Can I delete my *.xmp files?

I am not a photographer, but an ordinary "idiot with a camera".  I have read discussions about the effect of deleting *.xmp files on "camera RAW" files and don't understand what I read.
I take my photos, save them as JPEG files, edit them using AutoSmartFix, and save them again.  I then delete the original copy so that I don't fill my computer up with unnecessary files.
Will deleting the thousands of *.xmp files which I have found on my computer have any effect whatsoever on my saved ".jpg photographs, please?

No, that isn't what a raw file is. When your camera takes a photo, it's not really a picture. It's three separate groups of data, one for each of the red, blue, and green color channels. That information (the raw data) needs to be processed into something that you can recognize as an image. Jpeg is a very popular format for saving the processed data. When you take a jpeg photo with your camera, the camera's own little computer has made a lot of decisions about how to make that image look best, and it discards the additional data not needed for the final file. When you shoot raw files (.cr2, .nef, etc.) you get the raw data from the camera and then you use some kind of conversion software, like adobe's raw converter, to process the image yourself, making your own decisions about what settings look best. The advantage to shooting raw is that you can keep going back and reprocessing the file different ways if you want, and often you can pull more detail from your photos than is left in the jpg your camera creates.
However, lots of photographers don't like to mess with processing raw files, and prefer to shoot jpg. That's fine, and sounds like what you want to do. However, you would not have ANY xmp files if you were shooting only jpg. Check your camera settings--it sounds like you have the camera set to shoot both a raw file and a jpeg file at the same time. If you don't want the raw files, you can save a lot of space by not creating them in the first place. What camera do you have?

  • How can I delete an old file from my library on iTunes

Occasionally I have to replace PDF manuals with ones that have been updated.  But after I sync the new file the old one remains on my Mac itunes library.  How can I delete the old file?  So far all I do is deselect the old file but it's still there.  Sooner or later there will be more old files then current ones making it hard to manage.
    Thanks in advance.

You can do this with or without the iPad connected to your Mac.
Launch iTunes on the Mac. Click on Books under the Library heading. Click on the PDFs. Then click on the PDF that you want to delete in order to select it, and go to Edit>Delete and follow the on screen prompts.
if you are using iTunes 11 and do not have the sidebar enabled, and wish to do so, go to View>Show sidebar or use the keyboard shortcut OPTION+Command+S.
If you do not want to enable the sidebar, the library items can be accessed in the button in the upper left corner of the iTunes window.

  • Trying to use a new, larger external hard drive for my Time Machine backup.  However, every time I start the backup, it gets started then fails.  And, I can't delete the few files that did save on the external.  Sort of a catch 22.  Any ideas?

Is it a USB hard drive?  USB hard drives have the problem of not giving full speed if they are hooked up on the same bus as keyboards and mice.  Double check your profiler to make sure that is not a problem.  If it is Firewire, make sure there aren't other firewire devices in use at the same time.  I recommend not only keeping a Time Machine backup, but also a clone, and if you do use Time Machine, to make sure the Time Machine drive or partition is at least twice the size of the original drive.

  • Evernote: Can I delete the imported file???

If you are a premium suscriber to Evernote, can you delete the original file (i.e., PDF, Excel, ...) that was imported into Evernote or do you need to keep it for future editing, sharing or such?
It seems Evernote copies the imported file and puts it into the Evernote folder located in the hidden Library directory (user/home/library/application support/evernote).

  • How can I delete hidden video files from the iPad?

How can I delete hidden video files from the iPad?  These files were created on my MBA and when I changed the media type to iTunesU and then copied it to my iPad via iTunes, they did not appear.  I can see them using 3rd party software, but they don't have delete functionality.
    Thanks

Interesting note:  I can see the files when I use the search function, but when I tap either file, I return to my home screen.  The video does not open.  I can transfer the file to my MBA, and it plays fine, but I cannot figure out a way to delete them.

I am talking about the icon on the docking row, that's the guy with the smily face. When you click on him it brings up a bunch of files of what I seem to have store/created on my Imac. There are hundreds of emails and some other documents. I tried to delete a few of them when I first got the MS office but it did not like that, it said it have to rebuild oulook. Why cant i delete these files? is this Apple version of Window outlook PST files?
These file extenssions are listed as
olk14_message or even or ccontact. I wish I could send a screen print but I dont see that on the key board. Maybe I should have stuck with windows..
Oh the ...olk14_message's.  Do not delete them behind Outlooks back, i.e., from the finder.  Those are the various messages that you sent, received, or deleted in Outlook.  They are indexed by Outlook so if you delete behind Outlook's back Outlook will get confused trying to access those messages.
You can delete them however using Outlook itself.  In outlook select a mailbox (Drafts, Sent Items, Deleted Items, etc.) by clicking on the mailbox on the left.  It will show you the messages in that mailbox.  You can now select all or selected items in that mailbox.  The click the Edit menu and select Delete.  You will get a dialog asking if you really want to delete the selections.  Answer "Delete" and the messages will get deleted.
The olk14_message's you are seeing are the actual messages shown the Outlook mail boxes.  When you actually delete them the way I just described the corresponding olk14_message files will also be deleted.
Note Outlook's Deleted Items mailbox is where all deleted messages go when you click the Delete tool in the Outlook toolbar.   Thus using the Delete tool from the toolbar does not permanently delete the messages.  So if you been using that for months or years you are going to have a very large Deleted Items mailbox.  And every one of those items in there is going to have a corresponding olk14_message file for that message.
So if those olk14_message files you are seeing are from the Deleted Items mailbox you can get rid of all those corresponding olk14_message files by selecting all the messages in Deleted Items and using the Edit menu's Delete.
Alternative ways to the Edit/Delete to do the permanent delete is select (all) the messages to delete and control (right) click to bring up the Outlook contextual menu and select Delete from it.
Finally if you use the Delete tool in the toolbar for messages selected in the Deleted Items mailbox you will be able to permanently delete those too.  It's an exception since using the tool on the Deleted Items means there's no place to put those messages except to "oblivion".
So, in summary, using the Delete tool in the toolbar on messages in every mailbox except the Deleted Items mailbox just moves messages to the Deleted Items mailbox.  But using the Delete tool on items in them Deleted Items mailbox permanently deletes the selected items in there.  And only permanently deleting items removes the corresponding actual ...olk14_message files.

