Can I create an extended network with a brand new TC and 2 first gen. AE units?

I purchased a TC 2TB yesterday and replaced my non apple router with the TC. I have 2 older AE units that I suspect to be first generation. TC is in basement and I have placed AE in garage where I spend most of my time. Signal in garage is weak and lags. Air tunes off of AE in garage connected to boom box works fine. I run AirTunes from 3 iPhones, iPod touch, and 2 iPads with no problems. The options in manual setup for the AE don't offer make this an extended network, I suspect because they are too old? I don't want to create a WDS network and sacrifice the bandwidth. My main machine is an iMac 27 that is one year old, this is in the kitchen pretty much midway between the TC and the AE in the garage, if that makes any difference?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

The options in manual setup for the AE don't offer make this an extended network, I suspect because they are too old?
Please take a look at the faint print on the side of both AirPort Express (AX) devices that you have to identify the Model No.
You will need # A 1264 to do what you want. If you have # A 1084 or similar, the devices that you have are not compatible with the "extend a wireless network" setup.
What are your findings?

  • I'm trying to create an extended network with a ZyXEL

Recently bought a cheap ZyXEL for the back bedroom so that I can use it as a bridge/access point. I have the Time Machine set up as a WDS Main, but I can't find a place for pins, push button, etc.  How do I get it to connect to the Time Machine? Here's the ZyXEL's manual if it will help. And, since it can't find any other base stations, it is amber, although I can still get online, no problem. Anyway, any help would be appreciated.

They are pre-n, but still n. Thanks!
Not pre-N (which is a mimo G quasi standard) rather draft N.. and draft N and full conforming N work fine together. The full acceptance of N took a while but draft products like all the wireless cards in the earlier Laptops work just fine with later airport products as earlier ones.
Ethernet over Power (EOP) adpaters are a good alternative to wireless. Any double hopping wireless causes terrible slowness (less than half the speed) and increased latency. The EOP are pretty much consumer items now and work easily in most houses.. although they usually need to be plugged directly to the power point. They cannot work on a power board due to the 10A breaker.. or whatever it has in your Country. A simple double adapter should work.

  • Creating an extended network with another base station

I bought the new 802.11n because I wanted to extend my network into another area where it is getting a weaker signal. I set up the new one as the main one, and selected "extend the network" - then I had my old one (only a few months old) "join the network".
Is it boosting the signal in a new area? The computer there still shows just as weak of a signal as before. The remote base station is about center between the new base station and the computer.

Nevermind.. I changed it to "extend the network" and it works much better.

  • Can I create a large network with 2 WRT900N routers & 2 live ethernet ports 80 ft apart.

I have a main cable modem in the cellar and from there it splits with one LAN line going to one end of the house and the other LAN going to the other. I have two wireless routers (WRT900N). Yes, I know I can connect one WRT900N to another WRT900N through their LAN ports. That being said, can't I do this some other way? It would make sense that with two live LAN CAT-5 plug-ins, two top end routers, that I should be able to do it. That being said, the only feedback I am getting is to go and return one of the routers and buy a couple of access points (although the reviews on the WRT900N repeaters are not so flattering) but this does not make any sense to me. thanks for anyone's help!

Are you sure that it is WRT900N ??
    I think it is WRT600N !!

  • How can I create a RAWpic-file with header(cluster of 8elements) and 2D Array?

    I have created a cluster with 8 "I32"elements (Header). I also got picture information into a 2D array (i converted information from a ROI into a 2Darray("Image pixels(I16)")
Now I want to create a RAW picture file (first the header information followed by the picture information.)
I think I have to convert the Header-cluster into an array with "cluster to array". But even this is not possible(Info:"you cannot combine 2 different clusters"). Then I have to combine the 2 arrays with "insert into array"??? But the header array would be a 1Darray if the "cluster to array conversation" works and the picture information is 2D.
    Can anyone help me please?

I think this is actually pretty straightforward, barring any byte-order issues. Attached is an image that demonstrates what I think jotthape wants to do.
The key is to let multiple Write File nodes do the work for you. There's no need to combine all the data into a single structure for the write, and avoiding that makes things easier in this case, because you don't have to worry about some of the data being I32 and the rest being I16.
    Give this a shot,
    John
P.S. It does seem likely that you will run into byte-order problems if you want to read your custom RAW file in using some other piece of Windows software. You can check the forum and the NI site for info on byte order, then ask a new question if you're still having a problem.

