Can I copy files from an external NTFS formatted drive to my Mac?

My PC laptop died and I have two external NTFS formatted hard drives. I also have a desktop Mac.
I searched and came across another post dated Sept 2005 in the Support Forum that asked this similar quesiton I post. Sorry if i appear to sound repetitive but I really need  confirmation to the answer for reason stated below.
The answer given then was as follows, "Max OSX can only read files on an NTFS formatted external hard drive -- it cannot write files to such a drive [OK, that is clear to me]. If you copy a file from an NTFS formatted hard drive to the internal hard drive of your Mac, there are absolutely no restrictions on what you can do to that copy of the file."
So, to me this means I can modify the JPEG file in my Mac using Photoshop, right? No reformatting of the NTFS drive is necessary? If so, please let me know ASAP as i have a deadline to return the brand new PC which I purchassed thinking that that was my solution.
I pose this question to this forum because the original post is 8 years old and wonder if OS compatibility issues remain the same.

If you want to modify the JPEGs you have on the NTFS external disk, you will have to copy the images to your Mac hard disk before editing them.
If you want to edit files on a NTFS external disk, you have to install a third-party application as Paragon NTFS

How can i copy files from one external hard drive to another using macbook pro with retina display?

That's odd - if you open Disk Utility (Applications->Utilities) and select the disk(s), how are they formatted? If you're only going to be used with your Mac, they should be formatted as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".

  • How can I copy files from one external hard drive to another, without erasing anything?

    Hi,
I have video and photo files on one hard drive. I'd like to keep that one intact but also copy all the files to a second external hard drive. When I try to do so, I can't figure out how to open both hard drives at once. (If I open one, it closes the other window.)
    Thanks for your help!

Open a finder window and open up one harddrive. Then go to file>new finder window. This way you can have two finders up and select a different harddrive in each one. Then just copy and paste the files.
    Hope it helps!

  • How can I copy files from an external hard drive without creating copies on the disk?

I recently purchased a MacBook Air as part of a requirement for schoolwork. I decided to use it to sync music to my iPod and iPhone, and it worked perfectly well, however, i keep most of my music files on an external hard drive. Recently, it started sending me messages about the hard drive being almost full. I checked on the about this Mac screen, and it said that up to 95 gigabytes on the disk drive had been taken up by music. This was not my intention, as i had previously assumed the music was kept on my external hard drive as it had been on windows. I attempted to delete the folder, but it now said that my disk drive was taken up by "other" files. I want to still use my iTunes without these files copying. How?

    Hi flyingroastchicken,
If the songs are being stored on your Mac, then make sure that the location of where the iTunes media is being store. Take a look at the article below to verify that you have it set up the way you want.

  • How can I transfer files from an old PC hard drive to my Mac?

I have an old PC from which I removed the hard drive.  It is an old WD 40 circa 2001.  I would like to transfer all my old documents and pictures to my IMAC.  I obtained a USB Universal drive adapter from OWC, but I can't get my IMAC to recognize the drive.  Can anyone help me.

It just doesn't recognize the drive.  Will the first solution you provided work?  The drive has been physically removed from the PC.
It should work with your Mac.  If you have access to a PC, plug it in and see if it can be read, and if so just copy the files to a flash drive to transfer to your Mac (Better than spending your day trying to get your Mac to read it for a 1 time transfer of files)
The problem could very well be that the adaptor you got from OWC is defective.

I have an external Serial ATA drive with a windows operating system connected to my macbook pro by a usb adapter. I'm trying to delete some files from the drive but it tells me it is read only. How do I change the sharing and permissions?

You can't write/make changes to an NTFS formatted drive using a Mac without third party software.

  • Why Can't I Copy Files from an External Hard Drive or SD Card?

Major problem here... Why when I try copying files from an external hard drive or an SD card onto my internal iMac hard drive, it doesn't work?  The status bar that pops up, shows that it completes the transfer of the files to 100%; however, when it does in fact finish, the files actually do not appear on my hard drive.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.  This is one of many problems I have been finding with OS X Lion and am very much on the verge of going back to Snow Leopard.
    Thank you.

Have u tried the usual? Safe boot. Delete finder plist files? etc. And the drives are formatted for mac yes?

  • HT2518 i would like to copy files from an external hard drive to my Mac. I intend to do this several times. Does Mac identify this files which have already be copied over or does it re- copy them every time?

i would like to copy files from an external hard drive to my Mac. I intend to do this several times. Will Mac copy the same files every time or can it segregate and only copy new files from the external hard drive?

Only copies the file or files you select. The selection will remain unless you change it in case you wish to repeat the same copy to another location. Multiple and different copy operations can be run simultaneously.

  • Can't copy file from SAP-directory to FTP server

    Hello,
I can't copy files from the SAP server to the FTP server. The file is created with OPEN DATASET and CLOSE DATASET commands and is placed in the SAP-directory S:\usr\sap\DEV\DVEBMBGS00\work.
I can see and read the file with transaction al11, so I know it's there.
But the FTP command always gives the same error:
    S:\usr\sap\DEV\DVEBMBGS00\work\[FILENAME] errno 22: invalid argument
I can connect to the FTP, but the put command keeps failing. Somehow, the file in the SAP directory can't be read, it seems, even when
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

Ok, I found out that I have to use SAPFTPA as RFC destination type, instead of SAPFTP, otherwise the folders can't be located.
But with SAPFTPA I can't seem to connect to the FTP server. I've tested the connection with sm59 and it works, but for the FTP it doesn't work. When I use SAPFTP as destination type, it still works.
    What can I do?
    Thanks.

