicktime, since it is the only thing it appears to play in. Or can i do it in iMovie or Final Cut Pro? And how would I get them in there, make a duplicate (in order to save these originals) and then do editing and use them both for the website, as a mpeg4 or 3 and also as files for output to cd's? Can I get them out of the .dat file format?
Obviously, I know nothing about this. Thank you.

Streamclip is an application that is used to convert mpegs to other formats. It is not a format itself. Since the video has no sound you may not need Streamclip. Change the extension from .dat to .mpg and see if your other applications will then recognize it.
Some versions of iMovie will accept mpegs for input although they do convert the mpeg to DV Stream and open as an iMovie. If your version of iMovie doesn't do that then use QT Pro to convert it to DV Stream and then you should be able to edit it in iMovie and "Share" as some other format. DV Stream is not practical as a format for web posting, as it uses too much filespace -- almost 7 megabytes per second.
You mention losing quality as a concern. That is always going to happen if you convert from one compressed format to another. However, I am not aware of any other way to change the brightness that would affect how it would look when viewed on another computer.

I check free space at both server and client side, they are very sufficient.

Can't copy any file to/from iomega 1TB home media network CE other than through FTP
Hi, since few days ago I can't copy any file to or from iomega using Windows Explorer on my PC or any file explorer ony my android phone. I can acces the drive but when I try to copy something to the drive, a 'copying' window pops up and shows "estimating" in ETA and often freezes. Same goes with my phone, it just shows 0B/s as speed. I can however copy files to/from using ftp connection. Do you have any ideas what's wrong? I didn't change anything, it just stopped working. Also, will factory reset delete all data from the drive? EDIT. Turns out I can only copy FROM the drive using ftp. So at this point there is no way for me to move anything to the nas.

With the majority of support incidents I have dealt with, odd behavior like this can usually be attributed to a failing drive.
The firmware runs on the drive, so, if it is beginning to fail it can cause unexpected behavior.
I would backup anything from the NAS that you wish to keep, then run the factory reset (it is data destructive), and then try to re-load the NAS. -

How can I copy mp3 files from my Itunes library to an SD card for use in a non-apple phone? I can physically copy the tunes as mp3's but the phone does not seem to be able to play all of them. Do I need to copy an entire album or can I just pick & choose individual songs? The phone is question is an LG running who knows what for an operating system.
AAC is Advanced Audio Coding. Basically it's a format that sounds better than MP3 but doesn't take up as much space as a lossless format (like you'd have on a CD). More than likely you've had that encoding turned on when you ripped your music into itunes (it's the default encoder). Therefore your LG phone won't play them.
You need to turn off the AAC format by going to the iTunes menu, Preferences, General (at the top), then clicking the "Import Preferences" button. Change the AAC Encoder to MP3 Encoder. After that you'll have to make MP3 copies of your songs by right clicking them and selecting "Create MP3 Version." You'll get a copy of the song that should transfer to your SD card and have MP3 encoding. Hopefully your phone will play that. -
Message title says it: Can you copy/paste files from the Finder to Mail in Lion, or drag them onto the Mail icon in the Dock to create a new message and attach the files to it?

One further question, if I may: in Panther (which is where I've aggregated nearly 7 years of mail), if you copy more than one file in the Finder, switch to Mail, and paste the files into a new message, only the file names paste in. If you copy one file and paste it into a Mail message, you get the file, not just the name. Is that still true, or has that (IMHO) bug been fixed since 10.3.9? -

Any help appreciatedI had this problem. Double clicking the WMV file produced the message you had. However, if I open by dragging the WMV file onto the QuickTime X icon in the dock it did indeed open.
I then looked at the WMV's Get Info window and found that it was set to open in WMV Player by default. Obviously I do not have WMV Player installed. The drop down menu on this setting did have QT Player as the other option. When I changed the option to QT Player as default the "Change All" button became active. Previously it had been greyed out. Things have been OK since, but I have not tried it on any new WMV files. -

I have a batch that is copying a file to "%public%\desktop\" (windows 7) folder through a logon GPO (GPO from user configuration).
Everytime I try, I have an "access denied". I know it is because UAC and I don't want to disable it.
Through explorer.exe, I can copy this file with no problem with this same account.
How can I copy a file to such folder through group policy please ?
I dont want to use GPP as the script is used on WinXP too and I dont have the hotfix to support GPP on this operating systems.