  • TS1702 Why can't I download any apps with my brand new Iphone?

I am new to the Iphone and for the life of me I am not able to download ANY apps to my phone.  I have tried what I think is everything, but I'm sure I am missing something.  I have have changed my setting to try and download off the cellular network, I have tried to download from my home network, I have tried at different locations, and nothing seems to be working.  I have not been able to download anything.

Make sure your wifi is good on another device, go into the App Store app, tap Search to find a specific app, typethe name of the app after touching the text feild at the top, press Search, tap an app, press the button that says FREE or $.99, etc. then press it again to INSTALL. Now you wait for the download to end.
Unfortunately this process maychange this fall when the big App Store renovation hits, of course you have to choose to upgrade (for free). STAY LOYAL ...lol, I creep myslef out sometimes.

  • Extended network with 2 AEBS and 2 AE

I have an extended network with 2 AE Base Stations and 2 Airport Expresses. They are all connected on the 5 GHz band and are 'N' only. The two AEBS are connected through ethernet and the two AE are extended wirelessly. I also have an apple TV, Macbook Pro and iMac that connect to this network wirelessly on a regular basis.
My question is this.... is it possible to assign which AE connects to which AEBS. The two AEBS are at opposite ends of my home on furthest levels apart. I have one in the basement on one end, and one on the second floor on the other. The two AE are in the middle on the first floor in between the bases.
The problem I seem to be having is that they (the two AE) are not connecting to the base station that gives them a good signal. They connect fine, but the BS they are connecting to give them a weak signal essentially making them ineffective in their extension. I want to be able to assign them to the closest BS to make them more effective.
    Is this possible?

    Sure,
They are actually independent of the apple gear in that they are simply attached as wireless access points to provide for the wireless g side of my network. Their IP's are static and they provide my windows machines and gaming consoles their wireless feed.
The two Airport Extremes and Airport Express's make up the foundation of my 5 GHz wireless N network for my Apple systems. The two airport express's not only extend my network but also work as airtunes devices in my house.
So....the AExpress do not extend the linksys units at all... just the 5 GHz N. The problem I am having is that one of the AExpress units is linking to the AExtreme that is farther away from it....giving it a very poor connection and hence extending a very poor signal. I would like to get it to attach to the closer unit....and would prefer to do it without having to utilize MAC filtering if that is possible.
I have other MBP's and MB's that connect periodically and using MAC filtering would be a pain.

  • Can I create a home network withous dsl connection with airport express

can I create a home network without dsl connection with airport express?
So it means I can't connect to my HP Airprint/Wireless printer without exretnal connection through ISP?? Just need to print from my Mac and iphone. I have Vodafone Prepaid connection, which is directly connected to my Mac. Does that make an internal network possible?

You have to set up the Air Port with an internet connection to set up a network. Do you have a modem? If yes you can set up the network.

  • Can either the Airport Express or Airport Extreme be used "standalone" to create a wireless network with access to the internet?

I want to create a wireless network for my iMac, Macbook Pro and iPad, and I'm confused about the Airport Extreme and Airport Express devices.
There is mention for both about connecting them to a DSL or Modem. Does this mean I have to obtain additional hardware before they will enable connection to the internet? (In the past, I've used a Belkin Router, which simply connected to the phone line.)
    Any advice gratefully received.
    Tony

Does this mean I have to obtain additional hardware before they will enable connection to the internet?
Yes, you need a modem. The AirPorts are routers only. They do not have a modem built in, so you will need a modem if you want to be able to connect to the Internet.
The Belkin device that you have used before is a modem/router.  It combines the functions of a modem and router in one package.

  • Extending Network with Airport Expresses?