  • Can't copy files from mounted DMG. What's up??

So all of a sudden, I can't copy files from mounted DMG files. It's strange because if there is one file and I drag it to another location, like desktop, it won't copy. If I drag 2 files from the mounted DMG to the desktop one of them copies. If I drag 3, then 2 copy... it's always all but one of the files... never all of them.
I've tried repairing permissions but nothing works. I'm at a loss...
    thanks

Try holding option when you drag the files. This tells the mac to move the files to the desktop of your computer not the desktop folder of the DMG (usually a hidden folder)
If that doesn't work it may be that you need administrative privileges to move the files. Make sure you are logged on as as an administrator by selecting the account tab in system preferences and making sure it says "admin" under your user name. Log on to or create an administration account then try moving the file.
Hope this helps, let me know

  • How can I transfer files from one external HD (WD My Passport) to another external HD (Seagate Backup Plus)?  WD drive was improperly ejected and Finder no longer recognizes it.  Tried fixing with Disk Utility but failed.

How can I transfer files from one external HD (WD My Passport 2T) to another external HD (Seagate Backup Plus 2T)?  WD drive was improperly ejected (although we did tell it to eject) and now Finder no longer recognizes it.   Using MacBook Pro and I just upgraded to Yosemite before this happened. Was told at Apple Store to use Disk Utility to repartition, but it failed.  It says to backup files and restore.  But how do I backup files?  Or would appreciate any other suggestions to repair drive.

You may drag & drop between external hds.
    Should you run into trouble.
Take the exernal drive appart.  Take out the harddrive.  Try reading the data via a usb adapter. Put a household finan on the hd.

  • Can't copy files from NTFS volume with Read Only permissions?

I am trying to copy files from an NTFS volume used previously for Windows onto another volume which is Mac OS X Extended...
However, certain files fail to copy due to the fact that I 'don't have permission to access some of the items'...
So I found the items which are causing the issue and viewed the permissions for them which display as 'You can only read'... I presume I am correct taking these as read-only permissions which (to my knowledge) should allow the files/folders to be copied accross to a new volume assuming that the existing volume is left without any changes attempted.
So can anyone suggest to me why this is? And how I might rectify the issue?
    Thanks in advance

Ok I've just worked out that 'You can only read' is referring to the fact that I can only view permissions but not add any. Below this statement, no permissions are listed which may explain why I cannot access the files but does not explain why I can copy/access some files, also with no permissions...

  • Copying files from an external HD extremely slow!

    Hi everybody.
    Thank’s to read this message.
    I’ve a MacBook Pro 13” (mid 2009) core2duo 2.26 Mhz whit 2GB ram and running Snow Leopard 10.6.2
The system runs perfect until i try to copy something from an external drive, takes a lot of time to copy it, for example a 600 mb file takes almost 15 minutes, thats ridiculous, the problem is only when the info comes from an external drive and not from the machine to an external drive.
I’ve tried whit tree different external HD and cables, whit four different USB flash memories, happened the same whit the SD slot and whit the CD drive, the size of the files or the content doesn’t matter is slow whit anything, I thought in the external drives format (FAT32 most of them) but happened the same whit the Time Machine disk whit HFS+ format, yesterday i copy a 4.5 GB folder whit videos and photos from time machine HD and took 4, yes 4 hours!!
Is a serious problem because while is copying a file uses all the machine resources and i can’t do anything else until finish writing the file. Also i think is not an Snow Leopard problem, cause i tried to install Windows XP whit Bootcamp and in the part when the system copy files from the CD to the HDD happened the same, just took extremely lot of time and i had cancel it.
I already reset the PRAM, repaired the hard disc and made a test whit the Hardware test tool in the Snow Leopard disc but can’t find something wrong.
Well, thats the problem, any idea or comment is appreciate, thanks a lot

Hi Eww, thanks a lot for your answer
Thats a good idea, but why happens the same when i'm out of Snow Leopard, i mean installing windows xp goes very slow.
I think should be something that controls the in and out information flow, but i don't know.
    Any other idea??

  • Can't Copy Files to Remote External Hard Drive

I have two Macs, a Macbook Pro, and an iMac, both running 10.5.5. Whenever I'm logged into one and connected to the other via saved credentials from Keychain, I get the following error when trying to copy files from the local machine to the remote machine's external drive:
"You may have to enter the name and password for an administrator on this computer to change the item names "File Name".
I'm given the option to [STOP], or [CONTINUE], so I choose Continue, and I get this:
"The item "File Name" contains one or more items you do not have permission to read. Do yuo want to copy the items you are allowed to read?"
So I click continue again, and I get the following error:
"The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items."
Whenever I'm connected to a remote machine with credentials other than "Guest," I can't copy any files to the remote machine period, not even to the Public folder.
At first I thought this was a glitch related to MobileMe, but since I've totally done away with MobileMe, and whenever I'm logged in as Guest I can access and copy to any directory I have shared with permissions for everyone to read and write in the sharing pane of Sys Prefs.
I've searched the forums and can't find anything similar. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Taylor

Does anyone here knows how to copy file from shared music. I can view others shared music but can't do anything about it. When I tried to Right Click on music I want to copy. There are only 3 options (Get info, Unchecked Selection & Copy). I chose copy, but don't know what to do next. I wanted to place it in my Library but don't have an option to do it.
    Please help.

I've never copied music, but have you tried just dragging the file to your library? Not 100% sure if it works, never tried it myself. Also, if you right click in your library, can you paste?
