Can I delete Receipts.pkg files? For Permissions repair, verify first?

I recently read that all *.bom (/Library/Receipts/boms/*.bom) files should be preserved so Mac os x knows what files an installer put into which location. But what about those large .pkg files (/Library/Receipts/*.pkg)? Those take up more than half a GB on my drive. Can I just dump all the *.pkg files?
On another note, when I want to repair permissions I can either "Verify" or "Repair" disk permissions. I suspect I don't have to verify permissions when the repair button can be pressed, assuming that verification is part of the repair? Or do I have to go verify and then repair?

Can I just dump all the *.pkg files?
If you do then Software Update will be confused and Permissions Repair will be damaged. So, don’t.
No you don’t have to verify before repairing Permissions.

  • Can I delete receipts .pkg files?

or will this screw everything up.
Just trying to free up some hard drive space.

    Hi Cameron!
You do not want to delete items in the Receipts folder!
More info here Disk Utility shows a "No Valid Packages" alert.
They really don't take up much room, so the gain in HD space would be minimal anyway.
If you need more space, use the tips found here Freeing Space On Your Mac OS X startup Disk, authored by Dr Smoke.
    Good Luck!

  • Can I delete big 7z files for Pre8 and Photoshop8?

I am trying to clear some space on my hard drive and found (in the "My Documents" folder for some reason ) three 7z files that altogether take up more than 6GB of space. For example, PremiereElements_8_Content_WWEFDJ.7z
These appear along with the extractors, which aren't big.
Question is, if I delete these files will it affect the programs and how?
    Thanks

It appears you downloaded the software, instead of buying a disc... is that true?
If yes, write the files to a CD and keep it safe... and write a file with your serial number(s) to the same CD so you will be able to reinstall in case of a hard disk problem
In fact, while your computer is working, you should also make a backup of your hard drive
Hardware crashes or virus infections happen, so you should buy software to make a full backup of your hard drive to an external USB hard drive... which makes restoring very easy to a new drive in the same computer, or to the same drive in case of corruption
The product I use is at http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/image-for-linux.htm
Image runs off of a bootable CD via Linux (the Zip you download includes a program to make the bootable CD) and it reads EVERYTHING on the drive, even the hidden registration information, so everything is restored when needed... and you may restore the image to a brand new drive and not have to re-install anything
Please note that I own no part of Image, and I don't get a referral fee (that is just a plain web link) but I use the program and it has saved me a LOT of trouble when I had a hard drive die... and I was able to restore everything and not have to re-install or re-activate a single program, from Windows on up

  • Trying to use a new, larger external hard drive for my Time Machine backup.  However, every time I start the backup, it gets started then fails.  And, I can't delete the few files that did save on the external.  Sort of a catch 22.  Any ideas?

Is it a USB hard drive?  USB hard drives have the problem of not giving full speed if they are hooked up on the same bus as keyboards and mice.  Double check your profiler to make sure that is not a problem.  If it is Firewire, make sure there aren't other firewire devices in use at the same time.  I recommend not only keeping a Time Machine backup, but also a clone, and if you do use Time Machine, to make sure the Time Machine drive or partition is at least twice the size of the original drive.

