Can I crop a photo inside aperture to any custom dimension?

can i crop inside aperature

You have asked two different questions and, I believe, have gotten correct answers for both.
I assume by cropping you mean to use a "portion" of an image not to simply resize an image to new dimensions. That's another problem.
The easy answer is to use an external editor such as Photoshop or Photoshop Elements (or other resizing software, of which I am not familiar).
Using the above software to create an image with exact pixel dimensions is made easier by sending an image with the correct aspect ratio from Aperture. Say you want an image 636 px x 892 px. Simply determine the aspect ratio by dividing 892 by 636. The result being about 1.4. Your aspect ration then is either 1 to 1.4 or 1.4 to 1 depending on whether you desire a landscape or portrait aspect. In the Cropping HUD, choose "Custom" Ratio Aspect, put the numbers you have calculated in the Width and Height boxes, and crop as desired. Then go to an editor capable of accurately resizing the image to specific dimensions.
If using additional software is not possible or is unavailable, you can use a trial and error method inside Aperture. This technique offers 2 possibilities. 1) It will allow you to "test" the crop within an image to determine what size crop is possible and/or which size is required to fulfill your need. 2) With patience, it will allow you to crop to specific pixel dimensions.
As before, calculate the ratio aspect your project requires. Make your crop and press Return to finalize it (for now!). (You can always "erase" the crop by bringing up the crop tool and clicking outside you original crop.) Then bring up the "Info" or "Metadata" (depending on Aperture version) HUD. (Hint: switching between "Library" and "Metadata" will update the information there.) Check "Pixel Size". Those dimensions should equate to the pixel size of your current crop.
In the trial and error method you can adjust crops, larger or smaller as needed, to match your size requirements. This is tedious and time consuming, but works.
In my experience I have found that Photoshop image size and Aperture cropped image sizes often disagree. I do not know which is more accurate, though I suspect Aperture crops are a bit inaccurate.

  • Can not sync all photos in Aperture into Iphone 5

I can not sync all photos in Aperture into Iphone 5. It always can sync some photos into 5. Then finish and prompts: "itunes can not synchronize (other)thousands of projects, and see more information in itunes".  That means most of my photos can not seen on Iphone 5, it seems just can't import to 5. Is that the problem of Iphone or the pictures in Aperture, or even just because lack of sufficient space?

  • Everytime I crop a photo in Aperture it shuts down, then restarts

When I crop a photo in Aperture, as soon as I finish with the Crop..and hit Apply I get a Warning Pop Up:
    Aperture quit unexpectedly.
Click reopen to open the application again. Click report to see more detailed information and send a report to Apple.
When I do reopen the Crop was effective just the way I had cropped the photo and all is fine until I crop again...

After upgrading iPhoto on my MacBook Pro running OSX Yosemite 10.10.3 it continually keeps asking me that it is preparing library. This has happened 5 times now and I can't access my photo's through iPhoto, any suggestions?

There is no upgrade to iPhoto with OS X 10.10.3 - here was an update to version 9.6.1 a few months ago and Photo 1.0 was added with 10.10.3 - what software and which version are you having trouble with - iPhoto or Photos?

  • Scan in mutiple photos in one file, can I crop multiple photos...

    at same time?
I don't know how to scan multiple photos as distinct file. I scan 5-6 pics it comes out at one file that I import into iPhoto. While it's very easy to crop each photo out of the file, I have to import the file as many times as there are photos
    to crop.
I hope I've been clear. Is there a smarter way to work. I don't see a way to scan
the 5-6 pics as different files in my scanner software.
    Thanks

    Joshua:
Vuescan is a 3rd party scanning application which can do batch scanning but is a little more difficult to set up. It works with most scanners.
If you have a Canon scanner you can scan in multiple photos at one time and have the scanner software crop, not as close as I'd like, each one individually and present to you in the editor of your choice or the one that comes with it.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • I can no longer drag photos in Aperture (within a project, between projects

I find that suddenly I cannot drag photos in Aperture.  In other words, I cannot MOVE a photo at all, whether within a project or between projects and albums, &c.  Not only this, but I cannot copy & paste either.  I can still export photos, though.
I noticed this first a couple of hours ago when attempting to attach a photo into an email using the Mail application.  It wouldn't budge.  I thought it might have been a problem with the Mail program but no, it appears to be in Aperture because I then tried to drag the photo directly from Aperture into the email (which I've been doing for years).
I've done a rebuild and all that, yet the problem remains.
Any suggestions as to what I might do other than export the whole library to Lightroom and start learning all over again?

    Can you confirm:
    - that this is true for many Images?  Try different Images in several Projects.  If possible, try with an Image you had been able to drag-and-drop into Mail in the past.
    - that you can't drag from a Project to an Album.
    - that the Image you can't drag-and-drop has a Preview?  ("Photos➞Update Preview")
What do you mean us to understand with the "and all that" part of "I've done a rebuild and all that, yet the problem remains"?

  • Can't see iCloud photos in aperture

Upgraded to Yosemite but now I can't see the photo's I've shared or the one my family have shared via iCloud in aperture. My photo stream is still visible though.
    Any Ideas??

    No.
It's odd because I updated an old iPad the other day and all the shared streams came up on it. All be it very slowly.

