Can I copy existing TM Back Ups to new Time Capsule?

Hey All..
I am thinking about buying a 500GB Time Capsule but first wanted to know if it was possible to transfer all the existing back ups that have been done to my Western Digital 500GB Hard Drive. I have had the WD drive connected to my iMac for 3 months and don't really want to just wipe it when I connect the new Time Capsule.
Would love to hear of anyone with experience or knowledge on this subject.
Thanks..RICKY

It may be problematical. When you use TM with a local drive, my recollection is that it stores your data in a folder system similar to the one on your drive. Time capsule instead stores all the backup in one file called a sparsebundle.
I don't know if there is any way to create a sparesebundle from your existing backup.

  • Can I copy my iTunes files and folders to Time Capsule wirelessly from my PC?

Can I copy my iTunes files and folders to Time Capsule wirelessly from my PC? I was wondering since my iTunes files and folders are connected to iTunes.

You can but the TC is the worst possible location. The design is slow to start and quick to stop data connections.. that will cause trouble.
    Moving folders has specific instructions.

Move it to an external hard disk fine.. but be very sure you will not be happy with the TC as a location.

Can I access the data backed up on my time capsule remotely via the Internet? Let us say I have all my music or photos on my time capsule at home and I want to access it while I am outside over the Internet can I do this?

    See remote access methods here.

I am not sure what format these files are in.. but if they are itunes or iphoto.. have a care.. it is easy to corrupt them.

  • How can i connect my existing airport express to my new time capsule network?

I have an older airport express for wirelessly extending my network in my apartment. I bought a new Time Capsule and my airport express flashes amber and cannot find the time capsule to connect. How do I get them connected?

You can use the USB3 connections for USB2.  That's downward compatible.  Just runs at USB2 speed.
Just this week apple announced a couple of TB adapters, TB-to-ethernet and TB-to-firewire.  But the FW adapter is not at the apple store as yet (at least at the time I am posting this).

  • How can I extend the WiFi reach of my new Time Capsule 3TB in the best way?

    Hi there,
I have installed the new Time Capsule 3TB version and I would like to know how I can extend the reach in my house in the best way.
Does it make sense to add an Airport Extreme via Wifi as well?
    Thanks,
    Rick

If you need more wireless signal coverage, the "best" way to do this is add another AirPort in the central area that needs more coverage and then, connect the AirPort back to the Time Capsule using a wired Ethernet connection.
This type of setup maintains full bandwidth on the network. The result is much better performance in the "remote" area where you need more signal coverage.
Is is possible to have the AirPort "extend" the signal from the Time Capsule wirelessly....but you might want to understand the upsides and downsides to doing it this way.
Upside.....you will have more wireless signal coverage.
Downside.....the AirPort can only "extend" the quality of signal that it receives via wireless. The signal will have already slowed considerably by the time that it reaches the AirPort....so the "extended" area gets a significantly slower signal than the main area.
If you decide to try the second approach via wireless extension....try for line-of-sight between the Time Capsule and AirPort to help minimize the signal loss that will occur.

  • Can't copy files to airdisk; airdisk usage causes time capsule to restart

    i have the following; leopard 10.5.3, airport utility 7.3.1, western digital 1tb fat32 formatted mybook essential; airport express (joined to network on time capsule); 500gb time capsule, macbook pro;
my problems are as follows. keep in mind that i have toyed w/ all setting on time capsule and seem to get varying degrees of failure.
1- preparing for backup can take up to 30 mins. i am backing up manually, not every hour. not sure if this is really a problem or not, but i don't mind it as i just want to kick off a backup before bed.
2- this is the real problem. for the airdisk. i have files/folder w/ read write access (for me, everyone and staff). i can occasionally get a file to copy over, but most of the time it looks like the file is copying, and then it fails w/ insufficient privileges for some of the items). then i'm left w/ some files that are zero size, and i can't delete b/c i don't have sufficient privileges for those files. sometimes a restart of the laptop causes these files to disappear.
3- sometimes accessing the airdisk causes the server to either disconnect, or the airdisk to fail to mount. again, this is hit or miss.
i didn't have these problems copying stuff before 10.5.3.
i have toyed w/ permissions on my home folder, giving everyone read write access. i hope this won't mess anything up.
please help. i want to love my new mac, but not being able to copy a simple mp3 to airdisk is killing me. i have toyed w/ all options on airdisk, and none seem to help.
    thanks for your time.

