Can I delete the "Public" folder?

I'm wondering if I can delete the Public folder, or if I should refrain from doing so?
I've tried to figure out what the purpose of the Public folder is, but I'm not sure if I've understood correctly..
As far as I can see, it's there for other people to access the files within (which I don't find very comforting in the first place).
Since I have no use for sharing files with people this way, I figure I have no use for this folder either.
So, that's my reasoning for wanting to delete this folder.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Where the Public Folder comes in handy is if you want to share files between other users of your Mac. Normally, when you log on, you cannot access other user account's files...except for the Public Folder. If you are the only user, then even though you won't really take advantage of this feature, you really won't gain much from deleting it either.

  • HT1923 I can't delete the Apple folder in Common Files

My computer would not recognize my iPhone.  I tried the troubleshooting tips found online, uninstalling everything in order.  When verifying all files had been removed, I could not delete the Apple folder in Common Files as it says the folder or a file in it is open in another program.  When checking my programs I see iCloud remains (published by Apple).  Need that be uninstalled as well?  How important is it to delete the Apple folder which has an Internet Services folder in which are two other folders (filled with files), an application AppleOutloodDAVConfig64, and three application extensions?  I can no longer remember if my phone had remained connected to the computer throughout all of the process or not,

Does it say something is in use in there?

  • How can I delete the Photostream folder in iOS?

    So yeah hi everyone!
I guess the title says it. I'd like to delete the Photostream folder in iOS from my “Photos” App?
    I've already tried:
    to reset Photostream on icloud.com.
turn off Photostream on my iOS Device.

    This is the correct solution...
    1. Sign into iCloud account (the one linked to the inactive photostream album)
    2. Make sure photostream is turned ON
    3. Take a picutre, and wait for it to appear in the Photostream.
    4. Go into setting and turn off photostream, deleting all pictures, and getting rid of the photostream album.

  • Can I delete the NOS folder containing the adobe get plus stuff?

I downloaded Flash player 10 version 10.0.32.18 from the adobe site. Along with that program being installed another program was installed (ADOBE Get Plus?). It contains an exe file helperSvc.exe along with something about "getPlus+". I deleted this program. Will it effect the functioninga nd security of Flash Player 10 version 10.0.32.18? I notice if I download flash player 10 when I'm at a website that requires flash player, example www.dallasstars.com, I get the flash player 10 version 10.0.32.18 but with out the NOS folder and all the get plus stuff. So if I download flash player 10 version 10.0.32.18 from adobe and then delete the NOS folder/getPlus program, will all be ok?

By deleting it doesn't it leave stuff behind that causes me to get an error? ( getPlus+ Error  16236.203.235)

  • Proxying to Balancer Members - Can't see the public folder?

I'm following instructions in this tutorial:
    http://developer.apple.com/tools/deployonrailsleopard.html
I've created four Balancer Members and enabled the reverse proxy, so the requests to port 80 are being balanced to Mongrel processes running on 3000, 3001, 3002, and 3003.
But a strange thing is happening regarding my "public" folder...
I have a public folder containing some graphics, stylesheets, javascript file, etc. It is found at:
    /Library/WebServer/substruct/current/public
When I browse directly to a Mongrel process (ie: "http://localhost:3000), the public folder is found and the pages render fine.
But when I browse to port 80 (ie: "http://localhost), the public folder is not found and my pages look awful (ie: no stylesheets, graphics, etc).
When I first set the server up (following the tutorial), the pages rendered fine when I browsed to port 80. Then suddenly this problem started appearing, seemingly out of nowhere:
Pages look fine when I browser directly to ports 3000/3001/3002/3003, but they look bad when I browse to port 80 and the Mac Web Server does its "reverse proxy" because it looks like the contents of the public folder are not being found.
Anyone have ideas why this might be? It's 5:30 am. I'm pulling my hair out!

  • Can I delete the MoblieSync folder in my Library folder

I am trying to save some space on my iMac. The MobileSync folder is 85.5 GB and I know that this is my iPhone back up. If i delete it, will iTunes just start over fresh or would this be a bad idea?