I'm drawing in wifi signal from the shipyard and want to broadcast(extend) it throughout the lower sections of a boat.
Currently I have 1 airport express drawing in the signal with ethernet connecting to the computer. However I want to extend the current network. Can I do this by buying another Airport Express and connecting through ethernet cable to the one I currently have. Would this work? What options would I need to select with the new AE(extend network, create network, etc)? Would this work with an airport extremeas well.
    Any help much appreciated.
    Ash

    Tessarax,
Are you saying I would need three AXn to create the extended network? or would it just work with 2?
    ie
    AXn(Recieving)-----Ethernetcable-----AXn extending network
    Will this not work?
Sorry just want to know how much I'm in for and if it will work before i go out and spend it.
    Thanks for the reply

  • I have a mid-2010 iMac and just purchased a 2TB TC, can't join existing wireless network with AC standard so attached to iMac via ethernet with TC wifi turned off.  How do i access TC now? not showing up in disk utility or on desktop. working fine with TM

I have a mid-2010 iMac and just purchased a 2TB TC, I just found out that it can't join existing wireless network with new AC standard so attached to iMac via ethernet with TC's wifi turned off.  How do i access TC now? not showing up in disk utility or on desktop. It is working fine with TM.  My cheeper seagate drives etc kept crashing, so i didnt trust cheeper back up options anymore.  Connected those drives to TM via firewire and could see the drives and access them.
Also, I didn't want to bridge TC with my new fios router that I paid 100 dollars for, to get N speed and also paying 10 dollars more a month for fast speed.  I heard that bridging slows down everything and then there can be port issues with mail etc.  I connect to the internet via airport only and it is pretty fast. Getting over 50mbs downloads and over 30mbs uploads.  Plus everything in my home it connected to my fios router, airport express for music streaming, two apple tvs, vuezone camer system.  I really didn't want to monkey around too much with my system.  But are there other options to connect the new TC.  Can't find info anywhere for this and called apple who gave me the info above.  after hanging up, i see that i cant access my TC and I am wondering if i would have to reset it to turn wifi on again to make changes to the drive, turn off blinking light  or repair it in disk utility if it should become corrupted.
For other with similar issues i did solve some other problems: when i connected it to my ethernet port on my iMac wifi stopped working.  Found that I had to turn off the ethernet in the system>network screen, but then TM didn't see the TC so i restarted after changes and then it saw it.
Now a rant.  I can't believe in this wireless age that Apple would make a product that cant join a wireless net work.  The apple rep said i could return it and look for the previous TC that would join an existing wireless network.  Are we going backwards?
    Thanks!
    lennydas

Ok... it is getting a bit clearer but there are still some questions.
I connect to the internet via airport only and it is pretty fast.
I was assuming airport in this statement in your first post meant the TC or the Express.. but I now realise we are still in the mass confusion stage where apple calls everything wireless an airport. So what you mean is the airport internal card of the computer??
Also, I didn't want to bridge TC with my new fios router that I paid 100 dollars for, to get N speed and also paying 10 dollars more a month for fast speed.  I heard that bridging slows down everything and then there can be port issues with mail etc.
    I think this is mistaken.
Putting the TC in bridge mode plugged into your FIOS will not slow the network.. nor will it cause mail or port issues.. in bridge the TC is just a fancy WAP and switch plus the network hard drive.
If the computer is close it will be faster than the FIOS.
You can run both wireless networks with different names.. so it is clear which is which. But you can also setup roaming so the computers themselves pick which is the best wireless.
I tried extending the wireless net work and tried joining wireless network, but the TC kept crashing and I had to keep resetting the TC.  the Apple support person said these, extend wireless network and joint wireless network, are no longer a connection option with the new TC because of the new AC protocol.
    Thanks again!
You cannot extend to a non-apple wireless router.
You cannot use join a wireless network because when you do the ethernet ports will be cut off.
But that has not changed.. I don't think Apple support is correct.. there has been no change with the AC model.. it is simply a fact that apple routers do not work in join wireless mode other than as a dumb client. The same applies to AC as to the earlier version.. but I have asked another person to check this.
Join in the express is the only apple router that still allows an ethernet connection.
For now you best use of the TC is bridged to the FIOS. Wireless you can sort out between several options.