  • I can't delete the master file, which is located on my external HD, through aperture

I import a folder to aperture which is stored on my external HD, and keep the originals on the HD.  If I try to delete a master file with the option, file-delete master image and all versions, the photo deletes from Aperture, but not my hard drive.  I have even tried to delete my trash, but no luck.  Please help, otherwise I do not want to use aperture for file management, which was one of my major reasons for buying it.

After you've deleted a file it from the project it goes into Aperture Trash. When you empty Aperture Trash (Aperture>Empty Aperture Trash) you will get a dialogue box asking "Are you sure you want to permanently delete all items in the Trash?" Under this there is a checkbox giving you the option to "Move referenced files to System Trash". If you check this box it will move the master to the system trash, and from there you can permanently delete the file.
All this is to stop you from accidentally deleting work.

  • Can't delete folder (or files in it) - VERY strange issue

ok i know there's been tons of questions about how to delete/force delete a troublesome file or folder. believe me, i searched, i've tried them all, and still, i couldn't solve it.
    here's my problem:
    a) 4 files, in a folder called "as".
    - 06Jacksons Club "Sunspot".mp3
    - 11_Novelette Conclusion" excerpt_Lisa edit.mp3
    - 16_Green Tea At Denny_s _Mary P. _Aka High Places Singer, Bassoonist, Zine-Maker, BOO - The "P" Is For Pearson_].mp3
    - 20_"Arrival In Benaras__ From Merchant-Ivory_s Film __The Guru__.mp3
    b) things i tried so far, and what happened:
    - using the terminal with sudo/rm. answers for a file: "No such file or directory".
    - using the terminal with rm/sudo to delete the whole folder:
rm: /Volumes/Untitled/as/: is a directory ... is the answer i get, and it stays there, doesnt move
    c) if i move it into trash, when i try emptying it, everything goes except for that folder and it's files inside, neither does force deleting it via the terminal make it disappear. the "crushing" noise is audible, but nothing happens. no errors or anything, it just stays there.
    d) if i click on one of the files, they disappear (!!!). if i play around in finder and come back to that folder later, they're there again. the folder itself can be normally copied, renamed, moved around on the harddisk and everything. if i duplicate the folder, the dublicate is empty, unlike the original folder.
    e) NO music player or anything else ever used those files.
    f) they are 0 bytes each.
    g) another note: the files and the folder are on an ext. harddrive. the harddrive is not faulty.
    h) i even tried deleting them from a windows computer, which keeps saying the filenames are too long or invalid, and it wont work either.
    i) the folder or the files are not locked, i have full read/write permission, i tried reinstalling several times, i also tried it from safe mode.
    j) formatting the harddisk is NOT an option.
i would be very helpful if anyone could help me with this very annoying issue. i just want to see my trashcan empty for once.
    thanks very very much!

Try booting to Safe Mode (hold down the shift key while booting, restart may take a long time but let it go), sometimes just doing that works. Restart normally.

  • HT201250 Once I use time machine to back up my Mac Air, can I delete all my files from HD and still have access to them on TM (external hard disk)?

New to Time Machine. The HD on my Mac Air is full so I got an external HD and using TM to back up everything.
Can I erase all files (pictures, docs, etc) from my Mac and still have access to those files through Time Machine?

That is a bad idea. Time Machine is strictly a backup utility. What you describe will require archiving files, which Time Machine is not designed to accomplish.
Once you erase files from your MacBook Air, they will eventually be erased from your Time Machine backup. This is by design, as Time Machine will eventually fill your backup volume and will delete old files as required. Depending on when they were first backed up and how long they existed on your MBA before you erase them, they could disappear in as little as one hour.
Use Carbon Copy Cloner or equivalent "clone" utility and configure it to archive files that do not exist on the source, or simply copy them over manually using the Finder. You can then delete them from your MBA. Bear in mind that once you do that, you no longer have a backup copy. The only copies will exist on the external HD.