    Hello Matt:
I generally agree with "I." Deleting system files can cause problems. One way of accomplishing that is to do a custom install (archive and install from where you are) and deselect the drivers that are not relevant (however, that would be time consuming). An A&I also creates a rather large +"previous system"+ folder that could be deleted after the process is successfully completed.
If you really want to try, move the folders you wish to trash (do not dump it yet!). See if your system behaves normally. If it does, i think you could then empty the trash to free space. I would NEVER make system changes without a good backup/restore process in place. In my case, I use both Time Machine and SuperDuper (for bootable clones).

On the Mac, empty the Trash.

  • Can I delete the "Printers" Folder in my Library?

I've been trying to free up some HD space on my MacBook and I came across a folder called "Printers" in the Library, which takes up about 4gigs. I saw that there were lots of folders for different brands such as EPSON, HP etc, and I was wondering if I could delete some of the brands that I don't use? I'm currently using a HP printer so does that mean I can delete all the others without damaging the system?
    Thanks

  • Can I delete the Adobe folder on my desktop with all the previous version setup files?

    Thanks,
    Bill

The Dropbox app is free, although there are in-app purchases that get you extra storage.  I believe all you need to do is re-install the Dropbox app, and then sign into your Dropbox account.

  • Something wrong with my email it keep eat up my hard drive.  how can i get into the system and delete the mail folder

how can I delete the mail folder in the hard drive.. it keep redownload the emails and eat up my hard drive

If you have your mail set up as an IMAP account, then it will download everything that is in your Inbox (on the online site/server) again and again. You can move your emails to another folder online after you've read them or you can also delete them online after you've saved the ones you want to keep.
If you have your mail set up as a POP account, emails are downloaded once and then reside on your hard drive; you can indicate in Mail Preferences > Accounts if you want the messages online deleted immediately or after one week, etc.

  • How do I delete the Ipod folder cache?? (in ilife '08)

just got an ipod and thought it would be fun to have all my pictures on it... not knowing that itunes makes a complete copy of all my pictures (25gb) in iphoto: iTunes constructs a photo database on your hard drive in order to make photo syncing fast when you add new photos in the future.
now this completely ate all my reserve hard drive space on my laptop and now I don't want pictures on my ipod...so I deleted them... but the itunes photo database still exists on the hard drive of my laptop... not giving me back the 25gb of hard drive space I really need!
someone helped me to find the following link:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300225
but when I search the folder ipod folder cache I get the same folder as iPhoto Library,
this is what I get: users/me/pictures/iphoto Library
when I click it to open my iphoto opens...
so how can I delete the Ipod folder cache with iphoto '08 7.1.1

    I found the answer....
go to the folder of your pictures, then either right click (or ctrl + left mouse) on iphoto library then click show pakket, then you will find the Ipod folder cache which then can be deleted...

  • HT2905 Can I delete albums in folder on hard drive

I am trying to clean up harddrive space on my laptop, all my albums are in a MP3 folder and Itunes folder. Can I delete the MP3 folder?

To be on the safe side use File > Library > Consolidate Files, you would then be certain that iTunes is only using the copies inside the iTunes Media folder and that any others were safe to delete.
It's always a good idea to have a backup, particularly before undertaking any major organizational activity in case something goes wrong.

  • For some reason, I cannot change my desktop background no matter how many times I delete the "active" folder.  It's as if it's locked.  Any ideas how I can fix it?

For some reason, I cannot change my desktop background no matter how many times I delete the "active" folder.  It's as if it's locked.  Any ideas how I can fix it?

Yes it sounds like you have a corrupted preference file.
The setting you make in individual programs get saved to a Preference file in your Users/Library/Preferences folder.
All you have to do is drag out the old file to the desktop, reboot and load the program and the preference file gets rebuilt without your preferences which you reset.
For your case I beleive the preference file is
    com.apple.desktop.plist

  • Once a movie is copied into iTunes, can I delete the file from the folder?

I've copied several movies into iTunes and then sync'd them onto my Apple TV.
My question is: Once I've copied a movie into iTunes, can I delete the movie from its original folder (e.g. the Movie folder) and still have the movie in my iTunes?
More specifically, does "dragging and dropping" the movie into iTunes make a new copy of the movie file so that I can delete the original file? And if I can delete the original file, should I?
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Thanks. I'll check and see when I get home tonight. My guess is that that's the setting since my disk space has decreased a lot when I started copying things into iTunes.
