Can I create recovery disks using my laptop HD as external drive?

My Thinkpad T420 hard drive crashed in a really bad way. I can't load windows (7) and windows repair says it can't help me. I removed my hard drive and put it in a usb enclosure and connected it to a different pc. I can see the recovery folder/drive and my data drive as two different drives in "my computer". What I'm trying to figure out is if there's a way I can create the Win7 recovery discs this way, through what is now an external hard drive. The backup PC I'm using is XP, but I can get another Win7 PC if that makes a difference.
TIA!

@Phil18...
I'll offer a few more thoughts.
The recovery partition you're seeing is meant to be accessed by software in the OS partition to enable creation of a Recovery DVD set, or, through a boot-interruption sequence to enable a direct-to-disk recovery of the OS partition. Since you mention that the drive has "crashed in a really bad way", I'm presuming that it doesn't boot any longer.
In this case, my recommendation to you is to contact Service and discuss obtaining a Factory Recovery Disk Set. There may or may not be a charge for this. Contact information is below. Once you have the set, along with a new drive, you'll easily be able to build up the new drive to the factory out-of-box state.

  • ProDesk 600 create recovery disks - use usb instead

We have just received some HP Prodesk 600 desktop pcs - K1t26AW#ABA - running Win 7 Pro 64 bit - and would like to make system recovery media.  The HP program installed has only the option to make recovery disks and requires dual layer DVD's to be used.   I have had  other HP products that allow recovery media to be created either on DVD or usb.  Is there any software fix or utility to allow us to create the ProDesk 600 recovery media on USB instead of dual layer DVD's?  We have no dual layer DVD's and have no other use for them so we don't want to order a pack and have most of it laying around unused.  Thanks

You can clone the partition to an external usb disk with a cloning utility program. It won't have any effect on the one time usb or DVD recovery media creation limitation.
If I may give a word of advice:
Create a recovery usb flash drive. It is reliable, fast and durable.

  • NB200-10Z: Can't make recovery disk using TOSHIBA Recovery Disc Creator

    Hi Folks,
I finally got round to buying a USB DVD drive in order to create recovery discs for my NB200-10Z. I got the following:
    * Samsung SE-S084C, External USB 2.0 Slimline 8X DVD Writer, Black
I have twice tried to create a recovery disc and am now left with two trashed DVDs. The error codes in the error window are:
    Error Code: 0E01B5-26-2A040803
    Error code: 02016F-3C-00000000
The first time the burning was stopped, the second time the verify failed.
Can anyone shed light on this?

    *Short version:*
Thank you to everybody who replied.
I decided to try out the USB DVD drive on another laptop to perform a HDD backup operation...and it failed as well. Grrrr. Same DVD media (I just hadn't got round to getting new media to try).
I think I shall discount the possiblility of the NB200 being at fault, and therefore shall consider this question answered on this forum.
    *Long version:*
Well, I ended up using Virtual CD to "burn" an ISO file to HDD, and then copied that to another laptop to burn to DVD (not using the USB DVD drive, but the same DVD media type). Being the curious type I decided to perform a restore using the USB DVD drive. It got part way through installation then informs me that a CRC check had failed...argggg.
So, to cut a long story even shorter, I ended up slipstreaming the Intel storage drivers into a Win XP ISO (created from a Win XP CD I had from another previous laptop) and creating a bootable USB drive. Now I have a clean install with all the NB200 driver installed. Phew.
Actually, to think a bit more about it, I could have attempted to put the Toshiba recovery ISO onto the bootable USB drive, but I've done the clean install now anyway.
For whatever reason, I had such trouble getting the NB200 BIOS to recognise the USB DVD drive in order to change the boot order (it wasn't in the option list). This was with the DVD in the tray, and without the DVD in the tray. Some investigation required on my part, I think, to determine exactly what is going on.

  • Can't create recovery disks!

Just purchased the Satellite L505D-LS5007. Read all over the place where it was a good idea to make recovery disks for the computer. Once I got it out of the bow, up and running, I located the Recovery Media Creator, pulled out some blank DVD/R's (Sony) and put one in. After a few seconds, the following message pops up:
The following issue has occurred while recording date to the media.
    The curent process was stopped.
A power calibration area error occurred.
Please check if the media is scratched or dirty.
If so, please try again with new media.
    (Error Code: 0E01B5-26-2A037303)
Every new blank DVD/R I put in does the same thing!!! Any ideas would help!!

it only seems to be when making the recovery media. i would just try another brand of dvds or take it back and exchange it for another laptop. just tell them the recovery partitions seem to be messed up and they will either exchange it or try to make it for you.

  • How can I create an iPhoto Library from photos on an external drive?

    Here's my issue:
I have a MacBook Pro running OS X Mavericks, and I am just about out of hard drive space.
I also have about 20 GB worth of photos on an external drive. The photos are not organized at all, just got dumped into a folder there during a hasty backup a couple years ago.
I'd like to use iPhoto to get these photos organized, but don't have the space to import them into the library on my laptop.
How can I create and manage an iPhoto library with these photos while keeping them on the external drive? They are on a terabyte drive, so I have a feeling I'd like to make that my main library moving forward.

Check that the drive's formatted as Mac OS Extended, drag the iPhoto library to it, launch iPhoto with the Option key held down, and choose that library.

  • Using disk utility to create a disk image then burn to an external drive

I have an iMac which does not have the ability to burn my iDVD projects to a DVD. Can I save my iDVD proj. to a disc image? Then write that image to an external DVD writer via Disk Utility?

