Can I copy macbook library to imac?

My itunes account is on my Macbook pro where i sync my iphone, etc.
I can share this library to my imac but this doesn't allow me to use that music within iweb, idvd, etc.
I copied the tunes and the associated files to the imac but a message saying i was not authorised to play this music prevented me from using it. Am i trying the impossible (or immoral?) and is there a solution.

Songs purchased on the iTunes Store can be copied to an unlimited number of computers. However, only five computers at a time can play your iTunes DRM-protected music.

  • Can I copy iPhoto Library from G4 to G5 back to G4 back to G5, etc.?

Can a single iPhoto Library (~27gb) be copied back & forth between my PowerBook G4 & my iMac G5 (to & from the separate hard drive to which I copy the Library for backup) on a continuing basis?
My hope is that anytime my wife or I might do some editing, albums, books, adding photos, etc., on either of the computers, to that 'one & only' Library, we would then also copy it to the other computer – so at any given time both computers could have the same Library (obviously we would be careful to not both make changes on both computers at the same time, thus inadvertently stumbling into two versions of the Library).
I envision this, for now, as an alternative to possibly venturing into the creation of additional, different Libraries.
Will this work? Are there risks involved?

As Brooks said, you should be able to. I would be careful to reset the permissions on the folder and it's contents after each move so as to make sure you have the proper access for viewing and editing. You can do it manually as follows:
Setting Permissions for iPhoto Library Folder
1 - Select the iPhoto Library folder and type Command-I.
2 - When the Info window comes up go to the Ownership and Permissions section and make sure You have Read & Write permission and that the Owner and Group have Read & Write also. Others - Read Only.
3 - Then click on the "Apply to enclosed items..." button.

  • Can't copy Aperature Library to external.  Get this error "The operation can't be completed because an item is being modified."

I have been trying to find a solution to this problem by browsing this forum but I can't seem to find a solution.
As many others have decided to do I want to copy my Aperature library to an external FW 800 drive as my laptop space is dwindling.  It seems all you need to do is copy the Library from the finder which can also be revealed in the preference if Aperature.  When copying it seems to transfer for a few seconds but then I get this error "The operation can’t be completed because an item is being modified."  I have formatted the drive correctly and there is no issues with Aperature itself so why do you think I am having this error?  What can I do to copy this Library to my external?

Reboot your machine make sure Aperture doesn't start (as Lion is liable to do) and try it.

  • Can't copy Iphoto library from external drive to hard drive

I have a 210 gig iphoto library that I am trying to copy from an external hard drive with 440 gig of avaliable space. I am getting a message say it can't copy because there is not enough space. The math doesn't add up

    Try the following:
1 - run Disk Utility and repair disk permissions.
2 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
3 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database, followed by Option #1.
4 - try dragging the library to your internal drive again.

  • Can't copy from library to ipod

When synching I got box with message & list of songs (all) in library that couldn't be copied beause they couldn't be found. Can anyone help?
    Thanks!

Thanks Patrick, I appreciate the response. This forum has been really helpful in my trying to get this ipod going. Turns out the person who copied my library to my new computer didn't bring over the actual songs, just the list. Not having experience with iPod problems, I've been getting a good education. I printed out the list, then wiped the library. Dragged out all the cd's to reload. Except for the ones I purchased from itunes store, which I don't know if I can reload yet, I'll get it done. Thanks again for your help, as that's how I found out I had no songs!

  • Can I copy iDVD from my iMac to a Macbook?

My son deleted iDVD on his laptop, I have the application on my iMac, is there some way to copy from my computer to his computer?

The problem is iDVD 'parts' (like the themes) are located in several locations on your hard drive. If the missing iDVD version is exactly the same as the version on your computer - you MIGHT be able to make it work but simply copying the application.
What happened to the install discs that should have come with your son's computer?

  • Can't copy Aperture library back to internal drive

I've been working at getting a single unified library because I've moved to a laptop with a smaller SSD. I had slightly different libraries in iPhoto and Aperture so to merge them into a single library, I had to do it on an external drive. I now have a good Aperture library file on my external drive. It is 64.78 GB. My MacBook Air's internal SSD has 136.2 GB of free space. However, every time I try to drag my Aperture library back onto my laptop hard drive, I get the message "The item “Aperture Library” can’t be copied because there isn’t enough free space."
Can anyone help me figure out what is going on?
    Thanks in advance.

    Aperture 3.4.3

You are welcome, Christine. I have disabled local snapshots as well.
I added a script to my start-up items, that wil be executed when I log on again after rebooting the Mac. So I cannot forget to disable them again after rebooting.
If you want to do the same, open Script Editor and add this lines to an new apple Script:
    -- turn local snapshots off
    tell application "Terminal"
      activate
do script "sudo tmutil disablelocal" in 0 -- no local Timemachine backups
    end tell
Then save the script and export it as an application. Now open the Users&Groups panel in the system Preferences and add your Apple Script to your Startup items.