I am talking about the icon on the docking row, that's the guy with the smily face. When you click on him it brings up a bunch of files of what I seem to have store/created on my Imac. There are hundreds of emails and some other documents. I tried to delete a few of them when I first got the MS office but it did not like that, it said it have to rebuild oulook. Why cant i delete these files? is this Apple version of Window outlook PST files?
These file extenssions are listed as
olk14_message or even or ccontact. I wish I could send a screen print but I dont see that on the key board. Maybe I should have stuck with windows..
Oh the ...olk14_message's.  Do not delete them behind Outlooks back, i.e., from the finder.  Those are the various messages that you sent, received, or deleted in Outlook.  They are indexed by Outlook so if you delete behind Outlook's back Outlook will get confused trying to access those messages.
You can delete them however using Outlook itself.  In outlook select a mailbox (Drafts, Sent Items, Deleted Items, etc.) by clicking on the mailbox on the left.  It will show you the messages in that mailbox.  You can now select all or selected items in that mailbox.  The click the Edit menu and select Delete.  You will get a dialog asking if you really want to delete the selections.  Answer "Delete" and the messages will get deleted.
The olk14_message's you are seeing are the actual messages shown the Outlook mail boxes.  When you actually delete them the way I just described the corresponding olk14_message files will also be deleted.
Note Outlook's Deleted Items mailbox is where all deleted messages go when you click the Delete tool in the Outlook toolbar.   Thus using the Delete tool from the toolbar does not permanently delete the messages.  So if you been using that for months or years you are going to have a very large Deleted Items mailbox.  And every one of those items in there is going to have a corresponding olk14_message file for that message.
So if those olk14_message files you are seeing are from the Deleted Items mailbox you can get rid of all those corresponding olk14_message files by selecting all the messages in Deleted Items and using the Edit menu's Delete.
Alternative ways to the Edit/Delete to do the permanent delete is select (all) the messages to delete and control (right) click to bring up the Outlook contextual menu and select Delete from it.
Finally if you use the Delete tool in the toolbar for messages selected in the Deleted Items mailbox you will be able to permanently delete those too.  It's an exception since using the tool on the Deleted Items means there's no place to put those messages except to "oblivion".
So, in summary, using the Delete tool in the toolbar on messages in every mailbox except the Deleted Items mailbox just moves messages to the Deleted Items mailbox.  But using the Delete tool on items in them Deleted Items mailbox permanently deletes the selected items in there.  And only permanently deleting items removes the corresponding actual ...olk14_message files.

  • Evernote: Can I delete the imported file???

If you are a premium suscriber to Evernote, can you delete the original file (i.e., PDF, Excel, ...) that was imported into Evernote or do you need to keep it for future editing, sharing or such?
It seems Evernote copies the imported file and puts it into the Evernote folder located in the hidden Library directory (user/home/library/application support/evernote).

  • Can I delete failed save files?

My overall goal is to take my higher resolution FCPX project and export it as a web playable smaller movie. I tried export movie, but ran into the problem I'm going to ask about. Next up I'll try exporting using Compressor Settings, that'll probably achieve what I want.
So, as I went through the export movie steps, expecting to see something that would ask me about the dimensions of the movie (it never did ask), I let it go ahead and do its thing. After clicking Save I just saw the cursor spinning, so I went to bed.
This morning I found that it has filled my drive, and there were 14GBs of High Quality Media files. I had to force quit FCPX.
Now I have the original project, with a file structure of Final Cut Events/eventname/Original Media, etc, and also Final Cut Projects/New Project/Render Files/Thumbnail Media/ and High Quality Media and Peaks Data too.
Deleting All Render files for the event doesn't remove those files. Is there a built in way to delete the failed-save files, or can I safely manually delete the files? At least the 14GB of high quality ones?

I believe those folders were made during the export stage, certainly the "New Project" name is what I let it use. The Final Cut Events folders do seem to have the original media, so I'll give it a try deleting the high quality export files.
    Thanks for the encouragement!

Corrupted files on the HD. Input/output errors might require erasing and reformatting the HDs. See http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/trash.html for more info. BTW, there's no recycle bin on a Mac, only a trash can and the containers are referred to as Trash.

  • How can I delete an old file from my library on iTunes

Occasionally I have to replace PDF manuals with ones that have been updated.  But after I sync the new file the old one remains on my Mac itunes library.  How can I delete the old file?  So far all I do is deselect the old file but it's still there.  Sooner or later there will be more old files then current ones making it hard to manage.
    Thanks in advance.

You can do this with or without the iPad connected to your Mac.
Launch iTunes on the Mac. Click on Books under the Library heading. Click on the PDFs. Then click on the PDF that you want to delete in order to select it, and go to Edit>Delete and follow the on screen prompts.
if you are using iTunes 11 and do not have the sidebar enabled, and wish to do so, go to View>Show sidebar or use the keyboard shortcut OPTION+Command+S.
If you do not want to enable the sidebar, the library items can be accessed in the button in the upper left corner of the iTunes window.