This is from _Disk Utilty Help_. Erasing a disk is the same as formatting it. These directions are for Tiger; check this topic in Leopard to see if there is any difference in the directions.
    +_Erasing a disk or volume_+
+You use Disk Utility to erase disks and volumes.+
+Erasing a disk deletes all the volumes and files on the disk. Erasing a volume deletes all the files on that volume, but does not affect other volumes. Erasing a recordable disc, such as a CD-RW or DVD-RW disc, creates a blank disc with no formatting.+
+IMPORTANT: If you have any files you want to save, be sure to copy them to another disk before you erase the disk they are on.+
+Usually when you erase a disk or volume, Disk Utility erases only the information used to access the files on the disk, not the actual files. Because of this, the erased files can be recovered. If you want to erase a disk so that the files cannot be recovered, you can select security options to write zeros over the disk space.+
+If you want to erase an external disk, connect the disk to your computer.+
+In Disk Utility, select the disk or volume in the list on the left.+
    +Click Erase.+
+Choose a format from the Volume Format pop-up menu. Usually you will choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled).+
+Type a name for the disk or volume.+
+If you're erasing a disk and plan to use the disk with Mac OS 9, select the checkbox to install the Mac OS 9 drivers.+
+You do not need to install the Mac OS 9 drivers to use the disk with the Classic environment.+
+If you want to erase the entire contents of the disk by writing zeros, click Security Options, then select the option you want and click OK.+
    +Click Erase.+
+To erase your computer's startup disk, you must start up from another disk. You can use your Install Mac OS X disc.+
    What does "journaled" mean?

  • Can Envy K203TX recovery disks be used to recover an Envy K204TX?

Hi, The first thing i did when i got my Envy K203TX notebook, was create a set of recovery disks. Then I discovered that the notebook has several issues.HP sent me an on-site tech, and the tech said these issues were caused by several faulty hardware (display panel, motherboard, and the case has a bad battery lock). He helped me return the notebook as DOA. The problem is, HP store couldn't get me another K203TX, I paid like $150 more and upgraded to an Envy K204 TX. I now have the 204TX and this notebook has no issues at all, it's as good as it can get.My recovery disk set from the Envy K203TX is still with me. Question> Can I use these disks to recover my K204TX in case disaster strikes? Or shall I throw away these disks and create a fresh set of recovery disks for this computer?

  • Cannot create recovery disk after update to Win 8.1 on G580

    Friends
I have a Lenovo G580 that came with Win 8.0 preinstalled. I upgraded it to Win 8.1 over the Internet.
When I try to run the "Create recovery disk" I get the error that states that "We cannot create a recovery drive for this PC. Some required files are missing..."
I found out that the winre.wim file that is supposed to be in the C:\Windows\System32\Recovery folder is not there. I cannot locate it anywhere on the C or D drives either. I believe there is a copy on one or more of the recovery partitions but I do not know how to get that file from those partitons.
I am confused as to why there are seven partitions on that one drive:
    1 Recovery partition 1000 MB
2 EFI system partition 260 MB
    3 OEM partition 1000 MB
    4. Recovery partition 350 MB
    5. Recovery partition 20 GB
    6. Lenovo D: 25 GB
    7. Windows 8 C: 250 GB
Can someone help me and give me some instructions on how I can fix the system to find the winre.wim file?
    Thanks for any good input.
    Calle

  • Can not create recovery discs on satellite C875D-S7330

Can not create recovery discs on satellite C875D-S7330. Drive runs and appears to be doing it thing, then aborts saying it has error to check disc for scratch or dust on media. Error code: OEO1B5-26-2AO3OC 00 . Tried 3 new discs all same results. Tried a 4th disc trying to continue on with disc 2 of recovery discs, got another error on this one. Error code: 020150-20-00000000.
Anyone have a fix for this? Had this machine less than 24hrs.
    Thanks
    Don B.

Personally, I would get a 16gig USB thumb drive and put your recovery on it.  It eliminates having to swap disks during recovery and it's easy to store.  I've used mine several times and it's worked perfectly every time.

  • How to create recovery disk on HP envy dv6 7258nr notebook pc - window 8

I m trying to create recovery disk from recovery drive which is created by hp while purchasing the laptop, while taking back up from recovery manager, Recovery Manager says   (Recovery Partition has been removed - Recovery Media creation option is no longer available) , but as per my knowledge i did not took back up of recovery drive. So what should i do to take back up of my recovery drive to **bleep**.

Based on what you have stated, it appears that you or someone else with access to your notebook deleted the recovery partition. Without the recovery partition on the hard disk you can't make recovery media.
Your best option at this point would be to purchase a recovery disk set from HP or an HP Partner.

  • HT4848 Error creating recovery disk in Disk Assist

I've carefully followed all instruction in this post: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4848, but I am having an error when creating the recovery disk.
The recovery Disk Assist starts creating it, but stops early on. The message I get is titled "Conclusion," and it says "The recovery drive wasn't created. There was an error creating recovery disk."
Can anyone help me with this? I followed all the steps in the post above and I also created the partition on the external drive.
I really need to wipe out my computer and make it appear "as new" because I am selling it. Any help would be great!
    Thanks!

Same happened to me.  This makes absolutely no sense, but I just kept trying and trying then it finally worked.  For me, it hasn't been worth the bother.  These restore DVDs don't work like the ones I made for an Acer laptop, for example.  On my Acer, I repartitioned, reformatted my drive and was easily able to restore my computer before I sold it.  I've been going nuts trying to restore my computer after a clean install of Windows 7.  Still can't get it to work.