  • IPhoto: can't copy my library to another drive

I'm trying to back up (and ultimately move) my 94GB iPhoto library to an external harddrive and just before it finishes copying I get a message that says, "The Finder can't complete the operation because some date in "iPhoto Library" can't be read or written. (Error code - 36).  Is there a way for me to find what data might be corrupt so I can move my Library?  My Library is currently on an external drive Passport drive.

Sorry, I don't think I was clear;  the source drive is Windows FAT32 and has the iPhoto library, the destination drive is a Lacie formatted with Mac OS Extended and is empty.
I haven't been successful after four attempts to copy by dragging library to destination drive.

  • Computer Hard Drive Failure - How can I copy itunes library to new pc/ipod?

    Hi
My old desktop pc hard drive recently crashed due to a critical error so I have invested in a new pc and am considering purchasing a more up to date ipod to replace my old ipod mini. Is there are way I can access, retrieve or transfer my existing itunes library of imported cd / downloaded (purchased) music from my old pc (e.g. from the ipod mini itself or by loading my original software disc on the new pc?) to my new pc / ipod or do I have to start again from scratch and lose purchased tunes etc? If so, Apple may lose a customer, which would be a shame.
    Many thanks for your help.
    Mike

1). Connect your iPod to your new computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
3). Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. There are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content only from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
4). Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
5). I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • Can't copy iPhoto Library file

I am trying to copy my iPhoto library from one mac to another. I have them connected with an Ethernet cable. The library is about 90 GB. When I drag the library file over it appears to copy about 1/5 of the file (judging by the blue line) and then it stops and says something like, "the iPhoto Library file already exists."
Anyone have any ideas? I certainly checked the target drive/folder and don't see any previously existing library file sitting there.
    Thanks in advance!

There must be something more to this problem. I don't think that it is iPhoto library specific b/c I have the same sorts of error when copying other folders of data between the two computers. Strangely enough, when I initiate the copy command from the other computer (the one that has the files I want to copy), it works without a hitch. I guess I'll just do it that way.
    Thanks.

  • Can I copy my itunes library from my mac onto an external drive and then use that drive with a Vista PC?

  • IPods crash and can't back up library - HELP

I have had an iPod mini for 1.5 years. My spouse got an iPod (30GB video) recently. When we switch between them to update songs from one library, the iPods crash and have to be reset (even that takes a few tries following instructions on iPod help).
I tried circumventing the problem by copying the library on my laptop from our PC (to have one iPod with one computer, both have XP Pro) with the USB drive but the library won't copy from USB drive to the new iTunes. (it will play songs from USB but won't copy them).
    1. Can I backup the library on another computer?
    2. What is the safest way to create a backup library (CDs in my experience may not last long)?
    3. If we update the computer (hopefully soon) will that mean that we can't copy the library to a new commputer and will lose all the songs we bought?
    4. How can we prevent either iPod from blocking or crashing?
Thanks for any advice and help.

Update: Success! I used my iPod as an external hard drive following these instructions:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1329?viewlocale=en_US
After I reformatted I reinstalled my old iTunes 6 and dragged the folder back to My Music. At first, iTunes wuldn't sync a couple hundred songs to my iPod because I wasn't "authorized" so I had to enter my Apple ID and password. Downloaded latest software for Itunes and iPod and all is good.
Investing in an external hard drive still sounds like a good idea, since this was my first reformat and it was a bit nerve-wracking.

  • Copy iTunes Library but missing ITL file

I am trying to copy my iTunes library to a new computer. The problem I am having is that there is no itl or xml files in my itunes library on th eold computer (yes iTunes still works on the old computer). I have updated both versions to the latest ver of iTunes. I thought this would be an easy process of just copying the iTunes folder and then Choosing the library that I copied over. Since the old computer is still working, is there a way I can recreate the itl file or any other suggestions? I could just copy all my music over again into the new computer but I spent hours selecting indiv songs to sync to my ipod therefore don't want to loose that info. Thanks.

Here is the typical layout of the iTunes folders.
Your *00 iTunes* folder contains both *iTunes Music* suggesting that it coresponds to the main iTunes folder, but also contains Podcasts, Music etc. which would make it map to the *iTunes Music* folder.
The "parent" of any folder is simply the one that contains it... As I see it the highest level folder that encloses all the media is the root level of the drive, therefore you need to move the library files * album artwork folder there, then try opeing iTunes again. Assuming the library works on the old computer you can then copy the library files & album artwork folder to the new machine and test it there.
If that all works it should be possible to normalise your library so that managing it is less confusing in future.
    1. Create an new folder in the root of the drive called iTunes.
    2. Move gthe library files, album artwork folder and *00 iTunes* folder into the iTunes folder.
    3. Shift-start iTunes, open \iTunes\iTunes Library.itl & test
    4. If all goes well close iTunes, rename *00 iTunes* as *iTunes Media*, start iTunes & test.
    5. Confirm in preferences that the iTunes Media folder is now given as \iTunes\iTunes Media
    6. If all has gone well so far Consolidate the library to rearrange music in the proper layout.
    7. If you have ever let Windows Media Player get your hands on your music then the folders may be littered with various album art and desktop.ini files. When iTunes reshuffles it leaves these behind. I've written a script to tidy these up which you can get from http://www.samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/cleandeadart.asp if you're interested.