    Yes, it's formatted as HFS+.
Just to make sure, I've unplugged it from the Time Capsule & plugged it into the USB port of my Mac again & it works fine like this. But now I've plugged it back into the Time Capsule it's now working fine. Strange.
    Thanks for the suggestion

  • Can't copy with LaCie Network Attached Storage and Time Capsule/Airport

    Hi,
I bought a Time Capsule to replace my recently faulty modem/router Linksys AG241 and in preparation of buying my first mac in the next few months.
Right now the network is as follows:
    — 1 Linksys AM200 modem connected to the TC by ethernet and set to bridge mode
    — 2 windowsXP pcs attached by ethernet to the Time Capsule
    — 1 NAS (LaCie 2Big Network) attached by ethernet to the Time Capsule
Despite some initial problems configuring the modem in bridge mode, the present problem is the following:
Everytime I try to copy a file (it can be either an 4MB file or an 800MB one) I get this error window:
    — Cannot copy "Filename": the specified network name is no longer available
Even when copying a file from one Share of the disk to another! However, have no trouble copying 1KB file, for example.
I've been searching throughout the internet for some days now but couldn't find any answer.
This LaCie NAS External Disk is ethernet-only and can only be connected to a switch or a router. It worked before with my older modem/router. I changed the ethernet cable by another one and I get the same result.
The Time Capsule is cofigured to distribute IPs through DHCP. Right now, I even have enabled the DHCP reservations to assign a static IP to the NAS, and to the Pcs. STill the same result.
This happens on both pcs. Still haven't tried with a wireless device yet (I don't have one).
Can anyone help me solve this?

Ok. I've ran a test on a friend's network in order to clarify if the LaCie NAS was the hardware causing this issue.
Well, it isn't. The NAS worked fine on this other network setting - which uses a different router, modem and 2 different computers.
The test ocurred in Wireless G, though, not by Ethernet connection with the computers.
*So I guess the problem must be on my Time Capsule or Modem?*
    *Possibly a configuration issue.*
Does anyone has/had some problem connecting Ethernet External Disks on a Time Capsule/Airport that can share some Solution ?
    Please, Help!?

  • How can I be sure that the back up to my time capsule has backed everything up as when I enter time capsule and interogate the back ups i can't identify individual music or picture files?

How can I confirm that the back up to my time capsule has backed everything up as when I enter time capsule and interrogate the backs ups I can't identify individual photo or music files?

You cannot browse a Time Machine backup with the Finder. To restore individual music files or any other files normally available in the Finder, open your Music folder then "Enter Time Machine" using the Time Machine icon.
Restoring individual photographs is slightly more cumbersome. Apple recommends restoring the entire iPhoto Library, but if you want to locate an individual photograph you could use Time Machine to restore the old Libary. Restore it to an alternate location to avoid overwriting your existing one. Open iPhoto while holding an Option key, open the restored Library, find the photo you need and export it, close iPhoto, re-open it with your usual Library, and import the photo.
Time Machine depends upon a number of sound engineering principles for reliable operation, one of which is "faith"
Your files will remain intact until your Time Machine backup device becomes inoperative.

  • How do I set up my new Time Capsule just to back up not as a wireless?

Can anyone tell me how to use my new Time Capsule just for back up not as a wireless router?
I have an ATT Uverse for my wireless service and have not been able to get the two to work together.
I just want to plug my Time capsule in and connect it to my MacBook Pro with an ethernet an click backup.
So far my computer doesn't reconnect the Time Capsule.
    Thank you for your help

You will need to configure the Time Capsule (TC) to join the wireless network provided by the ATT Uverse router, as follows:
Either connect to the TC's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to one of the LAN port of the TC, and then, using the AirPort Utility, change this setting:
AirPort Utility > Select the TC > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless tab > Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
Wireless tab > Wireless Network Name: <select the ATT Uverse network>
This configuration will allow your Mac to connect by wireless to the ATT Uverse router and perform Time Machine backups wirelessly.
If you want to only do this backups by wire, then you will need to connect the TC directly to the ATT Uverse router by Ethernet, and then, reconfigure the TC as a bridge. You can then connect the Mac to the TC by Ethernet as well for backups.

  • My new Time Capsule 500gB flashes amber and I can't get in contact

I can't get in contact with my brand new Time Capsule!
A network is running, both wireless and ethernet. Both my Apple TV and the desctop PC (which i'm using now) can go on the internet, but I can't make any changes using Airport.
When startin Airport it finds the Time Capsule, and it seems like it also has been updated, but when I try to go "Next" or use "Manual" button I got an error after a few seconds with the code 10057. An error occured when it tried to get in contact with the wireless unit.
It still flashing amber, what can I do?
I hope some of you can give me an advice?
    Best regards

Connect it to your computer, open iTunes, select the iPad under Devices in iTunes' sidebar, click on the Restore button.

  • How do I know I have backed up on my time capsule?

Trying to back up on new time capsule. Not sure if it worked. Instructions seemd very vague.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
There are different ways to check that the backup was made correctly. One of them is to select the Time Machine icon on the menu bar and check the date of the last backup.
If you want more information, open System Preferences > Time Machine, that will allow you to check when the last backup was made and if it succeeded or failed. To know more information about Time Machine, read Pondini's page > http://pondini.org

    Yes you can.
Install "Microsoft Web Matrix" on your Machine.
Then go to the portal>web apps and select the one you want to copy. Then click on WebMatrix in bottom right. Your WebMatrix will pop up. Click "Edit a Local Copy".
Thats the easy solution for creating a local copy and redeploying it.
