Can I delete a whole disk folder from my Time Machine backup drive?

I temporarily mounted a drive (let's call it "Mumble"), forgetting to exclude it from Time Machine's list of disks to ignore. I caught this oversight after Time Machine had done just one hourly backup, and Time Machine is no longer backing it up, i.e., there's no "Mumble" folder in Time Machine's recent time-stamped folders on the backup HD.
I'd like to recover space on the backup HD by deleting the unwanted backup of "Mumble" files.
Can I simply delete the "Mumble" folder from yesterday's Time Machine "2009-01-31-155458" folder on the backup HD?

don't delete anything o the TM drive using finder. you can do this from TM interface. start TM. select your "Mumble" drive in the sidebar. click on the "gears' action button in finder's toolbar and choose 'delete all backups of..".

I need to access one folder in user library folder from my time machine backup......but the backup disk won't show show a library folder.
Pressing option-go only directs me to the current library folder in my hard drive. I have opened up the saved disk image and need to copy one folder and put it into my current library. Trying to restore using time capsule won't let me into the user library either......

The Saved Application State folder is where Lion stores all the information required for its resume feature to function as it does. As you are looking for a specific saved game folder it will not be in the Saved Application State folder. This folder was not present in Snow Leopard so wouldn't be present on your backup previous to the Lion install.
The game saves you're looking for will most likely be located in the Application Support or Preferences folder.
    Hope this helps

  • Can't install Lion This disk is used for Time Machine backups

The Lion installer, downloaded from the app store, won't let me select my internal hard disk, it says "This disk is used for Time Machine backups" which it isn't.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

I was sure that I had trashed the Backups.backupdb folder from the top level - it did require me to enter my Admin password.
Yes I had tried several times to go back to the terms of agreement screen and click agree once again, but still had the problem.
I had external HDs connected, but disconnected them and the problem persisted.
I restarted my mac and now the message has gone away and I am having no problems installing.
    Thanks everyone

  • Can I recover my Mountain Lion Server from my Time Machine Backup if there was no Recovery HD created moving from Lion?

Several years ago I upgraded my Mac Server from Snow Leopard the to Lion and then to Mountain Lion, where it is now. I believe I can fix a problem if I can rebuild my Mountain Lion Server from my Time Machine backup, however I just discoved that there is no Recovery HD on the drive.  Is there still a way to use my Time Machine Backup to rebuild the server drive?
    Any help will be appreciated.

  • Is it possible to delete a folder from my Time Machine backups?

Hi. I have Time Machine running on my office computer. It has backed up all my data since September. Problem is that I need to delete a folder from the backups that contains personal work. Is it possible to delete 1 folder from all the backups? If not, where are the instructions for erasing the Time Machine hard drive (in my case, it's Time Capsule) and starting from scratch?
    Thanks!

Yes, but never do it directly with Finder or any tool other than TM itself.
    Here's how:
Run TM and access the folder you are interested in with the Finder that pops up when you run TM
When you find the folder you wish to remove select it and then click the small gear in the TM Finder menu and have TM remove that folder and all corresponding folders.
Again, never to into the TM backup directly or you can corrupt the database and make it useless.

  • If I restore My Mac OSX Snow Leopard can I get all my files back from a time machine backup made on a portable hard drive?

I want to restore my MacBook Pro running Snow Lepoard, I made a time machine backup on a portable hard drive, can I get all the files back when resseting the OSX from the Hard Drive?

If you're using the Mac App Store version, there is initially no clean install option unless you're running the installer on a different drive or partition; your existing data will remain as is. If you're doing it from Lion's recovery partition or using the USB flash drive after erasing the internal drive, yes.

  • After installing mountain lion, can i back up all my files from external time machine hard drive if i did the back up under Lion?

