Can I delete the actual .pkg files after they've been installed?

Hi,
My hard drive is totally full and I'm going through deleting everything thats accumulated over the years. I've found the packages/.pkg files that get downloaded automatically taking up 2Gb of space and I would really like to get rid of them. I've got the receipts folder, but the actual downloaded files are all still there. Can I delete them without ruining my computer?
Thanks,
J

  • Is it OK to delete your downloaded program files after they have been installed?

I have several years worth of downloaded program as well as other files that have already been installed and, I would like to delete them to make more space available on my HD.  Is it OK to delete these files?
Thanks in advance for any help with this issue.

I used to keep the installers of most everything until - a very long time later - I finally realized that by the time I may need it again, it was outdated and I needed to download or pay for a newer version because the old one was no longer compatible with my current OS. So, I've changed it a bit and now only keep installers for which no new installers/versions are available, or if I think I may want to revert to an earlier version. The remainder now wind up in the trash immediately after the install.
Not that it matters at all, but your profile says MBP, but you said a Mac Pro (two very different machines). But, as I said, in the context of your question, it does not matter at all.

  • Can I delete the my music file on my computer

I have over 11K songs on my i tunes and almost 30k songs on my music.  It's taking up too much room on my computer.  Can I delete the my music files just have the I tunes,   or delete the my music file and then drag the music from I tunes and put it in the my music.
I sure there are a lot of doubles in the my music file.
I also have an external hard drive.
    Can you please help  me.
    Thank you so much.
    Sally

Yes... With iTunes closed move the entire iTunes folder from <User's Music> to the top of the external drive, e.g. as X:\iTunes where X:\ is the drive letter, then click the icon that starts iTunes and immediately press and hold down the shift key and keep holding until prompted to choose or create a library. Click choose then browse to and open the file X:\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl - your library should show exactly as before. Double check that the media folder under Edit > Preferences > Advanced now reads X:\iTunes\iTunes Media. (I'm assuming here that your library won't be old enough for the media folder to have been called iTunes Music as it was back on iTunes 8.) Once you've checked that use File > Library > Organize Library > Consolidate files in case the library is connected to any files stored outside of the media folder. This brings in copies of those files.
If you think there is media in <User's Music> that was not previously connected to the iTunes library you can move this into X:\iTunes\Automatically Add to iTunes otherwise you can discard files that you know to be duplicates.
As for duplicates already within the library, or created by moving the remnants of <User's Music> into Automatically Add to iTunes, Apple's official advice is here... HT2905 - How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls. (Such as lost playlist membership!)
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed)

  • How can I delete the photos or files in my iCloud storage that is no longer needed?

How can I delete the photos or files in my icloud storage that is no longer needed?

Explain how it didn't work and what you are trying to delete.  Since icloud doesn't store photos except for those in a backup (then delete the backup); photos in photo stream do not count towards your storage limit.

  • To save room on my hard drive, once (fcp1).dv files have been created, can I delete the original .dv files?

I've got a lot of what seems to be redundant media files on my hard drive, but I'm not sure how necessary all these files really are.  To save room, once (fcp1).dv files have been created, can I delete the original .dv files?

This is FCP X related.  I haven't used Final Cut Studio.  Regardless, for some reason I have many clips twice.  The only difference is in the name, not in the kind or size of the clip.  For instance, I've got a "clip-2008 09:25:11.dv" and a "clip-2008 09:25:11(fcp1).dv".
I don't know how that clip was created, but all my clips have been duplicated that way.  Now it may be that I ingested them in iMovie and then used those clips in FCP X - or perhaps when FCP X says this new version "needs to convert your clips".  But the point is that half my media space is taken up by these duplicate files, and I would like to remove one or the other of those duplicates.
    Any suggestions?  Thanks.

eBay or Craigslist would be the only choice.

  • HT201302 If i delete photos on my iphone after they have been downloaded to my mac will they be sync and delete on my computer??? Silly question??? HELP ; )

I have connected my iphone to my mac and my photos have been transfered.... The option to delete my photos on my phone has come up....If i go ahead and delete the photos on my phone will my photos on my ipad be deleted?  I guess my question is will i loose those photos in any way when i delete them from my iphone?  Thanks.