  • How can i crop a photo 600x600 pixels?

    Hello guys
I'm new at aperture and in photo editing so please bare with me a little
I shot some photos of the family for the official use online and they are requiered to be 600x600 pixels. I cant seem to get that via crop tool (to adjust the pixels). When i change the image size the photo proportion is messed up.
    Anybody can help with that?

Why can't you get that with the crop tool? As you are looking to go square you will need to change the crop tool setting to square.
Then open the crop tool brick in the Adjustment tab of the Inspector to see the actual width and height of the crop.
you can also type in the values in the windows.

  • Can I edit my photos in Aperture on an iPad?

    Hi
I've always used iPhoto or now, Aperture to edit and file my photos. I travel with a Mac Air laptop so I can download and edit my photos everyday from the camera and I then transfer them to my Mac Pro when I get home. I've resisted buying an iPad because I believe I wouldn't be able to do the same (ie edit my photos while on holiday). Am I correct?

There isn't an Aperture or iPhoto app for the iPad (it comes with a basic Photos apps which is effectively just a viewer), and the photo editing apps that do exist are fairly basic : cropping, brightness, rotation, straightening etc e.g. the free Photoshop Express app from Adobe (which also has an in-app purchase option). You can use the iPad for reviewing photos but if you tend to do extensive editing then it's probably not suitable.

  • How can I delete a photo from aperture but keep it on my computer

I recently purchased A3 from the App Store and have begun migrating photos to its program.
It's also given me a chance to go through and see which photos I would rather not have in A3 but I don't want to delete totally. So here's my question:
When I delete a photo from A3 is there a way to keep the original in it's location but just not pulled into A3's database? I tend to keep files where they are and even though I don't want it in A3, I still want to keep the photo on my external database. Yes, I could just select one photo at a time to incorperate but I just wanted to do a select all and then hand filter out in post.
Thanks and hope this made sense.

When the Master of an Image in your Aperture Library is located anywhere outside of that Library, it is called a "Referenced Master".  Aperture gives you complete control of your Images' Masters -- you can relocate them, consolidate them, reconnect them, etc.
Every Image has a Master.  The Master is a file on a drive.  When you delete the last Image in a Library that uses a Master, Aperture will ask you if you want to delete the Master file as well.  For your purposes, say "No".
You should probably experiment with a practice Library and make sure you end up with a workflow that meets your needs.  One thing Aperture can't do is mark which files in Finder are Masters.  To group your files by "Master/not-Master" in Finder, you will have to go into Aperture and move all of the Masters to another location.  The files left are not Masters.
Note that Aperture puts deleted Masters in the System trash.  They are put in a folder named after your Library -- I think -- in any case they are easy to identify.  Until you empty the system trash, they are available from there.
All of which begs the question:  why keep the Master but remove it from your Library?  You could simply create an Album (or a Project, depending on your use of Projects) called "Archive", and put all of those Images there.

  • How can I crop a photo without losing quality?

I am trying to crop photos and then have them printed to poster size.
The pictures are all 1.2 mb or larger. When I crop them the resulting picture (jpeg) is so small it lacks the resolution for enlarging to poster size.
Is there a way to crop a picture while retaining the quality so it can be enlarged?
    Thanks

iPhoto has a dpi limit that it uses for alerting users that the resolution of the photo may not be enough for quality prints. The screenshot below are those limits in iPhoto's preference file:
However, when ordering prints thru Apple that limit seems to have been raised a bit.
The following are the resolution limits and warning that Apple has put on 4 different sized images I prepared for printing to give you an ideal of what to shoot for. Remember, many have used image smaller than what iPhoto warned at and were happy with them. It's all subjective.

  • I can no longer import photos to Aperture from my camera...

...because when I plug my camera into the usb port it doesnt show up in the Import screen, even though my camera is flashing "busy", I've only had aperture a few weeks, but I havent had this problem before.
    what do I do?

I feel pretty strongly that camera-to-Aperture handling of original images puts originals at unnecessary risk. I suggest this workflow, first using the Finder (not Aperture) to copy images from CF card to computer hard drive:
    • Remove the CF card from the camera and insert it into a CF card reader. Faster readers and faster cards are preferable, and Firewire is much preferable to USB2.
    • Finder-copy images from CF to a labeled folder on the intended permanent Masters location hard drive.
    • Eject CF.
    • Burn DVD copies of the original images (optional backup step).
    • Eject DVDs (optional backup step).
    • From within Aperture, import images from the hard drive folder into Aperture selecting "Store files in their current location."
    • Review pix for completeness (e.g. a 500-pic shoot has 500 valid images showing).
    • Reformat CF in camera, and archive hard drive or DVDs of originals off site.
Note that the "eject" steps above are important in order to avoid mistakenly working on removable media.

At long last, do we now know the true identity of "Yammer"? Keith Nuttall?
Hope so. With all the experience and intelligence shown in Yammer's previous posts it would make total sense.
I for one cannot understand why people do not post under their real names. And I'm not prepared to say why. I'll let you guess.
If it is you Keith, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain by letting the community know who you really are. It would give much more weight and authority to your posts for the casual forum participants who have not had a long-standing familiarity with your previous very insightful and helpful contributions.
Just my 2 cents. Don't care tuppence whether or not anyone disagrees with me.