Hi. Want to find out before installing new Mountain Lion if I will be able to restore all my files (music, documents....) from my external hird drive if the back up was done under Lion. Or it is better to simply copy everything, altough it would be good to keep iTunes, contacts etc as well as they are at the moment. Could someone please tell me how to do it so I can go on with it and will not have to struggle after the installation? Many thanks.

You can do this. If you did an OS X Mountain Lion clean install, it will ask you to restore a backup, so connect a Time Machine disk and restore that

  • Can I reinstall the keychain access utility from a time machine backup?

I recently installed 1password on my macbook and it is up and operating fine. I have discovered however that my keychain access utility is missing.  I was using it to look at stored passwords.  I don't know if I somehow inadverdently removed the utility or if it is the result of the pgm. installation.

Keychain Access doesn't get accidentally deleted, unless the permissions were horribly wrong on it for some reason.
First, try to find it:  Go to /Applications/Utilities, or click spotlight search and do a search, or click launch pad and look there.
If it is really gone, then yes, you can restore it from Time Machine.  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427

  • How do I properly exclude a folder from a time machine backup?

I want to exclude my music from the backup to keep the size down because I already have it backed up on a separate device. I add my Music folder to the exclude list and the size estimate in the bottom right of the time machine options sheet reflects the exclusion but when the backup starts, the size of the backup is as if the folder was not excluded. How do I make it so that is actually does exclude the folder?

  • Restoring from a Time Machine Backup on a new Hard drive

    Hi,
I have a late 2009 iMac and I had the HD replaced (it was included in the recent HD recall).
Before I had it replaced, I made a backup using my time capsule and it was on the latest version of Mountain Lion.
My question is, since I have to install the OS using the original install discs which was Snow Leopard, if I use the restore from Time Machine using Mac OSX Utilities, will my Mac restore my Mountain Lion backup (and have everything like it used to before I had the HD replaced)? Or do I have to reinstall Lion then Mountain Lion then restore from there?
It would be a pain to re download everything.
Hope someone can help me out.
    Thanks in advance

Please visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
You will find that Mountain Lion stores an invisible copy of the Recovery HD. You can boot from your Time Machine backup drive by restarting with OPTION boot:
    Boot Using OPTION key:
      1. Restart the computer.
      2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "OPTION" key.
      3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
      4. Select the disk icon for your Time Machine backup drive.
      5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.
Your computer should boot into the Recovery HD. You will be presented with a main window of options. Select the option to restore from a Time Machine backup then click on the Continue button.

  • Restore an individual iphoto event from a time machine backup!

Can you restore an individual iphoto event from a time machine backup or do you have to restore an entire library?
Whilst deleting some old photos from my library i seem to have accidentally deleted an entire event of photos. I regularly backup my iMac using TIme Machine, so was hoping that i could restore this one event. Is this possible and if so how do you do it?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Greetings Martyn,
You can restore events from TimeMachine if you like.  Read here.
Rather than clicking on individual pictures, you click on "Events", highlight the events you want, and then click restore.
    Hope that helps.

  • Restore an individual iphoto event from a time machine backup in Lion

How can I restore an individual iphoto event from a time machine backup using Lion.
    Thanks

If you know the file names of the photos you want to restore you can use  Find Any File  to search your Time Machine hard drive for that file.  When it is found you can drag it from the search window to the Desktop and import into iPhoto from there.
Due to the nature of the Time Machine backup structure each search can take a while.  The search results window will look like this:

  • Restoring from my time machine backup

My macbook pro OS crashed...the local apple store reinstalled OSx 10.6.8, told me to restore from my time machine backup drive.  How do I get the backup to go?  I've plugged the drive in, the machine finds it, but I see no place to click and start the restore...

    To restore your backup:
    1. Insert the Mac OS X disc and hold the C key while your Mac is starting.
    2. Choose your language, go to Utilities menu (on the menu bar), choose the option to restore a backup and follow the steps.
Another way is to use Migration Assistant > http://pondini.org/OSX/Migrate.html It will create a new user with the transferred files
