Can I delete plist.lockfiles in 10.8.2

When I installed OS X 10.7 a lot of plist.lockfiles were created. I now have OS X 10.8.2 and wonder if I can delete all of them from user/library.preferences or would it do any harm ?
I know the file size but I want do some cleaning

Yes its ok. Its the same as in Lion.
"The lockfile is just an empty file entry in the volume's directory, so if you are transferring preferences from one system to another, or from one account to another on the same system, then you can still do so by copying the .plist file and leave the .lockfile where it is on the file system.
"The lockfile can also be safely removed at any point (provided it is not in a locked state), though this would be pointless to do because the system will just recreate it the next time the respective program is launched."

I tried this but it still doesnt work. Just to clarify, i'm using a MacBook Pro MAC OS X v10.7.2 Lion.
I even tried changing the hot corners and changing it back. But all the 4 corners still doesn work.
I encounted this several times already. I tried rebooting my mac and it worked after startup.
Is there a better solution to it besides rebooting my laptop?

Can't delete hidden file from top level

Screen grab of what's happening:
I used to have it as a startup item until it wouldn't login correctly after a reboot (no login, guest login)
I then deleted it from my startup items but it still shows up every reboot. I can't delete it, I can't eject it (but I can connect to the real drive from the connect to server option)
It's an annoyance, I can't seem to get it out of my system unless I make a new account and I don't want to do that.
Does anyone know how to remove it?

Next use the Verify > Preferences and mark down all the corrupted plist files, find them and move them to your desktop and reboot, they will rebuild automatically and you'll have to set the preferences for those programs again. (trash the desktop versions if there are no further complications)
That hopefully should do the trick, I think it's just a glitch and once OnyX cleans out the caches, ds store files etc., that file should disappear as everything is rebuilt.
Also it appears your having some other issues, look at those question marks.
Backup your files to a external drive via manual drag and drop methods, hold c and boot off the installer disk that comes with the comptuer and reinstall OS X on top of the installed one and reboot, hopefully that will clear things up.
Turn off Root user, it's dangerous to be running that all the time.

I can't delete an ical calender

I have an Ical calander that seems to pop up everytime in the appointmens sections. In the Ical calenders it doesn;t show this particular calender. I'm not syncing to an external server. Cause I don't see the calender I can't delete the calender. I have deleted the content of the library/calander section and the associated plist files. But still the appointenments to this calander do show up.
Tips to solve this problem or how really delete this "not present" calander would be appreciated.

Try this (assuming you're using iPhoto 12): make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library.
Select options #1, #2 and #6.
Fix #3
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:

Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.

In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Starting your Mac in "Safe Mode" (see below) will load only Apple-provided kernel extensions. Observing its perfomance in that mode will be instructive.
The problems you describe are likely to have been caused by garbage software of which "TechTool Pro" is only one example. That system has been altered from its factory configuration through the installation of several third party system modifications, any one of which can cause poor performance. Interaction between two or more is another possibility. Running a torrent client is another way of inviting malware intrusion.
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.

Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move this folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
Reboot.
If that doesn't do it and you can afford to redo all your Rules, try these & reboot...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist.backup
Note, in 10.5 & up /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/ may or may not exist.

RSS Feeds stuck - Can't delete From Visualizer

RSS Visualizer is sluggish durring activation and test.
I have deleted plists and rss from safari. How can I delete these?

External isight camera shows in use by another application. OSX 10.4.11. Profilers se the isight in firwewire attached periperals. I've tried all of the various suggestions. Unplugging, deleting plist items starting restarting.

I've tried multiple discussion lists and suggested workarounds nothing seems to work. I have an external isight camera that worked the last time I used it. I switched cables. Plugged and unplugged camera. deleted plist files but this camera refuses to show up in any of the applications. Sound preferences doesn't recognize that the external isight camera is attached, Imovie says no camera attached even thought the system profiler see the camera in textural detail. I chat shows in use by another application. The are no other open apps.
i've read dozens of articles but it seems that this may be an apple bug. When are they going release the patch?