It depends on what you mean by "backed to your Mac." If you have just done a backup of the phone to the Mac via iTunes, then you should NOT delete them from your phone since the only way you would be able to access the photos would be by doing a complete restore of the backup to the phone and that would wipe out anything more current on the phone.
If you copied the photos to your Mac via a USB cord as described in Import photos and videos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your Mac or Windows PC - Apple Support then you can safely delete the photos from the phone. Note that you should be sure to have a good backup plan in place for your Mac so that if something were to happen to it you wouldn't lose the photos.
If the photos were sent to iPhoto via Photo Stream you can delete them from the phone if you are certain that the photos have been copied from the Shared - iCloud section of iPhoto into the Library - Events section of iPhoto. That can be done manually or you can open iPhoto and go to the menu named iPhoto > Preferences > iCloud > and insure that there is a checkmark in front of Automatic Import.

So I wanted to delete these files from my iPhone. But I can't. I know how to delete the file but that way is not working. Could you let me know how can I delete these files?

Yes, i did. But that was not working. Normally that way is good, in my case that is not possible.

  • I can't delete the .thumb.db file from a client computer

In my LAN I have a main computer, the server, that shares a folder. Other users of the LAN can access to the foler and copy, modify and delete files. However, many times when the user try to delete a folder get an error that says that the file thumb
can't be delete because the file explorer has opened the file. That's is not true.
The user has the needed permissions to delete the files, but for some reason he can't.
I know that one solution is to show icons instead of miniature in the file explorer, but it is not a solution in this case, because the user uses many photos and it's easier to see the miniatures instead of the icons.
How can I solve the problem and delete this file? Any easy and permanent solution? because this occurs in many folders and the user don't have a hugh knowledgement of windows.
    Thank so much.

    Hi,
We can disable the caching of thumbnails in hidden thumbs.db files via Group policy to fix this issue:
    1.Run gpedit.msc
    2.Navigate to:
       User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\File Explorer
3.Set “Turn off the caching of thumbnails in hidden thumbs.db files” to Enable.
4.You may need to log off or force group policy to update before this takes effect, I am not sure.
To force group policy to update, run gpupdate /force
Now you will need to clean the thumbs.db files that are already created. To do this we are gonna use the disk cleanup tool.
Press again Windows key + R to start run and write there cleanmgr then Enter。
This will start the Disk cleanup tool. Select the drive you want to clean , if you have more drives you gonna have to repeat this for each drive.
Disk cleanup tool will calculate for a bit what files can be deleted and then the following window will appear.
Make sure the Thumbnails is checked and press OK .  That is it. Now you can delete those folders you want to go away.

  • How can I delete photos on my iphone after they aredownloaded to my ipad

I have too many photos on my iphone camera roll. I want to delete from my iphone but keep them on my ipad.
When i try to delete, the message says they will be deleted from all my devices...help.

You can import photos from the iPhone to the computer and then sync them to the other devices, such as the iPad. It isn't safe to keep a large number of pictures in the Camera Roll. They are designed to be imported to the computer just like pictures on a digital camera. If something happens to the phone, this is the first thing individuals gripe about losing. If the pictures are on the computer, at least you can sync them back to another device if necessary.

  • Preview: double-click doesn't open files AFTER they have been modified

Since a few weeks (maybe since I upgraded to OS 10.6.6 ?) Preview doesn't open files any more by double-clicking AFTER I have modified and saved them. They open when I drag them to the dock icon of Preview.
For instance, photos downloaded from a camera open by double-clicking them. However, if I rotate or crop them and then save, Preview doesn't open them any more but shows two subsequent error messages: (1) "The application can't be found", (2) "The operation can't be completed. An unexpected error occurred (error code -43)".
I found one workaround: when you close and reopen the folder in which these files are, they open again by double-clicking.
    Quicklook works fine.
Looks like a bug in OS 10.6.6. Any other fixes?

In the Finder, select one of the image files you want to open with Preview. Choose "Get Info" from the contextual menu or the File menu. In the "Open with" section, choose Preview from the pulldown menu if it's not already selected. If it is selected, choose another application (any other), then re-select Preview. Click the "Change All" button and close the dialog.

  • Recover files after they have been emptied from trash

i made a huge mistake and deleted all of the music files from my computer... i am a profesional dj and need to recover them asap ...can anyone help?

    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.