Since you are copying to a non-user specific-directory, I'd recommend
using a startup script instead...

Can not copy any file or empty the trash

I'm using a Macbook (white) with OSX 10.6.4 and am having an extremely annoying problem which has three symptoms:
1. I *can not empty the trash* (safely or not) at all.
2. I *can not copy any file*, anywhere.
3. I *can not move anything to the "Applications"* folder.
I try restarting the computer, repairing the permissions, running the latest version of Onyx and so on, but nothing works. I always get the following error message (when copying a file or emptying the trash)
"The operation can't be completed because you don't have the permission to access some of the items".
And this even though I repaired the permissions three times today.
To be honest, this makes my Mac pretty useless, and is very frustrating.
Can anybody help? I've browsed a lot of other threads about this, tried everything, but to no avail.
Come on, this is my first Mac, don't tell me I have to reinstall the OS from zero, Windows-style.Those are the normal permissions but if you are logged in as admin, hit the unlock button and enter your password they should no longer be greyed out.
You can try chmoding them from root through the terminal if you are up for it. I'd also try booting up in SafeMode and seeing if that allows access. -

HT3775 can't play wmv file on quicktime?
I can't play .wmv files on quicktime. I installed both QuickTime MPEG2 and Flip4Mac WMV hoping that this would solve the problem but it did not. When trying to play any audio .wmv file I get an error box stating "the document (filename).wmv could not be opened. The movie is not in a format the QuickTime Player understands. You may need to install additional software to open this type of file". Anyone know what I might need here?
Hmm, Perian should provide flv playback in Quicktime. Maybe you need to update Perian? I used to always use Perian but since upgrading to Lion I have not installed it and now rely on VLC for non-apple standard media playback. Deluxe can handle the flv-format.It will convert flv to mov. Hope it helps

Now all I need do is figure out how to turn on the sound when using Windows. Everything is as it should be on my Xp setup but no sound. Mac must be controlling this but I do not know where to look to solve this situation.

How can I preview video files in quicktime by click on the space bar like i use to with leopard?
I like to pull up all of my video files and arrowing down and hitting the space bar and previewing them.
I cannot do that with all of my video files just some of the video files are able to be previewed.
Some of the files show a thumb of the video and some just show the quicktime logo are other logos

RMAN duplicate target using set until telling me it can not find data files
I have RMAN scripts that I use freqently to clone a database from DB (production) to another (non-prod). These work just fine. I use the set until so that I can tell it at what point I want the new DB to be created from the backups of the source.
I had a request to go back a few weeks and the backup files (I do compressed backups to disk) were on tape. I had my backup person restore my backup directory for the source DB as it looked on a certain day (May 28). I have an 8 day retention policy and so the backup files that were restored showed files all the way back to 5/20 ( includes the point I want to use in my set until clause).
However, whenever I try to execute the rman clone, it tells me for each datafile:
RMAN-06023: no backup or copy of datafile 1 found to restore
Like I said, I am able to do this for a current backup that is on disk. I moved the backup files to the source db server and it works fine. However, from these files restored from tape it errors.

I got into RMAN and did a List backup command. In looking at the output, I see that it does have the 5/20 backup showing. Here is part of the output:

What I am not sure is if the SCN I used in my set until sequence command was from 5/20, when I look at the backup pieces that it is reading to restore from, they appear to be from backup files taken from June.
(e.g channel d1: reading from backup piece F:\BACKUPS\CSPROD\D3\CSPROD_DATA_6148 -- this is a 6/16 backup file).
Also, as you can see it was not able to do a media recovery.