  • Can't create a wireless network without a wireless card on my Mac

    Help!
O.k. I tried searching the forums for an answer but the odd nature of my problem, and the immense database of topics made it very difficult to find a similar post.
    The general issue/idea:
Run a wireless network using Airport Extreme - Connect desktop mac via ethernet and Roku player via wi-fi. Can't get the desktop mac to connect via ethernet when I restart the network/Airport Extreme.
My Father in law has my old computer; It's a PowerMac G5 (Dual 1.8GHz CPUs) running OS 10.5.8), connected to internet via cable (TimeWarner) modem. It does NOT have an Airport or Airport Extreme card installed. The computer works fine, and I don't believe that I 'need' an Airport Card in order to use the Airport Extreme (it's a brand new/refurbished model) in the manner described below.
I would like to use the Airport Extreme to generate/run a wireless network (Do I need an Airport Card in order to generate/run a wireless network? Doesn't the AE actually do that?), connect the desktop Mac to the network via Ethernet (I shouldn't need an Airport Card to do that, should I?) and connect a 'Roku Player (802.11g capable) to the network via wi-fi.
As far as I know, this should be possible.
    Basic steps/as I understand them:
    A. Connect ethernet from cable modem to AE.
    B. Connect ethernet from AE to desktop Mac.
    C. Create the wireless network using desktop Mac and Airport Utility.
    D. Restart AE to start the wireless network running.
    E. Connect Roku to wireless network over wi-fi.
I have no problems with A & B. Once the AE is connected to the desktop Mac, I'm able to get internet via ethernet as it passes through the AE. I can then create a wireless network (step C.) using the Airport Utility (and setup assistant). The problem starts after I've configured the wireless network.
Once I've configured the wireless network, the Airport Utility software prompts me to restart the AE in order to start the wireless network.
As soon as I restart the AE, my desktop Mac tries to connect to the 'wireless' network, even though it's already connected via ethernet. I don't have a wireless card in the Mac, and I don't want to connect the desktop using wi-fi/wireless. It's connected via ethernet, works fine during configuration, and I don't ever anticipate a desire to connect the desktop via wi-fi.
No matter what I do, I can't get the desktop to connect via ethernet. The only network connection option I'm offered is 'Rescan'. O.k. the desktop can't find the wireless network (because it doesn't have a wireless card), and I'm unable to continue with the Airport Utility. I can't make any further changes to the network (the options to manually change the network configuration are not available as the desktop Mac cannot currently talk to the AE - It's still trying to connect wirelessly), and the desktop has no internet connection as it's trying to connect wirelessly.
    *How can I...*
*Setup/run a wireless network, while keeping the desktop Mac connected via ethernet?*
I'm perfectly willing to factory reset the AE and start over.
    Any help appreciated.
    Thwarted by the network.

My Father in law has my old computer; It's a PowerMac G5 (Dual 1.8GHz CPUs) running OS 10.5.8), connected to internet via cable (TimeWarner) modem. The computer works fine, and I don't believe that I 'need' an Airport Card in order to use the Airport Extreme (it's a brand new/refurbished model) in the manner described below.
That is correct, you could connect the PowerMac G5, via Ethernet, to the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) or any other wired router for Internet access. You do NOT need an AirPort Card for wired access ... ONLY if you want the G5 to connect to a wireless network.
I would like to use the Airport Extreme to generate/run a wireless network (Do I need an Airport Card in order to generate/run a wireless network? Doesn't the AE actually do that?)
That is correct, the AEBS is a wireless router that can provide a wireless network. The AirPort Card, on the other hand is a wireless adapter used to allow a Mac to connect to a wireless network, created by any wireless router ... not just those provided by Apple.
Yes, these are all good assumptions.
As soon as I restart the AE, my desktop Mac tries to connect to the 'wireless' network, even though it's already connected via ethernet. I don't have a wireless card in the Mac, and I don't want to connect the desktop using wi-fi/wireless.
Do you actually have an AirPort Card installed in the G5 now? If so, then it might be possible that the "firing order" for network connectivity has AirPort at the top of the list under System Preferences > Network. Just change the order to have Ethernet at the top and disable AirPort to ensure that the G5 connects by Ethernet only.

    Hello:
To give a sensible answer, a little more information is needed.
I am guessing that you want to set up a wireless network as you have both a desktop and laptop.

Can i create an apple account with an app store card, or do i Need an itunes card?

    You need an iTunes card.
You can setup an account without a credit card if that helps.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2534
I found this in the iTunes help menu.
Redeem an iTunes allowance, gift certificate, or Gift Card
If you received an iTunes Store allowance, gift certificate, iTunes Gift Card, or promotional code, you can use it to buy songs, videos, or audiobooks from the iTunes Store.
You need to set up an Apple ID for use with the iTunes Store before you can redeem anything in the iTunes Store. You don’t need to enter credit card information to redeem only the amount of a gift certificate or card.
Before redeeming anything, make sure you are signed into the iTunes Store (choose Store > Sign In, or select Sign In from the navigation bar at the top of the iTunes Store window):
I don't see any mention of App Store cards.