Can you access it it System Preferences > Accounts > Your account by Changing the Pic and chosing the Snapshot option ?
Also consider Audio apps as the iSight has a Mic in it.
IS the System Profiler identifying it as being at Firmware 1.0.3
In 10.4.x and 10.5.x the iSight Firmware Updater is in Hard Drive/System/Library/Core Services in a folder called iSight Updater (it is not there is Snow Leopard)
It may pay to try Flashing the firmware again if it is updated and see if that sorts anything. (Last resort)
In the mean time check Activity Monitor
This should list iChatAgent when you start the computer (normal)
vcencoder (lower case) should only start if a video chat is started (or you access the iChat Preview or Video Preferences in iChat.
If vcencoder is showing then use the Quit Button in Activity Monitor and Foirce Quit it.
I would also consider deleting com.apple.ichatAgent.plist at this point. It is this support app that controls access to the camera (Starts vcencoder) and may be part of the issue.
A failed chat and a "Stuck" status in a .plist may try to inform the camera it is in a chat but this would not explian why other computers Respond the same way.
The iSight Firmware may be the only option.
I have not tried this or heard of anyone who has.

How can I find .plist and .kext files?

How can I find .plist and .kext files which are corrupt and need to be deleted before restarting and reloading applications)? Where are they hidden? How do I make them visible?

I was confused as the files could neither be found by Spotlight nor by the search field in the upper right corner of the Finder windows (why??), but I have located them now. The files were:
AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext The name appeared in i a warning window now and then.
The .plist files were reported red (failed) by EtreCheck:
com.apple.CSConfigDotMacCert-***@me.com-SharedServices.Agent.plist
com.adobe.SwitchBoard.
com.apple.netauth.sysagent.plist
I have deleted all four files and restarted the computer. Now there are no items in red in EtreCheck, but none of the deleted files has been replaced after restart.
So far the computer seems to work well. What action do you consider appropriate now?

Can i delete the letterboxing plug-in from the "show package contents"?

When I move clips from one project to another, either by click and drag or edit-copy-paste, of footage shot with the same camera the same day, the clip imports as a letterboxed clip. I have unchecked the automatic letterboxing in the preferences-import, deleted plists, ran disk utility, reinstalled snow leopard, moved the clip from my lacie to the desktop and then to the other project.
I would like to solve this by deleting (move to trash) the "letterbox.bundle" from the "plug-ins" of control-clicking imovie hd in applications. That seems like it would work, but I have never messed with those. Could it cause other unintended consequences? Also,I want to reinstall my iLife 6.0.3 disc but it gives me odd prompts also. I can't isolate the imovie part. Thanks!

Thanks for telling me about the "video format options". I wondered why it would try to start a new project in HD sometimes, giving a two-pane view in the clips section instead of three. I learned to play the camera before clicking "start a new project" to clue in imovie. I will always use this option now when starting a new project. I also had never payed attention to the format display at the top of my project screen.
I opened all the affected projects I've been trying to move clips around in, and they all say "DV-NTSC", so that seems not to be the cause of my letterboxing problem.
Now, I will try reinstalling imovie 6.0.3 with Pacifist. I assume I don't need to reinstall the idvd on that disc.

Stuck todo can't delete

I created a new todo in one of my email inboxes. Now when I want to delete it, it is "greyed out" but I can not edit it or delete it. When I try to add a new one mail crashes. Tried deleting the ical plist and the library cache files but it still comes back. Any suggestions?

Hi all,
I managed to add an unfinished template webpage to my site and now I can't delete it! It's the MATT’S PHOTOGRAPHY template page. It's not visible in my iWeb app either and for the life of me I can't understand how to get rid of it.

Quit iWeb, delete the plist file - Home Folder/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iWeb.plist, restart your Mac, launch iWeb, reset your preferences and publish the whole site again.
The iWeb domain package holds all the redundant files and they are not dumped out until you do a restart. See.....

Under places there is a folder which I can't access and can't delete

In Finder, Under Places there is a folder which I can't access (click on) and therefore can't delete. It has a yellow and black wheel next to it.

This is a burn folder, you can try holding command and dragging it to the trash.

Can't delete an alias in the navigation column (error -8060)

I have a new mac mini (with 10.6.3 running) which I "initialized" using my old mac mini (10.4).
That was to get my accounts and settings and such transferred easily.
Somehow during the installation, in the Finder, in the Navigation Column, under the heading Locations an alias called Documenten (in Dutch) was placed there, which I cannot click on, it points to nothing and I can't delete it. During my efforts to remove it or reinstate the alias the finder response with error -8060.
Does anybody knows a way how to "manually" delete it from some settings file or preference file or something like that deep in the system?

Do you have a Documents folder in your Home folder? If so is it "normal?" If you quickly drag the alias out of the Finder's sidebar does it "poof" away or is that when you get the error?
Have you tried removing the /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist and/or com.apple.sidebarlist.plist files (drag to Desktop then relaunch the Finder.)
